November is National Homeless youth awareness month. A statistic show that nearly a quarter of the Homeless People in the county are actually College Students. Chris reyes spoke with different agencies banding together now to house 100 students in 100 days. I have very sad memories of saying hello to people just to hear a hello back and nobody would say hello. This 22yearold was homeless in san jose two years ago. Today is a student standing on his own two feet and he is helping to accomplish a big goal. House 100 College Students in one day. No child, no young student should live on a car, on someones couch or under an overpass, especially while they are working towards beginning their dreams. Here is one of the many places that elijah called home in san jose. It is a reality he never wants to relive. He doesnt want other young people to go through what he did. Through sheer determination, he got himself out of homelessness, but the struggle is real. Right now hes paying more than 2,000 a month for rent, holding down two jobs while going to college. The 100 day challenge aims to find other struggling students, connect them with resources, track their progress and make sure they dont fall through the cracks. When we bring all those people together, our hope is it becomes a learning collaborative where after 100 days we have a system of care for all our colleges to assure that nobody is homeless while attending school. In the meantime, though, police here are being very tight lipped about any progress, if any, they have made in this investigation. Investigators towed away a black Dodge Challenger from the home where five people were shot and killed here during a house party on halloween night. In a meantime, a memorial to those who died at the party is growing. Theyre somebodys kids and parents and it is a horrible tragedy and i felt like we should show our support. I just was deeply moved by the death of five young people whose lives were cut way short. Reporter the shootings occurred during what was billed as an airbnb mansion party. A house used exclusively as a shortterm rental. It is a home thats had problems before with large parties. So much so that the owners received several notices of violation. You have to wrestle with what you do about people that dont follow the rules. Reporter there is an existing ordinance that prohibits gathering of more than 13 people at shortterm rentals. But the city manager said he will look at tighter restrictions tuesday night. Is there a scenario where they could ban shortterm rentals, period . Well, thats one of the things the council will talk about. There is some challenges with that that are legal. But if thats the direction they want to go, you know, thats what well work on. Today we did get a little bit more information. Apparently the police, as part of mutual aid, were actually dispatched to oakland. There had been a Home Invasion at about 8 30 on halloween night. The Police Officers, and there is usually only two of them on duty, were sent to oakland to try to investigate a stolen car related to that Home Invasion. The calls about the party, the loud party, starting coming in about 9 20. An hour and a half later is when that shooting started. It is not clear if that would have prevented the officers from checking out the noise complaints sooner before the shooting started at that house. All right. Reporting live for us tonight. Thank you, laura. We are getting new information on the weekend escape of two murder suspects from the monterrey county jail. The Sheriffs Office released these photos of a bathroom where the inmates crawled through. It was just 22 inches wide. From there, the two made their way through a tiny crawl space, the out of a hatch into an area thats under construction where there was no razor wire. Investigators are now trying to figure out who, if anyone, helped these two men. As far as help from inside from employees, absolutely not. As far as other inmates go, thats a big part of the investigation that were still working through. They are both were awaiting trial on separate murder cases, as well as other felonies. Authorities say both men should be considered armed and dangerous and you should not approach them if you see them. A federal judge is demanding answers from pg e about its equipment. He gave them 15 days to answer questions about their equipment. A jumper cable broke where the kinkaid fire started last month. The cause of that fire has yet to officially be determined. Its been about ten days since the kinkaid fire started. At one time around 180,000 people were told they needed to evacuate. Firefighters are making considerable headway with the fire containment thats now at 80 . It remains the largest active wild fire in the state, scorching close to 78,000 acres. The flames have wiped out hundreds of structures, including 174 homes. Wayne freedman explains frustration is mounting with the victims. Two weeks later still nothing. So now it is basically a month of waiting. I call again. Hes assured once again that he will receive his banner.
