A woman screaming. The woman they came to rescue said she was very concerned about the child who was inside, but the child was found ssing. Patrons at a gas station in the town of cambria recognze the vehicle from the amber alert and intervened. San jose police are grateful that the public got involved. This is Sergeant Enrique garcia. They detained him until police got there and took him into custody and the girl is safe. Reporter the 2yearold girl, bethanie carraza, was apparently taken from this home in san jose shortly after 10 00 p. M. Sunday. The mother was found stabbed by neighbors after they heard screaming. My roommates were saying that she was yelling help, help, he is going to kill he. And then from there one of my roommates peeked from the window, saw her hopping over the fence right there. Reporter they and paramedics found the mother slumped over the trunk of torres parked car. She remains in Critical Condition but stable. With the child in custody and the mother hospitalized, its suspected the mother will be turned over to Child Protective Services until an appropriate next of kin can be located and the background checked. The process can take days. At next door solutions, a Nonprofit Organization that supports victims of domestic abuse, a major concern is what trauma the child may have suffered from the mothers stabbing. What is the affect on this child to have witnessed Something Like that, if the child witnessed the physical assault on the mother. Those are all unknowns. Thats part of what our local system tries to do. The Domestic Violence agencies are here for the victim. Neighbors say theyre happy that the child was found quickly by people made aware of the situation by the amber alert. Im thankful that they found the little girl and that they arrested the person who did the crime. There are clearly two elements of luck involved in the story. The fact that the public connected the dots on the amber alert and recognized the vehicle. Also the fact that the father of the girl may apparently left the car keys locked inside the car at the gas station. That gave Police Plenty of time to arrive on the scene and find the girl safe. Weve been following the progress of a controversial homeless shelter in San Francisco along the embarcadero. Phil matier reports the Navigation Center is expected to open this week. The shelter near the bay bridge will house up to 200 people. Neighbors who have fought against the Navigation Center argue it will bring more drugs and crime to that area. Police say theyre setting up a twoblock safety zone around the center to keep loiterers, homeless encampments and drug use outside of the zone. The homeless can now sleep in the sidewalk or the public park now that the Supreme Court is refusing to hear a case in idaho that case would have made it a crime to camp and sleep in public places. Last year the 9th Circuit Court of appeals in San Francisco said that idaho case was cruel and unusual punishment when the homeless have no place to go. And it looks like youre ready to ship one out, dion. Actually, i just borrowed somebody elses package for the sake of this live shot, but yes, i am here at an independent shipper where they handle fed ex and ups among other services. The postal carrier has been in and out all day. There are lots of customers in the background, and its because of the way we shop and Consumer Habits changing. Thats also changing the way we ship. Its beginning to look a lot like the busiest shipping week of the year. The u. S. Postal service delivering more than 800 million packages across the country. Just here in the city of San Francisco last week, we delivered 750,000 packages. This nob hill station alone handles 35,000 packages a week during the holidays. Double the regular volume, an increase partially attributed to purchases from online retailers like amazon. Its been good for us. Packages mean revenue. With first class package revenue looming after december 20th and priority deadlines the very next day, San Francisco is doing what it can, even bringing in around 50 carriers from across the state to help. Its a special detail. They basically flew us all up here just to assist and help out delivering the mail and make sure everything the Customer Service is excellent. While the usps is running at Maximum Capacity, independent ship earps are as well, but for aother reason. This is all incoming. Shipping in Presidio Heights is in their busy season as well. Back to you guys in the studio. Two questions now. Whos dog is that . Is that somebody that is shipping a package . The dog hangs throughout just to bring people joy and a furry friend . A community dog, right . I dont know. But i would like to share him or her, whoever this dog belongs to. We have an actual question as well. With the increase in shipping, u. S. Postal service. Are they bringing in carriers from other parts of the state . Yeah, thats a really great question. In the package i mentioned that yes, they are bringing in about 50 carriers from across the state, including los angeles. But what they really need is longterm career carriers, people who will stay for decades to come, get to know their community. The folks at usps wanted me to stress that they have full benefits, and you can apply online at their website. We have a link to it at ours, abc7news. Com. Back to you. Thank you, dion. When the rise of skywalker hits theaters, it will mark the end of a triple trilogy of films that started back in 1977. Skywalkers director, producer and cowriter j. J. Abrams also happens to be a huge fan of the franchise. He used to be in the audience watching the originals when he was a kid. All i know is that the ambition of this movie, which was always pretty enormous in terms of scope and spectacle and scale and all that, we were always conscious of the fact that none of that matters if youre not emotionally connected and if youre not feeling something. What are you doing there, c3p0 . Taking one last look, sir. At my friends. There is nothing, not a cynical drop in this movie. No, no. But it is. I think its incredibly emotional and incredibly fulfilling. Just how emotional . In fact, just bring the box, man. Bring the box and put it next to you. Really . No one sees. But im used to the joy that this gives me and the excitement and the thrill. With joy comes sacrifice, my friend. There is a lot to sum up here, and the man in charge felt the pressure to do it right. I felt a level of fear in it. I felt the challenge of it, of ending this thing. Not just three films, but nine films, making a movie that works on its own as well. It was just it was a daunting prospect. For abc 7 news. The red carpet premiere is tonight in l. A big honor for golden state warriors. We are live with Team President rick welts. Thats coming up next. Now news to build a better bay area from abc7. Everyone in the nba, as im sure you know, looks at this franchise today as really the sleeping giant. Not only in the nba, but in our industry. And it all starts with ownership, and these guys are a little bit on the persuasive side. But the buzz out there outside of the bay area is that there is something happening here that is going to be very special. Wow. What a prophetic moment from 2011. And rick welts joins us in studio now. You had no idea at the time that all this was going to unfold. Five finals appearances. First interview, i just laid out the game plan. Five straight finals, three championships, brandnew arena, the whole thing. And they followed the path. So this award was given out by the sports business journal. We should point that out for people that arent familiar with it. Thats the industry standard. It is. Its not just nba, not just nfl. Raymond ritter, your ace pr man says 122 American Sports franchises are in this, and youre number one. Very humbling. It was knotts something that certainly you campaign for, not something you would expect. But what you said is really whats significant. Its your own industry, the people within your own industry who are giving you this recognition. I dont know a better word for it than humbling, but its thrilling for all of us at the warriors at chase center who have been a part of this for the past decade. We gathered everybody together this morning to celebrate and toast this. So it means a lot. It means a lot to a lot of people. Do you know how its weighted in terms of championships versus business buildings, et cetera . How do they go about it in the formula . Well, its the sports business journal. So there is a weighting toward your business activities. But as we were talking to the staff today, i dont think this would have happened without the Basketball Team that really set the standard for winning this decade with those three championships. So i think steph curry to eric haas in the equipment room to the ticket sales staff to the broadcast cast, everybody has a hand in winning Something Like this. So what are you most proud of on the business side . I assume youre going say chase center, because that took years and years. That was your baby, essentially. Well, it was everyone in the organizations baby for seven years. Without question, we had a Perfect Campaign for this award. We started with joe leka and peter guber and we ended the decade with the opening of chase center which we hope will be judged over time as one of the two or three great arenas in the world. And, yes, to get that project done in this city, i think we have to consider to be one of the really great accomplishments. We were looking at footage of the team winning championships at the time. Because you had decades of nba experience. Pthat we ran, this was seen as the sleeping giant, but many people thought it was never going to wake up. It was just going to remain a sleeping giant. Well said. But all the ingredients were there, right . If you could get this in the right ownership and management hnds, all the ingredients were there to have it happen. Look at this amazing place where we live. Look at an economy thats second to none in the world. Look at this incredible fan support over years and years and years. It was all here. It just had to get organized in the right way. And it didnt hurt to have this young point guard steph curry on the roster when this whole thing started. Not a bad pick a few years ago. In the back drop of all this success, with the building opening, and we were there when you got the keys the very first day you have a record of 523 right now. Clearly this wasnt exactly what you envisioned for year one. How you dealing with that . This team has been amazing. Its like basketball nirvana for most of the decade. And now its rough. Well, its rough today, but i think you do it the same way you got to where you got. You put your head down every day and you try to get a little bit better. I think for us, this is really unusual situation. Im not sure i can point to another team thats been in this situation. To have a record like this and have two of the top perhaps ten players in the nba coming back to your team. We dont know when and how thats going to unfold, but there is so much hope and optimism in the long run, and the hope is what were experiencing right now is going to pay dividends because of the experience because of the game situations that players who opportunity are getting that experience. I think you have a really hopeful vibe around the team, especially as we look toward the end of this season and next season that maybe it wasnt exactly what we had hoped for for the first year at chase, but i wouldnt bet against the longterm kind of return of the warriors. Get a lottery pick. Get everybody healthy. Sign a free agent or two, back in business. There you go. Congratulations. Team of the decade. It couldnt have happened without you. Thank you, rick. Congratulations to to rick and the warriors. Its a small bump in the road. The journey is a long one and a good one. Lets check out with drew. See how long our journey on dry roads may continue. My guess is not very long. About 24 more hours of the dry weather. Tonight its all about the Cool Temperatures dropping into the mid30s to mid40s overnight tonight. Break down the day tomorrow with 12hour day planner. Sun is up in about 7 19. The clouds are thick throughout the day. It is dry during the daylight hours. Mostly cloudy and temperatures in the mid and upper 50s. We bring back the rain starting on wednesday, early in the morning. A level 1 light system. Light to moderate rain. A quarter to 3 4 inch and it does turn windy with wind gusts about 15 to 35 miles per hour. The accuweather sevenday forecast. Well show you the next seven days. Cloudy, breezy tomorrow. Wet in the morning. And then cloudy thursday and friday. But then the weekend, rain returns saturday night and likely a damp day on sunday with scattered showers even into monday, guys. You can do that in san jose. Dont go to tokyo. Safe some money. Viva calle is one of the most fantastic ways to engage with your community. See things you havent seen while youre driving the streets. They shut off six miles, and you can just walk the route, bike the route, skate, pedicab, whatever you want. And thats a really fantastic way to see the city. And star wars fans . Of course. Caesar chavez plaza, its all great. There is one that captured my attention in your book. Its a garden, a very unique one. Absolutely. I kind of stumbled upon this, having lived here for years. Nolas iris garden. And its a private garden up in the east foothills. It is open only about five or six weeks out of the year to the public, and its thousands of iris, and no nola is exactly the kind of northwestern is so passionate. Shes got great stories. She is really cool to talk to. Really opens your eyes to the history of the air and you get a great view up in the hills of the valley. Sounds like a great place to take photos. If you have a little ansel adams in you. Did you discover anything about emerging trends, anything evolves in san jose as you did the research here . You know, i honestly feel like we are such a communitybased city. So anything that is communal is great. Your eating, your trends where youre eating and having a conversation with strangers. The people who are really passionate about it. Before we go, one final place, in fact, youll be appearing there this thursday to talk about your book. Our boutiquey. It is a geek easy. Some of it was created by local artists from a local nonprofit called creative growth. Abc7 Community Journalist melissa pixar introduces us to some of the artists. I would be crazy if Stephen Curry sees my art. Hi, everyone. Today were in San Francisco at the brandnew chase center where were walking in with creative growth to see their art for the first time. Its the largest art center for people with Developmental Disabilities in the world, and its right here in oakland. The artwork is a portal to the life. It tells us about who they are in a way that they might not be able to have that dialogue with you in the way we expect people to be able to engage with us. I bring all my emotions into my artwork. I love it because i can do many different kind of things for many different kind of times. We have six artists with work at the chase center, which is amazing. The artists are so excited because being in oakland, everyone knows the warriors. To be a part of their home arena and to have work in San Francisco is fantastic. People who are disenfranchised from society in many ways and popular culture, watching the game on tv and knowing they have work in that building that theyre seeing, i mean, thats that would be impressive for anybody. The chase center is a symbol of our longstanding commitment here to the bay area and its really important for us to be showcasing with local organizations like creative growth, to see them come in and take a piece of art that theyve been working so hard on that normally one or two or maybe a dozen people might experience. For them to know that millions of people from across the world are going to come here to the chase center to experience what the bay has to offer, and one of those being their piece of art is phenomenal. To see that joy and excitement, its pretty fun to experience the day with them. I just cant believe that its here. Hanging at the chase center. Im wondering how people will feel about how they will feel about it, looking at my artwork. We were over the moon that this was going to happen. I just think its really important for them to see their artwork out in the world. I think its a great opportunity for them, and the more that they can see how important their artwork is, the better it is for them. The artwork is a portal to the life. And its really important for the next generation to see that while some of their communication skills might be different, the opportunities are greater now than theyve ever been. What a wonderful program. And the warriors have made a great commitment to placing fine works of art all throughout the arena. On the outside, if you still dont have your credit card photo yet, they have the biggest Christmas Tree ever outside chase center. So head down there for that. Thanks for joining us. Im larry beil.
