Showdown with the mayor continuing to speak as the crowd shouted them down for over 30 minutes. We have a terrible housing crisis here in california and we see the results every single day [ chanting ] reporter this was supposed to be about senate bill 50, that would create more housing around transit hubs but anger over affordability bubbled over the crowd which blocked news cameras and surrounded the mayor, demanding she take action. You the mayor. Its like were talking to a wall, a brick wall, and its hurtful to look at someone who was born and raised here and she doesnt feel the same as we feel. Reporter a half hour later in the quiet of her office, the mayor respond. What you see is such intense passion, anger, and an explosion around just how dysfunctional our housing system is right now reporter shes backing ways that adopt new ways for housing that fits in locally. We need more subsidized housing but we need more market rate housing to try to bring down price force the middle class. Reporter senate bill 50 is supposed to come up for a vote by the end of the month. The amendment added to it would basically give local communities more flexibility to meet state requirements but also localize the standards imposed by it. All right. Leslie, thank you so much. All right. Were going to get back to the breaking story, which is the news of iran launching attacks against a u. S. Military base in iran. Joining us on the phone is congressman eric swalwell. Mr. Swalwell, whats your Immediate Reaction certainly given the events in the past 48 hours or so . Well, im not sure if hes indeed on the phone or can hear us. Congressman, im not sure if you could hear the question. Your reaction to what were seeing taking place in the middle east. Im seeing some of the first images come in of, you know, a base on fire from what appears to be missile attacks that the iranians are claiming they are, and so praying for our troops and personnel who are stationed over there and running for their lives from this rain of missiles, but, you know, just right now, you know, hoping, you know, for the best for their safety. Is there anything you can tell us about what happens now for all the people stationed at our bases . Well, you know, we do all we can fur the embassys lives and our troops in iraq and protect them. But i also believe its important that we not dramatically escalate this to a war with iran. We do not want a war with iran. We have learned hard lessons in the past half century that war in the middle east is costly in lives and money and just the disruption it causes to cultures. It seems that pulling out of the iran nuclear deal, once we did that, things have only gotten worse. What is your expectation from congress at this point in terms of action to be taken . It appears as though the president has launched that initial assassination on the iranian general, more or less on his own with a handful of advisers, not a lot of congressional oversight or approval if any. What do you anticipate happening now that the situation has clearly escalated . Ive been briefed on the intelligence justifying that attack, and i dont believe there is sufficient evidence that there was an imminent attack that this general was planning. Hes a very bad person, but theres lot of bad people in the world we do not drop bombs on because we understand theres going to be the day after, and if youre not prepared for the day after, you could be putting american lives at risk and possibly going into a largescale war. And its my hope that in congress i was sitting with Speaker Pelosi in the Steering Policy Committee which i chair as we learned news of this, and our colleagues on the democratic side want to at least make sure we exercise our authority in congress to make sure we know that the time, the terrain, the troop numbers, and that we put restrictions in place that do not send us to war with iran. So were not helpless. Were looking at what that will be, and i imagine with this attack, the need do that will be even more imminent. We know that the president has been briefed on the situation and the expectation that the American People will hear from him this evening . I hope that he starts to listen to the Intelligence Community and generals and people who i think know the consequences of escalating this conflict. He should tell the American People, one, why the evidence he believes he saw justified taking action against iran. He should legally justify why we are doing that. And also why we went for such a highranking official knowing that the retaliation could put american lives at risk. And im afraid this president doesnt think about any of that. He thinks about what, you know, serves his interests. I, again, pray for our servicemembers and personnel over there. They deserve to be safe. Congressman, were being told just as were speaking here, that more missiles are inbound. What do you anticipate happening in the next 24 hours on the congressional level to try to make sure that this doesnt get completely out of control . Were to receive a briefing tomorrow from the secretary of state and others. You know, im very interested in, you know, what they have to say to jeff phi what theyre doing over there. Again, were not helpless to act. You know, thank god theres a democratic majority in the house of representatives that can put in some parameters to limit, you know, the recklessness of this president , but, you know, frankly, i think, first and foremost, were thinking about the troops and Family Members at home a home, and in our own house we have a blue star mom whose son just returned, a Family Member of my wifes whose son just returned from the battlefield. We know all too well the anxiety that military members have as they see this play out. Congressman swalwell, thank you for joining us today and giving us insight. Im sure well be talking with you more in the days to come. My pleasure. The news broke today youre stepping down after 23 years some of what made you decide that its time for a change . It has been such an honor of my life today in terms of my profession to serve in this role for 23 years. My wife and i took a lot of long walks over the holidays, larry, talked about the future, and felt that were leaving the organization in a really strong place, great initiatives, great staff, and its time to start something new in my career. Just to put this in perspective because we go back 23 years. You started the job before facebook, before twitter, before google. Did you ever imagine these companies would have the impact we now know they have today when you first were getting involved with this Leadership Group . Isnt that whats exciting about the innovation of economy in america . We dont know what that next great invention, product, or service that impacts our lives or livelihoods might be. I remember going to a smat company in Mountain View with two bean bag chairs in the waiting room and graffiti on the wall inside, and that was going well 25 employees, and they joined then it. Was in their dna. Be a Great Company, build a great culture, but care about the community in which youre located when they were only 25 employees. Do you think Companies Like google have been able to stick to that earl mantra . We see the companies i go back to when Mark Zuckerberg was testifying before congress and making reference as, we started in the garage. These companies are just gargantuan at this point with impacts that affect our lives. Do you think theyve been able to stick to their initial goals . Thats what we want to be cooked into the dna of every company. Of the 350Member Companies who own the Silicon ValleyLeadership Group, about 60 are pure startups. What we remind them, yes, build a Great Company and culture, never forget where you and the employees and families live. Did you just quit this job without knowing where youre going to or where are you . Thank you. I always felt from a personal integrity perspective, my 300 employees are paying me to do this job, not look for the next clandestine opportunity.
