the corona virus. we learn a u.s. citizen died of the virus in china. a u.s. embassy spokesperson telling abc news the 60-year-old died in wuhan. telling "the new york times" the person was a woman with underlying health conditions. it's believed this is the first death of a u.s. citizen from the outbreak. the embassy said they are not providing more information at this time out of respect for the family's privacy. so far at least 722 people died from the virus worldwide. the virus is infecting more than 34,000 people. and trapped on a cruise ship off the coast of japan more than 6 oh passengers have the virus and we're learning at least 11 are americans. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has the latest. >> reporter: this is what quarantine at sea looks like. >> everything changed in the blink. yesterday i was in the cruise ship, you know, really happy, going along, entertainment, i can do swimming. now today i'm just in jail. >> reporter: julie choy's 15-day vacation started january 20th. five days later taking a turn when a man onboard tested positive for coronavirus. the latest count is 64 people testing positive, including at least 11 americans. now the diamond princess cruise ship is anchored off the coast of japan. >> so when i try to find out who actually get sick, who are the people? is it the next ram? nobody say anything. >> even though choy is not symptom attic her every day routine begins with taking her temperature. food left at her door and she is only allowed to leave her cabin every three to four days for an hour and a half. >> and society attack. because the room i'm in right now is interior room without window. >> reporter: royal caribbean international announced it's banning all passengers with chinese, hong kong or macao passports from boarding the cruise ships. in the states the cdc confirmed that four patients who arrived at the travis air force base from wu hand are symptomic and will be held in local hospitals. >> all hands santa cruz is helping researchers worldwide examining the new strain of the coronavirus. the team has posted the biomolecular code of the virus online. and in could help examine how the virus could be manipulated or attacked as far as finding a treatment. meanwhile a bay area non-profit is donating a stockpile of 1.8 million medical masks to china. med share has the masks in storage in sand leonardo for the next disaster like fire or volcano. but for now they'll be used to protect against the virus. they're also shipping 200,000 plastic isolation gowns too. for more information on the symptoms of the virus head over to the website. abc7news.com. a preschool age child in solano county has been diagnosed with measles. the public health department says the child was vaccinated but only one dose. the child's parents were vaccinated. so far they do not know where the child may have contracted it. health officials say they need to trace the child's steps so they can determine if anyone else needs to be notified that they could be at risk. >> what we are trying to do is identify any of the events, locations, any gatherings where the child might have been in those days prior to the diagnosis. >> the child was not very active while sick but officials think the child may have spent time in parts of contra costa county. a frightening crime caught on camera here. men kicking in the front door just one kick did it at a home in pleasant hill to rob the place. but the situation quickly takes a turn when the homeowner confronts the group. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> reporter: when no one answered the door four masked men returned kicked down the door and broke into debbie brose's house. >> it's bigger than a normal door and very solid. and one kick. it took one quick. >> brose doesn't think her family was targeted. she thinks the suspects thought no one was home but they were. and her husband able to chase them out. >> i looked for a second. didn't recognize them and then i yelled, robs robbers! that's when my husband came running out. >> her husband grabbed one of the burglars but let him go when the driver threatened to run him down. >> hassan, abc 7 news. this morning, a rape suspect has been arrested after an hourslong standoff at a home in orinda around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. police say this man david martin justice sped away from officers. we they got to his home to interview him about a sexual assault in walnut creek. police say she barricaded himself with a shotgun to his head. after negotiations eventually he surrendered peacefully around 6:00 last night. he faces two charges of rape. police in richmond looking for a person who sit a 6-year-old with the suv that drove off. and happening at 5:00 p.m. on kalinga aech. the child is in critical condition at last check. surveillance video shows the suspect was driving this 1994 to 2000 green ford explore. there is a picture on the screen. it should have damage to the frocht of the vehicle. the suv was last seen on 23rd street. happening today, bay area students will be able to get a chance to brouz for summer jobs thanks to san francisco marp london breed and the board of supervisors. the summer resource fair gives students a chance to stay active and engaged during summer so if you look for something for the kids to do this is your opportunity. more than 140 employers are expected to connect families to a variety of programs in science, art, technology, music, sports and the outdoors and so much more. today's fair runs from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 at the county fair building on ninth avenue. we're learning that pg&e will continue to shut off power during dangerous fire conditions to prevent starting wildfires. the utility was criticized over last year's public safety power shut office because they went beyond areas that were actually at risk of burning. now the new plan includes making outages targeted to avoid widespread blackouts. pg&e says future outages should be smaller in scope and shorter in duration. strong winds are expected for parts of the bay area this weekend. a major concern is downed trees and power lines like iowa. talked about the metadata care for all plan. how expensive the plan would be. and then that in turn set off a stagewide debate about health care with a number of candidates getting involved. after pete buttigieg, the other candidate performing well in iowa. a number of candidates hitting him for his lack of experience. senator amy klobuchar wentz after him a number of times. senator warren too and bernie sanders signed to on the blossoming rivalry attacking buttigieg for taking in donations from a number of billionaires. looking ahead now, the new hampshire primary just threes away. we know we have had delays in the iowa caucus results. that prevented either buttigieg or bernie sanders from having their big moment in the spotlight saying they were the vikters on the night of the iowa caucus. on tuesday once the votes are counted it's a secret ballot primary. very likely we see the first candidate from the 2020 race get to walk on stage and claim victory. trevor alt, and the recent reddit post is racking up compassion for this homeless woman. >> my post has helped me from being completely alienated like a lot of people out here. >> robin powers has been homeless five years. using reddit to share promising news posting, i got a call from housing today. the county office called to begin the process of putting a roof over her head. >> i was married with a 2 bedroom apartment worked in accounting. >> now suffering from a connective tissue disorder and divorced lives living under the freeway to keep winter weather from destroying all she owns. but she isn't the only one out there. we reached out to supportive housing to learn about the process. no one was available for comment immediately. but the office shared this graphic fap detailing the county system. eventually all homeless people complete a standard assessment tool like a survey. identifying the need and identify the right housing. powers says this is helping to build a better bay area. >> everiabling i know one there, know someone there, you know. it's happening for people i know. it's not just a few here and there. >> powers says her push started two years ago. now that process is advisory for 7:00 tonight but gust with winds on the coast later today. compliments the dry cold front working through the bay area. you can pick up on some cloud cover on the peninsula. there is patchy fog. dense in spots. and up to the north very minimal in terms of precip, looking at the dry pattern continuing into the weekend into next week, possibly into next weekend as well. visibility, quarter a mile in rear view mirror. petaluma, santa rosa, half mile in nap hay and look at sand carlos. dense in spots appear appear. s it's cold temperatures into the upper 30s though near 50 at the coast. and the fog will continue to pull back but through 7:00, 8:00 it's still with us. but by 10:00 it's out of here abwe have sunny conditions. it's 50 in half moon bay. 41 in concord. livermore is at 41 as well. you can see the upper 30s here from the north bay. boy, what a mild day yesterday. upper 60s to near 70 in the south bay. with some of the warmth retained and upper elevation wind we
