Antifreeze. But tonight, no actors here. Youre going hear from stacy castor herself theyre buried right next to each other. Dig them up. Guess what i found. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. You lost two husbands to poisoning shes a maneater what was stacey like as a child . Very inquisitive. Not afraid of anything. Always asking questions. Always asking, why . Yes. She was only allowed three whys in a day sometimes. I know i was very stubborn and headstrong even as a kid. So, my mom had her work cut out. And because was never an answer. Shed tell you, thats not an answer, mom. Why . Because i wanted to know why and because i said so, thats not an answer. Do you find yourself asking why even today . Oh, absolutely. Especially today. Because i dont understand how my life became what it is today. Police communications, can i help you . My name is Stacey Castor, and my husband didnt show up to work this morning. I dont know whats going on. Im just getting a little concerned because i havent talked to him since 5 00 in the morning on sunday when he locked me out of the bedroom. This whole story begins with a call to 911, august 22, 2005. Its a call involving a husband and on that phone is a frantic wife. Her name is Stacey Castor. And she tells the operator at the other end of the line that her husband has not come out of his bedroom, really, all weekend long. Stacey castor was stating that her husband, david castor, had locked himself in the bedroom over the course of the weekend. He had been drinking. He wasnt acting right. Has he ever mentioned hurting himself or harming himself or well, friday night when we were arguing, he told me to get out, take my kids and get out. I could leave. And then five minutes later, he said if i left he would make me sorry. I would be sorry if i ever left him. And she called 911 to have deputies respond to see what was going on. Detective dom spinelli was the lead investigator on this. When i arrived, i recalled stacey being outside. She was pretty visibly upset. One of the things stacey was concerned about was that david had a shotgun under his bed, and she was worried that he might have committed suicide. Deputy willoughby entered the residence and the bedroom door was locked. I bang on the door. Dont get any response. I kick the door in. Walked into the bedroom, and i observed david lying on his stomach across the bed. It was really an incredible scene. They find david castor, the husband, on the bed. No clothes on, and hes dead. Stacey castor had said on that phone that she was worried about what her husband might have done to himself. She asked me if hes okay. All i said was, no, hes not. The paramedics go in the room, they come back out and at this point, shes screaming, have him come back. Hes not dead. Hes not dead. The whole thing was very tragic, very. When police first answer that 911 call and find david castor naked, dead in his bedroom, their first question is, who was david castor . David was very conscientious, very work driven, was very into outdoors. He had snowmobiles and fourwheelers and a boat. David was support and strength and security to me. David castor was Stacey Castors second husband. Her knight in shining armor. Has his own business, a heating and air conditioning company. Stacey castor was the typical syracuse, new york, woman. Like so many of us. She has two daughters, ashley and bree who are teenagers, from a previous marriage. And he was married once before too, and has a grown son, david jr. For both david and stacey, this was their Second Chance at happiness. And their friends were really rooting for them. Stacey felt like a princess. Stacey felt this was a fairy tale. You know, she was loved. She was treated like a lady. You fell in love with him. Yes. And you decided to get married. Yes. And how did the girls feel about that . They werent happy about it. Why werent they happy . They didnt want their father replaced. At first, we really didnt like him. He said he didnt want to be our father and he didnt want any part of being a father. He already had his kids and he didnt want more. So there was tension. There was, but half the time it was brought on by him. David was difficult with the kids. He expected them to do everything that he said without question. And being my children, they questioned everything. But david and i had a very good relationship. There wasnt fighting . Theres no such thing as a perfect marriage, and we had our our share of issues that we dealt with. And obviously being a blended family, it made that much more to have to deal with. August 2005, david wanted to go on vacation with stacey alone to celebrate their anniversary. He always closed the shop the last two weeks of august and took vacation. And he wanted to go on a pretty extensioni extensive trip. And he kind of waited till the last minute to decide that. And ashley, obviously, wouldnt be able to go because she was working and couldnt take the time off of work and i didnt want to leave bree home alone for two weeks. And, yes, there, there was an argument about that. According to stacy, david got upset, took the bottle of southern comfort, went into the bedroom and locked himself in, and reportedly got drunk. Wouldnt come out. I encouraged her to come over because she was just, you know, so distraught the entire weekend. She made the assumption, she told me, that he was either sleeping it off because hed been inebriated the whole weekend, or was simply sleeping. She kept going over there to check on him. She said shed put her ear up to the door. She heard him snoring. So she knew he was in there sleeping. But he wasnt sleeping. He was actually in the process of dying that weekend. On the nightstand next to the bed was a short glass halffull of a green liquid. Another glass that had some remnants of some juice, an apricot brandy bottle. There was a cranberry juice bottle there too. And then, underneath the bed there was a bottle of antifreeze that was on its side with the top off. I remember standing in the kitchen and speaking with one of the members of the sheriffs office. Had observed a turkey baster lying in the garbage can. And i noticed that its got droplets inside it. So i pick it up, and i pull the rubber ball off it and i smell it, and i can smell alcohol in it. I know hes been drinking. I know alcohol is involved. I know that antifreeze is involved. People have committed suicide in the past by drinking antifreeze. Its not a pleasant way to go. They thought that this idea, this notion of a suicide, was really quite plausible. Its what the wife had told them, Stacey Castor. Stacey had told me that david had been depressed because he had recently lost his father and that possibly his drinking and suicide that weekend was as a result of him being depressed about his fathers death. So, at this point you have Stacey Castor who is a grieving widow seemingly trying to be strong and carry on for the sake of her two daughters. She gets on the phone, and shes like, i have to tell you something. And i was like, what . And shes like, david killed himself. And i was like, what . Why would he kill himself . Like, i didnt know, really, that he was hurting like that. This case could very well have closed and ended, and everyone would have thought that david castor killed himself. This was a suicide. But for people who knew david castor, suicide . It just didnt make sense. And take. It. On with rinvoq. Rinvoq a oncedaily pill can dramatically improve symptoms. Workingclass type people. Have a home, two cars, and a few kids. Stacey castor was raising two girls, living what appeared to be a very normal life. Until the day theres police surrounding the house, looking for evidence. On august 22, 2005, Stacey Castor found her husband dead in their bedroom. Apparently by suicide. One of the people inside that home on wetzel road that day when they discovered david castors body was detective dominick spinelli. And when they searched that house, at first Stacey Castor said this was suicide, that her husband had been depressed, they discover the antifreeze, but then they discover that turkey baster in the kitchen. And this guy from the bronx, who came up to upstate new york, became a detective at the sheriffs department, it just did not sit well with him. Things werent adding up to detective spinelli. And ive interviewed him many times and ive worked with him on other cases and this is a cop with a great instinct. He can see things that the average person doesnt see and hes got like a sixth sense. Dom spinelli would not let this thing go. Hes just one of those guys that thinks like a cop. I can tell you right now, very rarely does anybody commit suicide naked. When you find a body naked, oh, no, start running the lab tests. We started sending in the physical evidence the antifreeze bottle, the apricot brandy bottle, the glasses to see if there was any fingerprints or dna evidence on those items and as well as the turkey baster. The first thing we got results back on was the glass with the antifreeze in it. The glass actually had three fierprints on it. They were all Stacey Castors. And the fingerprints in such a way that it was as if someone held the glass from the bottom. Could it be explained . Sure. Stacey may have put the glass in the cupboard that way from the dishwasher. I dont know. But stacey may have held the glass up to his mouth. One thing that police noticed was that it seemed to be a very feminine scene. Apricot brandy is feminine drink. Certainly diet cranberry juice is a feminine drink. Poisoning is a feminine way of committing suicide. Men like to blow their brains out. Boom, its over. People questioned, why would david castor endure such an excruciating death . If he really wanted to kill himself, he had a shotgun right under his bed. One of the things that jumped out at us was the turkey baster. They send the turkey baster for testing, and lo and behold it turns out that there was antifreeze inside that turkey baster. One of the other puzzling things was davids dna was on the tip of that turkey baster. The turkey baster has no fingerprints on it . Thats odd. Could david have used it . Did he stick it down his throat because he couldnt drink the antifreeze . It tasted bad . Suicide by turkey baster is not something that ive seen in the, you know, criminal lexicon. Antifreeze is really deadly. As little as one or two shot glasses full can kill a grown man. Its a common household item that can kill silently. It has a sweet taste to it, easily disguised in a drink. Dying by ingesting antifreeze is a long and painful process. The antifreeze, as the crystals begin to be deposited in your major organs, you begin to shut down. Theres pain associated with that. Kidney failure, liver failure, heart failure. With his background in heating and air conditioning, he knew that antifreeze was a very painful death. Davids exwife janice right off the bat started calling me, telling me that she did not believe in any way, shape, or form that david would have caused selfharm. I told him just what kind of guy he was, and that theres no way he wouldve committed suicide. That is so wrong, so very wrong. Then police do a little digging, and to their surprise they find that david castor leaves everything to his wife, Stacey Castor, and her two daughters and nothing to his son, david castor jr. I found out i was no longer in my fathers will. There was a new will and that stacey got everything. That included everything that my parents earned through their whole life. And of course davids first wife says, no way. There is no way that this is the actual will, because david wouldve left something to his son. He had campers. He had motorcycles, jet skis, snowmobiles, a house, a business. And i figure that stacey just had made plans to take it all. I dont even believe my name was mentioned in it. My first feelings on that were my father really did not like me. I thought he was just pissed at me, like, wanted nothing to do with me and never wanted anything to do with me again. It turned out that stacey forged that will so that way she could get everything. That ends up netting her almost 50,000, which she started blowing through pretty quickly, renovating the house, and almost trying to erase david from their life there. And investigators had been suspicious all along. Theyre starting to get even more and more suspicious of what staceys motives are. I was getting phone calls from the detectives in the onondaga county sheriffs department, calling me up and saying, this doesnt sit right with me. We got a dispute over here. Some people are saying, yeah, its a suicide. Lets move on. And you know, theres another body of thought that this might be a homicide. So here you have the death of david castor, and everyones asking, well, what happened here . But it was more than just a hunch that was needed. I mean, they really had to prove their case to go ahead and settle it once and for all to determine whether this man really committed suicide. This mightve been called too quick. We got to take a look at it. And. And the investigators now start focusing on how did david really die . And if it wasnt a suicide, then somebody must have killed david. So it all starts unfolding, and it all starts to even raise more questions for this detective. He wants to interview Stacey Castors first husband. Has anybody interviewed that guy . No, we havent tracked him down. Well, it turns out we cant talk to him because hes dead. Michael wallace was buried in a cemetery near where he and stacey lived. And in that cemetery it was his headstone, she had a headstone that would be for her someday, and right next to them was davids headstone. It was very odd and very peculiar. I guess theyre going to share her in the afterlife. David castor laid to rest in this quiet cemetery, and right next to him, someone who would come to play a key role in this murder mystery. Stacey was very intelligent and she picks up very quickly. She always wanted to be a paralegal or a lawyer. And she was taking the courses in high school that she needed. And then she met Michael Wallace, her first husband. He swept her off her feet. Mike was the love of my life. I knew five minutes after i met him that i was going to marry him. They went together about three years before they got married. And what was that wedding like . It was at home. It was small. She was as happy as she had ever been. Mike was the life of the party. Mike was larger than life. If you needed something that mike had, he would give it to you. When michael was good, michael was very, very good. And when michael was bad, he was very, very bad. Youre talking about drugs . Yes. Alcohol . Yes. He had a problem with both for a long time in his life. They decide to have children. Ashley is their first child. I would say that ashley and i were best friends. Oh, i was in love. I knew from that minute on my whole reason for being here was to take care of her. We did everything together. Three years later they would have another baby, bree. And she would become michaels little princess. Bree was daddys little angel. Bree could do no wrong in michaels eye. Bree could walk on water. What about ashley . There was no talk of any relationship with ashley and michael, ever. All stacey ever talked about mike and bree, mike and bree. Mike was extremely close to our second daughter, very close. Do you think that that might have created problems for ashley . Did she know that her father was closer to her younger sister . Yes. Yes. I know she did. And i think, on some levels, definitely that hurt her. Could you see it as a mom . Yeah. Everybody around could tell that, could see that. Did you think that she had harbored any ill will toward her father because of that . I dont know. I cant answer that. How did you feel about your dad . I loved my dad. He was the only father that was allowed to go on girl scout camping trips with me. Half the reason i got most of my badges was because of him. What happened . Whats your last name, sir . Stacey was working as an ambulance dispatcher, and michael was a mechanic. He worked a different shift than i did. I would work mornings. He would work 3 00 to 11 00. So i was gone all day, and he would be home with the kids. So they were really barely any times where we were all together. There were things that were starting to strain that relationship. Michael had had affairs before we were married, and im sure he did after. I think after a while, he wore out his welcome with stacey. And after a few years of marriage, stacey had confidentially told friends that she was contemplating divorce. Stacey came to me right after thanksgiving time and she said, kim, i really want to leave mike. What do i do . And i gave her the name of my attorney. But with the holidays coming up, she doesnt think that its a good time. Its almost christmas time. I dont want to upset the household before the holidays. I understand. Wait till the first of the year. And then mike got sick. That december of 1999 around the holidays, Michael Wallace was ill. He had been staggering. He didnt feel well. He didnt look well. Hes spending a lot of time in bed. He was having a hard time walking, and he was having a hard time talking, and one time he sat up and he just vomited across the coffee table, and laid back down and went back to sleep like nothing ever happened. Just as people were thinking, maybe you should go to the doctor, he took a turn for the worst. I came home, and i called my mom to tell her that i was home. And he was laying on the couch, and he was making funny faces. Well, what i thought were funny faces. I got off the phone with her, and i turned the tv on. And all of a sudden, he just sticks his arm up in the air and, like, puts his arm on his side, and then his arm just fell down. Amy and by that time i had to get my sister from school. So Michael Wallace lays down on the sofa there in the family home and dies. It was scary. He was just sitting there, what i thought was fine and he wasnt okay. By the time they got him to the hospital, and i got up there, there was three physicians in the e. R. That said he had a heart attack. When his doctor told me that they believed he died of a heart attack, i believed that. There was no reason for me to question that. Even though he was 38, they do die of heart attacks at that age. It would seem like a perfectly obvious thing to autopsy a grown man whos healthy, who lays down on his couch and dies. But doctors told stacey they thought it was a heart attack. She says thats good enough for me. Stacey castor wanted no part of that. No autopsy. How did ashley react to her fathers death . She blamed herself for a long time. Said that it was her fault that her father had died. Why would she say that . I dont know. I didnt know that he was having a heart attack, or i didnt know what was going on. I was 11. Stacey castor collected a 50,000 Life Insurance policy on her first husband. She paid for the funeral expenses, and then she took the girls to disney world. Amy and after that, it was just the three of them. We all used to eat dinner together, like, and laugh and joke around. It just used to be me, her, and my sister. Like we were all of us girls and we did a lot of things together. She claimed that he had all sorts of medical issues. We went and got his medical records. The worst thing that ever happened to him was he had a hernia. And we couldnt come up with anything that showed he had Heart Disease like she claimed. We decided to take a harder look at Michael Wallaces death. One of the incredible things too is that theyre buried right next to each other in this cemetery, right outside syracuse, new york. And detective spinelli cant get this out of his mind. He wants to know, is this guy buried six feet under with those same telltale crystals from antifreeze . Detective spinelli is convinced that theres really only one way to find out thats to dig him up, to exhume the body. But this would be hugely controversial. Exhuming a body years later is very unusual. Its not like investigators go around to graveyards every day and dig bodies up. Not many judges are going to let you dig up a deceased person just because you have a whim. But we were able to convince the District Attorney in Cayuga County that this was indeed a homicide of david castor, and we believed that Michael Wallace met the same demise. I remember thinking when Michael Wallaces casket came out of the ground, i wonder if hes saying, its about time that you guys are looking at this, because i didnt just die on my own. So, they decide to exhume his body. And thats when the trouble for Stacey Castor really starts. I have the power to lower my blood sugar and a1c. Because i can still make my own insulin. And trulicity activates my body to release it like its supposed to. Trulicity is for people with type 2 diabetes. Its not insulin. I take it once a week. It starts acting in my body from the first dose. Trulicity isnt for people with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Dont take trulicity if youre allergic to it, you or your family have medullary thyroid cancer, or have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Stop trulicity and call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction, a lump or swelling in your neck, or severe stomach pain. Serious side effects may include pancreatitis. Taking trulicity with a sulfonylurea or insulin increases low blood sugar risk. Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, belly pain, and decreased appetite, which lead to dehydration and may worsen kidney problems. I have it within me to lower my a1c. Ask your doctor about trulicity. Dealing with our finances really haunted me. Ttle cranky. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. September 2007, the detectives get an order for exhumation of husband number one, Michael Wallace. Michael wallaces body would be exhumed and autopsied, and i was standing there saying, boy, i hope if he was killed, this comes out. I hope theres something there. So suddenly you have this dramatic scene playing out in the cemetery. They are digging up the body of Michael Wallace, who is buried right next to the second husband, david castor. And theyre exhuming the body because they want to know, will it reveal anything more about how he might have died . A few days later, i was walking through the criminal Investigation Division when i received a phone call from the medical examiner who said, hey, we just got done with the autopsy. I have the results for you and he said, guess what i found . Hes loaded with crystals. When you are poisoned with antifreeze, crystals form in your organs, and they dont ever go away. And that was one of the reasons why we exhumed him, was so that we cou find out if those crystals were still there. So when you do an autopsy on someone who ingested antifreeze, you can see the slides of the various organs. It looks like a gold vein in a western mine somewhere. You see these little, beautiful crystals popping up at you. Those telltale crystals. The same crystals when you look sidebyside with david castor, from the antifreeze. So that was, like, a big, yeah, we got her. Awesome. I knew at that point we had a double homicide and Stacey Castor probably killed both her husbands. And really, its that moment that this investigation breaks wide open. Thats when we said, we need to bring her in for a second interview. Detective spinelli and i drove out to speak to stacey. He explained to her that, you know, we hadnt closed out the investigation yet. I told her that we needed to close the case out one way or the other, and i needed to have some questions answered. She seemed nervous. She was pacing, and she just was surprised that we were there. She thought this was all over and done with. She made mention that it was like him coming from the grave, like his hand was reaching out from the grave. I remember even shooting a look at detective spinelli, because i thought it was just an odd thing for someone to say. Your husband has died of a suicide. Why would he be controlling you in any way . At our sheriffs headquarters building, we have four interview rooms. Spinelli set up one of the rooms, brought stacey into that room. I said, stacey, there were two glasses sitting on the nightstand. You say that you poured him some cranberry juice at one point, right . She said, yes. I said, im gonna show you a picture of those two glasses. I asked stacey, do you remember which glass it was that you poured the cranberry juice in . And she looked at it and said, well, when i poured the antifree i and then she stopped and said, i mean i mean, the cranberry juice. It was, like, she realizes what shes just said. She actually had a freudian slip. She said, when i was pouring the antifree i mean, the cranberry juice. She said it all right there. And i looked at her and said, but you said antifree and she said, you know, i dont like this. Youre trying to frame me. Youre trying to pin this on me. And im done. And she stopped the interview. And she just said, thats it. Im done. I want an attorney. As i picked up my folder to put the picture back in it, it just so happened that the top picture was a picture of the turkey baster. Stacey peered at the folder and said, what what is that . And i said, what . And she said, that picture, what is that picture of a turkey baster . Why is that there . And i said, dont worry about it. The interviews over. After police have questioned Stacey Castor, she actually went to her daughters and said, girls, the cops think i killed david. I was like, that cant be right. You couldnt have murdered him, because they issued a death certificate saying he died of suicide. And she said . She said, i know. I didnt do this. It was apparent that stacey was extremely nervous after my interview with her. We decided the next step would be to obtain a wiretap on staceys phones. And it scares the living [ bleep ] out of me, because i didnt do this. Stacey in that week, making a lot of calls. She was in distress. They think i did this. They put up cameras outside her house so they can tell her comings and goings. They have a camera at the cemetery to see if staceys ever visiting their gravesites. She hears that her first husbands body has been exhumed. She wants to go see it for herself, so she goes to the burial site, sees that its true. His bodys been exhumed. She called someone up on the phone and was quite upset that we had exhumed michaels body. I dont believe for one second that they found antifreeze in michaels body. I dont believe it. I recall stacey saying something along the lines of, they did it. They actually did it. They exhumed him. They did it. Whyd they do that . She tells me, they exhumed your fathers body, and i didnt believe it, so i went out and checked. I started crying. I got upset. Like, he was resting peacefully, and they just dug him up. Why would they dig up daddy . I thought it was inhumane and i didnt like it whatsoever. Ashley has just graduated from high school, and she is just entering college when she gets this news. I was at school, my first day of college. Im all excited. Two investigators show up and deliver her the news that her father didnt die of a heart attack. He died of antifreeze poisoning. I was like, then youre l lying. Because i knew that my dad had a heart attack. Thats how it was. He had a heart attack. I left and went and called my mom. Hello . Mommy, they came to my freaking school. They came to your school . Are you okay . Im gonna be okay, but im really freaking out right now. She is in disbelief, first of all, that her father didnt die of that heart attack. That he was murdered. That theyve come to her school and theyve revealed this to her. And you can hear it in her voice as shes talking to her mother. I dont understand. Howd they know i was even gonna be here . Oh, my god. That came to our school. And you can hear it in her mothers voice too, this disbelief that theyve come to the school, and that theyve told her daughter this. And then Stacey Castor, the mom, has this suggestion you know what . This is all too heavy. Why dont we drink . Why dont we have a drink . Its just been a rough week. Its been really horrible for us with everything going on. Lets just drink. Had she ever done that before . Not once. And she says weve had a rough week. Lets just get drunk. And you thought . I was like, cool you know . What kinda teenager wouldnt think that was awesome . Your parents just gave you permission to drink. Sweet stacey mixes this, you know, probably 12ounce plastic cup. Ashley, you know, caught up in the moment this is so cool. This is neat. I want to make my mom happy. She drinks it and becomes, you know, lethargic and eventually passes out and winds up in her bedroom. She wakes up. Shes got a little hangover, goes back to school, comes back, and mom again says, lets drink, but this time lets get really drunk. And this time, ashley says, mom, its not even noon yet. And she says, oh, you know, itll be noon by the time were drinking. But this wasnt just a second day of mother and daughter drinking. This was actually the scene that would now lead to the second phone call to 911 from Stacey Castor about an emergency playing out in her home. Another Family Member near death. Pure bedlam. Chaos. For the second time in two years, youve got Stacey Castor distraught and hysterical on a 911 call. Ashley . Oh, my god, oh my god, oh, my god. Bree wakes up in the morning. She goes into ashleys room, and she finds her on the bed, unresponsive. She wasnt talking. She looked petrified. Her eyes are wide open, but shes not seeing anything. Ashley is in distress. Ashley was laying there, even though she wasnt like responding or anything, she looked scared. Did you think that you were losing her . I did. Bree became hysterical and woke stacey up. She came flying out of her room and into ashleys room. I was crazy with panic that, you know, oh, my god, this is my baby. Whats going on . You know, is she okay . One of the hardest things ive ever seen in my life was seeing her laying there like that. I was in complete shock and panic. I called 911. How old is your daughter . 20. Is she conscious . Yes, shes making noise. Is she breathing normally . No. An entire bottle of vodka. Ashley . Oh, shes throwing up stacey relayed to the 911 dispatcher that ashley had consumed alcohol and quite a few doses of medications. Whatever has happened to ashley involves a bottle of vodka and a mixture of prescription pills. While stacey is on 911, bree sees a piece of paper in ashleys room and starts to read it. She hands it to her mother. I said, you have to read this, and she said, what do i have to read . And she took it from me and she was like, oh, my god. She left a letter. She left a letter . She left a note. Oh, my god, this is not happening. She really wanted the 911 call taker to know that there was a suicide note. It said, im sorry that i had to do this, but now everyone will know the truth and they wont blame you. Theyll blame me. You thought that that this was a suicide note. Mmhmm. Youre thinking ashley tried to kill herself. Yeah. When i arrived at the house, the ambulance was parked out front. There was a stretcher coming out of the residence. My sergeant came over to me and handed me a typed written letter. As im reading the note, im realizing that its a confession and a suicide note all in one. Mommy, remember i love you more than anything, and i did it for you and for us. Please forgive me, mommy. Please dont hate me. Remember i love you. At the end you can see her name, ashley. Heres the thing about the letter. The letter was typewritten, 750 words. Even the signature is typed. Theres no handwritten component whatsoever. In this note ashley says, mommy, police think its you but it was really me. I killed my dad. I killed my stepdad, and under the pressure of all this im now killing myself. Im so sorry that ive done all this. She repeatedly calls Stacey Castor, mommy. And that is such a term of endearment. I think everybody was wondering, is it possible that a child couldve committed two perfect crimes and gotten away with killing her father and her stepfather . So we really didnt know what we had at that point. Ashley was dying. She was raced to the hospital. They wheel ashley in. Shes catatonic. Theyre monitoring her vitals. Her heart rate is going through the roof. Her heart was beating 170, 190 times a minute and was very erratic. When her vitals plummeted, the hospital was afraid she would take a bad turn and possibly die. She had a cornucopia of drugs in her system. I was told later she was 15 minutes from death. If she had not been found and if her heart did the same thing at home that it did here, she would have expired at home. There were police all over the place and they wouldnt let me in the room with her. I got to see her briefly. What was the last thing you said to your daughter . I told her that i loved her was the last thing i got to say to her. She says the last thinghe got to say to her daughter was, i love you. Quite the sendoff, right . It didnt work out that way. Li. This is not happening. Another Family Member near death them time, her daughter. What would you do . What did you take . What did you write in that note . Thats when we knew this was mother versus daughter. Stacey castor is walking towards us and we wonder, what is she going to say this time . Shes a maneater ashley was in the hospital. She was in intensive care. They werent sure she was going to live. It was several hours for ashley to work through whatever she had ingested and start to come out of it. Its blurry, and i cant really see anybodys faces. Tunnel vision. All i could see was this big guy in this red shirt. Hes yelling at me, how many pills did you take . She starts to respond. And i flat out ask her, did you try to kill yourself . And she looks at me, and she had no clue that any of this had taken place. Im like, what are you talking about . I didnt do any of these things that youre saying that i did. I laid down to take a nap and i wake up to this guy yelling at me. I told her that there was a suicide note indicating that she had killed her father and her stepfather. She looked at me really wideeyed and flat out says, i did not try to kill myself, nor did i leave a suicide note. I didnt know what they were talking about, because i didnt do anything. You didnt write the note. I didnt write the note. I dont know what youre talking about. I was just having a drink with my mother. That date she recalled her mother had said to her that she didnt know if she was going to be around for her 21st birthday, so they should celebrate. And she remembered that the drink did not taste very good and that her mom got her a straw and told her to put the straw to the back of her throat and to just drink it. And she said she did what her mother told her. And then she was tired after she drank it, and went and laid down. And she didnt remember anything until she woke up the next day in the hospital. They showed me a copy of the suicide note that ashley had left, and as i reviewed it, one of the things that jumped out at me and was unbelievable was, i had interviewed stacey, and during my interview with her, she called antifreeze antifree. Instead of antifreeze with a z on the end. Coincidentally, in her daughter ashleys suicide note, ashley refers to killing her father with antifree. No z. Now thats quite the coincidence, isnt it . Reading that note was even more convincing to me that stacey was somehow involved and responsible for what was going on currently with her daughter ashley. She knew that we were closing in on her. What i did not anticipate, and what nobody else anticipated, was that she would attempt to kill her daughter and frame her for the two murders. I am literally sick to my stomach. I just cant believe it. At what point did you think, my mother tried to kill me . From the moment i woke up and everybody was asking me questions. I just knew. It all came together . When the detective was asking me what happened, what i did, i just knew. That was really overwhelming from the time she wakes up from being in the hospital. Like, this is 24 hours that shes being hit with all of this information. It was a disbelief that how could my mom do this to me . Why would my mother do this to me . How can this be possible . When stacey got to the hospital, she desperately wanted to see ashley. But we kept her away because at that point, we thought that she was responsible for poisoning her daughter. We kind of lied to stacey and told her that she was being attended to by the medical personnel and she was in dire straits and they werent allowing anybody in the room. Stacey got really upset and demanded to see her daughter because she was the mother. I got to see her briefly. And what was going through your mind . I was very concerned, not knowing if she was going to be okay, if she was going to recover. It was very difficult. She comes into the room, and shes standing next to my bed and shes touching my hair, and i look up and i remember seeing a Police Officer standing right next to her. She said to me something like, im sorry, i love you, and then she just left. We finally decided that we have a woman who has killed two people and tried to kill a third Walking Around in public. We cant let her act again. I gave the direction that she be placed under arrest for the murder of david castor, the attempted murder of Ashley Wallace. We made the conscious decision to arrest her right there on the property of the hospital. She was outside smoking a cigarette, and we walked up to her and told her that she was under arrest. I couldnt believe what i was hearing. I couldnt believe that this man had just said that they were arresting me. They thought you had poisoned your daughter. I had a speeding ticket when i was 18 years old. Thats the closest ive ever come to a brush with the law. So to be arrested and handcuffed, i was terrified. I just couldnt believe that that was happening. Do you understand how people could look at all this and think, theres something not right here . That it doesnt add up . Sure. I can see that. Then how do you explain it . Im not the person you have to ask that question to, because i cant explain that. Early first quarter. Jake quad mcgriff slams it in normally at news channel 9 on a friday night in september, were all about high school football. That night the lead story was this arrest. A liverpool woman tonight is charged with killing her husband and investigators say it appears this is not the first time. This has now become a Public Safety issue and that that forced our hand today to arrest her. Everybody was in shock. It was almost like reading a movie script. That not only is she suspected of killing two husbands, but trying to pin the murder of her husbands on her daughter. Her own daughter. I believe the old adage is true there is nothing more powerful than a mothers love. Except for Stacey Castor. By killing ashley and faking the suicide note she wouldve walked scottfree. Tonight, details of a story that seems to get more twisted with each turn of the investigation. They were blaming stacey for this. I kind of went hysterical. I cannot believe stacey has it in her to kill two men, especially men shes supposed to love. And then frame her own daughter. Right. Thats why i do not believe stacey did it. She would not frame ashley. In that moment, you know, i couldnt believe what i was hearing. I think most people would think, what an impossible choice that would be, for any grandmother to have to choose between her granddaughter or daughter. But she did, right there in front of me. It sounds to me as though youre convinced it was your granddaughter. I am. I am. No question . No question. Your mother asked you, did you murder your husband . Yes, she did. She asked me that question. And no, i didnt. It may be easier for people to decide that i did it, because im the mother and im 40 years old, but kids do things like that. All you have to do is turn on the news or read the paper. There are children that kill children and other people every single day. It happens. That was a remarkable moment. When i sat across from Stacey Castor and i said, well, if youre telling me that you didnt do it, that can only mean someone else did. Yes. Your daughter. Mmhmm. As she said that, you realize that if Stacey Castor is really the murderer here, shes willing to pin this all on her daughter. Stacy castor, charged with poisoning one husband to death, trying to do the same with her daughter. Castor is charged with 2nd degree murder. Everyone was talking about it. You couldnt go to the grocery store, you couldnt go to the hair salon without people coming up to me and asking me, wait a minute, theres a woman whos been arrested, accused of killing her second husband, suspected of killing her first husband, and then pinning the deaths on her daughter by trying to kill her . Everyones asking, well, what happened here . There were some who wanted police to look at, not Stacey Castor, but there was another person that they should look at. Theres really only one other viable suspect, the common link between Michael Wallace and david castor thats ashley, the daughter. And stacey and her defense team alleged that it could only have been ashley that killed david and killed her father, michael. 2007, stacy castor contacts a defense attorney, chuck keller. I grabbed my investigator, gabe ramos, and i said, lets get up there and see whats going on. Chuck was a fairly new attorney but very competent, very thorough. He goes to work and never stops defending stacey. We have photographs, forensics, toxicology reports, fingerprints, the dna. Ashley wallaces fingerprints are nowhere to be seen on any of the items tested. And whoever killed david had to have handled these items. This was a prosecutor who loves forensics evidence a dream. Because it had computer evidence. It had dna evidence. It had forensic linguistic analysis, which is you know, who wrote the note . Plus, shes a pretty pretty rotten human being. I wanted to make sure she was convicted. So, we had been given this remarkable access to both d. A. Fitzpatrick and his team and to chuck keller and the team working with him to try to defend Stacey Castor. And remember, for this defense team and this young defense attorney, what he has to do is come up with reasonable doubt. He really just needs one juror to think that its possible that ashley could have done this. We were looking for evidence of the accusations against stacey. So they begin hunting. They go to the home. I think we looked in probably every drawer, every dresser. We went in the basement. You can compare the style of writing, the way they spell certain words or misspell certain words. We found several letters and we said, you know, these were written by ashley and one of them actually discussed suicide. And we thought, holy cow, this cant be a small thing. They find a letter. A letter written to one of ashleys boyfriends after they had broken up. Shes distraught, and she says shes considering taking her own life. And they point to that letter to say, see . She was unstable. She was unhappy and she was contemplating committing suicide. After my dad died, i used to think about what would happened if i died. I almost tried to do it twice. That letter became a crucial piece of evidence because ashley had told investigators that she had never contemplated suicide. Ashley was kind of jealous of her younger sister, bree. The dad favored bree. When david castor came along, he came in trying to be a disciplinarian and ashley may have resented that. Somebody stepping back might say, okay, ashley didnt get along with her stepfather. Heres a way to get rid of him. As we looked into ashleys background with david and michael, every witness we talked to had something to contribute. They all pointed in the same direction that ashley was absolutely capable, and it was possible that she had done this. Mike and dani coleman were friends of stacey. They knew ashley her entire life. Hi. Hi. Come on in. The colemans believed that ashley was the bad guy in this situation. I think that because i can see how she can flip her temper very quickly. In my mind, in my gut, it makes more sense that she could have done it as opposed to stacey. Ashley had ample time. Ample opportunity. And i dont like to say that because i love that granddaughter as much as anybody else in the family. Ashley needs help if she did it. She should have gotten help back maybe when her father died. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and ask yourself maybe theres something im not putting together . Oh, yes. And maybe, im wrong . I could be. But do i think i am . No. If you are wrong, what will you say to ashley . I will apologize to her until the day i die. Statistics show that murdering your parent is very, very rare, but it does happen. But to be convinced that her granddaughter did this, that ashley did this, youd have to believe that ashley killed her father when she was just a little girl. It was either stacey or it was ashley. And it was gonna be up to a jury to decide which one of them actually killed these two men. Prosecutors have a mountain of physical and forensic evidence. And for the defense, if they could just get these jurors to have questions about ashley could have done it, then they can get a not guilty verdict. Im not guilty and were going to prove that. The evidence will show that i am innocent, and i will go home. Increase woman nooooo i got room. Hop in go ill hold it off mondays, right . You guys go horn honking get in, bryan. Thanks, mom. January of 2009. The dead of winter. I remember it being brutally cold. Meanwhile, you have this really surreal and almost unbelievable story of a mom who may have tried to kill her daughter to cover up killing two of her husbands. You have something that is very, very rare a mother versus her own blood daughter. Youre going to have a grandmother who believes granddaughter did it. You also had david castor, jr. , who has lost his father, and david jr. s mom, davids first wife. All rise. County court judge, the honorable joseph fahey presiding. Court is now in session. Please be seated. We had really three cases that we were presenting to a jury. We had the death of david castor. We had the attempted murder of Ashley Wallace. And we were allowed to present evidence about the death of Michael Wallace as well. You will have no choice but to stand up and shout, mrs. Castor, you are a murderer, and for that, you will pay. D. A. Bill fitzpatrick is a bulldog. Once he sinks his teeth into something, he doesnt let go. Chuck keller is trying his first murder case, and hes going to have to deal with the crossexamination of his clients daughter, whos going to sit there and say, she did this to me. Thats not an easy spot for a defense lawyer to be in. You will decide that the wrong person is sitting in that chair. So the trial begins, and the d. A. Has taken the move, the bold move, to put the daughter ashley on the stand as the first witness. Put your left hand on the bible, raise your right hand. He starts off by establishing her as somebody the jury likes, as really a tenderhearted teen girl. I want to ask you about the day your dad died. Heres this 20yearold remembering what it was like to see her father lying on the couch and essentially dying in front of her eyes. I saw him take and lift his arm up, and then he made a breath, and then he didnt move again after that. So i thought he was just sleeping. As she tells her story, he slowly leads her to the moment she takes a swallow of the drink offered to her by her mother. She came home and she was like, lets get drunk. Lets get just totally drunk. Police believe that the first round of drinking was a test run to just see how it goes, sort it out. But that the second time, stacey actually puts pills into the drink. And she handed me a cup and she had a cup, and she told me to keep stirring the cup. Okay. What happened next . I took a drink of it. And . And it tasted horrible. What did you say . And i was like, mom, this doesnt taste good. Shes like, probably theres probably too much vodka in there. And so she took it and went back sft in the kitchen. When she brought it back, the cup was full. Did you continue to drink it . Yes. Now, ashley, i want you to explain to the jury, if the cup tasted bad and you didnt enjoy it, why would you drink it . Because i trusted her. I think any daughter trusts your mother. Youre my mom. You love me. Why would you hurt me . Next, mr. Fitzpatrick moves on to the suicide note. Stacey castor clearly hoped her daughter would be dead. This, in her mind was her way out, and she was trying to use the death of her daughter and a fake suicide note to basically clear herself from the investigation. Whats the next thing you remember . Waking up in the hospital with a detective asking me what i did. What did you drink . What did you do . What did you take . What did you write in that note . But i didnt know what he was talking about because i didnt write a note and i didnt take anything. Have you seen that before in my office . Never. Have you ever read this note . No. Did you write this note . No. Youre absolutely certain. Im 100 positive that i did not write that note. Did you poison your father with antifreeze . No, i did not. And did you poison your stepfather with antifreeze in 2005 . No, i did not. Everybody in that courtroom was looking to see would there would be any kind of exchange between mother and daughter, and we really never saw Stacey Castor make eye contact with her daughter. She sat there stoically, without emotion. I cant imagine my own flesh and blood is 50 feet away from me, saying that you tried to kill me, and not having a reaction to that. All right, chuck. Cross examination. Thank you, your honor. Now its our turn. We get a chance to finally ask questions of this person. So the next thing you know, you wake up in the hospital the next day, right . Right. Chuck kellers in a tough spot. Ashleys young. Its been emotional, and yet his job is to show shes lying. So hes got to go after her to some degree, but without alienating the jury. We want to know questions about what happened with david. We want to know about with michael. Whether or not the fact that Michael Wallace considered bree to be his princess with this nickname and this way of treating her bothered her. Did it bother you at all that your sister had a nickname from your father, this princess, and you didnt . No. You didnt think that was a little bit unfair . No. The defense is presenting a motive for ashley to have done this. Angry at her father for not being the favorite child and the way she was treated growing up, angry at stepfather for disrupting the life that mom and two sisters had developed together, and then he moves on to that suicide note. Blank, did you write the note . Is it possible you wrote this note . You wrote a suicide note before, didnt you . I had wrote a note to an exboyfriend. And inside this note you discussed two prior suicide attempts, right . Yes. When she wakes up in the hospital and shes asked, did you try to kill yourself . No. Have you ever tried to kill yourself . No. Well, thats a lie. The biggest bombshell today was a letter that he says Ashley Wallace wrote to a prior boyfriend describing two prior suicide attempts. Keller in his valiant defense of Stacey Castor questioned ashley repeatedly about motive for murder. But ashley was ready for him, and it all fell flat. Hes having real trouble portraying her as someone who wanted to kill her father and then her stepfather and then herself. Four weeks of the trial. Over 50 witnesses in the case. Clues at the crime scene worthy of sherlock holmes. The turkey baster that had david castors dna on it. The suicide note, the autopsy results for david castor and Michael Wallace. Interesting testimony with one remaining question will Stacey Castor testify in her own defense . If she did testify, was she going to break . So this trial goes on for several weeks, and Stacey Castor and her attorney have a question theyre trying to answer, which is, do they put Stacey Castor on the stand . In highprofile cases, you dont see defendants taking the stand. Look at o. J. Simpson, scott peterson. It didnt happen. When youre on the stand and you are being torpedoed with one question after the next, you come across as a liar. The final decision wasnt made until the night before, literally. Would they put her on the stand . Judge, we have one more witness. Defense calls Stacey Castor. All right. Ultimately, they did. Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you god . I do. I wanted to talk about Michael Wallace first. Because Michael Wallace was her true love. Did you love michael . With all my heart. I still do. Now, stacey, did you kill michael . No, i did not. You had keller basically trying to get the jury to get to know her, to get to like her. Eventually, stacey and i get to what everybody wants us to get to, which is that weekend that ashley is, you know, taken to the hospital. I heard bree scream, mommy, theres something wrong with sissy. I got up and went into ashleys bedroom. I called her name. I tried to shake her and she didnt give any response. I immediately went to get the phone to call 911. And what were you thinking at that point . That was probably one of the most devastating moments in my life. She was so calm. She didnt break down in hysterics. In fact, i could see her slowly reeling in the jury. So chuck lays out his whole case with stacey, and then comes to the very end and has to ask the critical question. Did you kill david castor by poisoning him with antifreeze . No, i did not. Did you try to murder your daughter, and try to frame her for the murders of david castor and Michael Wallace . Absolutely no, i did not. We remember sitting across from her. She told us, i did not do it. And i think they put her on that stand to give the same kind of performance, which was complete denial. The next morning, it was bill fitzpatricks turn to crossexamine Stacey Castor. Tell the jury when it is that ashley had the opportunity to poison david castor. Um, she was home alone with him on friday afternoon. There was opportunity for her to do it. Fitzpatricks cross is aggressive. No, no, no. Answer my question and be specific. Fitzpatrick clearly made a decision here that the way to go after Stacey Castor is to talk to her as if shes a murderer. You dont remember stating that . Who tried to frame and kill her own daughter. Did ashley poison him . I did not poison him. When did ashley poison him . I cant answer that question. Then a critical moment in the trial. Fitzpatrick focuses on a wiretap of Stacey Castors phone calls. As im listening to it, you begin to hear the clicking of a keyboard. Click, click, click. Shes writing the suicide note right then while talking to her friend. When we forensically examined the computer from the house, it corresponded perfectly with the time that the phone call was being made, and ashley was not in the house at the time. You were typing the suicide note to frame your daughter, werent you . No, sir. Objection, judge. Ill overrule it. And we caught you, didnt we, mrs. Castor . No, you didnt. Their investigators through forensics were able to go back into that computer and to find not only the draft of the letter, but two practice runs. They were making the case that Stacey Castor methodically worked on that letter more than once before she finally printed it and put it on that bed next to her daughter. Through all of this, Stacey Castor is showing no emotion. And then, prosecutor fitzpatrick explodes. My god, youve lost two husbands to poisoning your daughter has just learned that her father was dug out of his grave i mean, there are some who would say he was theatrical. And there are others who would say he was outraged that he was sharing that courtroom with a diabolical killer sitting there. My god, is this your testimony . Objection on objection, judge. Im just jumping up, objection, objection. Ill overrule it. Despite him raising his voice yes or no . And making the ultimate accusations, Stacey Castor remains cool, calm, collected. The questions going to be, does that make her seem more guilty or less guilty . The case is now in the hands of the jury in the Stacey Castor murder trial. Its now up to them to determine if theyve seen enough evidence. One day goes by. Two days go by. What possibly could be in the jurys minds that why couldnt they come up with a verdict within an hour . As more times going by, the more anxious youre getting. Finally, you get that call that the jurys got a verdict. The people of the state of new york versus stacey r. Castor as to count number one, murder in the Second Degree, what is the verdict . Thats the truth. Thats tom steyer. Im tom steyer and i approve this message. [ fastpaced drumming ] for the last four days, jurors poured over the evidence in the case. They must decide whether the Central New York woman poisoned her second husband and also attempted to kill her oldest daughter and frame her for the crime. The longer it goes, the more likely its going to be a hung jury. I was thinking, how could it take this long . All the facts are there. As more time is going by, the more anxious youre getting. Finally, you get that call that the jurys got a verdict. Boom, put the phone down, go over, and the walk over is just every footstep youre thinking, what is it . What do we do if its good . What do we do if its bad . I dont even want to think about it now. Several of us, detectives, supervisors, just left the building and ran over to the courthouse. Ashley was standing in the hallway, and someone had said we had a verdict, and she just dropped to her knees on the ground. The courtroom is packed. It is standing room only. Here comes the jury. Are they looking at you . Are they not looking at you . Are they looking at stacey . What does that mean . I was just worried theyre going to get this wrong. Is there a possibility theyre going to get this wrong . All right, i have your note that the jury has reached a verdict. As to count number one, murder in the Second Degree, what is the verdict . Guilty. Guilty of murder in the Second Degree for the death of david castor. On count two, attempted murder in the Second Degree, whats the verdict . Guilty. And guilty of attempting to kill Ashley Wallace. When you heard guilty it cant be happening. Its got to be wrong. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I didnt look around. I just sat there and waited for it to be done and left the courtroom. Honestly, that was the best day of my life. Because i knew that people knew that i didnt do it. It was sad to see her leave that way, but i didnt feel bad for her. I was happy that they said that she was guilty because we all knew that shes guilty. Ashley and bree were out there. Oh, my god. You had the family of Michael Wallace. Im just glad its over. And i believe that my brother was there by their sides. David jr. Was out there. She does not deserve to see the light of day. When you think about it, mike is ruled a heart attack. David was initially ruled a suicide. She came pretty close to getting away with it. In the end i disagree with the verdict. You hope the jury, you know, agrees with you, but in the end you know sometimes the jury doesnt. When youve poured your blood, sweat and tears into it for all those years its a sense of relief, but its also like, yeah, we got her. A month later, were at sentencing. And ashleys given the opportunity to speak to the court. But we know shes really speaking to her mom. I hate my mother for ruining so many peoples lives. What gave her the right to play god with people . I never knew what hate was until now. Even though i do hate her, i still love her at the same time. That bothers me. Its so confusing. She was my best friend and she took that all away. Stacey, completely unmoved by this. But ill tell you, in that courtroom, you could have heard a pin drop. I didnt get a chance to say goodbye, and this will be the last time i get a chance. As horrible as it makes me feel, this is goodbye, mom. You said today that this is goodbye. Right. And i meant it. Never again. Never again. Because she tried to kill me, and nothing that she could say to me is going to ever change that. I was really honestly hoping that she would just apologize. She didnt have to say anything else except for those two words im sorry. I believe Stacey Castor was true evil. I dont want her free to roam the streets. I dont want the possibility of her harming anybody else in my family. Ill never forget sitting across from Stacey Castor when she was behind bars. She told me that she still thinks about her late husbands. She had tattoos of each of them on both of her shoulders. And she had told me that she had not heard from her daughters. And i asked her did she think she would ever talk with her daughters again . Do you wonder when the next time you will talk with them . Yeah. Yeah. Or if youll talk with them . Yeah. And i worry about if theyre okay and if theyre safe and what theyre doing and all the mom stuff. I think its hard for anyone really to wrap their head around the idea that a young person would face all of this. Theyre alone now. They have to live with the pain, the anguish, the legacy of what their mother has become known as. The black widow who tried take her own daughters life. So that story doesnt end. So, Stacey Castors now a convicted murderer and shes walking towards us to sit down i wrote this a long time ago. I dont know how old i was. I hope someday i will be on a real football team. Thats what they say. Can you sit here across from me again and tell me that youre not a killer . No, im not. No, im not. I will never say i did something i didnt do. I will maintain my innocence until the day that i die. I did not kill Michael Wallace. I did not kill david castor, and i did not try to kill my daughter, period. And i will never say that i did, ever. Youre still telling me that your daughter killed your two husbands . Im telling you i did not. Do you believe that police never considered your daughter fully enough as a suspect . Absolutely. Absolutely. Im devastated. I feel kind of numb inside. She loved her daughters very, very much, and i cannot fathom her hurting them or trying to kill one of them. Im not going to give up on her. Through all of this, i think about ashley who lost not only her dad, but her stepdad and then sits there with the realization that a jury has now decided that her mother tried to kill her to cover it all up. What that must be like. And Stacey Castor told me that ashley was her best friend. She was my best friend, too. She was. And then she took that all away. I would have done anything for her, but she decided that she wanted to kill me instead. Do you wonder how she could have done this . Every day of my life i wonder how she did it. I wonder how you try to kill your own child. In 2016, the castor family finally succeeded in having david castors body removed from its spot next to Michael Wallace.
