Paul blancos Good Car Company did not respond to our request for comment. Maybe you remember on friday we introduced you to a San Francisco man who supports his family on, get this, 65,000 a year. Alex rosier told us he spends nearly 30 of his earnings on Household Items and utilities, thats housing as well, and 3 on food. So we wanted to know are alex and his family doing it the right way . So joining us right now is Darlene Goins head of handson banking with wells fargo. Darlene, boy, this is a very aggressive spread sheet and budget that he has for his family. What were your first reactions . You know, alex is doing all the right things. Hes planning for shortterm savings, mediumterm savings like vacations, different clothing for his children, and longterm savings so hes really got it right when he says its about a mindset shift and thinking about whats important to you and your family. I thought that was really interesting for him to say because he was very methodical about the different time periods in his life. Yes. And he knows this is not going to be the case forever. Exactly. 65,000, no, its not a lot of money for San Francisco. Right. But he admits that he has some equity in the company that he works for, but its not guaranteed that equity could be in the millions of dollars. Is he doing it right to bank on perhaps being so frugal now in hopes that maybe something will pay off down the road . Absolutely. Its important to live within your means. And so i always recommend starting out by keeping a spending diary and tracking your spending over a month so that you can get an idea of what youre spending on and are they really needs or wants. Needs like your rent, your car payment if you need to have a car in order to get to work. You definitely need to focus on those. But look at your wants. Do you need to go out to din are or can you cook at home . That was one of the things alex mentioned. So i think its really important to think about how you can live within your takehome pay today and not necessarily bank on the future. I think youre right. In our story earlier last week, alex said that he only spends 250 a month on food for not only his wife but also for their small baby at home, so it can be done. It can be. One of the things also that i noticed in alexs spread sheet was that he gave up some of the Little Things and i think we find that to be the advice so oftentimes from financial planners. Do you have to go to starbucks . Is there some wiggle room . Can people have those little indulgences . What is your recommendation . Absolutely. You need to enjoy life. So think about your values. Think about money wasters, like ed more t one streang se cayou get n t wh theyre so convenient, though. Its better to put something in your shopping cart and think about do i really need this or do you want it . Its like those emails that you want to fire off but should hold off on. For alex, he budgets a percentage. Every month it goes toward so and so. Do you have a ballpark estimate how much people should be spending on food . Its challenging in the bay area because the cost of living is so high. Typically 15 to 20 but i dont know if thats realistic in the bay area. His story is at our a abc7news. Com. Thank you for coming in today, we greatly appreciate it. You guys look for solutions to some of the climate issues that were facing. What do you think, bruce, is the Biggest Issue we are facing in the bay area . Well, it depends on where you live in the bay area. Heat is a big issue and going to be a bigger one. We have more extremely hot days and thats a problem both for people in hotter parts of the bay area and people near the coast because people near the coast are generally not air conditioned, which is an easy way or easier way to deal with it. Of course if youre near an area that is fire risk, thats going to be your number one, as weve seen in the north bay and weve seen in the past in the east bay hills. Anyone living where theres a good chance and now a higher risk of these wildfires coming into a city, thats going to be their big problem. And of course longer term around the bay and on the coast, sea level rise. Extreme storms that go with that, flooding that will happen in many places around the bay, and on the coast. Lets talk about more about the wildfires because we are getting into this hot stretch. In the fall here in the bay area it tends to get hot. Along its coast those folks are expecting to cool off but arent prepared for the heat. What are you guys doing to identify solutions for protecting the public from these wildfires . We just did a big workshop and are coming out with a white paper on october 8th that looks at the Health Issues around wildfires. So for workers, for First Responders and for laborers who are coming in unprotected to do cleanup after fires, big Health Issues, breathing issues in particular. For folks who are living at some distance from fires, so here in the bay area central, look at the smoke issues that we had last year and the year before. So were working on solutions for do you send kids to school or is it better to keep them home if youre air conditioned or not. Should you wear a mask or not. Were working on those types of solutions which would be clear guidance to people as to what to do, Clear Communications on all of that. Were also looking at populations that are in high fire risk areas here in the bay area. What can we do to identify who are the most vulnerable populations that when we do have evacuations and big fires, will they be able to hear . Will there be language issues . Will there be mobility issues . We need to know who those people are ahead of time so they can get that extra work to protect themselves. E real well, its g harno hore greta we just heard. Shes fabulous and there are many others like her. Shes leading in many ways. Well see. Thats up to the older people who are in charge in these various countries and at the u. N. , but i think its going to be harder for them to ignore now the people who are clearly saying youre not going to be here, we are, its our future, let us be a part of that decisionmaking. We have about 30 seconds left. This may be a loaded question, but fetaors lifetime, will she see change, do you think . Its built in how much warming and how many more fires and things were going to have over the next few decades. The difference is which emissions path we take, a good one or not so good one. Second half of this century, that still is going to make the difference whether its a bad future or a really bad future. Oh, goodness. We hope its not really, really bad. Bruce, thank you so much for coming in. Thanks for having me. Dion. Ama, thanks. Isnt Sann Santa Clara counw program launched today protects people from food theft.
