You of all people certainly know how vulnerable this city is to flooding but honestly, this was an event that would have flooded any city. A record day of rainfall here for september. It resulted in hundreds of rescues, hundreds of cars being rescued. This after a day across Southeast Texas that was nothing short of mayhem. Reporter this morning, officials in Harris County are saying more than a thousand people here have been rescued so far. Coast guard helicopter crews met patients and evacuated them out of the flood zone using everything from airboats, tractors and dump trucks to pull people and pets to safety. When you get there and you see rivers of water flowing into these neighborhoods and impacting dozens of homes, it really is hescene. Reporter guests and employees trapped by rising waters in this beaumont hotel. Children at some houston schools were told to shelter in place. It was total chaos on the roadways as parents tried to reach their kids in a day that saw as much as nine inches of rain. Stalled out cars littering the streets and police recovering over 200 vehicles. Neighbors lending hands, pushing drivers free where they can. Even i chipped in. One, two, three. Two cars stalling right in front of us in less than five minute. This is one intersection. All around this city cars are abandoned. It is an absolute standstill nightmare. Authorities say he traveled to lebanon ten times in 17 years getting extensive weapons training, ak47s, m16s and bombmaking. Court documents showing drawings saab allegedly made of explosives. Its those kind of locations theyre looking for because they want to inflict maximum fear and then potentially maximum economic damage on the united states. Abc news now learned that call was to the president of ukraine. Overnight President Trumps personal attorney coming to his defense in an explosive interview. Our chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas has the very latest. Reporter this morning, multiple sources telling abc news that whistleblower complaint involved a phone call between President Trump and the president of ukraine earlier this summer. While we dont yet know the details of the call, the Washington Post reports the president made a promise to a foreign leader alarming one Administration Official who filed a complaint with the Inspector General of the intelligence community. The latest accusation will only fuel the concerns of House Democrats who were already investigating whether President Trump and his personal attorney, rudy giuliani, were pressuring ukrainian officials to look into Vice President joe bidens diplomatic efforts in that country when his son was doing business there during the obama administration. Another death reported, this time in missouri, and the cdc now confirming there have been more than 500 cases of lung injuries associated with vaping. Yes, as you said this morning missouri officials are reporting the first recorded vapingrelated death in the state bringing the nationwide death toll to 8. The victim, a man in his 40s who had a history of vaping but normal lung function prior to starting vaping in may of 2019. Now, the cdc reports the number of cases involving vapingrelated illness has spiked. 530 people in 38 states and one territory have experienced lung injuries associated with the use of ecigarette or vaping products. A surge of 150 cases in just the past week. Now the fda is revealing that its pursuing a criminal investigation into these vapingrelated illnesses. Seems like every day were hearing about a vapingrelated illness or death. Health Officials Say most of the patients are young and male. Thats right, threefourths of them under the age of 25. In the cases where they have the complete data the majority of the patients are young adults who had a history of ecigarette or vaping use. The majority of them male. The cdc has yet to find one particular ingredient associated with these incidents, however, they insist that users do not add anything to their cartridges and avoid the black market as well. This shows you how quickly something can happen at altitude and how fast the pilots have to react. It was sudden and shocking for the delta passengers. I was losing it because you really just didnt understand what was going on. It was so scary. Reporter the jetliner nosing down dramatically losing altitude. Some frightened passengers texting their loved ones. You know, i thought this is how its going to end, so i took my son and hugged him up against my chest as hard as i could. Reporter the oxygen masks dropping, suggesting that the boeing 767 could be depressurizing. The air so thin with little oxygen at altitude, minutes matter. One of the flight attendants i believe grabbed the intercom and repeatedly stated do not panic. Do not panic. A lot of people were kind of hyperventilating, breathing really hard. Reporter delta said the crew from the flight in atlanta wednesday not good a warning, an irregularity and the procedure is get to 10,000 feet so no warning from the pilots. Its scary in the cabin but the pilots dont have time at that initial point. Each of those oxygen masks provides about ten minutes of useful oxygen. Meaning that the pilots have a very short amount of time to get the airplane down to a lower altitude. Reporter in just eight minutes the jet lost 30,000 feet in altitude from 39,000 feet to 10,000 where the masks are not needed. It doesnt appear this jet actually lost pressure, but it is a real danger. In 2017 an American Airlines commuter jet lost pressurization. At least one passenger lost consciousness. And this ryanair jet had to lose nearly 30,000 feet in altitude when it did lose cabin pressure. Its actually an uncommon occurrence and so you always see this happy ending, scary for the people in the back, but well handled by the crew. Reporter the jet diverted to tampa, the passengers were rebooked to get them to their final destination of ft. Lauderdale. Delta tells us they flew in a special team to look at the aircraft but so far no indication why the pilots got the warning light. As we say, everyone is okay. Still a lot of questions. Tropical storm imelda spinning up and moving in and not moving, dumping in some cases 43 inches of rain over a threeday stretch and here in houston an alltime record broken for any day in september with over nine inches falling yesterday and there was chaos because of that. Roads were flooded. People were stranded. Over 1,000 rescues, both from home or cars of people, and folks who didnt need rescued just left their cars out there. We had a fleet of 150 tow trucks that went out to clear those hundreds of cars that were abandoned. Folks that needed rescued, there were Good Samaritans out there getting creative, one of which dropped a ladder down to a man that came up with a child in his arms, saving that childs life. Unbelievable stuff. And the kids were in school so a number of schools had to shelter in place as those schools began to flood. There were two fatalities, one of which was a man driving in water that was far too deep. Many of these scenes reminiscent of Hurricane Harvey which hit the area two years ago with 60 inches of rain. What about between now and their senior year, 14 and 18, what do you think youre going to see . A roller coaster of all roller coasters going through. All of them started high school this year. Thats a big adjustment for all of them. I think theyre better people than i was. Turn around and suddenly your kid is sneering. Where did that kid go . Its hard to watch sometimes, but i want parents to take away the kids are going to be okay. These kids are mostly okay. What a bold and brave other sa hes stil abstaining from social media, amazing, and the girls, their parents say, are much more in tune with what feels healthy and what does not. One dad told us, michael, the kids can handle tough subjects. They just need to be asked and given space without judgment to talk about them. I think sometimes as parents youre afraid to throw too much on your kids plate but so many parents out there watching this morning, what can they do to help their kids keep that early confidence, the confidence that they had when theyre nine . These parents are saying whats really important, give them a space to talk. These kids got a chance on a regular basis to talk to each other. Theyll have those dips. Thats just what it is, its science. These kids brains change but if you stay there as a parent and listen, let them talk, give them space to do it, theyll probably be okay. Lets hope. Geoffrey, what we wanted to do, today we wanted to learn how to make enough food for a crowd. Lara and i had our shot at it. We had some good food made for us. Ginger informed me she has one of these but the food never tastes right. Nope, never does. Ginger, tom, cecilia, its their turn. All right. What will we do. A bunch of stuff for a crowd but well do a queso dip. Everybody loves queso. The problem with whats happening, its not you, its the recipe, okay. Because food this isnt a magical device thats really great but the recipe has t here pour it in . Cream cheese. Does it matter. Very easy. Does it matter what kind of cheat . Cream cheese, tomatoes, right, chopped jalapenos. This is cooking, wow. Milk, pap freak i cant. Put it on, your instant pot. Five minutes, done. High pressure. Right here. If you want to double it because a lot want to do a big party, do you cook it for longer. No. Thats like a wifes tale. Same five minutes, its just the amount of stuff have you in there. Five minutes and you can share it. We made its healthy. Its not that healthy but at least you feel good. What do you think, cecilia . We have chips, radishes. Its queso but its for a crowd. Im going to make another. You would think with the instant pot chili would be perfect. Im doing turkey chili. I love chili. You can use dark meat, white meat. I seared off the turkey first on the saute mode and well dump and stir. A term we use. Everything, go. Salt, pepper. Scallions. Goer for it. Its not a speed drill. Beans. Everyone has got to get it together. Some tomato paste. All of it . One of my favorites, beer. Beer, all right. I always have beer. Can you have beer with it. Everybody got so excited when you said beer. Chicken stock and fire roasted tomatoes which is tomatoes grilled, basically. You cover that on high 20 minutes, done. Only 20 minutes. I can do this . For people like ginger, sometimes when youre cooking here it says burn. What does that mean. Burn means, you know what that means. I know what its means. The pot telling you youll have a problem. You want to stop, hit the cancel. Like drop and roll. Take it out, exactly. Take out scrape off the bottom then put more liquid in it. It means theres not enough liquid. It warns you before it happens. Turkey chili here. This is the turkey chili. Crema. You put out all the spreads. The crema, chili, garnishes. Some people like cream, you dont have to put it on everybodys. Im going at it. 20 minutes. 20 minutes. Okay. [ applause ] can you do it with more meat . Well help start right here. You like i know you like meatballs. Im out the way. This is threemeat meatballs again. Beef, veal and sausage. I love sausage because sausage has all that great flavor. Why not use it. Its dump garlic, onions, parmesan cheese. Oh. Lots of it. Egg. And cream and then well mix, mix, mix. Probably. You dont have to mix it. You dont have to mix it. Weve done that for you and take these and want to put them in this pot here and put oil. How much oil . Youre browning these in no. Then put them in. This is already hot. Ready . Saute. This is the beauty this all in one pan, okay. So obviously you take these and take them out and guess what, youll leave the fat. All that fat is love. Its love and flavor. Thats what it is. The days of low fat stuff is crazy because thats where the flavor is thats what i tell my waistline. Its love. Youll put all of these in and do this for how long . Just a few four minutes until its brown. Youre into the cooking them. Just searing them. So i see, see all the good stuff in there. You dont have to stir them. Turn them once. Sauce, tomayto, tomahto. Salt, pepper. Garlic. Basil. Ginger, youre doing it. A many, you guys. Chopped roesmary. Oh, yum. All right. Put these in. You put in these eight minutes and you got a magnificent bunch of meatballs. Eight minutes. [ applause ] now i know when you do use it a lot there is a silicone band that gets dirty. Everything that is new has a new car smell. You cook and burn it off first, vinegar, water and lemon on the steam and its all gone and clean. You can do that again. You want to try it . But i went, okay, then why dont you use that for that kind of character. The screen really does if you look closely, it tells you who that person is because you cant hide from yourself.
