Were less than two weeks away from the california primary on march 3rd and abc7 news wants to help you get ready in our latest episode of chasing california. We go one on one with Pete Buttigieg. Here is a portion of my interview with him followed by a discussion with phil matier. Thanks for doing this. Welcome to california. Great to be back. Were going to have a lot to celebrate. [ cheers and applause ] i dont want another old white guy as president. He is one of the options. Amy klobuchar is one of my options. Klobuchar and pete and bloomberg. We saw your success in iowa and new hampshire, but california is obviously a very different state. Whats your strategy to win here . Weve had a staff on the ground for some time. Were building that up and making sure that we connect with all kinds of different voters and all kinds of different communities and i believe we can earn a big night here in california. Hi, guys. Were with abc7 news in San Francisco. Do you have credentials. This is where buttigieg is having his town hall tonight. Sanders had an event year about six months. Were both michelles. So you decided on pete. I dont want the same old same old. I was a little kid when jack kennedy was running for president. And i remember how my parents were. It seems like you, sanders, and bloomberg are focused most on california. Can you compete . I dont have the personal fortune of a billionaire or the email list if youve run for president before, and weve been able to go from nothing to now being able to succeed in the first two states and believe we can do the same in california. Thats a portion of our interview with Pete Buttigieg. Im joined now by phil matier. Hi, phil. We have so much to talk about. When we talk about the race for the moderates, is this right now a race between the progressives and the moderates in the democratic race . Absolutely. Absolutely. We have Bernie Sanders as the progressive frontrunner. Hes at 30 in the polls. You have Elizabeth Warren in that same lane and other candidates in that lane or towards the more moderate. The challenge is, bernie and elizabeth have clocked in with their voters and it comes to a total of about 35 to 40 and the others are split up. 60 are saying, no, no, no im not ready to go there. But theyre spread out between four and five candidates. None of them are really getting the momentum. Exactly. And when i was out there in sacramento, so many voters weve talked to, theres a lot of voters that support sanders. And we talked to so many who say im not a sanders person, im between klobuchar, biden, bloomberg, but nobody seems to be dropping out. Its not about dropping out at this point. Nobody is going to say im going to step aside. Everybody has the best idea and the best chance in their mind. Its not just liberal or progressive versus moderate tensions. The bernie crowds and Elizabeth Warren are calling for big ideas, changes. Elizabeth warren says it all the time, we dont need moderation, we need big ideas. Other candidates are saying, im not sure thats going to be the winning combination. Youre going to scare the pants off the voters. What we need is something smaller, more reasonable. The thing with that is, it doesnt get attention. It doesnt. Health care for all immediately, everybody thinks about. Whether its realistic or not or debate about it at this last debate, i dont know how many times theyve asked the same questions about the same thing, health care for all. Its continuing to be there because its easily defined and something everybody can jump on where as moderation is harder. When we talk about buttigieg, i asked him about his strategy in california. Were seeing sanders with 100person staff in this state, bloomberg running ads, and buttigieg is one of the three candidates whos put an effort here to Campaign Across many parts of california, were seeing him all over. Youre seeing it. How is he at a disadvantage hes the mayor of south bend, indiana. The mere fact that hes in the final six are big. The other candidates are strong presence because everyone is tuned into this race. People are paying attention. Its not like any race weve seen before. Its not like a past race where youre like who is that . Everybody is watching. I want to say, again, because we would love you to watch the full piece, we asked him about the some of the concerns were hearing from the voters who are considering him but considering some of the other candidates and some of the concerns were hearing are the concerns about how hes polling with people of color and another woman, a few people have said hes too slick. Theres something about his personality for some. Theres no perfect candidate at this point. No. Theres six perfect candidates. Of course. And you can ask all six of them and theyll say the same thing. Im the perfect candidate. Exactly. And you can find full episodes of chasing california at abc7. Com. And you can find phil matiers column in the San Francisco chronicle every saturday and wednesday. Still ahead, thousands of rare orchids on display. Its your final chance to check them out.
