Perfect song working 9 to 5 and its great to have you with us on this tuesday morning. And it was a big night at the ballroom. Ray lewis. I know. Who could have seen this coming, that surprising exit after an injury. All the details coming up later. The impeachment net is getting wider. Secretary of state mike pompeo was on that president s phone call with ukraine. The house has given him a friday deadline to turn over documents. The president s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is facing a new subpoena and impeachment inquiry and attorney general william barr has traveled overseas to ask foreign governments about the investigation and all this as President Trump is targeting his accusers hoping to reveal the whistleblowers identity. Our senior Congressional Correspondent mary bruce starts us off. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, robin. This impeachment inquiry has only been under way for a week but swiftly gaining momentum and rests closest allies and new questions about whether the president hey have used his office for political gain. This morning, the pressure is heating up on President Trumps inner circle. Abc news has learned that trumps secretary of state, mike pompeo, was listening in on that july phone call between trump and the ukrainian president. The call at the center of the impeachment inquiry. The revelation comes after pompeo told our Martha Raddatz he didnt know about the whistleblower report of that call. And i want to turn to this whistleblower complaint, mr. Secretary. The complaint involving the president and a phone call with the foreign leader to the director of National Intelligence inspector general. What do you know about those conversations . So, you just gave me a report about a whistleblower complaint, none of which ive seen. Reporter congressional investigators have already subpoenaed pompeo for documents amid questions about the state departments role and whether the agency gave instructions to the president s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. To the best of my knowledge and from what ive seen so far, each of the actions that were undertaken by state Department Officials was entirely appropriate. Reporter democrats also issuing a subpoena monday to giuliani seeking documents about his efforts to push ukraine to investigate trumps political rivals. Overnight, giuliani not sure if hell comply. I dont know. Im weighing the alternatives. Ill kind of like go through it. Ill get all my evidence together, get my charts. Reporter while the impeachment inquiry is squarely focused on trumps call to the president of ukraine, this morning, there are new questions about whether the president is using his office for personal political gain in other instances too. Abc news confirming the president recently asked the australian Prime Minister to help his attorney general bill barr dig into the origins of the Mueller Investigation which trump has long claimed was a political hit job. A theory widely debunked by the u. S. Intelligence community. In a statement the white house said the doj simply requested that the president provide introductions to facility state that ongoing inquiry and he did so, thats all. And weve learned barr himself was in italy just last week meeting with senior officials there. That trip also part of the justice departments Ongoing Investigation of the Mueller Probe. Democrats are not happy about it. The attorney general really is functioning more as the president s personal attorney than as the chief Law Enforcement officer of the United States. Reporter now, as democrats ramp up their investigation, the president is ramping up his attacks against the whistleblower. Trump says he deserves to meet his accuser but the whistleblowers Attorney Says that his client is entitled to anonymity and that retaliating against this person would be a violation of federal law. George. Okay, mary, thanks. Public opinion is key to any impeachment showdown and new polls indicate an increase in support for impeachment. In the first full poll since Speaker Pelosi announced a formal investigation, quinnipiac shows a 10 gain in removing the president from the office. The public split down the middle. A majority 52 support supporting the impeachment inquiry. Mary said targeting the whistleblower. Were trying to find out about a whistleblower. When you have a whistleblower that reports things that were incorrect as you know anyouve probably now have figured it out, the statement i made to the president of ukraine, a good man, a nice man, knew, was perfect and its a disgrace. This whole thing is a disgrace. Theres been tremendous corruption. So lets analyze all this with our chief White House Correspondent jon karl and chief legal analyst dan abrams and jon, in the intro right there, the president is front and center on this. He is his defense team. Reporter its clear, george, that the president is directing the response to all of this himself. Both through his tweeting, some 30 tweets over the weekend, but in tmsf is attack the whistleblower, it has been relentless. Of course, it is started by suggesting that the whistleblower or those who talked to the whistleblower are essentially spies and the punishment for spying used to be death and now demanding to know to out the whistleblower. His own aides have called the whistleblower part of a deep state conspiracy. George, this could well be a violation of federal whistleblower Protection Laws and is also the kind of thing that could end up being one of the articles of impeachment against the president intimidating the whistleblower. The more he tries to target him. Lets bring in dan abrams for more on this right now. We just saw Rudy Giuliani get a subpoena as well, of course, hes the president s personal attorney. He says hes deliberating whether or not hes going to comply with the subpoena but does he really have a choice . No. I mean, his arguments are likely to be very weak. First of all, to get Attorney Client privilege you have to be serving as the attorney. So, Rudy Giuliani has said i wasnt acting as a lawyer. I was acting as a straight and out if thats the case, theres no Attorney Client, period. He could argue, you know what, there are instances where i was acting as his attorney, okay. Fair enough, youve got a problem, a, that congress can typically compel even Attorney Client protected privilege, b, youve got the possibility of whats called waiver, meaning, when hes out there talking about it publicly, there is no more Attorney Client privilege. The whole point of the Attorney Client privilege is to say, we can have a private conversation. We can talk about these things. If Rudy Giuliani has been out talking about those conversations, that would also be if he doesnt comply that could become an article of impeachment. Meantime, we have this extraordinary situation where the attorney general is out traveling overseas trying to enlist foreign nations in this investigation of the russia investigation. Right, and what we thought was happening was that this respected former federal prosecutor john durham was doing his own investigation and the sense was, all right, theres a level of independence to this. Its being handed off to durham, hes going to be investigated. If barr himself is o actually interviewing witnesses and talking to people, then durham isnt really doing the investigation. Barrs doing the investigation. Thats certainly running the risk of giving the impression that this is an investigation for the president to retaliate against Robert Mueller as opposed to an independent one. Meantime, jon, any sense the white house is developing a more comprehensive coordinated strategy . Reporter it doesnt really look that way, george. In fact, one indicator of this, as late as yesterday, White House Legal Team was still trying to get a definitive answer as to whether or not secretary of state mike pompeo was on the president s call with president zelensky of ukraine. Of course, it turns out he was but they didnt know that for sure until yesterday. And, of course, he could have just told them. Jon karl, dan abrams, thanks very much. We go overseas to the showdown on the streets of hong kong. Some of the biggest prodemocracy protests yet are spreading through the city and new reports this morning one of the protesters was shot. Ian pannell is live on the scene with the latest. Good morning, ian. Reporter yeah, good morning, michael. Because of the violence on the national holiday, things are much quieter. Today, we saw largescale protests that lapsed into violence. The police came out in force. They were firing rubber bullets and teargas. Some of the crowd responded with molotov cocktails and also bricks. In one particular incident, police have confirmed a young man, 18yearold, was shot at close range. The officer said he feared for his life. Many protesters there will dispute that. The protests coincided with the 70th anniversary of the founding of beijing. Weve seen tanks, fighter jets and missiles which apparently can avoid u. S. Defenses and president xi wanted it to be a show of case of chinese power and protesters wanted to divert attention here of whats happening here and in some sense they succeeded. That terrifying bridge collapse in taiwan. Take a look at this video showing the moment that bridge crumbles. Sending an oil tanker slamming into boats below. Lama hasan has more details. Good morning, lama. Reporter and good morning to you, robin. Yes, exactly. That frightening moment caught on camera showing the 60foot steel arch bridge collapsing and crashing onto the boats below in the water trapping people on board. A terrifying bridge collapse, watch as this Oil Tanker Truck makes its way across the bridge when it suddenly gives way. Sending the truck plunging onto two boats below leaving six people trapped in the rubble and sending more than a dozen more into the water. Rescue workers leapt into action scouring the wreckage for victims. Rushing at least ten people to the hospital. Six of them with serious injuries. Officials dont yet know the cause of the collapse, but hours earlier, this crowded seaport on the north end of the island was rocked by a typhoon. Well, its not clear if the typhoon which brought strong winds and rain weakened the bridge which was built in 1998, but in previous years maintenance consultants had found that some of the cables had rusted and parts of the bridge had been damaged which, george, of course, investigators will now be taking a look at. That was such a scary moment. Thanks very much. Were going to move on now to that rough weather hitting the center of the country. The system that dumped that september snow on montana is moving east bringing heavy rain and flash floods to the midwest and ginger has the latest. Good morning, ginger. Good morning, george. Weve already seen the front squeeze out too much water too fast. Look at these images from duluth, minnesota, 5 1 2 inches of rain. People being pulled out. Their cars underwater and now weve got more of this to look for. This river near duluth is close to its highest levels. So were going be watching that. Watch all the states included, michigan back through wisconsin to new mexico, which today going to see the impacts from the flash flood threat. That low pressure system squeezing the deep tropical moisture thats riding along the ridge giving so many folks record highs could produce more than 4 inches of rain, george. Thanks very much. And coming up in our next hour, we have a live demonstration showing what to do if your car ever gets trapped in a flash flood. Michael. Now to a u. S. Citizen facing charges accused of being a covert agent passing classified information to china. Prosecutors say they have video of him conducting dead drops which is the kind of thing you see in spy movies. Chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas has the details. Reporter this morning, an american citizen is in custody accused of being a covert agent for the chinese. The fbi says 56yearold edward peng living in california has been using secret dead drop locations to collect classified National Security information for delivery to his bosses in beijing. The charges unsealed today provide a rare glimpse into the efforts of the prc to obtain classified National Security information of the United States. Reporter one of those dead drop locations investigators say is this Georgia Hotel room captured by the fbis super secret surveillance cameras. What peng doesnt know according to authorities is that hes been set up by a double agent working for the u. S. Government. Watch closely, the fbi says peng is taping a white envelope containing a 20,000 payoff in the top drawer of that tv stand. The double agent would remove, would retrieve the key, retrieve the cash and tape the sd card to the same place where the money had been left. Reporter peng later returns to pick up the sd card containing classified information for delivery, authorities say, to beijing. According to the charges peng has been working for the Chinese Government since at least 2015. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. Michael. All right, thank you so much, pierre. Robin. Now to an important day in court for the former Dallas Police officer who shot and killed her neighbor saying she mistakenly entered the wrong apartment. Jury deliberations are now under way. Marcus moore has the latest from dallas. That defendant making unreasonable decisions that put her in that seat. Reporter this morning, the fate of amber guyger hanging in the balance as 12 jurors in the back room wrestle with a monumental decision. He is shot dead in his own home by her. Reporter at times on the stand the 31yearold overwhelmed with emotion recalling what transpired more than a year ago. I wish he was the one with the gun and killed me. I never wanted to take an innocent persons life. Reporter this dramatic body camera capturing the moments after guyger claims she mistakenly walked into botham jeans apartment shooting and killing the 26yearold claiming she feared for her life. He was yelling, hey, hey, hey and i yelled at him, let me see your hands. Let me see your hands. None of them heard you say that. I cant tell you why. Its because you didnt say it. Did you properly perform cpr on mr. Jean . No, i did not. You could have, right . I tried to do a little cpr. Reporter the defense arguing guyger had a split second to react like any reasonable person would, but her decision ended tragically. Her attorney urging jurors to remove emotion from their lifechanging decision. You dont as the jurors in this case decide the case on emotion and sympathy. You can hate her but you cant convict her because thats no evidence as to the decisions that were made in that apartment. Reporter and the defense has cited the castle doctrine, which is a Legal Protection for selfdefense inside your home but prosecutors say it does not apply in this case. That amber guyger was the intruder who walked into botham jeans apartment. Guys. All right, marcus, thanks so much. Were going to turn to that wild scene at ohare airport. Take a look at this. This is a Service Vehicle delivering beverages to an American Airlines plane but it went completely haywire started spinning in circles without a driver behind the wheel. Well, the coworkers, theyre sitting there trying to figure it out. Not sure how to stop it closing in on the jet when someone finally drives and comes in and knocks it on its side. There we go. Yes. A spokesman for American Airlines say they think the accelerator was something fell on the accelerator on the car and it just went out and kept spinning. I would not drink any carbonated beverages on that flight. [ laughter ] thats true. Good point. Following a lot of other stories this morning, including a major game changer for college sports. Californias governor signed a bill that would allow student athletes to make money off endorsement deals and hire agents. T. J. Holmes is here and this could really upend the business model. A College Athlete was once suspended for accepting a golf cart ride across campus. The person driving that golf cart happened to work for a sports agency. Another group of athletes were actually suspended for accepting among other things discounts on tattoos. Now, the ncaa is a 14 billion a year with a b. With a b. So it seems ridiculous and unfair that athletes cant accept the smallest of benefits. Well, rules are rule, right . California says law is law and you need to let these kids make some money. Weaving his way out across the 35 breaking a tackle. Reporter ncaa rules dont allow College Athletes to be paid. California law now does. Goes up after this ball. Reporter in defiance of the ncaa, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the fair pay for play act. The minute we sign this, all of a sudden now they have to deal with california. Reporter in a bill signing ceremony hosted by lebron james on his hbo show the shop. You know, i always tell you the reason part of the reason i went to the nba to get my mom out of the situation she was in. I couldnt have done that if i stepped on a college campus. Reporter james has been an outspoken supporter of the legislation which will allow athletes at california colleges to profit from their name, image and likeness, something strictly forbidden by current ncaa rules. This means california College Athletes could get shoe deals or other endorsements. They could get paid for signing autographs or memorabilia. They could hire agents and earn money from social media success. Something former ucla gymnast Katelyn Ohashi missed out on when video of her perfect 10 routine went viral. I had to go through a whole waiver process to try and get my poetry book for sale and it had nothing to do with the sport at all. I dont have a proleague to look forward to after, so this would have been helping my brand and continue to grow on after college. Reporter the ncaa admits improvement needs to happen but staunchly defends its amateur is a model saying in a statement, this new law already is creating confusion for current and future studentathletes, coaches administrators and campuses and not just in california. Key in all this, guys, is that this doesnt take effect until january 1 of 2023. Theyre essentially giving the ncaa time to get your act together. The ncaa has a committee set up thats expecting recommendations this month, in october, so we could see changes coming very, very soon. That would be big. Its a game changer. Redefine amateur athletics. It seems like you could come up with a way to give an appropriate stipend of some sort. Not saying they should be making millions and millions of dollars but like katelyn said a lot of people say, when they go pro, many of not all of them. They dont have a pro league and the vast majority dont go pro. I know on a full scholarship thank the good lord my mom and dad gave me 75 a moh and had to make that stretch because you are not able to as i College Athlete, you know this, youre not allowed to any other athlete or any other scholarship there on campus, you can do whatever you want, but as an athlete youre not able to for those reasons. Matt gutman is in maryland with a live demonstration. Good morning, matt. Hey, good morning, robin. So often we report about people being hurt or drowning in flash floods or major storms and our experts tell us that many of these incidents are survivable and so over the next few minutes im going to teach folks some very basic tips will how to get out of a situation like this alive. Now, one of the major things you need to know you can see those pumps right now in front of us dumping 200,000 gallons of water a minute into this dry riverbed and we are trying to simulate a real flash flood and the reason its so important to do this live is to show people at home that this can be done in realtime. Now, we have taken major safety precautions here at Adventure Sports center international. We have a team of rescuers standing by from rescue 3 international. You may be able to tell that weve chained the front of a car to this concrete and im wearing a life preserver as well underneath this shirt. Now, you could tell at this point we have three pumps going that the water is going pretty swiftly. Six inches of water can knock a person off their feet. Ill g in. L sweep your car away. You dont want to do this at home. A lot of people get into the situation, they dont have to. Were going to show you the worst that can happen in this video that youre about to see and also some basic safety tips and youre going to be able to see exactly what is happening in this car. The water welling up in this live box in the corner of your screen. Its scenes like these that make it so important to show you how to evade and escape your worst water nightmare. Weve got a baby. Call 911. Im banging on the roof yelling, screaming, please get my kids out of the back of the truck. Reporter everybody here made it out alive. Flash floods tossing cars like bath toys leaving rescue teams scrambling. In texas this summer, firefighters pumping their way through this car window to rescue a woman trapped inside and these new jersey newlyweds stuck in rising waters just moments after their ceremony. The car was flooding and we couldnt get out. Within four or five minutes it went from a puddle to a raging river. Reporter an average of 94 people in the u. S. Die every year in floodwaters. Nearly half of those deaths occur in vehicles likely trying to cross submerged roads. Thats not a river down there. That was once part of a highway. It can even happen in stagnant water. Experts say a flooded road may look passable on the surface but because of unseen dips, it could be deeper than expected. When water is covering the road you really cant tell the depth of the water until its too late. Reporter just two weeks ago, a man died after attempting to drive through this flooded texas parkway. Water there a deceiving eight feet deep. Some streets may look like theyre passable and ive seen firsthand that theyre not. Reporter it takes a mere six inches to knock a person off their feet and cars that can be suck into the tailpipe causing the engine to stall out. At jsut 12 inches that swift water will carry away most vehicles. I dont think people realize the power of the water. No vehicle is floodproof. Once the water gets halfway up the tires of a car, an suv or a fire truck, its prone to float and be swept away. Reporter one of the most important things to remember. If youre approaching a flooded roadway, remember, its not worth it. Turn around. Dont drown. Reporter you heard that turn around dont drown. Too often people realize that theyre getting inside a submerged road. They dont see how deep the water is. All right, so the key is getting out. One thing you dont want to do. Do not call 911. Do not get on your phone. Do that later. First thing, take your seat belt off. Next thing, roll down the window. A car battery should live for a minute or two during that situation. If you do need to break it and its not going down you can use a headrest. Always hit the corner. Next thing, seat belt, roll down the window as quickly as you can. Now you want to use anything you can to climb up to get on top of this roof. You can use the steering wheel, the visor, even the seat belt. Ill put my feet on the feet and climb out onto this roof. All right. Now youre going to want to ride this roof. If you do still have your phone on now is the time to call 911. Its a lot easier for rescuers to see you up top this beatup blue car than it is to see you in the water. Okay. This car is going to be careening down this river, its probably going to smash off at some point against a tree or an obstacle and there may be a point in which you feel you need to get off. You dont want to be in it or on top of it when it smashes against something. So what were going to do is defensive swimming. At some point im going to jump in the water and try to swim to a calmer looking part of the water or an eddy and thats where im going to try to get on shore and get out of this water. So defensive swimming, youre like a bug on their back. Youre going to keep your feet up in the air and use your legs as bumpers basically fendi off any obstacles in your way. When you do see that shallow spot where you think you want to get out of the water, thats when you swim like hell. Now, i may lose you. You may not be able to hear me but ill talk to you on the other side. Here we go. Also, try to belly flopin. All right, matt. Be careful. Matt is in the water and we have his rescue crew standing by. Mike burna is instructor trainer with rescue 3 international. Watching matt closely. Mike, we can see that matt is swimming using techniques you gave him. Walk us through what hes doing. Yeah, so, if your car becomes submerged, your life is going to be in peril. Right now matt is just doing everything he can to get out. So hes trying to find the calmest water possible and swim into that. It doesnt matter how you get out. You need to get to Higher Ground or a safer area immediately. Even if that means you just climb on and hold on to a tree until help comes. Oh, goodness. So you find that area which matt was able to do and then like you say you swim. So, matt, i know that you even with the preparation, what was it like being in the water having no control there for awhile . You saw my head got dunked underneath. Right. Its always startling when that happens. Also the water is always colder than you think its going to be. And so that can be startling but other than that, you know, once i found that sort of shallower calmer spot i just started to swim as fast as i could, robin. Our senior Congressional Correspondent mary bruce on capitol hill with the latest. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, george. The pressure is now building on President Trumps inner circle. Abc news has learned that secretary of state mike pompeo was listening in on that july phone call between the president and the ukrainian leader, that phone call now at the center of this impeachment inquiry. Now, the house has given pompeo until friday to turn over documents as they try to determine what role the state department may have played here while the president s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, he is also subpoenaed for documents related to his efforts to push ukraine to investigate trumps political rivals. This morning there are new questions about whether the president may have used his political power for personal gain. Abc news has confirmed that trump pressed the australian Prime Minister to help investigate the origins of the Mueller Probe including theories that have been widely debunked by the u. S. Intelligence community. As democrats are ramping up their investigation, the president is ramping up his attacks against the whistleblower. Its important to know that everybody is facing these scams now. In particular its happening more and more because of the fact that people are spending more and more time online. Three years down, 29 drop in death from Breast Cancer in the inhibitor group versus mr. Seen bow. In this stage 4 group they havent seen more than a 5 benefit in 25 years thats incredible. 29, take that, cancer. Absolutely. That is significant. Metastatic is no joke. All right. We often hear about our diet. How that can be helpful. What is new about that . Okay, so to eat or not to eat . That is the question. If youve had Breast Cancer and you fast 13 or more hours a day, youll have a 36 drop in recurrence relative to someone who eats more fasts less than that so the key seems to be lower insulin levels. A new study recently showed in a bunch of mice all obese all injected with Breast Cancer cells and all eating the exact same diet this group could only eat eight hours a day, this one partied 24 7. What they found is that the injected cells became tumors way less in the time restricted feeding group. So itserally science like in that bac the Physicians Committee for responsible medicine launching today the lets be breastcancer. Org campaign. This encouraging women to take a pledge to follow a fourpronged approach to beating Breast Cancer. You can drop it up to 80 by choosing a monthbased diet, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol, and watching your weight. Okay. I have to say, i love how you put the key to that. So, this textured implants have been recalled off the market so texture as opposed to smooth is leading to thankfully a very rare and low grade lymphoma so its very curable but it definitely is caused by these implants. Theyre thought that harbor bacteria and create inflammation between the implant and the capsule that forms around it forming a fluid with abnormal cells that are lymphoma. Luckily its very obvious. As soon as you realize it if caught early the complete cure is remove both. No chemo, no radiation, no death. If you have these seek a doctor if you notice a change. Your bottom line. Where are we . With these breaks and where are we going . I think were going to a place where we realize that only 5 to 10 of all Breast Cancer is genetic and have so much more control over this disease than provigil thought through diet and lifestyle interventions and for those affected with the disease were really getting good at more biological targeted industry and you can visit online video or in person in california to talk about what you can do to control this disease. Yes. I love hearing that. Thank you. [ applause ] dr. That is Deputy Eric Brunner from the Kent County Sheriffs Department and it was the Fourth Quarter assigned to the game to keep security. Everybody was under control. He said, you know what, i could pick up those st well take a look at the secrets of making good habits and breaking ones. Kayna whitworth sat down with the author of good habit, bad habits. Hey, kayna. So dr. Wendy wood said we should try to sync our habits and goals. During her three decades of research she found that 43 of what we do every single day is a habit so that means nearly half of our daily actions are not conscious choices. So she says we should train ourselves to automate Good Behavior and not rely on willpower to break bad habits. Eating better, exercising more, putting that phone down. Habitual behavior Many Americans are currently trying to change. Now, a new book from professor of psychology and business, dr. Wendy wood, good habits, bad habits she outlines the keys to creating good ha bill watt behavior. To create a good habit you feed to find something you enjoy and you have to do it repeatedly and most of us think we have to exert willpower. Its just not true. Reporter first how do you form a new habit . Think friction. If you want to break some habits you need to remove some friction, right . A bowl of peanuts is a good exam if theyre this close to you, youre likely to eat quite a few. That small distance adds friction. So you have to reach. And youre likely to eat about a third less thats so simple and its not that far. Second, rewards. What needs to happen for a habit to form is you have to feel some sort of enjoyment, appreciation. That forms that habit. And third deliberate repetition. For an act to become habitual we need to do it without thinking about it. Our best estimate at this point is it takes two to three months to create a new habit, even for something thats pretty simple. So not 21 days. Yeah, wouldnt it be lovely if it was 21 days . But what if your habit breaking involves stopping something that you enjoy. You need to find a substitute. Something else you do enjoy. So ultimately dr. Wood said we need to focus on our behavior and not the outcome, george. So you have to reduce this friction in order to encourage a good habit. One of t examples she talks about is living close to a gym. Yeah, george, so she says that if you travel five miles to the gym, youre likely to go only once a month but if you travel 3 1 2 miles, youre likely to go five times a month. I mean thats fascinating, george. Can you believe that such a small adjustment can make a big difference . Wow. That is really surprising. Good advice. Kayna whitworth, thanks very much. Good habits, bad habits is out today. Well be right back. Good morning, north bay. Get up and get going. This is abc7 mornings. Good morning. Im kumasi aaron from abc7 mornings. I was really honored to be a part of the psa from our Sister Network lifetime along with the stars of the movie patsy and loretta, megan and jesse. This is the 25th anniversary of lifetimes annual stop Breast Cancer for life. A commitment to supporting research which is always so very key and in case you havent noticed were going pink. Were going pink right here on gma raising awareness about Breast Cancer, celebrating fighters and thrivers here. You see them holding up their signs that shows the years they have been thriving. Six years. Six years. Yeah. For you. Yeah. You spent time with a very remarkable woman. This is a story of a woman celebrating her one year, janna geyer, she became her own advocate. She felt a lump and despite being told she was too young for a mammogram she followed her instincts and that saved her life. Most of janna geyers days are spent chasing her daughter ava. But in february 2018 her world came to a screeching halt. I was saying goodbye to my husband. When i put my arms out i noticed i felt something in my right breast and it happened to have been a lump. Reporter little did she know this would mark the start of her Breast Cancer journey at just 33 years old. I was the picture of health. I have no Family History. Im not a smoker and im not a drinker. So on paper you would definitely not think that someone like me would have Breast Cancer. Reporter janna says she went to the doctor that day for a breast exam who confirmed the palpable mass and said she needed an ultrasound and mammogram. When she called the hospital to make her appointment she said they told her she was too young for the mammogram. They said the ultrasound would suffice and the radiologist had told me based on the imaging we believe this is a fluidfilled benign breast cyst and it is quite large so we want you to keep an eye on it. Reporter relieved that it appeared to be benign she said she moved on and yet she still felt the lump. Says her doctors aspirated it twice and ran tests but other symptoms like redness and swelling started to appear. Seven months after she first found that lump she had the cyst surgically removed. Then she got a phone call. Ill never forgot that day, october 1st, 2018. The doctor told me, janna, the results came in and it is positive for Breast Cancer. Reporter she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma the most common form of Breast Cancer, and immediately began five months of chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy, a month of radiation and now hormone therapy. I definitely wonder if i would have had a mammogram would they have seen there was Something Else there . Reporter according to medal experts mammography screening below the recommended guideline of age 50 is a complex clinical decision due to potential high risks of false positives, overdiagnosis and possible unnecessary aggressive treatment that may not lower mortality. Now in recovery, janna says shes so grateful to be alive and is making her mess her message by starting the checkyourself movement encouraging women to be their own health advocates. There is nobody thats going to fight for you like you. And dr. Jen ashton is here and janna is here in our audience on her oneyear to the day thrive anniversary and i see the emotion flooding your face and we all know it too well. How are you feeling today . Congratulations. Thank you. I am feeling amazing. Being here today is such an honor. I followed both of your stories and it was so influential in my journey and i want to thank you for sharing it publicly and for women like me and women like me all over this world, thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. [ applause ] can you imagine you know, many of us have had a mammogram. Can you imagine doing it live on television . This woman did this. She did this. And everyone thought [ applause ] i know. And everybody thought, oh, its going its a gimmick. You are trying to do whatever. You discovered through that mammogram live on Television Later your doctor followed up with you. What advice first of all, how are you . First of all, im doing great because of you. You nudged me into that mammogram and i appreciate that and i was doing it for other women, never thinking, so this is my sixth year. Today i had the live mammogram. October 1, so we share that, right . But i dont i mean, you are i mean, i saw you were your own health advocate. Thats one piece of advice you gave me and its such a feeling of strength to give to other women to say, hey, you have to Say Something isnt right. Im not going to accept you telling me nothing is wrong and you have that fight in you and i hope that your story and i know it will inspire so many other women out there who just feel like something isnt right and their doctors are telling them youre too young. But as you say, age, theres no number. It doesnt discriminate. It doesnt care what you look like, age or anything like that. I like to say im the class of 2007 and the class of 2012 is how i phrase it. You obviously had your Breast Cancer journey. You shared it with the entire world and then you had this surprise five years later. Right. But i have to say we dont talk about post treatment, what happens, and i dont know about you, we talked about it and its really funny. We dont really talk about it that much. We dont. We did in the beginning but, you know, time moves on but we appreciate this opportunity to do it but i wish somebody had told me that i would go through depression after treatment. Thats right. No one ever tells you that. Youre so scared. Youre like, okay. Now what . Youve been watching me all this time. Now youre not watching me any longer. I remember someone telling me and i wish i could remember who the person was, youre going to wake up one morning and realize youve gone days without thinking about it. Then you told me that too. Right. You said i promise you there will be a day where you wont think about Breast Cancer. I know and i say that to everyone who is going through it. I know it doesnt seem that way now, but you do do that. Thats true. Dr. Jen, help us here. As we have have been talking about, bless your heart, you knew something wasnt right. How do we deal with these changes and recommendations and what to do and not to do . I think first of all you all have done so much as janna said to increase awareness, to give people home and inspiration but the world of cancer is not just about treating the cancer and then sending someone on their way. Its about treating the whole person, not a body part, and a big part of that is anticipating and helping with the emotional roller coaster that is absolutely not just common but normal afterwards. You both went through it. Im sure you did too, janna, and everyone here. I think its really important to use a community of support around that and then the controversy about screening is still there and i think thats because every time we hear new guidelines, listen for these words, for the average risk woman. Most women are average risk until the day they get that diagnosis. So its not one size fits all. Everything has to be individualized and there is a difference between sending someone for a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram. How would you encourage people to challenge their doctor . This is not a dictatorship. So ask questions. [ apause ] youre not insulting your doctor. I got chills when you said the average risk because as i said, i had zero Family History. Zero Family History so i was of average risk so just ask. You know, a Good Health Care provider, a good doctor will never be insulted by a question. I dont know if youre going do this on your five year. She climbed kilimanjaro. And noshworking on next month running a marathon. [ applause ] anything but average. I just feel like if i do have any advice for you, live, live like theres no tomorrow. I live like a Country Music song. [ applause ] thats how i live. I live like im dying. We are back now with former democratic president ial nominee, secretary of state, senator and first lady, Hillary Rodham clinton and her daughter, author and activist Chelsea Clinton, the two have coauthored a new book called the book of gutsy women highlighting women who inspired them throughout their lives. Welcome. Thank you for being with us. Thank you so much, amy. Were going to be talking about the book in just a moment but we obviously need to ask you about a couple of big headlines that have been in the news cycle here. First the launch of the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, of course. You witnessed firsthand two impeachments, one as part of the house judiciary staff and as first lady. I know youve said that you support impeachment but do you have concerns that the democrats may be overreaching on this . We dont have concerns about that because i think the evidence concerning ukraine is so dramatic and irrefutable because it came right out of the white house. So let the impeachment inquiry proceed. I know that they will do a thoughtful, thorough job. Nobody should jump to any conclusions. What do you think about President Trump calling for the accuser, for the whistleblower to be outed . I think thats really dangerous. From everything we know and we dont know much this is an experienced person who saw things that bothered him. Thats what the whole whistleblower statute is for and it is to protect their identity and i understand hes going to testify and well let the process unfold. How do you see it affecting the 2020 election . I dont know yet but i think there was no choice. Speaker pelosi was reluctant as we all know, but what i hope the democrats will do is not only proceed in a very deliberative way on the impeachment inquiry but tell the American People what theyve accomplished. They passed legislation on gun safety, improving health, lowering Prescription Drug costs, doing so many things that the American People really want and need, and it goes to the senate and dies, so i think the democrats have to go on two tracks here but they will do that. Your emails in the headlines once again with can you believe that . Here we go again. The administration is investigating dozens of current and former state Department Officials for what they sent you. Have you personally been questioned about this . No, and, look, i think its an unfortunate diversion. You go and you talk to people who have been experienced diplomats for many years and then you retroactively classify what they said ten years ago, i think its really a shame that theyre doing that and hopefully people will not be distracted. Well, heres todays headline. Your book is out. The book of gutsy women you coauthored with your daughter and highlighted over 100 women. How did you go about picking which women to highlight . Weve been talking about women who inspire us our whole lives together. I mean so many of my earliest memories are my mother talking about women who inspired her, some fictional like nancy drew and some very real like Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro so in many ways its a continuation of that conversation we started more than 30 years ago. I really want to highlight one of the women in the book today because you do such a great job here on Good Morning America highlighting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and betty ford, the former first lady, is in there because when i was a young girl, my mothers best friend who lived across the street got Breast Cancer, nobody would talk about it, amy. Nobody would say the words Breast Cancer. Nobody, and so i knew my mother was going over every afternoon to spend time with her. She eventually passed away. And it was not until betty ford courageously, with a lot of guts guts, not only had her mastectomy but had herself photographed in the hospital room with her husband, then president ford, by her side and went on to talk about it and i think i really believe saved so many lives. Oh, without a doubt. I mean, we have to talk about it. Awareness is key absolutely. To prevention and hopefully eventually treatment. I have to ask, i mean you guys look like you have an amazing relationship. What was it like though to work on a book with your mom . Youve each written six book, correct . Oh, goodness. Oh, so much fun. It was just such a joy. We laughed a lot. We laugh a lot as you can tell. And its just so much fun to continue to learn about my mom and to learn with her and to have created something together. Okay, true confessions. I really frustrated by daughter because i write in longhand and i always have when it comes to something long. For memos and notes and obviously other wow, theres an example right there that chelsea had to decipher and then i did. She would take pictures, amy, and then send them to me to prove she had made progress. I love it. But only excuse i have is that barack obama also writes in longhand so im in very good company. Can i ask whats the gutsiest thing youve ever done . Oh, boy, i think the gutsiest thing personally make the decision to stay in my marriage. Publicly, politically run for president and keep going. Just get up every day and keep going. I love it. Chelsea, how about you . Im so overwhelmed by my mothers answer that im a bit out of words. And im just so proud to be her daughter. But my most important entity is now as my three kids mom so ill just try to be gutsy every day, amy. Thank you both so much. The book of gutsy women is out today. They took 12. 8 billion from big tobacco. Juked mint, and menthol flavors, addicting kids to nicotine. Five million kids now using ecigarettes. The fda said juul ignored the law with Misleading Health claims. Now juul is pushing prop c, to overturn San Franciscos ecigarette protections. Say no to juul, no to big tobacco, no to prop c. The stlooifrs today. Thanks for watching. Good morning, bay area. Lets get up and get going. This is abc7 mornings. Im kumasi aaron. Meteorologist lisa argen is here with the forecast. Good morning, kumasi. Lots of sunshine and we need to warm up. 51 downtown, and a couple of degrees warmer for everyone. At the beach dropping down to 39 this morning, and so certainly cool, and 54 right now in concord, but the highs today coming up into the 70s in the inland valleys and slowly warmer throughout the week. Sue . It is a grind of a commute all morning and particularly into San Francisco and northbound 101. We had a car hit one of the sand barrels eastbound 880 getting on the lower deck of the bay bridge. One of the lanes is still blocked, and you are slow on 101 northbound through the peninsula. 280 is really, really slow as well and no great alternate for you unfortunately. Thank you, sue, for the update. It is time now for live with announcer its live with kelly and ryan today, Academy Awardwinning actor rami malek. At a performance from broadway, film, and Television Star kristin chenoweth. Plus, two more families compete as we continue to be 22s fantastic family faceoff week. Also, journalist and anchor Anderson Cooper joins kelly as a cohost desk. All next on live and now, here are kelly ripa and Anderson Cooper [cheers and applause]
