What brought down the boeing jet. Wicked weather. Back here at home, snow and ice causing accidents across the east coast and now the major new storm about to blast the country. Charged with murder, the estranged husband of the missing mother of five behind bars. How investigators think he carried out his attack. Race against time. Crews on the front lines trying to contain more than 100 fires tearing through australia before temperatures rise again. Ginger is right there as team heroes save these koalas. Who is jeopardys greatest of all time . Ken jennings barely ahead after day one of the epic primetime showdown. How jeopardy james is planning to fight back tonight. Good morning, america. Thank you for joining us. We want to get right to the major breaking news out of the middle east. Breaking all throughout the night. Iran retaliated for the u. S. Strike against their Top Commander launching more than a dozen missiles at u. S. Military bases in iraq. No u. S. Casualty reported and overnight President Trump tweeted all is well. But irans Supreme Leader is calling this a slap in the face of the u. S. The big question right now will this spark new retaliation or start to calm the crisis down . As all this was unfolding a uk ukrainian passenger plane taking off from tehrans airport went down in flames. Thats a look at the wreckage, all 176 people on board were killed. We do not know yet the cause of that crash. Our team is covering every angle from washington to iran and iraq and we begin with our senior Foreign Correspondent ian pannell in erbil. Good morning, ian. Reporter yeah, good morning, george. Its been a long tense night here in iraq. We heard a couple of the shells come in and explode here in erbil in Northern Iraq. Thankfully as you say, nobody was hurt in any of these multiple Iranian Missile strikes. There is a real sense of foreboding about what comes next. Overnight iran taking revenge launching a barrage of missiles targeting two u. S. Military bases and Coalition Troops in iraq retaliation for the u. S. Drone strike that killed irans Top Commander, qassem soleimani. Iranianstate tv releasing this video reportedly showing missiles targeting one of the bases and this morning, no reports of u. S. Coalition or iraqi casualties. Sources tell abc news u. S. Troops were in bunkers at the time of the attack. A sign perhaps that there was enough of a warning to alert them of possible danger. The first strike was at the Al Asad Air Base in western iraq about 5 45 eastern time, almost the same time as a Second Attack in Northern Iraq and this morning 30 miles from erbil the capital of kurdish iraq, local Security Forces removing shrapnel from what they say was an intercepted missile that landed there. Iranianstate media saying its Supreme Leader was in the military control room coordinating the attacks on the u. S. Bases. Iraqi military saying in a statement that more than a dozen missiles in all were launched. While i have to tell you interestingly weve just heard from the Iraqi Prime Ministers Office that they did, indeed, receive notification from the iranians, a verbal message around midnight local time, there would be a strike. He didnt say where or when but that was a full five hours and 45 minutes before those missiles came in and there will be real questions about whether they now notified the americans. George . Yeah, lots of warning there. Ian, thanks very much. Hours after those firing of the missiles irans foreign minister declared it had concluded its attacks and is not seeking, quote, escalation or war. Our Senior Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz spoke with him hours before the strike. Shes still there on the ground in tehran with more. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, robin. This morning iranian officials are proclaiming the strikes a success and while they say they do not want war, they say the military action was not enough. In a live tv address this morning, irans Supreme Leader calling for u. S. Troops to get out of the mideast saying their corrupt presence must end calling irans attack a slap in the face to the u. S. The now familiar chants of death to america then follow. [ crowd chanting ] the Iranian Revolutionary guard naming the overnight attack operation martyr soleimani. Only hours after calls for revenge rose up at general soleimanis massive procession iranian rockets were raining down on American Forces in iraq. A Senior Iranian official tweeting a picture of the iranian flag appearing to mock President Trumps similar tweet after soleimani was killed showing the u. S. Flag. But shortly after the iranian attack, President Trump tweeting, all is well. Missiles launched from iran at two military bases located in iraq. Assessment of casualties and damages taking place now. So far, so good. The Iranian Foreign minister tweeting his own message to the United States saying, iran took and concluded proportionate measures in selfdefense adding we do not seek escalation or war but will defend ourselves against any aggression. Good to see you. Reporter just hours before foreign minister zarif told me that the u. S. Would be hit at a time and place where it hurts the most, but ruled out attacks on american civilians. That makes me think clearly they will be u. S. Military targets. Thats what our military people have said, but thats a decision that we will make at the appropriate time. Reporter zarif surely knowing then what was to come later in the evening and giving a warning even then that any risk of further escalation is in the hands of the u. S. Are you concerned that a strong response from iran will end in an allout war . That depends on the United States. The United States took an act of war against iran. It will have to prepare for the consequences. Reporter this morning iranian officials are saying if the u. S. Does not take further military action they wont either. But, again, they are strongly warning the u. S. To leave the region. Robin . All right, martha, thank you. Michael . Thank you, robin. Just hours after those missile attacks a passenger plane crashed in iran killing all 176 people on board. The ukrainian jet, a boeing 737 going down shortly after takeoff and an investigation is under way. Abcs James Longman has the very latest. Good morning, james. Reporter yeah, good morning, michael. It really is a catastrophic scene in tehran this morning. More than 170 people dying in a plane crash there overnight. You can see lumps of a burning wreckage scattered by the boeing 737 passenger jet. It had just left iran bound for ukraine possibly catching fire shortly after takeoff. There were no americans on board but among the 176 victims are at least 82 iranians and 63 canadians. Investigators are scouring fields of smoldering debris near the airport where it came down. They retrieved a black box but havent announced a cause. Initially the Ukrainian Embassy blamed a mechanical failure but the government retracted that statement and say theyre not considering any pilot error. Plielgt flight radar shows the plane never made it above 8,000 feet and it was delayed for almost an hour before leaving. Now, Ukrainian International Airlines Says the plane last had a maintenance check monday and suspended all flights to tehran indefinitely and a number of others are doing so too as a result. 3 1 2 hours after the missiles were launched and as of yet no one established a connection. The iranians have denied involvement but theyre refusing to hand over the black box to boeing which is, of course, a u. S. Company. One major scenario not yet ruled out could this plane have been shot out of the sky accidentally. This is already an extraordinarily tense time in the middle east and now been made all the more complex. George . Okay, james. Thanks very much. So much to sort through with our military and aviation consultant steve ganyard. Lets begin with the retaliation last night from the iranians. A lot of signs after that retaliation that both sides may be looking for an offramp trying to calm down the crisis. I think so, george. We started out the night having iran and the u. S. Be as close to an allout war as since maybe 1988 and we ended up the night with both of the fighters retreating to their corner pretty much as fast as they could. We saw this early on when we looked at the targets the iranians actually shot the missiles at. Actually shot the missiles at and went out of their way not to cause u. S. Casualties. They were trying to do something that they could put up to their own domestic audience and say, look, we stood up to the great satan but wouldnt want to provoke President Trump into a conventional military response. So thats the big question right now. How does President Trump respond to this . We saw the tweet from him overnight saying all is well. Of course, the United States had been considering retaliation and the president had pretty severe threats earlier. What now . I think that everybody is going to want to just calm the situation down. You know, when soleimani was killed, the president was quite clear saying, look, were not here to start a war. This was a preventive act and looked listened to what Prime Minister or foreign minister zarif last night saying, look, we dont want a war either. So everybody is calming the rhetoric down. Everybody is going back to their corners. I think and i hope that what happens now is that we go back to a normal sort of tension within the persian gulf. Yeah, but normal sort of tension still could mean pressure from iranian proxy, iranian militias against u. S. Interests in the region. It could but remember that the president has called out iran and said that anything that happens, theres no hiding behind proxies anymore. Anything that happens against u. S. Forces in the region, we will hold iran accountable. Their only tool against the United States, that asymmetric kind of proxy war that theyve conducted against us for years has been called out which is why last night they had to say we conducted this attack. They couldnt hide behind their proxies. Up against all this, the deadly, deadly plane crash only hours after the rockets went off. Of course, the big question, is this some kind of strange coincidence, terrible mechanical error or tragic military mistake . George, we have data. You and i have talked about mishaps and we have data. The data shows this airplane completely disappeared at 7,900 feet. That is very suspicious. Only two things could cause that, a bomb or the aircraft being shot down. So the regime needs to be held to account. They need to let International Investigators come in and look at this because right now the quick denials from both the iranians and their russian Friends Point to a coverup. Steve ganyard, thanks very much. George, there are also concerns about cyberattacks. Another way iran could retaliate. The governor in texas says theyre already seeing problems. Our chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas has more from washington. Good morning, pierre. Reporter robin, good morning. Overnight growing concerns about potential cyberattacks coming from iran. The governor of texas stating he has evidence that such attacks have begun. Governor greg abbott saying all texans need to be concerned because state agencies are seeing an increase in attacks from iran at roughly a rate of 10,000 per minute. The governor did not specifically say who launched them only that he believed they were coming from iran. This is Homeland Security officials this week have been warning key industry and Government Agency about potential iranian cyberattacks. The industry cited in that new advisory are the financial sector, Power Companies and telecommunications organizations. Homeland Security Officials told companies they should have backups for all their critical information to make sure they were scanning for attacks and warning employees about the iranian threat. And Homeland Security officials continue to send out advisories about irans ability to conduct bombings and other attacks in the United States. Overnight the nypd put out a statement saying theyve increased deployment and adjusted resources across the city out of an abundance of caution. George . Okay, pierre, thanks very much. Lets get the view from the white house and capitol hill right now, cecilia vega and mary bruce. Cecilia, let me begin with you. A fair amount of tension overnight at the white house until the president tweeted out that all is well. Reporter yeah, george, the president was here at the white house when the attack happened, shortly after the attack. We saw the secretary of state, mike pompeo, the defse secretary mark esper show up here at the white house and all met in the situation room. Were told the Vice President was in there, as well. President trump and his National Security team spent most of the night monitoring the situation closely. As weve been saying, though, for the last few day, though, george, the scene here surrounding all this has been chaotic at times, uncertain, confusing. Theres mixed messaging. Its also worth noting all of this is happening at a time when there is a skeletal permanent National Security team in place. Theres no permanent director of national intelligence. Theres no permanent Homeland Security director or secretary and privately, george, were now hearing from both democrats and republicans who are questioning whether weve got the tools in place at a time like this to handle a National Security situation of this magnitude. Mary, democrats have also complained they werent told about the strike ahead of time on soleimani. The administration did fan out on capitol hill last night as these attacks began. Reporter yeah, george, Democratic Leaders were briefed last night over the phone by the Vice President. And today the defense secretary and secretary of state will be here along with other top officials to brief all members of the house and senate. Now, this was a previously scheduled briefing on the killing of soleimani. But now it is obviously made all the more urgent after last nights strike. Democrats this morning are urging the president to avoid a military escalation with iran, fearful, they say, that this could spiral out of control and lead to war. And, cecilia, everyone waiting to hear from the president this morning. There has been some initial word that the president would come before cameras . Reporter yeah, and its supposed to happen this morning. We dont have a time yet, george. So far theyve been tightlipped on exactly what he will say. A lot of speculation to see if he walks this rhetoric back off the edge given so far the lack of casualties. Cecilia vega and mary bruce, thanks very much. Well carry the president s address to the nation live right here on abc and stay on the story all morning long. Michael . All right, george. Were going to turn to that state of emergency in puerto rico. Multiple earthquakes and aftershocks rocking the island killing a man and knocking out electricity for millions. Victor oquendo is in the hard hit city of guanica where theyre feeling after shocks right now, victor. Reporter thats right. Good morning, michael. We felt tremors throughout the night and this morning. This is one of several homes in this neighborhood that was destroyed. Thankfully no one was home at the time. The usgs warning we can expect more seismic activity in the days to come. This morning a state of emergency in puerto rico. The island reeling after the latest quake. Aftershocks forcing Television News anchors to evacuate the studio during a live broadcast. A 6. 4 magnitude tremor leveled homes and damaging schools. This church completely destroyed. The powerful earthquake killing 73yearold nelson martinez. His nephew finding him buried in the rubble. A wall collapsed on his bed. We tried to at least the part that was here and here reporter you tried to remove it. Yeah. Reporter it was too he . It was too heavy, but i removed it. Reporter theyre now dealing with the aftermath like this massive rock slide on a highway completely blocking cars from passing through. This hospital evacuated. Nurses tending to patients lying on beds outside. At one point the entire island losing power. The san juan airport running on backup generators. Authorities in puerto rico now saying most of the island will have power by the end of the week. Hundreds now in shelters, many in tents afraid to go back inside. More than a million customers are still without power this morning. The biggest power plant on the island sustained Severe Damage so bad they might have to call it a total loss and build a new one. Guys . My goodness. Victor, thanks very much. So much news out there this morning. Ginger, of course, live in australia as they fight the raging wildfires and were going to tell you about these teens racing to save koalas. Iran called it fierce revenge for the killing of their Top Commander but no american casualties reported. President trump tweeted overnight all is well. But irans Supreme Leader is calling this a slap in the face of the United States and the president is preparing to address the country later today. We will have that when that happens. All this unfolding as it was unfolding a passenger plane went down in iran killing all 176 people on board. The boeing 737 jet in flames crashing shortly after takeoff. There were no americans on board but among the 176 victims are at least 82 iranians and 63 canadians and an investigation is under way. They have retrieved the black box but as yet no official cause has been announced and multiple countries and airlines weve been reporting are rerouting flights in the region. We turn to the latest on those devastating wildfires in australia. Crews are racing against time to contain those fires before the weather takes a turn because those hot, dry conditions are on the way. Ginger is in australia with more. Good morning, ginger. Reporter michael, i learned something today as we travelled all along the south coast, all these little towns burned out. They have something called a bowling club. Like their social center, the hub of activity. What you see behind me is the Bowling Center and this one had just been renovated. It was supposed to open today. A day that was supposed to be full of celebration but certainly isnt. This morning, exhausted firefighters in a race against time. Their efforts already saving more than 21,000 buildings. They have one more day before conditions get bad again. Yet another hillside of burned homes of the 2,000 that have been lost so far and that haze and smoke so thick, lightning actually started new fires overnight. The rain hampering those efforts for back burning. And an ominous forecast. This friday the high winds and heat return. Funding is the most important and as were saying whether you have compassion towards humanitarian aid or wildlife aid, the things that are needed are so specialized that really funds are the number one most important thing to donate right now. Reporter everybody is saying money is what these organizations need. And were very grateful everybodys big heart is coming through but, of course, its not the end. By friday the temperatures skyrocket. The winds really pick up and the fires will again. Guys . Far from over. Their season just getting started. Thank you, ginger. The latest on the connecticut man, fotis dulos, now charged with murdering his missing wife. Hes expected to be arraigned today. His girlfriend also facing charges. Eva pilgrim is at the courthouse in stamford with all the details. Good morning, eva. Reporter good morning, george. Fotis dulos is expected here in court today. This time facing charges for murdering his estranged wife. Nearly eight months after his estranged wife disappeared fotis dulos taken into custody at his connecticut home, whisked away by state police and now charged with her murder. If this is all the states got, we wonder why it bothered. We are very confident in our odds at trial and we look forward to meeting these allegations in open court. Reporter dulos is being held on 6 million bond. Jennifer dulos and her husband were locked in a bitter custody battle when the mother of five vanished after dropping her kids at school last may. Now, new details laying out how investigators think he carried out the murder. In an arrest warrant police say security video shows a man they believe to be dulos riding a bicycle toward jennifers home the day she vanished. Police think when she returned home dulos was lying in wait. The warrant also alleging he used zip ties to secure and incapacitate jennifer whose blood, police say, was found in multiple locations in the home. Your honor, we enter not guilty pleas. Reporter for months dulos and his exgirlfriend Michelle Troconis have been fighting charges of hindering prosecution after security footage appears to show the couple disposing of jennifers bloodstained clothing. Troconis along with his former civil attorney, Kent Mawhinney also arrested, both facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Dulos maintaining he had nothing to do with her disappearance. Its an exhausting fight. I love my children. Thats about it. Reporter and Jennifer Dulos family say they are relieved the wait for these charges is finally over, but say there is no closure. Nothing will bring jennifer back. George . Okay, eva, thanks very much. Lets bring in dan abrams. You just heard the wait is over. A lot of this evidence has been out for so long. Why did it take so long to bring the charges . I think they were waiting to figure out exactly what role the other two may have played in this, right, because they already laid out in a previous document they released to the court that they believe he was lying in wait. They kind of knew a lot of this. I think the question was, what involvement did Michelle Troconis have and the fact that his former lawyer they charged the lawyer. At first blush you hear that and say, wait, theyre charging his lawyer. Take a step back and the answer is they were actually friends before this. Its not like he went and hired this guy as a result of anything happening. These guys happen to be old friends and according to the arrest warrant, they believe that the lawyer, the civil lawyer may have actually dug a grave where her body was supposed to be placed. Thats how the key there, of course, it was before. Because both Michelle Troconis and the lawyer charged with conspiracy. That means it cant have been after the fact. It cant have been assistance in disposing of the body. It would have to have been an act taken before to prepare for, to plan for, to help execute in the murder itself. Michelle troconis now charged. You surprised she didnt cut a deal . Look, she still could cut a deal. Just because shes been charged doesnt mean she cant later cut a deal. I think a lot of us did think that she was going to turn. But i dont think that we necessarily thought shed be charged with murder either. I mean up to this point the question was, how involved was she . And it is clear that prosecutors believe she was very involved and i think a very serious charge like this may lead her if they want to cut a deal with her. Right . Its two people you have to discuss. Its both her, is she willing to cut a deal and, b, would prosecutors cut a deal with her . Prosecutors laying out the possibility of what a motive might have been saying dulos was deeply in debt. Right. Theyre saying i think it was two things, custody of the children and, number two, a trust that the kids had that he may have wanted access to because he was millions and millions of dollars in debt. When it comes to motive, though, they have to be a little careful. Meaning you dont have to show motive as a prosecutor and what you dont want to do is get distracted from your case meaning, for example, if ty start focusing on the financial motive and on the trust and lets say the evidence isnt as strong as some of the other you dont want the defense to focus on that and say, see, see, this doesnt work and see how hard they hit the motive. Dont have to prove it. Dan abrams, thanks very much. You cant help but think of those five children. Absolutely. Five. Coming up, who is the greatest jeopardy champ of all time . Reporter holzhauer was quick with the buzzer all night, even taunting rutter who lagged behind during the match. James. Aha, what is philadelphia . Yes. No need to rub it in. Reporter but even after two flawless final jeopardy rounds, jeopardy james couldnt catch up to jennings. Come up with schumacher. Look how happy i am about it. Military bases, of course to retaliate for the strike against their Top Commander. They launched more than a dozen missiles at u. S. Military bases in iraq. Want to go back to ian pannell. Good morning, ian. Reporter yeah, good morning, george. Overnight after days of threats iran finally took revenge launching a barrage of missiles targeting two u. S. Military bases and Coalition Troops here in iraq. This, of course, was retaliation for the u. S. Drone strike that killed irans Top Commander, qassem soleimani. Iranian state tv releasing a video appearing to show missiles targeting one of the bases. This morning, miraculously, no reports of u. S. Coalition or iraqi casualties. Sources now telling abc news that u. S. Troops were actually in bunkers at the time of the attack and the Iraqi Prime Ministers Office telling us they were given a verbal warning from the iranians that some kind of attack was imminent. Now, the first strike was at the Al Asad Air Base in western iraq, the Second Attack at Erbil International airport less than two miles from here and certainly heard three explosions when they took place. Two key questions, i think, this morning. Does america respond, and if so, how, and will there be more attacks as iranians expected. Thanks very much. George, President Trump and irans Supreme Leader weighing in on those strikes overnight and just hours after those missile attacks a passenger plane crashed in iran killing all 176 people on board. So lets go back to our Senior Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz with more on all of this. Good morning, martha. Reporter robin, good morning. There is a mix of bravado and caution here in tehran. Irans Supreme Leader celebrating those Ballistic Missile strikes as a slap in the face to the u. S. In a televised address he called for u. S. Troops to get out of the middle east. 15 Ballistic Missiles were fired from various sites here this iran according to the pentagon and while iran claims President Trump was dismissive tweeting all is well, assessment of casualties and damages taking place now. So far so good. There have been no u. S. Or iraqi casualties despite initial claims by iran. But in surreal timing, a ukrainian airliner crashed early this morning just moments after takeoff from tehran airport. A 176 people on board were killed. The majority of them iranians. There were no americans killed, although many canadians. The flight was headed to ukraine. An iranian Government Spokesperson denying it was downed by their missiles but investigators suspect some kind of technical malfunction. Robin. All right, martha, thank you. Michael . Now we go to our gma cover story about grammy winner adeles dramatic transformation because it is making headlines and its causing some controversy, fans concerned about her health and diane macedo is here with more. Good morning, diane. So when celebs dont want their picture taken this is why. Adele was just enjoying herself on a beach. Now shes the center of a debate about her body and the question is it okay to compliment someone on weight loss . Hello from the other side reporter this morning, new photos of adele are stirring controversy. The photos reportedly show the 31yearold singer on a beach in an anguila sparking comments on her apparent weight loss. One writes adele looking freakin amazing. Weightloss. Another reads she took control of her health and got focused. But some fans are criticizing the change commenting that adele looks unhealthy or saying they miss the old adele. Still others say no one should be talking about her weight at all, writing comments like, damned if she did, damned if she didnt. Stop commenting on peoples weight. There is actually some slim shaming going on when it comes to commenting on a persons weight loss. What you want to do is be encouraging and supportive. Reporter adeles weight loss first gained attention in june and more recently when she posted photos from her Christmas Party on instagram but her weight loss journey has been no secret. The mother of one has shared hilarious workout photos. She told vogue in 2016, i was trying to get some stamina for my tour so i lost a bit of weight, and more recently posted this photo with the caption, i used to cry but now i sweat. Some reports say the singer is following the cert food diet where dieters eat food with specific proteins and allow for indulg enss including dark chocolate and red wine. Adele also talked about watching what she eats in order to protect her voice so there are other reasons to diet aside from weight loss but, michael, maybe moms advice holds true, if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all. Dont say anything at all. I agree with you 100 , diane, and im joined by dr. Jen ashton and, doc, youre certified in obesity medicine. Mmhmm. So what are your thoughts on dramatic weight loss . I think we have to state the obvious here. You cannot make an assessment on someones health, wellness or their illness or Disease State simply by looking at a photograph. Nor can you make that assessment even by knowing the number on the scale and we have to remember when you talk about health, illness, disease, wellness, there is a spectrum and being very underweight can be just as unhealthy as being overweight so you do have to take it into context. When you dont know all the information about someone you really should stay in your lane. Yeah. What about the social aspect of this about commenting on someones weight loss . Thats important because we live in a very Judgmental Society and we know that there is stigma, bias and a lot of judgment not just in pop culture but unfortunately in medicine as well and i think we need to understand that when you dont know the intimate details of what someone is going through, something might look positive to you but might actually be negative and vice versa and the example i think that really is applicable here is pregnancy. You know, not every pregnancy is desired or good news so when someone says im pregnant and we say oh, my gosh, thats great. Congratulations. We have to understand that there could be another way of looking at things. Like diane said, if theres nothing good to say, dont say it. If shes happy and healthy, thats all that matters because im still going to listen to adele. You look very nice. Thank you very much, doc. We have to go to you, george. Thank you, michael. We move to a gma parenting alert. The author behind the new york sex is out with a new book called boys sex about navigating sexuality and masculinity and what parents can do to raise good men. Deborah roberts here with that. This is pretty eye opening stuff. If youre the parent of a young man or have a young man in your life, hear this. In this world of me too and times up there is a lot of talk about girls and women and learning how to own their space but what about boys . The author of a new book says while we are we think were talking with them we are neglecting them. Leaving them entrenched in old stereotypes about manhood. I brought you to the best party. Prepare to get bashed. Reporter in the film book Smart High School girls are mostly feeling empowered and guys mostly slackers out to score. Its a stereotype weve grown used to. All the popular culture, the way when you start looking at it that it presents masculinity and manhood and sex for men is incredibly narrow. Reporter author Peggy Orenstein has spent years talking with young people about their intimate lives. In her new book boys sex shes now sounding an alarm about young men. It was like they were channeling 1955, you know. It was still about sexual conquest. It was about dominance, it was about aggression, athleticism and particularly about emotional suppression. You feel the need to be tough. . Yeah, i mean just so that like, you know, you can show people that like youre not i guess someone to mess with. Reporter we gathered together a few guys ages 17 to 22 who admit theyre getting mixed signals about how to be a man. If youre not successful, if you dont have money, if you dont, you wont be able to get the pretty girl or Something Like that. Even though we want to get away from it its just something thats been entrenched in our society for so long. Reporter in fact, she says its the b culture that leads many boys to go along even when they feel other guys are being inappropriate. There is a lot of pressure on guys to be silent. One guy said to me he did try to step up and got mocked by other guys. Ive been in situations like that, but same in the locker room with my teammates. Its like a bond there. Reporter with all the talk about how to treat women in this world of me too, many boys say the discussions in their world are short on details. Be respectful to women, is that really giving you any information about how to be a young man, what to do . No, it doesnt. Theres a lot you actually have to learn about in terms of being respectful. Youre respectful for like what they do or how they feel. Reporter one major issue plaguing boys she says is the lack of discussion regarding sex. Parents are squeamish and rarely talk about caring and intimate relationships. What about boys and intimacy . Do they want intimacy . They do want to connect and are as emotionally invested in the relationships. We have to talk to our boys. They wanted to hear more from their fathers about their own experience, about even their regret. In a way, like, try to be their friend. Dont chastise them rather instead relate with them. Because you yourself were probably in the same position when you were their age. These young men tell us they think that the world is changing but, george, really not so much. The number of sexual assaults against women on College Campuses hasnt changed at all in the last four years so privately there is still this world out there that is not budging. We need a lot more conversations like the one you had. Thats exactly right. Talk to your boys in the car. Then they cant escape. Really talk about those uncomfortable things that, you know, that you know that theyre exposed to. Makes a lot of sense. Deborah thanks very much. Lets go to rob. I have a great piece of video to share. I love this. We talked about the snow yesterday. This is virginia. This is my new friend. Enough snow is falling its got to get thunder excited to catch some. Get that doggy a bowl of water or im outside here in chili times square with Tiffany Haddish and people are walking by going, is that tiffany . What is she doing out there . Were chilly in these temperatures because well pull off a huge surprise because back in october we launched a contest to win a vip screening of tiffanys new movie like a boss, all about friendship, bffs so we went all around the country asking them to send us videos explaining why they deserve to win. Tiffany, you are ready for this. Oh yeah, she ready. I dont know if the two inside are ready. Theyre inside the brooklyn diner with a bunch of other people they think are finalists in the contest. Theyre actually they already won. They dont even know it. Before we get to them, heres their story. For 30 amazing years chadra and candice are inseparable best friends. This is what 30 years of a flawless friendship looks like. Flawless. Reporter their friendship blossomed during their sophomore year of college. Now they cant help but finish each others sentences. We are actually twins separated at birth. Reporter these two have been through the good and the bad but during it all theyve had each others backs. We have seen each other through babies and marriage and separations and all sorts of things. Reporter the perfect pair, ride or die till the end. These two are best friends like a boss. We love you. I love you too. Mwah. Shes my bestie. Ready to go get them, tiffany . She ready. Lets head into the brooklyn diner. Lets do it. Whoo. Whoo. Hey. Hey yall. [ cheers ] oh, my gosh. Hi. Can i get some scrambled eggs with onions and some cheese . I want some turkey bacon, grits with cheese. Shes vegetariaope you know what that means, right, when you start a war to distract . Announcer this is an abc news special report. Now reporting, george stephanopoulos. Good morning. Were coming on the air because President Trump is about to speak to the nation about the crisis with iran. That is the scene at the white house right now. The president will be responding to those Iranian Missile strikes against two u. S. Military bases in iraq last night, retaliation for the u. S. Drone strike against irans Top Commander, qassem soleimani. That was last week. That killed him last week. The iranians have responded with those rockets you see right there, more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles fired at two u. S. Military bases in northern and western iraq last night. So far no reports of u. S. Casualties. You see the president s cabinet coming to join him there. Vice president mike pence, defense secretary esper, secretary of state mike pompeo, along with the joint chief of staff. This will be his First Response after the tweet last night where he said all is well in response to that Iranian Military strike. The iranians have said that this is all the retaliation they will have for now, the Supreme Leader. They claim there were dozens of u. S. Casualties in the strike but the pentagon has said no american casualties in their initial damage assessments. Last week President Trump ordered that drone strike, saying that general soleimani was planning an imminent attack against the United States. That is coming in for some question on capitol hill as the intelligence has not been released but so far at least weve seen the iranian retaliation, right now, missile strikes which have caused no american casualties. The big question right now, will the president choose to escalate his response or take this as an opportunity to calm the crisis down. The iranians in their first message have said that is what they want. The president is responding now. As long as im president of the United States, iran will never be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon. Good morning. Im pleased to inform you, the American People should be extremely grateful and happy. No americans were harmed in last nights attack by the iranian regime. We suffered no casualties. All of our soldiers are safe and only minimal damage was sustained at our military bases. Our great American Forces are prepared for anything. Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world. No american or iraqi lives were lost because of the precautions taken, the dispersal of forces, and an Early Warning system that worked very well. I salute the incredible skill and courage of americas men and women in uniform. For far too long, all the way back to 1979 to be exact, nations have tolerated irans destructive and destabilizing behavior in the middle east and beyond. Those days are over. Iran has been the leading sponsor of terrorism and their pursuit of Nuclear Weapons threatens the civilized world. We will never let that happen. Last week we took Decisive Action to stop a ruthless terrorist from threatening american lives. At my direction, the United States military eliminated the worlds top terrorist, qassem soleimani. As the head of the quds force, soleimani was personally responsible for some of the absolutely worst atrocities. He trained terrorist armies including hezbollah, launching terrorist strikes against civilian targets. He fueled bloody civil wars all across the region. He viciously wounded and murdered thousands of u. S. Troops including the planting of roadside bombs that maim and dismember their victims. Soul ma soleimani directed the attacks that badly wounded four Service Members and killed one american, and he orchestrated the violent assault on the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. In recent days he was planning new attacks on american targets, but we stopped him. Soleimanis hands were drenched in both american and iranian blood. He should have been terminated long ago. By removing soleimani, we have sent a powerful message to terrorists, if you value your own life you will not threaten the lives of our people. As we continue to evaluate options in response to iranian aggressi aggression, the United States will immediately impose additional punishing economic sanctions on the iranian regime. These powerful sanctions will remain until iran changes its behavior. In recent months alone, iran has seized ships in international waters, fired an unprovoked strike on saudi arabia, and shot down two u. S. Drones. Irans hostility substantially increased after the foolish Iran Nuclear Deal was signed in 2013. They were given 150 billion, not to mention 1. 8 billion in cash. Instead of saying thank you to the United States, they chanted death to america. In fact, they chanted death to america the day the agreement was signed. Then iran went on a terror spree funded by the money from the deal and created hell in yemen, syria, lebanon, afghanistan, and iraq. The missiles fired last night at us and our allies were paid for with the funds made available by the last administration. The regime also greatly tightened the reigns on their own country, even recently killing 1,500 people at the many protests that are taking place all throughout iran. The very defective jcpoa expires shortly anyway and gives iran a clear and quick path to nuclear breakout. Iran must abandon its Nuclear Ambitions and end its support for terrorism. The time has comfort united kingdom, germany, france, russia and china to recognize this reality. They must now break away from the remnants of the iran deal or jcpoa. And we must all Work Together toward making a deal with iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place. We must also make a deal that allows iran to thrive and prosper and take advantage of its enormous untapped potential. Iran can be a great country. Peace and stability cannot prevail in the middle east as long as iran continues to foment violence, unrest, hatred and war. The civilized world must send a clear and unified message to the iranian regime, your campaign of terror, murder, mayhem will not be tolerated any longer. It will not be allowed to go forward. Today i am going to ask nato to become much more involved in the middle east process. Over the last three years, under my leadership our economy is stronger than ever before and america has achieved energy independence. These historic compliments changed our strategic priorities. These are accomplishments that nobody thought were possible, and options in the middle east became available. We are now the number one producer of oil and natural gas anywhere in the world. We are independent, and we do not need middle east oil. The American Military has been completely rebuilt under my administration at a cost of 2. 5 trillion. U. S. Armed forces are stronger than ever before. Our missiles are big, powerful, accurate, lethal and fast. Under construction are many hyper sonic missiles. The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it. American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent. Three months ago after destroying 100 of isis and its territorial caliphate, we killed the savage leader of isis, albaghdadi, who was responsible for so much death including the mass beheadings of christians, muslims, and all who stood in his way. He was a monster. Albaghdadi was trying again to rebuild the isis caliphate and failed. Tens of thousands of isis fighters have been killed or captured during my administration. Isis is a natural enemy of iran. The destruction of isis is good for iran, and we should Work Together on this and other shared priorities. Finally, to the people and leaders of iran, we want you to have a future and a great future, one that you deserve, one of prosperity at home and harmony with the nations of the world. The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it. I want to thank you, and god bless america. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. President trump right there with his response to the iranian counterattack against u. S. Military bases last night saying that iran is standing down. Iran appears to be standing down. That is the message from President Trump after announcing that americans should be grateful that no americans were harmed in the attack. There were no casualties and minimal damage at the u. S. Military bases according to President Trump. The president also though had some strong words for iran saying iran will never be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon on his watch. Also announcing that he will be imposing tough new sanctions on iran but not announcing any new military action that might escalate this crisis with iran. I want to go to ian pannell, our senior Foreign Correspondent in erbil. The president confirming no casualties, also saying that the Early Warning system put in place seemed to work. As youve been reporting all morning long, the iraqis were given a heads up by the iranians. Reporter yeah, thats right. Some people say when is an attack not an attack. Thats not to minimize what happened and the gravity of it but the fact there were no u. S. Casualties, Coalition Casualties and iraqi casualties is remarkable given the scale of the attack. Abc is reporting there were a number of short and Medium Range Missiles fired from multiple locations in iran and two sites in iraq. Its remarkable that no one was injured. We know that u. S. Troops were in the bunker when rockets were fired. They were given a call by the iranians to tell them there was some form of attack coming. They didnt say where, what particular sites and they didnt say when. Weve asked repeatedly of the iraqis and also weve asked the americans whether or not they communicated with each other about this threat. One presumes that they did but neither side is willing to say so because potentially it compromises them. I think it was conciliatory. I think many people will be pleased with this. The question on the ground is how do the iraqi militias respond. Remember, it was their actions in the first place who fired the u. S. Rockets, killed the u. S. Contractor that started to lead to this escalation. Were certainly hearing from the leader of one of those organizations that is prescribed by the United States as a terrorist organization this evening. Theyre saying the iranians have had their turn. Now its time for the iraqi militias to respond. We will be watching that and of course were going to be watching iran. Our chief Global Affairs anchor Martha Raddatz in tehran right now. Martha, it does seem to be some delicate choreography here. The president saying the iranians appear to be standing down. The foreign minister earlier today said that the iranians had concluded their attacks. Were seeing conciliatory moves wrapped up in harsh rhetoric. Reporter exactly, george. Iran really walked a fine line here. We saw all week the emotion in this country for the loss of soleimani. Millions taking to the streets and shouting for revenge. But the iranian officials had to know that they would be ending up in a huge conflict if they made a very, very massive attack somewhere, so they walked that line very well. They appeased the people here in so many ways taking out some sort of retaliatory attack, but no loss of life and no larger conflict. The iranranians, the foreign minister, told me that if they do not attack again, if the United States does not take military action, iran will not either, george. Martha raddatz, thanks. Cecilia vega at the white house. The president declaring somewhat of a victory and reinforcing the message several days ago after the killing of soleimani, the United States does not want a war. Reporter his final words were the United States is ready to embrace peace. This was the greatest test that we have seen President Trump have so far, tface so far since taking office. Just a few days ago, hours before that strike hit yesterday he was using strong rhetoric, talking about any retaliation by iran would be met by a disproportionate response by the United States. We are really seeing him walk that back off the ledge here today, and as ian said, a lot of that will come as a sigh of relief for many people watching the tensions increase over the last few days here. Despite the mixed messages, despite the fact that the white house still has yet to give a consistent answer on what started all of this and the why now on why we struck soleimani in the first place, but we are seeing here today a deescalation from this white house, a strong change in rhetoric, and george, its worth pointing out that this is a president who campaigned and is now facing reelection again on his promise to end wars in the middle east. Getting out of the middle east. And the president calling on nato to get into the middle east in those remarks as well. Cecilia, thanks very much. As the president said, no american, no iraqi casualties last night but just hours after the Iranian Missile attacks on the u. S. Bases, a passenger plane taking off from tehrans airport went down just moments after takeoff killing more than 170 people on board. I want to bring in our aviation consultant, david kerley, for more on this. Initially the ukrainians were backing up what the iranians were saying, that this is a mechanical failure. Now theyre saying the investigation is continuing. We dont know if this was something internal or external t to the aircraft. There was some catastrophic failure. An engine could blow up. There could be a bomb on board, or the possibility that it was shot down. We dont have indication of either of those. We see that it disappeared from flight tracking which suggests a catastrophic failure. The iranians have the black box. That will have the answers for us but they said theyre not going to provide it to the manufacturer of boeing or the american officials and they have not said whos going to read it out. If there was a shootdown, theres the possibility that the Intelligence Community tracked radar that actually could see that missiles were actually fired at this aircraft. Way too early to tell. There are indications on the wreckage as well if it was shot down or a bomb blast. The question is who will the iranians let see the wreckage and the black box that could tell us what happened to this airliner. Right now no one is seeing it. David kerley, thanks very much. Were going to return to our regular programming. Our coverage will continue on this crisis on abc news live with tom llamas. Taronda jones. She is so resilient.
