Two marine corps veterans who forged an unbreakable bond in combat are taking their relationship to greater heights. Thats john nelson carrying his buddy, jonathan blank, on his back on steep terrain. Nelson lost both legs in an explosion two years ago. I drove by and thought, you know what, i think im going to take john up to the top of that by myself. Ive got legs. I couldnt imagine if i i tought this would be something epic for him to experience to actually get to the saddle. That emotion, that brotherhood inspired nelson to make the trek painfully carrying 135 pounds of weight on his back. Blank hopes their bond will inspire others who think they can accomplish something. The two plan to conquer californias mt. Whitney on veterans day. You talk about friendship, an incredible bond. Thats it. For sure. Well, the clock is ticking to the next democratic debate. Today marked the final deadline. So who made the cut . Well tell you whos in and whos out. And President Trump is set there will be a dramatic change in the field of Democratic Candidates appearing in the partys debate next month in houston. Today the Democratic National committee announced that only ten of the nearly two dozen candidates in the race have qualified for the stage. Here they are in alphabetical order. Biden, booker, buttigieg, castro, harris, klobuchar, orourke, sanders, warren and yang. Among those who are out, bay area billionaire activist tom steyer, montana governor steve bullock, new york senator Kirsten Gillibrand and selfhelp author mary ann williamson. This is a major blow to anyone that doesnt make the stage but theres another debate just a month away and you still have an opportunity to qualify in polling. Dnc rules state they have to register at least 2 in four approved polls and leave 130,000. Steyer achieved the latter. Gillibrand actually dropped out of the race shortly after the debate deadline. The 52yearold new york senator announced her decision wednesday on twitter. Her campaign was plagued by low polling and also fundraising struggles. Lets continue the political talk with congressman mark and follow up on the news with Kirsten Gillibrand dropping out. It seemed like we started with 206 candidates and now were down to something more manageable. Realistic probably if youre not in that group of ten in the debate, you probably dont have much of a shot. But when do you think were really going to narrow this down to a field of maybe five or so or six that has a legitimate chance of capturing the nomination . I think in the next series of debates next month, it will get down to five, i think, is probably what were looking at. The polling is showing its sort of a threeperson race right now. What do you make of joe bidens situation . Because he was the de facto man to beat coming in, and it seems like his support is slipping somewhat. Well, its gone up and down. I just was reading another story in the New York Times that just got posted that says that now there are new polls that show hes way ahead nationally. Oh, really . But its the three of them. Which three, bernie and biden. Along with woerarren. Interesting. Do you have a thought about how this will play itself out . I think its really fluid. I think people are making up their minds. Its so unusual because this president is sucking the energy out of everybodys day. So its very, very different. All right. Lets switch gears here. You held a Climate Change town hall monday, a subject highlighted by fires in the amazon thats received worldwide attention now. Can the u. S. Take a leadership role when we have a president that doesnt seem to think that this is aihuge priority . No, and he clearly doesnt understand. He doesnt the difference between traditional pollutants like smog and carbon. California is leading the country and many ways the world. Were dropping our carbon in california even with our economy growing. So it can be done. We just need a president who realizes that science is telling us that the earths health is in peril. Can money be made with the new technology yes. That would seem to drive some of the impetus here to get things done. No, ive had this debate with a couple of my colleagues from texas. I told them youre going to make West Virginia look like a small problem because as the fleet changes and were on the converge of having 25,000 retail battery electric cars, chinese are putting a lot of money in this and on the verge of doing that, then the world will change and fossil fuels are not going to be as important and they shouldnt be. Lets follow up with californias fire situation, because weve seen the devastation thats taken place the last two years. Were heading into another fire season. As you look at the landscape, literally the landscape, where are we . And where are we with federal funds and assistance if needed . Well, the federal government is not doing enough, largely because of this administration. The Newsom Administration i think is doing a really good job. The California Office of Emergency Services in the Governors Office has a National Reputation at being very good at these things but we need more resources, we need more technology a more firefighters. What else is on your plate . Well, theres something new every day. Immigration is a big thing. We spend a lot of time in our district helping people because the situation is so fluid with the administration. A lot of sad cases where people are being forced to go back to countries that they dont have family in. They have been here a long time and did everything legally so the rules have changed. We spend a lot of time on that. Health care. A lot of interest in what were going to do nationally on health care. For sure. Certainly witthe next round of debates that will be a focus as well. Yeah. Moving to a new home can be exciting and stressful. The moving industry has been compared to the wild, wild west. So how do you find a moving company that you can trust . You ask 7 on your sides michael finney. He spoke to Kevin Brassler with this advice. Kevin brassler is the executive editor for bay area consumers checkbook. He joins me in the studio with some tips. How do you find the right moving company . Use our ratings. Weve evaluated local movers here in the bay area for quality by surveying their customers. Weve also evaluated them for price. We came up with kind of hypothetical moves and asked them to quote prices for our very kind of carefully specified hypothetical local and Long Distance moves. Were there wide differences in costs . Massive differences in costs. We found that some moving companies charge thousands of dollars more than others for the exact same move. You say, yeah, but the moving company that has the lowest price, you might want to avoid them because they dont do good work. Thats not true at all. We found overwhelmingly theres no price quality relationship. And its a pain, but you really do need movers to come out, check out what you have and give you a price quote in writing, because often the low priced movers do just as good of work as the highpriced movers. Theres no relationship there. Theres been a problem with moving companies basically holding peoples belongings hostage. Its really important to have them look at everything you have to move in advance and give you a written price to do the work, everything included. Including the packing. And the reason is here in california, if a moving company for a local move is transporting your stuff, if they give you a price in writing, they also have to give you a not price. If they give you a price in writing, either a not to exceed price or the price they have given you is their not to exceed price and they cant charge more than that even if the move takes longer than expected. Its a great law that california has to protect consumers against movers trying to gouge them and charge them for more time and work than they thought was going to do the work. Are wellknown names better at moving you than off brand . I dont think so. I think one danger in terms of hiring a mover these days is a lot of the companies that advertise online arent even moving outfits, theyre brokers. And some of these brokers are not a lot of these brokers actually are not hiring good people to do the work. Youre paying the broker, and the broker is often pretending to be a local moving company and theyre not. Theyre off in florida or Something Like that. Theyre just trying to find somebody in the area to move your stuff. Even worse, some of these brokers are taking peoples money and not doing anything for them. So these are like the fake florists. It is. They put a local name on it, you give them a call, theyre nowhere its a big problem. So i think its really important, you can avoid that problem by, again, having these companies out to your home, having them look at your stuff and ge you a written price to do the work, whether its local, whether its Long Distance, because that way you know youre actually dealing with a company thats at least legitimate enough to send a representative. At bare minimum, they know somebody who lives here. Its not a high bar, michael, but at least then you know youre dealing with somebody whos got trucks and crews hopefully. Excellent, very good. Kevin has put together an article on this and give you access to the entire study. To check it out go to abc7news. Com. Kevin, thanks for joining us. Thanks, michael. Reporter remember peter and vicki . They give back to their community through animalassisted happiness. Here at abc 7 we are dedicated to building a better bay area. As a result, two viewers are furthering that cause by building a better smile farm. Initially i got involved by watching the story on abc 7 news and really was encouraged by that, especially with the focus being on the animals, the kids, and it was a volunteer organization. And that really hit home for dale and myself. We have a long list of projects were taking care of. Theyre knocking them out like one after the other. It really helps focus our program and helps us diversify what animals we have and makes it more robust as a whole. We came down, visited them and asked if there was some way to help out. They said, great, wed love to have a Sprinkler System for our garden. So we put in 300 feet of sprinkler pipe for them and i think six or eight hose bibs. Then we said whats the next project . They said wed love to have a fence. They ordered the material. We came down, the material was delivered here. We started working on this fence maybe ten days ago, and now its like 95 complete. We really feel good about what were doing because not only does it help the animals, but more importantly it helps the kids and thats what we want to do. Its by kids for kids. It was okay, kids, volunteer, figure out what it is youd like to do. We have so many youth volunteers that want to do projects at the farm and were starting to get more and more adult volunteers. We have a long list of projects. Were pretty lean on profit. We dont have a ton of staff so its really helpful to have them helping us out. Everyone is welcome to come and help here. Im really grateful for everyone that spends their time and effort here. We really have a fondness for the kids. And if we can help in some small way, we feel good about that. Theres always a need for people to volunteer, especially people that have some skills that you can donate to a good cause. Weope that people would see this and maybe come in and want to work with us or contact the folks that actually run this facility or other facilities, whether its this one or something else. Just get involved. Thats fantastic. We want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. Share them by joining our better Bay Area Group on facebook.
