Were arrested in connection the killing of a police officer. Whats going through your mind . I cant imagine. I honestly couldnt process it. Gabe had gone from coast to rome to meet a friend he met in mill valley, finnegan elder. There with his shirt off. Around midnight, gabe tried to buy cocaine in a popular nightlife area. Police records show after the drug deal went bad, he grabbed the backpack of someone. The americans demanded money to return it. The backpack owner called police. A pair of officers responded without uniforms or service weapons. They con fronted the men they thought they were meeting the drug pusher. When they saw two, they probably thought it was two friends of the drug pusher or the drug dealer. The boys didnt know that those were Police Officers . No. Within days of the killing, a photo leaked out of the headquarters of the Paramilitary Police force. Heidis son handcuffed and blindfold blindfolded. A stared at it a long time trying to gauge what his feelings were. I could tell he was listening, alert. Thats him. Five months later, the officer who placed the blindfold on gabe and the one who took the picture were charged with abuse of office. A video leaked. Investigator asks hey boy whats your name, whats your name . Gabe seems confused and answers what changed . The officer also asks about the location of a pink or red sweatshirt. What fin wore during the killing. The most shocking aspect of all, who shot the video. Confirmed its officer andrea bare alley who gabe had fought hours before, seen with scratches on his neck after the altercation. The biggest witness in the case had access to the suspect. A fact for the defense to raise at trial. As a mom, seeing that image of your kid. Terrible. I was grateful that i didnt see other images that could have been worse. In terms of him being harmed. Uhhuh. Finn admits stabbing the officer. But what was gabes role. A judge ruled he should also face the aggravated murder and attempted extortion charges. With his tal i cant be language skills, he set up the meet. He thought it was the officer preventing him from saving his partner. Do you think that gabriel shares responsibility in terms of being in that place, putting himself in that location, doing the things that he did that led up to the events . I believe that he was bold enough to set up a meeting to go and get his money back after being cheated. I believe that he did not know that finn did not have the knife. Thats what gabe told investigators. But the judge in the preliminary investigation found the argument not credible. Given the knifes dimensions, it was not possible to take it and hide it in your pocket or otherwise hide it without the knowledge of natali who was nearby in the room with elder. It also appears gabe had his own knife in rome found on the table next to his hotel bed. Its similar to what he mentioned in a text to his girl friend in may. He sent her a link to this amazon listing. A source also gave me this snapchat from gabes account. His friends told me he sent it from italy in the days before the killing. Holding a knife, gabe wrote, unfortunately, no straps abroad. Street slang for guns. He had video on a cell phone leaked by the police. His snapchat continues. But this baby saved my full pockets today. I am flying he used the knife to keep someone in taking his money. His parents say the picture doesnt look like gabes body and we should focus on the core issue. Their belief that they did not identify themselves before the fatal fight. Outside of surrendering, if he had known they were police at all, would be to run. That would be the only thing. He would never attack a policeman. I found out more than seven months since the officer died, the suspects troubled background, the police mistakes. You can see it all now in our original as documentary, its called 32 seconds. A deadly night in rome. You can watch it on fire tv, the abc 7 news bay area Youtube Channel. Also air the entire documentary here on abc 7 sunday night at 7 00 p. M. Dan . Your work on this has been truly remarkable. Appreciate it. This documentary is powerful, i know. Like all cases like this, its enormously complex. Finn admits he stabbed the officer. In selfdefense he says. Of course. From your perspective, what is the Biggest Issue in dispute in this case . From the beginning, the prosecution and the police said that it was the americans who out of the blue basically attacked the Police Officers. That was really the narrative for weeks and months after that. Show now the family is finally getting their side of the story out saying they didnt know they were Police Officers. Didnt identify themselves. Exactly. The officer without weighed finn pinned to the ground and finn says in his interrogation that he feared for his life and he felt he had to take that action to save his own life. Didnt know it was a cop. He thought it was mafia. His young mind. The trial is starting. What can we expect . One day a week. Starts on wednesday. One day a week. Thats the way the system works. The lawyers will try to expedite it. That means a possibility of perhaps three days a week. At the very least, months and months and of course appeals depending on what happens. Dn, thank you very much. Terrific job. As dan mentioned, his documentary, approximate 2 seconds, a deadly night in rome is available on amazon fire tv, abc7news. The School Closed yesterday after a cancer causing chemical was found in the groundwater nearby. Students and teachers dont know when theyll be going back. Kris reyes joins us live. Any idea when classes will resu resume . Reporter yeah. We know that it likely will resume sometime next week. But the real problem is how hard it is to find an alternative space. This isnt a huge school. If you look at the building, you can see how hard it will be to find a space this size on short notice. Ideally, we want to keep the kids together in the same school, same location. We dont have an empty school sitting there waiting to take anybody in unfortunately. There are 350 students on the high school. They share schools with others and hold classes at church halls. Mcclie monds is a small black school. Always trying to do something to shut it down. They canceled classes after groundwater in the area tested approximates toif for tce, a cancer causing chemical. According to local and state officials, there are several sites that could be the source. This old plating plant, about 600 meters from the school is one possibility. We even found a Hazardous Waste sign at the gate. Te property has the same owner as this auto body shop next door. We called the owner, but did not get a response. People say its not just the school that needs to be tested. Im concerned about where exactly is it underground. If its covering the school, it must be under ouss as well. Kevin lynch lives next door to the contaminated site, he got a letter from state officials about toxic chemicals in the area. We have gotten periodic updates about what theyre doing. Theyve never said theres any sort of alarms. Theyve said that were safe and said that our soil is safe. But you also have suspicions. Thats just what the parents are worried about. Thursday night they voiced frustration about a possible contamination, repeatedly bringing up the deaths of two students who died of cancer. We had a couple of cases of cancer and its very much on our minds and were concerned about this. Want to make sure the school is safe. Reporter we do know that air testing is happening inside the school this weekend. We know that theres a possibility that the school year could be ex tebded to make up for the missed classes. Ironic because today they swore in 30 new graduates of the police academy, basically just hours after they showed the chief the door. Insurance companies are tightening standards often using data that predict wildfire damage. Michael finney joins us with a Rating System you probably never heard about, michael. Were talking about a wildfire score. Have you ever heard about that . Not very many people know about it. Its based in part on how much fuel, vegetation is around your home. If you live on the hillside and how quickly firefighters can respond. Recent fire storms have increased the profile of wildfire modeling companies. Firms that rate homes by their likelihood to burn. Do you know that homes have a fire score . No, i didnt know that. About the only people who know they have a score are those denied coverage at least in part because they got a high score. One of the best known scores is consumer advocate amy bach from insurance policyholders. As soon as they started using the fire line scoring model, we see basically red lines. We see houses that get a scarlet letter. Your final line score is 5. We dont want you. I think theres some Insurance Companies that have use that approach. They declined an oncamera interview, however this man spoke with us on camera. Core logic is a big player in this. Its had a risk score for about a decade. We dont recommend to our clients Insurance Companies to deny the policies. We recommend they look at other things. Like how the homes themselves are built. I didnt know that. I didnt know there was a score to begin w its almost like a credit score. That is a common comparison t one that Insurance Information institutes janet ruiz doesnt much like. Most Insurance Companies take a lot more than a score into account. They also often use more than one of these modeling companies that do the wildfire risk analysis and come up with scores. So how do you get your fire score . Not that easy. Theyre not given to consumers directly. But core logic says it has no problem with the scores being shared with consumers. You might want to ask your insurance agent, i would consider doing this before a buy a house. Smart. Thank you, michael, very much. Just this afternoon, a small fire broke out near brentwood.
