The city is shutting down the station on easton court because they say it doesnt get enough calls for service. Tonight there is still a fire crew inside, ready to respond until 8 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Neighbors in the area are asking whats next. Neighbors near fire station 30 in union city are sounding the alarm on safety. Wednesdays 8 00 a. M. Closure is leading to a list of concerns and questions. My question would be why in this economy when everybody and everything is doing well. And the other concern i have is about response time. So we asked the citys mayor. The purpose of the closure first and foremost is because it was underutilized. The mayor says on average the station received 1. 7 calls in a 24hour period. She says underuse was costing the city more than 3. 2 million a year. Union city is currently facing a budget deficit. Its a puzzle to us, the firefighters, especially with the Public Safety tax that they are already collecting from citizens who voted to pay the money to maintain the firehouses that they have. Reporter . But the city says it was a data driven decision, one Mike Augustine says will ultimately put the public in danger. It could add an extra six to eight minutes response time. Thats a long time to wait in a bad situation. Data shows 85 of calls to station 30 were for medical response. She adds the city is considering whether to put ambulances and other Emergency Services a the stay, i hope they put it out to the public before they make a decision. From whoever i talk to, theyre not in favor of closing the stations. The nine firefighters working here will still be with the Alameda County Fire Department, but theyll have to reach out to other stations for placement. In union city, amanda del castillo, abc7 news. Thank you. New developments i evicted m just this morning. Moms for housing held a cookout to keep fighting for Affordable Housing after deputi from a home they took over in november. Two of the women were arrested and released hours later. They say it has given them new momentum. It was never about taking over the house. The statement and the movement was way bigger than that. And thats the within were standing in front of moms house today, because it was never about being on the inside. A judge issued an eviction order. The moms say deputies used strongarm tactics to get inside the house. They used a battering ram and a robot. Deputies say the doors were barricaded from the inside. Sonoma county has been looking for a place to relocate a homeless camp along the joe rodota, part of the effort to building a better bay area. The board of supervisors voted to move the encampment to the los guilicos park. The location is remote and is not a fix to the and money beca can go out there. People are trying to get a job. They got to do all these things. They cant be all the way out there. The countys goal is to have the trail cleared by the end of the month. A facility to house the homeless is expected to have 60 portable units. A potential tax on empty San Francisco storefronts has expanded to include 12 more districts. The move today by the board of supervisors brings the list of districts to more than 30. The measure will be put to a vote in march. It applies only to designated districts and the property would have to be vacant for more than six months before being hit with a tax. Nonviolent offenders are eligible, but must go through a program that may include everything from Parenting Classes to drug treatment. Abc7 News Reporter kate larsen got a rare glimpse inside the program and the families its helping. On any given night, about 30 San Francisco unified students sleep inside this school gym. Most of the kids come from single parent families who have nowhere else to go. Juan is 16 years old and says he likes galileo high school. He fled el salvador with his mother and siblings last summer. They ended up homeless in San Francisco and have been staying at the Buena Vista Horace Mann School for a week. I would be happy in a house my mom rents. They were threatening to kill me or my kids. I had to leave because its not safe. They killed someone in front of my house. Anna is juans mother. She is seeki ining asylum for h family. Thanks to the shelter, theyre not on the streets and they have support. Seven nights a week, employees from dolores Street Community services set up for the socalled stayover program at the Mission District school. The families are given food, access to showers and lockers for their belongings. She is sleeping in the gym. She has hope for Better Future for the kids. Reporter Jacqueline Portillo is the manager of the shelter who originally was opened just for buena vista horace mann students in need. But it was underutilized so last year they expanded the program and occupancy jumped 60 . Here were making together to make this kid be successful in the school.
