President trump speaking out for the First Time Since that strike saying the killing of the iranian commander was in response to an imminent attack and the pentagon deploying roughly 3,500 more troops to the middle east with other troops in the region placed on high alert as iran vows revenge. Here at home authorities are assessing the potential for retaliation here at home beefing up security and tensions caused the stock market to fall and oil prices to surge. Intelligence assessment says iran will almost certainly retaliate overseas against u. S. And israeli officials and interests. And the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff telling abc news that risks of inaction exceeded risks of action and that now the ball is in the iranian court. This comes as the United States is now sending 3,500 more to the middle east after protesters stormed the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. The order to deploy more troops coming after President Trump addressed the public for the first time explaining the reason for executing the attack. Soleimani was plotting imminent and sinister attacks on american diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him. Reporter the attack took place at Baghdad Airport thursday night after the u. S. Began tracking soleimani with a drone, launching missiles that destroyed his vehicles and left soleimani and several others dead. An image from the wreckage identified a large ring soleimani was known to wear. The response in the middle east immediate with protests in a number of cities and fears of worse to come. He is one of the most popular people in iran. Because of that, they are very much painted into a corner where they have to respond, at least in kind or perhaps even escalate this current tension. The ball is now firmly in the iranian court, but i think the feeling here in the region is that nothing is likely to happen until the process of actually burying soleimani in his hometown takes place. Id like to ask you to take us inside the minds of the iranians this morning as they plot their next move. They may feel they need to exact revenge. Thats the word theyre using revenge. But i imagine they are also aware if they do something to trigger an allout war theyre likely to lose. Thats true, dan. The u. S. Has changed the terms of the relationship with iran by saying that iran will be held accountable for anything that happens, theyve taken away the use of surrogates. So no longer can the iranians use hezbollah or hamas or iranian militia proxies. We cant see tankers blowing up in the middle of the night in the persian gulf. The u. S. Holds iran accountable. It means that anything will be met with a Strong Military response. So that has to go into their calculus and its a very different one than just a few days ago. Critics of the president , we heard this from Bernie Sanders, theyve said that this drone strike was an unwise escalation of tensions with iran. Others, however, are saying it is a deescalation that convinces the iranians to stop all of these provocations. What is your view . That it could go to either extreme. Dan, there are real problems in iran. There are protests in the street. Thousands of protesters have been killed by Iranian Security forces. The Iranian Regime may be looking for some way to deflect that anger away from the regime and on to the u. S. And may pick a bigger fight. On the other hand, if you remember back in the late 80s, the socalled tanker war, the shoot down of the iranian aircraft, the iranians took a punch then and were quiet for years. So there is hope this is a punch that will be taken for what it was, a defensive measure and the iranians may back down and be less provocative in the future. I want to give you a chance to respond to one more criticism of the president , we just heard one from joe biden. There may not be some larger strategy here associated with the drone strike but actually you and i were talking over email. You think actually there may be a strategy at work that has to do with getting iran out of iraq . Yeah, the u. S. Is sort of calling the bluff of iraqi politicians saying are you with the iranians or with the iraqi people here . Again, iraq is coming apart at the seams and this is a chance for the u. S. To push iran to the side politically as a new government is formed. If the u. S. Can do that, then iranian influence in western iraq, in syria, in lebanon, all those places where they have maligned influence, may be on the wane. It is a new possibility, a new policy. But given the state of politics in iraq, it has a chance. All we know is things are much more uncertain this morning than they were two mornings ago.
