Theres not that much activity on the street at night. During the day we have the high school so theres always somebody coming and going so i dont think anything is going to happen then. Reporter one victim heard noise overnight and spotted three speak uspects. She told police they were hispanic, one male, two females. This car was different. There could be a potential break in this case. Council member said that he called in to complain that the police did not respond to his call. However, there is a fingerprint on this vehicle and that could be possibly linked to the culprit. Police believe organized groups are behind the crimes to obtain goods for overseas sales. Residents here may not know theyre parking in the latest crime hot spot. Some vehicles show evidence of sitting here for long periods thinking its safe, not so anymore with all this broken glass. In the east bay two men accused in a laptop robbery that ended in the victims death had their first court appearance. The suspects are accused of running down the victim as they drove away with his laptop last month. Both suspects have a prior robbery conviction. A public defender was assigned to the case today. Reeds aunt says shes praying for him and for the family. Of course our hearts go out to the family who the victim is and what theyre enduring now. Tributes were taken down to be placed in a memorial book for his family. His picture will remain. His death was part of a 7 increase in Violent Crime in oakland last year. There was also a spike in property crimes. Today city officials talked about what they plan to do to make oakland safer in 2020. It is indeed always a disappointment when you see any increase in crime. Reporter Oakland Police chief says 2019 was a tough year for her department. There were 4 crimes and 7 more homicides. We do know that we had some homicides that were related to gangs that we do not typically see become active in conflict. Reporter like other cities there was also a spike in car break ins and stolen laptops. This year oakland task force to tackle the issue. And we will each be giving two officers per month to come together and to work in each others jurisdictions with a focus on those. Its not possibe to arrest our way out of this problem. Reporter the chief of the new department of violence prevention. His job is to look at issues such as homelessness that lead to crimes. Part of his work is to bring together Community Groups to build stronger relationships with Law Enforcement in an effort to bring about a drop in crime. One of the toughest parts of building a better bay area is dealing with the housing crisis, but new numbers show the number of vacant homes in the bay area could make a difference. We spoke with experts about what is driving these numbers. Were live in san jose tonight. Reporter you were thinking with a view like that one right behind us there wouldnt be any vacancies in this neighborhood. That entire building is vacant. It was taken off the market in november. You will find many buildings like that one all across the bay area. If youve noticed more vacant homes you, thats because theres an estimated 46,000 vacant homes across the bay area. Constructed and theyre not occupied yet so a chunk of those will be there. We know there isnt a ton of supply coming on the market right now so that can account for a few thousand homes. We also know that sometimes homes are just not ready to be sold. Reporter zillow reports there are a little over 7,000 homes on the market. San jose in the 2,000 range. Reporter according to the census bureau, San Francisco has the most vacant homes, 11,760, oakland 5,898, san jose 3,985, berkel berkeley, 1,738. In the east bay there are close to 8,000 vacancies. What we typically see is when a house stays vacant its because the buyers have started making it their own and have not moved in. Weve seen them take up to a year. A suspect tried to set a san jose gas station on fire. Abc 7 has the story. Reporter chaos saturday morning as Police Responded to the gas station after learning a man was trying to light a gas pump on fire. The manager was on the phone with her employee who watched it all unfold. The moment i called her about turning off the pumps, we hear the shooting and i told her hide. Reporter the officers tried to deescalate the situation by using stun guns and a taser. Police say those efforts were unsuccessful as the suspect charged at them with a metal rod. He was then shot three times by the officers who have been placed on routine administrative leave. The suspect remains in stable condition.
