Trump because the American People know that he is running a corrupt administration. The speech was briefly interrupted by two topless protesters hustled out by security. And i hear the establishment saying oh, bernie cant win the election. Sanders did not mention any of his democratic opponents except for one, the one who might be his biggest challenger in california next month. Now mr. Bloomberg, like anybody else has a right to run for president. He does not have a right to buy the presidency. Sanders also implored californians to get out and vote and for the states five million no Party Preference voters to support him. The crowd to see sanders stretched around the building and down the street. Those who could not get inside pushed up to the barricades to see, or at least hear the senator from vermont. Im part of students for bernie. And he is the only candidate that will fight for the young people. My friends and i agree that hes probably not our candidate, but just like we would go see che guevara or castro were he to appear in richmond so close we want to avail ourselves of this and see him up close and personal. That woman showed up here, but she told us she is actually deciding between Elizabeth Warren and amy klobuchar. As for sanders, im told he is doing as many as three of these events per day. And as we speak, he is preparing for a rally that starts at 7 00 up in tacoma, washington. Of course, all of this come, dan and alma, just days before the caucuses in nevada. So laura, a question, though. Those protesters, do we know what that was all about . Well, here anyway it went rather quickly. Yesterday in carson city, several of them actually got up on to the stage with senator sanders. They were topless. They were arrested. Its our understanding that theyre animal activists, and theyre wanting senator sanders to end his support for both the dairy industry and for animal agriculture. I can tell you that two of the protesters yesterday in carson city are from oakland. All right. Laura anthony reporting live for us tonight. Thank you. Well, sanders supporters are known to be quite vocal and very active online, particularly on social media. Michael bloombergs campaign picked up on this and released a video targeting what are known as the bernie bros for their aggressive behavior. Abc7 news got a chance to speak to senator sanders wife today about the video and his supporters. She says they do not condone this behavior and want them to have positive conversations. The fact is we have 2. 5 million supporters on twitter, and some of them, maybe a very small number of them are negative and speak out in ways. And we tell them over and over again, we dont want your support if youre going to be disrespectful. We want you to be respectful and engage in ideas. Jane sanders said she has seen similar behavior from supporters of other candidates, and said she would appreciate it if they were given less attention. They were staying at airbnb in inverness and were supposed to check out saturday morning. The area is popular for hiking. Abc7 News Reporter anser hassan explains what was left behind thats added to the mystery surrounding their disappearance. Search and rescue crews spent the day searching near Point Reyes National seashore for these two, 77yearold Carol Kiparsky and 72yearold ian irwin. They have been missing since friday. It increases the urgency of our search. Sergeant Brenton Snyder with the Marin County Sheriffs Office says the couple were vacationing at this airbnb in inverness. The owner called police when the couple didnt check out on saturday. Sergeant snyder says the couple may have again out, leaving behind their cell phone, wallets and car. Considering the amount of personal effects that were left behind, its definitely a sign that they intended on coming back to the residence. Search crews stepped up efforts on monday since fog limited the search on monday. 136 search and rescue volunteers tracked the dense vegetation along the vast hills assisted by drones. You can get tired, you know. And take it easy. But otherwise should be able to get to the road at one point. He hiked these trails a lot. They were surprised to hear about the missing couple. They say the area is popular with hikers, so even if someone gets lost, hikers will usually run into people who can help. But iman says it is strange that a couple on vacation didnt take their cell phones. In fact, when i go for a hike, i dont only go with my cell phone, i go with my sensitive and my charger, you know, just in case. Sergeant snyder says the couple has stayed at this airbnb before and they know the area well. He says there is no evidence of any foul play. We still believe that there is a strong likelihood that they could be alive. And thats why we have so many ground searchers out here looking for them. In marin county, anser hassan, abc7 news. The couple rents out three rooms in their palo alto home. Tenants say the pair have gone hiking and camping in the past, but its unlike them to vanish in the way they did at point reyes. They like camping. They usually go for a couple of days or so. But usually theyve always been back on time, or at least just email if the plans are going change or something. That tenant says he last heard from them on wednesday. The couple sent an email to the renters before they left for point reyes area with instructions to bring in the paper, turn on the porch lights. That message ended with happy valentines day. A walk in a park was anything but peaceful for a south bay family when a Mountain Lion attacked a 6yearold girl. And a south bay assembly man is just tired of it. The assemblyman kansen chu will introduce legislation this month that will increase penalties. Breakins will be elevated to felonies if criminals take Electronic Devices with your personal information stored on it. Police support this tougher punishment. Criminals feel like they have Carte Blanche to simply come into our cities and take whatever they want out of our vehicles. So i think that this is a healthy discussion. Last year chu secured a 3. 7 million grant from the state to help five Bay Area Police agencies fight this epidemic of breakins. Now we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. This legislation from east bay state senator steve glaser will allow smaller cities to levee fines of up to 5,000 on shortterm rental hosts who violate local laws. This effort comes nearly four months after five people were killed during a party at a house in orinda that was frequently rented out for events. What we are doing today is honing in on those who are renting their property, typically in residential neighborhoods, that they are held to account for ensuring the tranquility of the neighborhood in which they live. Right now smalle cities can only fine homeowners a maximum of a thousand dollars. This legislation does not target the renters or rental platforms. Glaser says the cosponsor of his bill is now working on legislation that would target the rental plrm platforms them. A 6yearold south bay girl not only survived a Mountain Lion attack, but is also providing a valuable clue to eventually identify the cat. The attack happened sunday morning near cupertino. Now armed with dna taken from the girl, the hunt is under way to find that Mountain Lion. David louie is live at the park. David . Well, ama, were happy to report that the girl is okay. Her identity has not been released. The tracking dogs have been out here all day trying to pick up the scent of the Mountain Lion that uncharacteristically made an attack during the daytime. The tracking dogs have been given a rest for the evening, but will be back out in the morning. This is natural habitat for Mountain Lions, but this is the first time one has attacked a park visitor. On average, trail cameras pick up a Mountain Lion once a week overnight when theyre active. Thats why this incident is unusual. The 6yearold girl was walking sunday morning with four adults and three other children. We know we have a mother that tends to stick around here quite often. But we dont know the sex of this cat. It could be a big male moving through. It could be just another lion kind of passing through the area. Sky 7 was overhead as officers from the department of fish and wildlife took four tracking dogs to search Wildcat Canyon trail where the girl was attacked. The Mountain Lion left scratch marks and two shallow indentations from its fangs on her calf. That was enough to leave samples they can use to make sure to identify the animal that bit her. We have analysis of the clothing and bandages of the young girl, and we confirmed with our forensics people that a Mountain Lion was responsible for transferring dna to her clothing and her wounds. They had a steady stream of steady visitors turned away. The park will remain closed until its deemed safe. Will be more alert and take all the precautions of making ourselves big and trying to fight it off. That is what saved the 6yearold girl. One of the adults punched the Mountain Lion and it retreated. Six years ago, a similar attack a similar attack on a 6yearold boy happened just over the ridge on a trail near a winery. The Mountain Lion was acting strangely and was euthanized. No decision has been made what will happen to the Mountain Lion involved in this case. Relocation is not necessarily the answer as one officer told us, when a Mountain Lion feasts on livestock, even when relocated, it tends to continue that behavior. So you can get the inference about the behavior of a Mountain Lion once it has attacked a human. Were live near cupertino, david louie, abc7 news news. David, thank you. So what should you do if you see a Mountain Lion in your neighborhood or on a trail . We have a oneminute video with lifesaving advice that reminds you to stay where you are. Dont run. Lets turn our attention to the forecast. As we get back to work, were hoping for rain. Spencer christian, anything coming our way . Well, there is a little spritz or sprinkle that may materialize. First, lets take a look at just how dry it is right now. And the driest february on the record by the way was february 1864 with no measurable rainfall recorded here in the bay area. Right now if we continue our current pattern, we could tie that record. January 16th is when we had our last soaking rainstorm. And so far in these first 17 days of february 2020, we have had no rain at all. So were on the lookout for it. But it just doesnt seem to be materializing. Overnight we certainly will not have rain. Well have a few passing high clouds. Mainly clear skies, and a little bit of fog just offshore. Overnight lows mainly in the mid to low 40s. Tomorrow look for hazy sunshine with highs ranging from low 60s a the coast to mid60s around the bay shoreline to mid and upper 60s inland. Here is a look at our forecast animation starting on thursday afternoon at 5 00. Notice on friday, a little system that is going to bring some moisture into the area. There are a couple of different computer models that have a different outlook. This one shows almost nothing but a triple of rain coming to the bay area. The other model shows a little bit more which might be measurable. Right now were just going with this one. We go into the weekend. It looks like sunday morning, another system brings a chance of some showers down but not into the main part of the bay area. The accuweather sevenday forecast looks like all dry days so far with the best chance of a spritz or a sprinkle being on friday. Even then it look likes it wont amount to much if it materializes. Dry, mild weather and mainly sunny days with the exception of friday all the way through the sevenday period. Wow. This could be a recordsetting february again. O not in the best way. Changes are coming tomorrow to Ferry Service along the embarcadero in San Francisco. Richmond ferry arrivals and departures are moving to a different gate. Alameda, oakland and harbor bay passengers will have to line up at a different gate as well. These changers are because of construction on a pedestrian bridge that will limit access near the ferry building. There are no changes to vallejo service. Could soon cost you more to ride the ferry too. A proposal would bump fares up on most routes by a little mr. Than a dollar by 2025. It is a little cheaper for clipper card holders. Fares would go up 3 every year starting in 2021. For those who commute to and from vallejo, the monthly pass would be replaced with the idea of getting customers to switch to clipper cards. A plan calls for major parking changes in San Francisco. It will be presented to Decision Makers tomorrow. The 102page plan includes dramatic proposals. Some are bound to make residents angry. Here are a few. Extend hours for all meters and free parking on sundays. Eliminate disabled placard use at green zones, allow the use of cameras on buses and street sweepers to allow to ticket for double parking and on sweeping days. And allow the use of fixed cameras for illegal stopping and parking. In the bay area, every square foot counts. Yes. And now its calling for a registry of animal abusers. It would be simila to a sexual abuser registry. 7 on your sides Michael Finney takes a closer look at a unique proposal on a story youll see only on abc7 news. This is not a first. Whats interesting here is an animal abuse registry has been in place in the state of tennessee since 2016. Now a case expected to begin jury selection this year in Contra Costa County has found a new call for a similar registry right here in california. Gary reynolds, seen here in this center is accused of eight counts of felony animal abuse in Contra Costa County. Former coworker and joint chief jordan gingrich won a restraining order against him for Domestic Violence in 2018. Reynolds Attorney Says three women have accused his client of Domestic Violence and all have been dismissed. One of those women is breanna emmet, the mother of two of his children. He called all of gingrichs allegations against him untrue and unfounded. Gingrich did not show up for her hearing and the same judge ruled against all three women and ordered them to pay reynolds attorneys fees and costs. It is common for Domestic Violence victims to recant or minimize or just not show up at all. Thats accurate. But like i said, there were three different women at the same time who fileds allegations that were mirror images and all three were thrown out. The animal registry in tennessee is based in part on the theory there is a connection between animal abuse and domestic violenc larry parks is with the napa valley German Shepherd rescue group. They provided both financial and moral support to the family of gunner, a German Shepherd who died while under the care of reynolds and his company, nor cal canine. People need to be aware. The Community Needs to be aware. Abusing a dog, abusing an animal is the first steps to human violence. Bruce wagaman teaches animal law at Uc Berkeley School of law. He too sees a connection. People who abuse people or animals simply have a mindset to abuse inferior physically weaker individuals. And so it doesnt matter whether its a human or an animal. German shepherd rescue believes a registry of animal abusers in california would be a step forward. We felt it was very important for a community to either know about it and learn about it. Reporter wegman says he is indifferent about the idea. If there is somebody that could be rehabilitated that could prevent them from ever being rehabilitated. So im really not sure. And interesting note. Jordan gingrich, one of the women who accused reynolds of Domestic Violence is herself a dog trainer. She recently lost eight small claims cases accusing her of accepting money for services not completed. One of those cases she lost also accused her of leaving the dog in her care thanks, michael. With early voting under way in nevada, the democratic president ial candidates are making a big push to win over residents ahead of this closely watched caucus. Pete buttigieg riding a wave of momentum from his strong showings in iowa and new hampshire, taking a swipe at President Trump in front of a crowd of veterans in reno. Joe biden counting on a comeback in the state, stressing that the vast majority of the population from diverse backgrounds have not weighed in on the competition. Nevada has not been heard from, nor has south carolina, nor have the super tuesday states. But as the candidates make their appeal to voters, theyre also shifting their focus on to Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg is not even on the ballot in nevada, but the businessman has spent an unprecedented 381 million on ads so far. I never thought i was going to be able to compete with some of my opponents bank accounts. Bloomberg is currently polling at third place in the National Polls behind bernie boyne and joe biden. And in his latest digital ad, bloomberg targets sanders by showing aggressive and sometimes threatening tweets supposedly from sanders supporters. Sanders firing back. Its a perfect way to show the love for ko everybody who lost their lives in that Helicopter Crash. Its a great respect. From Northern California they came down to look at the murals and reflect. Just reminded me of watching him when i was little. The reason i started playing basketball so much, and still watch basketball. And i still watch videos every day of his highlights, everything. The murals near the intersection of fairfax and medical row, a father and daughter flew in from paris, france to see them. I think its very nice to remember kobe because he was a big legend here. Yeah. He is in heaven now. We got the news that he died. It was very sad in france in paris, and everybody was talking instagram, sending even it was late in the night in france. It was really shook. Since the deadly crash, artists have been memorializing the lakers superstar with their murals. One artist painted nine winged hearts and basketballs for everyone who died in the crash. Lakers fans are grieving. Its hard to speak of the lakers legend in the past tense. Learn i think most importantly that life is so precious. Its in an instant life is is well need to hold each other closer and love one another and remind ourselves that anything can happen at any time.
