Now to the murder that was killed one of the most sensational crimes on the peninsula. The murder case is finally going to trial. Tiffany lee, the heir of a welty chinese family and her boyfriend are accused of murdering the father of her two children. Reporter vic lee is live at the hall of justice in redwood city with the story. Vic. Well, ama, youre absolutely right. This case, this murder case, has received so much publicity, the trial finally starting tomorrow. The jurors have been picked. Motions have been filed. Opening statements tomorrow here at the courthouse at 9 30, and by the way, we were surprised to see tiffany li here in the courthouse today. On the day before her trial, tiffany li appeared in court to attend a hearin on last minute motions filed by her lawyers. Li had been diagnosed with cancer last year. She was almost stage 4 by the time she got to surgery on her breast cancer, and is lucky to be here at all. Finally, we can get this to trial and let members of our Community Sit on their jury and decide whether or not they committed this crime. A crime that made international headlines. Tiffany li, charged with murder, the daughter from a powerful wealthy family in china living in a mansion which her daughter bought in affluent hillsborough. Her bail set to be one of the top ten highest bails ever in the country. Her boyfriend also charged with murder. Prosecutors say li and her boyfriend killed keith green, a former boyfriend and father of lis two children. In april 2016, li and green met at a pancake house. That was the last time he was seen. The next month, his body was discovered in a field in sonoma co dead fro a single gunshot wound to the neck. Prosecutors say li p murder and her boyfriend committed the murder. Lis trainer, mixed martial artist fighter was charged with dumping greens body after the murder. He was arrested at his burlingame apartment. Adelea pleaded no contest to being an accessory to murder, served three years in county yale, and is now free. We determined what he was guilty of was disposing of the body, and our belief was he was not involved in the murder. He made a plea deal with the prosecution and will testify as a key witness against li and her boyfriend. Well, the jurors have been told that this trial will probably last about a couple of months, maybe, and just before thanksgiving. And by the way, there are 60 witnesses that have been called. 60 witnesses for this trial about half for the prosecutor, half for the defense. And as i said before, li made bail. That incredibly high bail. Shes been free, living at home, but being monitored with a gps ankle device. Vic lee, abc 7 news. 60 winltsztnesses . How unusual is that . You know, actuall, ama, i do remember a court case right here in the same San Mateo County courthouse, i think it was around 2004, 2005, where four people were charged with murdering a Wells Fargo Bank manager in burlingame, and believe it or not, in that case, there were over 200 witnesses called. I believe about 140, 150 of them testified for the prosecution alone. Back to you, ama. Wow. All right, vic, thank you so much. In santa cruz, a growing Homeless Population has pushed some to camp out on the citys marquee beach overnight. The city is now trying to do something about that by enacting a kerr view on main beach. Quis nguyen is live on the boardwalk with more on the story. The city council has passed a curfew for the beach behind me. Take a look at my photographer zooms in. You can see some of the tents that have lined up along the coastside. The policy wont take effect for another six months, but its likely to face legal challenges. Many say its the crown jewel of santa cruz. A Gathering Spot for some who are soaking up the sun. But for street performer marty, the main beach at the boardwalk is home for now. I feel more comfortable living outside. I like having more freedom in my life to go about doing the things i want to do. Marty and his girlfriend moved here two weeks ago in search of a safe police to sleep. Nearly two dozen tents have popped up near the wharf. Some say its connected to a densely populated camp that shut down in may. Its upsetting when anybody asks you to leave any spot youre comfortable in. Theres win Little Police can do to clear the tenlts, but with concerns growing over Public Health and safety problems, a new policy could change it up. Starting six months from today, the dry sand portion of main beach will be closed between midnight and one hour before sunrise. However, that section can still be used to access the wet sand area, which will remain open for 24 hours a day to comply with mandates from the California Coastal commission. Some of the homeless believe theyre being unfairly targeted. To try to say that those people who like to be here at night are something is wrong with them, theres nothing wrong with enjoying the nighttime, the moon, the stars, the sound of the ocean. Santa cruz county has long struggled to find housing for its Homeless Population, now estimated at 2200 people. These numbers make it one of the highest in the country. Circumstances, you know, are different for everybody. You know . And some people just need help. And theyre too afraid to ask for it. This community now trying to strike a balance. And we have been told that city officials have been in a meeting the entire day about this ordinance. Again, it was passed late last night. There will be some sort of Public Meeting about the ordinance in the months to come, so this is certainly going to be something that well be following. Were live in santa cruz, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. Today in oakland, the city began demolishing structures that have been deemed fire hazards. Sky 7 flew over work today. About 25 to 30 Homeless People have been living in these structures between 81st and 55th avenues. The city gave residents twoweek notice. Two organizations have been working to help the people there. Instead of evicting and demolishing, we need to support people to live safe and healthy and dignified lives in oakland. These are residents of our community and we have an obligation to their human rights. The homeless residents can stay under the tracks but they must use tents instead. One organization raised money to buy tents. In berkeley, caltrans is shutting down another homeless encampment under 80 and university avenue. In the last ten minutes, we learned the former judge involved in the infamous brock turner Sexual Assault case is no longer a tennis coach. He was hired to coach a Junior VarsityGirls Tennis Team. Were live with new gements were hearing fro the school district. Good afternoon. Yeah, this story has been developing just in the last half hour. Its important to note that judge persky was recalled last year, but he was never charged with any crime and hes free to work wherever he wants, but many parents and students were appalled he was hired as a andy released a statement today. Effective september 11, mr. Perskys employment with the strict as the Junior Varsity girls tennis coach has ended. We believe this outcome is the best in the best interest of our students and school community. The district will begin the search for a new coach immediately, with the goal of insuring that the athletes on the Jv Tennis Team are able to have a successful season. What this is telling me is they have been listening to all of those comments. In fact, i have been talking to those girls all day today. They were appalled that he was hired. They wanted him removed, and it seems they got what they want. This is what they had to say. Really appalling that this person would be coaching the tennis team. Because like i said, i just think theres a better person for the job then why wouldnt they go with that person and have to deal with the fact that these women on the tennis team might be uncomfortable around him or the fact that its a statement of our values, as the administration that were able to overlook such an incident and still want to have this person be a part of our staff. I am extremely disappointed at the decision to hire former judge persky. As a tennis coach, hes also a mandated reporter. For any wrongdoing within the team. How can the limbrook staff, admin, and more importantly students and Parents Trust a man who blatantly disregarded the pain and trauma Chanel Miller experienced and trust him to advocate for victims in the future . Share this news and make sure that everyone at limbrook and outside of limbrook understand what it would mean for judge aaron persky to be a Girls Tennis Team coach, and were asking everybody reach out to the limbrook administration and let them know that you would not want judge persky to be coaching our young girls. To the administration at limbrook high school, i really truly hope youre listening to the thousands of students, parents, alums, and Community Members that have come forward to speak about this issue. Thenjudge aaron persky sentenced brock turner to six months in county jail saying he was worried about the impact a long sentence would have on turner who was a swimmer at stanford at the time. The woman he assaulted recently revealed her identity. This outcry to have persky removed as the tennis coach here at this School Started in a private alumni facebook page. I was talking to those women all day today. They told me they were going to start petitions and protests if this action did not happen. Since we posted the story on our facebook page, however, theres been mixed reviewed. Let me read you some of the comments counter to this. One viewer said the guy is not a danger and made a judgment based on the district attorneys recommendation. He lost his job already. Get over it. Another comment says i dont understand the anger about this. He lost his job. He made an unpalatable decision based on the d. Aflss recommendation. I will be talking to more women and following this debate as were just hearing this decision by the fremont united district to remove persky from his job as a tennis coach at this school. Chris reyes for abc 7 news. Thank you. A bill that would give wage and benefit protections to workers in the socalled gig economy is now headed to Governor Newsom, who is expected to sign it. The assembly overwhelmingly approved the bill today, and a defeat for Companies Like uber and lyft, which oppose legislation. Uber, lyft, and Similar Companies are hopeful Governor Newsom can negotiate a new proposal with unions that would create a separate set of rules for gig workers. If not, expect the companies to fight the law at the ballot box. And there are some 680 pieces of legislation eligible for a vote this week in sacramento. This, according to the l. A. Times. Here are some of the more highprofile ones. Several bills seeking to expand californias rules governor gun violence, restraining orders. Senate bill 1 would insure current federal environmental rules are enforced by the state. That is if the Trump Administration rolls them back. And another bill would cap the annual rent increases for most tenants in the state of california. The ncaas board of governors is urging Governor Newsom not to sign a bill that would allow College Athletes in california to receive money for their names, likenesses, or images. The board says the socalled fair pay to play act would give california schools an unfair recruiting advantage. And would force the ncaa to declare those schools ineligible for its events. The bill is headed back to the state senate after being unanimously approved by the state assembly on monday. If approved, it heads to the governors desk. A september surprise for anybody making the drive from lake tahoe to reno yesterday. The National Weather service tweeted this photo of snow on the mt. Rose highway. Heat coming, right . Its started already. Its going to get hotter tomorrow. Heres a look at live doppler 7. Sunny skies across the bay area right now. We had quite a warmup since this time yesterday. Check out the 24hour temperature change. Seven degrees warmer here in San Francisco as well as in novato, nampa, hayward, concord, 12 degrees warmer in livermore. Heres the view looking out over San Francisco under sunny skies where its 70 degrees now. 78 in oakland. Mid 80s in redwood city, san jose, gilroy, and 66 at half moon bay. R 80s at concord and livermore, and the view from the emeryville camera looking back at San Francisco, we present you these forecast features. Much warmer pattern with us for the next three days. Well have temperatures above 100 degrees in many inland areas byriday afternoon. And it will be turning sharply cooler on sunday. Right now, though, were looking at air quality declining as temperatures are rising. So tomorrow will be a spare the air day. Looks like the poorest air quality will be in the inland east bay and the santa clara valley. Moderate in the north bay and the South Central bay, and we expect good air quality actually on the coast and on the central bay. Overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s, although a little milder in some inland east bay locations where lows will drop only to the 60s. And forecast animation pretty much tells the picture about fog moving away from the coastline. We wont see much of it overnight. Well see almost none of it tomorrow. Sunny skies from coast to inland, and high temperatures will range from mid 70s at the coast to upper 80s in the warmest bay shore locations, to mid and upper 90s in the warmest inland spots. Then on friday, it gets even hotter. Especially inland where well see numerous triple digits readings and highs around the bay shoreline on friday near 90. Hayward may top out around 91 on friday. On saturday, the heat holds on inland. Well still see upper 90s inland on saturday, but theyll be minor cooler near the coast and bay and sunday brings cooler weather to all parts of the bay area. Temperatures are going to drop sharply from the readings tomorrow and saturday. Heres the fraid and saturday, i should say. Heres the accuweather sevenday forecast. And look at that big drop in temperatures on sunday along with breezy conditions, sprinkles are possible on monday. Were not calling for significant rainfall yet, but there could be a few wet spots. Temperatures will be below average for this time of year, and then temperatures will settle in, so a sort of seasonal pattern, a little below seasonal pattern midweek next week. Mid 80s inland, but triple digits by friday. Thank you. Help for Small Businesses in San Francisco. The new plan that could make things easier to open up shop in the city. Such a moving moment today as taps was played as the new york memorial in remembrance of the 9 11 victims. Can you believe its been 18 years since the deadly attacks in new york, pennsylvania, and at the pentagon . Today, there were september 11th Remembrance Services across the nation from the bay area to new york city. And thats where abcs maggie rulli is with more on this somber anniversary. Marie rose abbad. Nearly 3,000 names read out loud. David lawrence angel. As the nation stops to remember all of those who lost their lives 18 years ago during the terror attacks on september 11th. At ground zero, where the first two planes flew into the twin towers, the memories are still raw. Two airplanes have attacked apparently. 23 nypd officers died that day, but more than ten times that number have lost their lives to 9 11related illnesses. President trump has signed a law earlier this year that funds care for those suffering from illnesses from their heroism that day. The ceremonies today are seen not only as a chance to remember, but a chance to come together as one nation. To me, its the greatest legacy of 9 11. That we have this immense capacity for compassion and caring and empathy. And service to one another. In washington, d. C. President trump honors the men and women who died when the third plane hit the pentagon. We cannot erase the pain, but we offer you our eternal pledge that your loved ones will never, ever be forgotten. And Vice President mike pence remembering shanksville, pennsylvania. Here, were a common field one day became a field of honor forever. 18 years later, new york is making smur that the next generation never forgets. Under a new state law signed just days ago here in new york, today all Public Schools will hold a moment of silence. Maggie rulli, abc news, new york. Several bay area cities held september 11th remembrances today. Some of the most poignant are held by firefighters honoring fellow First Responders who gave their lives that day. Heres abc 7 News Reporter amy hollyfield. San francisco firefighters solemnly remember the victims of the september 11th attacks this morning. Pausing for a moment of silence. And then reading aloud the names of the 343 firefighters who were killed. Vincent f. Giamona. The fire chief says she feels emotional when she hears those names and thinks about how firefighters are all part of one big family. This made it 343 times more real for us. They lowered the flag to half staff with dignitaries and firefighters looking on as they do every year on this day. And the chief promises it will always be this way. There will never be a september 11th where we in the san franciscfire department dont do something to commemorate. But this day can also be about service and being together. More than 1,000 volunteers gathered in San Francisco to pack meals for those in need. This is happening in eight u. S. Cities. The goal is to create this in 20 cities by the 20th anniversary. Its just doing good for the community. You know, taking a day of tragedy and turning it into a day of just like helping others and celebration, doing good. The group paused to remember the victims of the attacks. But then got to the work of turning this day into one of doing good. Its a tough day, but its good to give back and sort of recycle the energy into something positive. Another suggestion on what to do today, give blood in honor of the victims. Everyone agreeing on one thing, the most important part is we never forget. In San Francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. And for more on todays services, go to abc7news. Com. Tomorrow night, ten democrats will take the stage for the abc news democratic debate. This is the first time that all the top polling candidates will be on the same stage. You can see the ten candidates here. Now, the preparations are well under way. Abc news political director rick klein is in houston ahead of the event. Abc 7 news anchor asked him what the candidates need to do to stand out from the crowd. Whats the argument . These guys all like each other. The men and women on the stage are allies. They all agree on innecessity from the democrats perspective of defeating donald trump. Why are you better than the others . As thats reflected in their values, in how theyre engaging with others and the policy proposals theyre bringing forward, thats the critical thing. If you cant draw distinctions, making a broad argument against donald trump isnt going to cut it if youre not capturing a share of the electorate. Only one of the people onstage is going to be the nominee. We have seen biden, warren, and sanders looking like they have a major stair of the electorate, even though its early on. Do you think a debate early in the game has the potential to change that . I think it begins a larger conversation between the candidates. It does have a winnowing effect. Always has that opportunity for a breakthrough moment, to vault yourself into contention. And look, i dont think any one of these debates, as they roll out, are going to be determinative. Thats pretty rare that someone makes or breaks a candidacy based on one performance, but it is an opportunity to reach far more voters that are tuning in in a typical trip to iowa or new hampshire. A lot of people will be watching and a lot of democrat, voters will be watching this for signals about who they want to be the nommy. Since the last debate, we have seen some of the candidates apologizing for some gaffes. Kamala harris, joe biden. Do you think that will be a major part of the debate, bringing the items up and kind of talking and having the candidates answer for those . Yeah, its up to the candidates. How much do they want to make misstatements, false statements, and the like, gaffes, a major issue . Does it add up to something larger . I dont think anyone wants to be seen as attacking for attackings sake. They all make mistakes. They all acknowledge mistakes to a varying and different extent. If they can connect it to a larger reason to want to buy in to a candidates vision or question their loyalty to another candidate, that becomes a threshold question. And the debate will be hosted by abc news. It will be hosted by abc news in partnership with univision. You can watch it right here on abc 7 starting at 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow night. The Winchester Mystery House is a historic landmark in san jose, but you have never taken a tour here like this before. Sarah winchester is opening the doors to her home, and taking you into the horrifying world of unhinged. Its time. The house is coming. You must go. Save yourselves. Unhinged is like something we have never, ever tried before. It is something that is a direct result of a lot of guests asking us for more of kind of a scary immersive experience this time of year. We have been open almost 100 years and so lucky that we still remain a very popular attraction, but a lot of our guests do like coming here at night. And they like to have a different type of experience. And i think this time of year is the perfect time to offer that. I was expecting it to be like a little more like historical, but just spooky because it was dark. I had done this tour twice before. More of a historical aspect of it, and thats not what we did. Theres no comparable. I have been through these rooms, but not like this. Winchester mystery house is incredible unique. Were a landmark. Were on the registry. Sarah winchester inherited the fortune for the winchester arms company, and she started building this house and didnt stop for 38 straight years. What isnt unique about the Winchester Mystery House . Winchester mystery house has doors that lead to nowhere, stairs that lead to the ceiling. It has 160 rooms. Its 25,000 square feet. And it was in a constant state of becoming in sarah winchesters lifetime. Were not sure why she built it the way she did. I cant wait to see the guests reaction to the show. I think its something that is just going to blow them away. Were featuring parse of the house that have never before been seen like areas of the basement that have not been seen since sarahs time, and the show on the front gardens is going to blow people away. I like the jump scares because i like being frightened. My voice is like this because i was screaming in there. I only screamed a million times, so anything that jumps out at me or slams, im on the ceiling. Thi time of year, people really enjoy doing things at night and in the spirit of the season and what better place to do than Winchester Mystery House .
