School are removing the plants and animals from the school. It may well go past this week due to the chemicals discovered in the ground water. We are exercising extreme caution here because some testing that we did on an unrelated matter that turned up what is called tce. It is a chemical used for metal processing. It was discovered last friday while tests were being conducted near football field on an unrelated matter. The concern is that it is vaporizing and creating a health hard for students and staff inside the school. According to local and state officials, there are several sites that could be the source of the tce. The most likely is an old plant, lane metal finishers. A few hundred feet away. Thats a major concern. Her daughter is a senior there. This is quite disruptive for all the students. It is just the latest scare for the community in and around the school. Over the years, testing has found high levels of lead around the school. It was found in the water from dated metal fixtures. Things in the past here. Weve had very high profile cases on the campus. Another football player. Darrell aiken whos died from leukemia in 2017. This is darrells mother. What is your reaction . Very sad. It has your mind wondering. It could be a possibility. The mortgage had to be there for the tenants to buy this property. Now the mayor of berkeley is talking about not letting that fall to luck but making it the law. It is about reporter when this Apartment Building went up for sale late last year, tenants decide not just to sell it with you to buy it. We need to do more to keep it affordable. He is here joining us to talk about black history month, continuing our series this week, and something that you are doing making history in the city. In january you announced the plan. Can you explain what it would look like . What were doing, people sometimes think about reparations in reference to 40 acres and a mule or passing out money to all black people who arent descendants of slavery. Were interested in bringing the entire black community, our allies, we have support from all of my colleagues on the board of supervisors. Well have a conversation about all the injustices down black people. Not only in this country but in San Francisco. Well look at black employment, black businesses, education, over criminalization, red lining, redevelopment agencies in terms of pushing out black people in San Francisco. Then well legislate a working group that will be designed for folks who are experts in the area. And theyre going to come up with what we prioritize in terms of reparations. Have you received any pushback on your plan . I havent received a lot of pushback. I think a lot of our communities understand the plight of black folks here in San Francisco. What we did in terms of free labor in this country for hundreds of years. Obviously in recent years, seen loads of black businesses leave the area. The population of black people in the city declining as well. So is your hope with this that maybe some of this will will be resurged . Definitely want to make sure we get some type of resurgence in the community. As we about black businesses in terms of shifts and changes. You can see reparations planned in terms of grants for black businesses so they can be successful and thrive. Weve already had preference registration for folks had a live in some of our Public Housing communities. It is making sure it can be sustained but also to make sure we bring black folks back to San Francisco and real ties true diversity of the city we love so much. Thank you so much.
