Midnight tonight, lower elevations looking at 35 to 36mileanhour wins, picking up to 37 in the wee hours of the morning. 41 miles an hour at calistoga at 7 00 a. M. Fire danger elevated. Red flag warning going for the north and east bay through 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Then for the Santa Cruz Mountains until noon. Its a combination of the gusty winds up to 65 miles an hour and Even Stronger and low humidity. The hills are under a wind advisory until 3 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Reporter well, ama, dan, were here on mount diablo boulevard. Ive been looking over my shoulder all night to wait and see if those whole foods lights go out. They could go out any minute since pg e told us about 20 minutes ago they had begun those phase two shutoffs in the east bay. We know theyve egun in Alameda County and could start any minute here in contra costa. Rushing to take advantage of lastminute electrical luxuries in the east bay wednesday night. At whole foods in lafayette, workers stayed late to transfer refrigerated inventory to freezer trucks in their parking lot. Every light bulb a glowing reminder. We stopped taking reservations because of the outage. Reporter the marriott is ba backed up with portable generators. We sourced as many flashlights and glow sticks as we possiblypr that californians know dangerous fire weather is behind the planned outage. Im really glad we at least know what the reason is because every once in a while a planned power outage will take place back home in trinidad and we have no idea why its happening. Reporter across the street, drivers pulled in to fuel up only to discover everyone else got there first. Sorry, no gas. There was some sympathy for the embattled utility. I honestly cant blame pg e for safety reasons. Reporter safety is top of mind for contra costa fire, which upped staffing and perfecperfect wildfirefighting equipment overnight. We have a lot of unburned fuel on the ground from the rains last winter and spring. With the high winds, thats the big problem tonight. The city of morgan hill will enforce a curfew if their power gets shut off. It was originally scheduled for 7 00 p. M. But is delayed until the power is shut off. This is the to reduce criminal activity. Pg e launched a new website a few hours ago after an earlier site kept crashing. The new site was designed to handle heavy traffic from people searching to see if their neighborhood and home would be affected by a power shutoff. Just a few minutes after pg e went live with the site, guess what . It crashed. Lets test it right now. You can get to the outage map via pg es home page, but it is not yet reflecting the outages in progress right now. So unfortunately for pg e, just when people have turned to them for information about outages around the bay area, both websites have had a difficult time functioning and giving people the information they need. Pg e gave an outage update earlier this evening, and the iteams dan noyes was there. We asked about pg es effort to improve the safety of overhead power lines. What steps are you taking to do that more quickly because clearly thats the key reason youre doing this because you cant trust your not necessar trust our own equipment. I keep coming back to the fact that its the coexistence of our equipment with the environment and the factor of safety that existed in the environment gnarl naturally when the systems were compromised does not exist anymore. Reporter pg e says it restored power today to 50,000 people in the sierra foothills by isolating transmission lines from lines that may face a high wildfire risk. Some residents in humboldt got a sliver of good news. Emergency services tweeted this around 7 00 tonight. Pg e is reporting that it has been given the all clear to immediately begin the process to restore power to the county. This does not mean electricity will be restored immediately, though. Plan for another night without power. Now, there is certainly a lot of worry and anxiety in the north bay understandably tonight where up to 200,000 people are in the dark, affected by the pg e power shutoff. Live pictures from sky7 over a neighborhood in oakland where the only lights you really see are the headlights from cars because most of the neighborhood is in the dark. About a half hour ago, pg e said a second round of shutoffs began in parts of the east bay, including areas of oakland and the south bay as well as santa cruz county. The process will take until about midnight for that second phase of the power shutoffs to completely be done. A lot of people find the current shutoffs reminiscent of the rolling blackouts californians experienced during the Energy Crisis in the early 2000s. We remember that well, righ w ud a recall campaign over the ordeal. He spoke with us on the phone today. Precautionary efforts that theyre taking to shut off power is one of the tools that they were given by statute, and the puc had to approve the plan before it could go into effect. The wind conditions are driving all of this in terms of the pg e shutoffs and as predicted by our weather team, the wind has been picking up all afternoon and evening. Lets get to meteorologist sandhya patel. Those wind speeds have really increased hour by hour tonight. I want to show you a live pictu picture. You can clearly see the wind is shaking this camera up. As we take a look at the wind gusts so far, mount saint held ena, 70 miles an hour. Mount diablo, 68. Rose peak, 47. Knoxville creek, 48. Mount tam hasnt been too bad so far, 30. Oakland hills, same thing, 28 miles an hour. Fairfield is reporting winds gusting to about 30 miles an hour. So not all lower elevations feeling that wind. Its the higher elevations. I want to show you the fire danger index as we head into tomorrow morning. This area in the north bay, oranges and reds indicating very high to extreme fire danger. That also includes parts of the east bay hills as you will notice going into 8 00 a. M. So around the time that youre commuting tomorrow morning, definitely be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant. Live doppler 7 obviously not showing us any rain. They start to increase. 37 miles an hour. Then 41 miles an hour at 7 00 a. M. So your commute may be a little tough, especially if youre driving.
