We have learned that a pg e transmission line failed at about the same time that fire started. Mandatory evacuations are in effect east of highway 128 to geyserville. The Healdsburg Community center, Sonoma County fairgrounds and the sonoma Veterans Memorial building are being used as Evacuation Centers. It is really a race against time to get this fire under control before more high winds come in this weekend. Amy hollyfield has more on the situation on hand. Looking behind you, the devastation is hard to at this fire has done. Ng to see about a half dozen homes on this street were destroyed they are getting a break in the weather today. Thats a bit of good news. Its not windy now, that should help in the firefight but theres a lot of smoke lingering in this area. We do want to point out Evacuation Orders are still in place. There were rumors going around yesterday that those were lifted. They have not. This fire spread so quickly down the mountain and into alexander valley. They say it grew about a thousand acres an hour. They will send more firefighters to the scene today. Theyre worried about the fire burning now but also very focused on this weekend and the next wind event that is expected here. We are up against the clock not only with the continually drying fuel, but the winds predicted over the next couple of days are expected to be worse than we had the other night. River rock casino is part of the evacuation area. The casino was not damaged in the fire, but the fire did come very close to the building. No one has been hurt in this fire. More than 120,000 Contra Costa County residents could be impacted by the shutoffs that start tomorrow night. The list includes walnut creek, moraga, orinda, and lafayette. The likely outages are because of extreme fire conditions were expected to experience this we do think it will be the strongest offshore wind event this season by a large margin. If models are correct, possibly the strongest offshore winds weve seen in years. In Alameda County 57,000 pg e customers could lose power as well. Now, if you still need a way to get around, b. A. R. T. Will still be up and running. They run on their own power supplies. So theyll still be on during an outage. These possible outages could start tomorrow at 10 00 p. M. And last until 2 00 p. M. For many its a chilling rminder of the north bay fires two years ago. The kincaid fire forced the evacuation of 2,000 people. The Sheriffs Office wants to acknowledge this is an emotional time for many people. Its only two years since the fres that devastated our community. Theres still a lot of trauma in Sonoma County from the fires of two years ago, waking up to a day like today brings back memories. Hundreds of firefighters from throughout northern a clos look have come in to help. The goal now is to get it contained before higher winds are expected this weekend. Heavy smoke from the fires is expected to drift into the bay area today. Even if you cant see it, it doesnt mean its not a health hazard. You can see that thin line of flames from the fire lining the ridgetop from Late Wednesday night. A reminder here are the areas under mandatory Evacuation Order because of the kincaid fire. The entire town of geyserville and areas east past highway 128 into Black Mountain and mercuriville. Closed roads are cloverdale, geysers, red winery, alexander valley, moody lane and pine flat. There are three open Evacuation Centers right now. One at the Sonoma County fair grounds in santa rosa, thats available for you and your large animals. A second is across the street at the Veterans Memorial building. This is where you can take small animals and pets. The third is Healdsburg Community center. Evacuees have taken their livestock with them to the Sonoma County fair grounds. About 45 animals have been brought to the fairgrounds so far. Including this pig, matilda. Matilda was then picked up by her owners and moved to a different location. The site is base camp for cal fire and sonoma sheriffs to work together. The fair grounds are for large animals only. So we dont have much time until we get more wind that will bring down that relative humidity and also dry out things even though were cooling temperatures off. Schools and colleges in the area are closed this morning because of the fire danger. And like here in the bay area, air quality is also a big concern right now. Hard to watch those flames grow. Crews are battling a winddriven wildfire that erupted along highway 18 in San Bernardino. It prompted mandatory and voluntary evacuations of 100 homes. So far no structures have been destroyed. The old water fire burned 75 acres and it is 30 contained. An emergency power shutoff is in effect in six Southern California counties. Nothing like what weve seen in the north part of the state. Southern california edison shut off power to 19,000 customers in riverside, los angeles, San Bernardino and ventura due to strong winds. The utility is monitoring 260,000 others for consider for shutoff. 49,000 are being considered to have power shutoff. Republican researchers at the Fire Weather Research lab just returned from Sonoma County after getting rare access to the front lines of the kincaid fire. Using state of the art technology, the professor says the Data Collected will be useful in the long run. This helps us better understand future fires and changing climate with the more extreme conditions we need to understand the extreme fire behavior. Theres no way do it except probing inside the fire. Clements says that modeling tools and observations with wind profilers could limit power shutoffs in the future. Theyre still trying to make progress and try doing this knowing more winds are on the way. It is really a race against time. It is. They have about a day out there. We have that light offshore flow allowing for not only dry air but look at this temperature now. Were looking at numbers with the east wind at 19 Miles Per Hour. Relative humidity is at 19 . Computer doesnt want to work. I can tell you the story is the winds will switch to an onshore component. Once that happens we get more smoke in the bay area and well be looking at that poor air quality throughout the rest of the day. This morning around 7 00 we are expecting cal fire to update us on the kincaid fire in Sonoma County. The firefight forced thousands to leave their homes and destroyed other homes. That fire spread to 16,000 acres. Fire crews are working to get a handle on the fire before the wind picks up this weekend. Cal fire says 49 homes are been destroyed. More homes and other buildings are been threatened. The fire is 5 contained. Weve also learned that a pg e transmission line failed around the same time the fire started. Mandatory evacuations are in effect east of highway 128 to geyserville. It is a race against time to get the fire under control before more strong winds come this weekend. No wind means it will linger here for a while. So its difficult to breathe in this area. Firefighters are out watching for hot spots. This fire burned 16,000 acres. Thats the latest figure we have. Officials have Evacuation Orders in place. They have Police Officers out watching for any issues. They say so far theres no reports of looting. We have over 50 deputies on duty right now. Over night well have 26 deputies protecting neighborhoods that have been evacuated and directing folks on how to evacuate. Reporter this windwhipped fire spread so quickly. It grew about 1,000 acres an hour. Not surprised to hear that. We were watching it expde down the mountain, down to the valley floor. Winds today have died down but theyre all focused on this weekend. Very worried about it. Very worried about what could kick up here at the kincaid fire. Right now about 2,000 people have been evacuated and are still evacuated. That has not been lifted. No word on when they will let everyone return home. Some are waking up at the Healdsburg Community center, which is one of two places where people could go. Best of a bad situation riding their bikes in the parking lot. One red cross volunteer was just waiting for news and hoping for the best. Im just praying our house is still there when we go back. We dont know right now. It was very close. The center was running smoothly offering free coffee and supplies and toiletries. Yesterday the center reached capacity but now there are openings. This morning were also seeing some devastation left behind by the kincaid fire. Abc News Reporter will reeve filed this brandnew report in the last hour. Reporter this burned down structure is one of 49 reported destroyed by the kincaid fire so far as it burns 16,000 acres and counting in Sonoma County. Just 5 contained. We thought we were going to lose our power up until 2 30 yesterday and then we received an email and text alert that we would not lose power. Five miles down the road they lost power. Doesnt seem to hyme o reason to it. Places that are one street away didnt lose it. Some people lost it. Alices restaurant in woodside opened help people charp phon and laptops again. Pg e has not said when power will fully be back on in San Mateo County. Governor newsom has harsh words for pg e. He was in Southern California where some utilities will be undergoing their own power shutoffs. Newsom promises to restructure the company once they emerge from bankruptcy. We will hold the ious and utilities accountable. We will make sure people are compensated for this. We will do everything in our power to negate the need to do this moving forward. The governor is demanding pg e put more investment into Vegetation Management and burying lines. Back out live nowsky7 which is over the kincaid fire. Its still burning there. You can see those hot spots in Sonoma County closeo geyserville. I think we have sky map 7 to give us a better idea of where the fire is burning. This is big geysers road. It looks like the majority of the flames are there. The a far cry from what we were seeing yesterday when that fire was racing out of control. We know firefighters still have a lot of work to do. They told us earlier its only 5 contained. Theyre working to get this fire under control before we get more winds coming this weekend. In addition, the rough and rocky terrain is making things challenging for firefighters right now. They are having a hard time fighting this firerom t ground. Instead they are choosing to use air drops. We have seen that in theast couple of days, once again things look much better from this Vantage Point compared to one day ago. Were just going to zoom out and ill show you the distance between geyser road and the fire head there. Seems to be about a mile and a half from geysers road. Theres different parts of the fire out here. Ill pan over, you can see all the smoke. The smoke is laying down right now because its kind of cool outside. We are trying to show you what we can through the smoke. But the fire is making progress. And hopefully the conditions will keep it from advancing later on today. Mike, i know its really dark out there and smoky. Can you able to see anything else . Any fire crews out there doing anything . Are you just or just not from your Vantage Point . We have not seen lights from fire rigs. There could be ground crews down there doing hand work. But we dont physically see that with our eyeballs. I dont think its widespread this morning. Pg e did confirm that there was an issue with its transmission line in the geyserville area which was not deenergizeded. From sky 7 you can see the network of buildings, power lines and geothermal pipelines that run across the area. Cal fire investigators are now on the scene looking for evidence in an area identified as kincaid road and the now aptly named Burned Mountain road. Close attention is paid to those power lines. Calpine who owns the geysers power plant provided a statement saying in part consistent with our Fire Prevention protocols, due to the wind conditions we had deenergizeded our local power line system before the fire started.
