And good morning, america on this sunday. Were heading into another major week in the impeachment inquiry, a series of major witnesses set to testify including Ambassador Gordon Sondland, the trump appointee at the center of the campaign to pressure ukraine to investigate the president s political rivals. Meanwhile overnight, a series of new developments. House democrats releasing new transcripts from witnesses who testified behind closed doors. One witness raising questions about whether the white house left out key details about that now infamous phone call between trump and the president of ukraine. And in a potentially troubling sign for the presiden president , a defeat in the deep red state of louisiana. The incumbent democrat beating out the republican heavily backed by trump. We have it all covered this morning. George is standing by with analysis. We begin here with abcs david wright at the white house. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, eva. There really is no such thing as a weekend for these impeachment investigators. Not only did they hear for five hours behind closed doors from an official from the White House Office of management and budget, they also released new transcripts which raise Big Questions going forward. After the white house ordered him not to cooperate, mark sandy of the office of management and budget appeared saturday under subpoena. seecil n political appointee, answering questions about the administrations decision to briefly withhold 400 million in military aid to ukraine. Democrats are trying to prove the president froze the money to pressure ukraine to investigate his political rivals. The Committee Also released transcripts of two other witnesses, one of them jennifer williams, is a staff member of Vice President mike pence. She was on the july 25th call in which trump repeatedly brought up investigating the bidens and the 2016 election. She testified she found the mention of those investigations unusual and inappropriate. She also told the committee she noted down a specific name that came up. Burisma, thats the Ukrainian Energy company where hunter biden served on the board while his father, Vice President biden, was the obama administrations point person on ukraine. Biden and his son are stonecold crooked. Reporter but the summary of the call released by the white house, the centerpiece to trumps defense all that matters is the transcript. The transcript is perfect. Reporter makes no mention at all of burisma. Williams is the second person to testify about the omission. Lieutenant colonel Alexander Vindman of the National Security council who was also on the call also noted it down. Another transcript released saturday was of Tim Morrisons testimony. Hes a former nsc staffer who described a shadow Foreign Policy serves the president s interests. Quote, there was the normal process where decisionmaking went through the duly appointed personnel, and there was this second tract chiefly led by Ambassador Gordon Sondland where Rudy Giulianis name would come up. Morrison testified sondland told them he was not going rogue. Quote, he related to me he was acting, he was discussing these matters with the president. All of this raises questions for sondland who has been back already to revise his testimony. Williams, vindman and morrison are all set to appear tuesday. Sondland is back in an open session on wednesday. Dan . As we said, another big week. David wright at the white house. Thank you. Lets bring in our chief anchor George Stephanopoulos. Good morning. Good morning. As david said, we have another set of big witnesses this week including Gordon Sondland. What are you looking for . Well, how is Gordon Sondland going to revise his testimony . After what weve seen this weekend david holmes the embassy aid who was at lunch with Gordon Sondland says he was talking to the president about biden investigations. You heard the testimony from tim morrison right there talking about at least five phone calls between the president and sondland about the investigations, about the military aid, clearly saying that ambassador sondland was being directed by the president. That calls into question first of all, it ties President Trump more directly into all this. Number two, it calls into question ambassador sondlands testimony. One of the things he said was he never thought these investigations were about the bidens. Clearly contradicted right there. One of the questions going forward, did he perjure himself . How is he going to revise his testimony . Speaking of the bidens, another thing we saw in davids piece is that theres new testimony the white house may have left the word burisma out of its reconstruction of that now famous phone call between the president and the president of ukraine. Maybe President Trump was asking specifically about investigating the bidens. Whats your take . Thats the testimony of colonel vindman and jennifer morrison. Remember at the yovanovitch hearing on friday, right before the hearing, the president released the transcript of the first the rough transcript of the first phone call with president zelensky which had no mention at all of corruption, even though the official white house readout said the president brought up corruption. There does appear to be a fair amount of covering up, changing of the stories of what was actually happening on these phone calls with the president , and now you have got two new pieces of testimony that say that, in fact, burisma, the bidens, was discussed on these phone calls. Again, it ties the president , again, much more closely to the whole effort investigating the bidens withholding a white house meeting and military aid until those investigations were announced by the ukrainians. I want to sneak in a question about the democrats running for question. We have this cnn poll showing that mayor Pete Buttigieg is pulling ahead in iowa by about 10 points. Rocketed ahead. Not only the cnn poll, the Des Moines Register poll, this is big news. Pete buttigieg, centrist democrat, mayor of south bend, indiana, huge ground operation in iowa. Hes rocketed to the top of the pack. We have a few months to go until the vote. A lot can change until then. This is significant news for Pete Buttigieg. Watch for him to be a target at the next democratic debate. Yes. George, love seeing you on sunday mornings. Thank you. Thank you. I want to remind everybody george has a big show. Hes going to talk impeachment with two members of the intelligence committee, Patrick Maloney and chris stewart. Thats all coming up on this week on abc. Whit, over to you. Dan, thanks. Sticking with politics for a moment, a huge loss for President Trump and republicans in louisiana as democratic Governor John Bel Edwards narrowly wins a second term there. The moderate leader remains the deep souths only democratic governor winning with 51 of the vote. President trump spoke at three rallies for the republican calling on voters to send democrats in washington a message. President trump took advantage of what he called a free weekend to go ahead and get a start on his annual physical. The president spent about two hours at Walter Reed National military Medical Center taking various tests, including lab work on saturday. The appointment was not on trumps schedule unlike his previous checkups. The white house spokesperson says the 73yearold president remains, quote, healthy and energetic. Turning to the mysterious death of a Cornell College student found dead after a Fraternity Party with his mother and father in town for parents weekend. Theyre demanding answers and offering a reward for information. Trevor ault is here with more. Trevor, good morning. Reporter whit, good morning. Antonio tsialas was at his dream school. His parents know before his death he attended that frat party, and they dont know what killed him, and there is concern that this is part of a growing trend with fraternities across america. This morning, a desperate search for answers for the family of this 18yearold ivy league student. There are people that know what happened and nothing is being said. Reporter Antonio Tsialas was a freshman at Cornell University and a goalie on the soccer team. His parents say two weeks ago after having dinner with them he attended an offcampus frat party and never made it back to his dorm. His body later discovered at the bottom of a gorge. Theyre offering 10,000 for information from anyone who was at that party. We have to really take a closer look at these organizations, their practices, their behaviors of some of the members. Reporter in a statement, cornells president says, University Officials still dont know antonios cause of death, but she called the party an unregistered fraternitysponsored event where alcohol was served and says the events regrettably follow a pattern of misconduct in the greek letter system. The university has since banned fraternity and social events for the rest of the semester. That decision as fraternities across america are under scrutiny. In the past month there have been five reported deaths involving College Fraternities including three in three days earlier this week. While antonios parents dont know what killed their son, their lawyer says the fraternity shoulders much of the blame. They broke every rule in the book. Had they not illegally served alcohol you can be sure that antonio will be here today. Reporter the fraternity tells abc news they extend their deepest condolences to the tsialas family. They say their members are working with police in the investigation. University police say theyve issued subpoenas and got search warrants. Theyll turn over that evidence to state investigators. Cant get over the fact that the parents were there. Waiting to meet with him. There have been so many high profile cases. It just keeps happening. Very sad. Reporter yeah, so eva, this is a major headline in the world of cardiology coming out of their world clinical meeting going on in philadelphia. In this study, they looked at very high risk patients, those with moderate to severe coronary Artery Disease who were not having chest pain. Then they divided them. They randomized them. One group got stents or surgery plus medication and lifestyle modification. The other group, just medication and lifestyle modification, and what they found is that medication and behavioral change now i nt tbeal clear. The problem was the fact that, once he had been convicted you stayed with him. I stayed with him.
