An oklahoma judge ordering Johnson Johnson to pay more than half a billion dollars for contributing to that states drug epidemic. We are talking about the mass addiction to prescription painkillers. Besides that stunning decision involving Johnson Johnson accused of aggressively marketing their drugs which led to opioid abuse were about to show youew video in a separate case of the former head of Purdue Pharma defend their company and defend the marketing of oxycontin. Reporter this morning what could be a landmark decision, an oklahoma judge ordering Johnson Johnson to pay his state more than half a billion dollars. The first ever court ruling holding a Company Responsible for their role in the Opioid Crisis. The Opioid Crisis is an imminent danger and menace to oklahomans. Reporter this judgment following another surprise decision concerning another drug manufacturer. Purdue pharma owned by members of the billionaire Sackler Family, best known as the developer of the painkiller oxycontin. Do you know how much the Sackler Family has made off the sale of oxycontin . I dont know. But fair to say its over a billion dollars. It would be fair to say that, yes. Reporter for the first time were now seeing and hearing from dr. Richard sackler, the former chairman and president of Purdue Pharma respond to questions under oath. Do you believe that any of purdues conduct has led to an increase in people being addicted in the commonwealth of kentucky . No. Reporter the clips part of a more than eighthour video deposition from 2015 obtained by the investigative News Organization propublica, sackler responding i dont know more than 100 times. Do you know if its over 10 billion . I dont think so. Do you know if its over 5 billion . I dont know. Reporter sackler questioned about the profiting and alleged aggressive marketing of the drug thats been linked to the u. S. Opioid epidemic. These tapes represent the first time the public will see a member of the Sackler Family be questioned about whether or not Purdue Pharma played a role in spawning the national Opioid Crisis. Reporter on monday, after a 3 1 2year legal battle brought by stat, which is part of Boston Globe Life Sciences media, the Kentucky Supreme Court cleared the way for the release of the Court Records relating to Purdue Pharmas marketing of oxycontin. The company was accused of falsely promoting oxycontin, including failing to alert doctors that it was stronger than morphine. There is no way that this intended or had the effect of causing physicians to overlook the fact that it was twice as potent. It was called out in virtually every promotional piece of literature. Now, that deposition video you just saw was from a court case that Purdue Pharma settled for more than 20 million. They are facing more than 2,000 other lawsuits. They maintain they are not responsible for fueling the Opioid Crisis. We actually just heard from dr. Sacklers attorney who says oxycontin has carried a black box warning since 2001 and has an abuse deterrent formulation since 2010. As for Johnson Johnson and that settlement against one of their companies, they say the company, quote, did not cause the Opioid Crisis in oklahoma and they will appeal that decision. Well, there are a lot of other pending lawsuits right now in the opioid cases. Thousands of them across the country. This case really could end up setting precedent for them. Thats right, cecelia. This case in oklahoma, one legal expert told me is the canary in the coal mine. This no doubt will have an impact on thousands of other cases and were talking about billions of dollars in damages. But i asked two professors from indiana university, theyve been studying and put money behind this issue, one local professor told me they believe Johnson Johnson will lose the appeal. The other told me they think they will win. Well have to wait and see. Thank you, tom. Well be watching that. To the white house now. In a space of a few days he said chinese leader xi jinping was an enemy, then a brilliant leader. President trump says theres a deal ready to be made. The chinese seemed like they are going to wait out president trump, at least through the 2020 election which could really be problems for him. As for iran he said he would meet with the iranian president. That would be a huge move. At first he said he would be willing to do so then he walked that back. The problem is no one can figure out where this president stands or whether what he says one day is what he means the next day. He says that is his negotiating style. No one can figure out the president s stand. Thats the way he likes it. Right now, however, i think the takeaway, the president is not driving events, he is being driven by them, george. A sung a police suv and speeding away slamming into a van killing two children and injuring several others. Janai norman is here with the very latest on this tragedy, good morning, janai. Michael, good morning. Police officers were also injured in the midst of all that chaos that started out as a call for a stabbing and left behind two crash scenes and more than a dozen people hurt. Reporter overnight Authorities Say the suspect in a deadly car chase who tried to steal a police car caused a wreck that left two children dead and at least ten others injured. Were going to need at least two medics. We have two children. I seen just chaos and when i hopped out, there was a woman trying to assist getting a baby out of a car seat that was trapped between a door and a van. Got her out of the van and proceeded to try to get the rest of the kids unbuckled and safely removed. Reporter it started around 7 00 p. M. When officers responded to a stabbing complaint in the nearby town of riverside, but the suspect had already fled the scene. A short time later Riverside Police received a 911 call of a car accident at some point. The suspect entered a Police Cruiser. Reporter a witness captured the ensuing moments on camera. Watch as the officer tries to get the suspect out of his vehicle. As back up arrives, the suspect throw it is car in reverse and speeds off down the street. Yes, he is in a dayton cruiser right now. Follow him. Wherever he goes, you go. Reporter ending ten minutes and nearly five miles later when the suspect crashed the stolen cruiser into several vehicles including a van carrying seven children. Our officers were on scene rather quickly. Were able to take the suspect into custody and the suspect was removed. Were told some of those taken to the hospital had lifethreatening injuries, including some of those children. That suspect is in custody. Was also treated for injuries so a lot of people left hurt in the midst of all this. So easily unavoidable. Avoidable. More on Jeffrey Epsteins death. This morning there are now new questions after the Washington Post reported that footage from at least one camera outside his jail cell is unusable. Diane macedo is at the federal courthouse here in manhattan with the latest on this. Good morning, diane. Reporter good morning, cecilia. Surveillance video may be critical to this probe into how epstein died while in custody at new yorks manhattan correctional center, just beside us, earlier this month. But the Washington Post is now reporting this new setback. A source close to the investigation or sources close to the investigation tell the paper that footage from one of the cameras in the hallway outside epsteins cell is unusable. Now, its not clear why its unusable or what is visible in the usable footage but this is just another failure uncovered at the prison. It was already reported that the guards were supposed to check on him every 30 minutes, yet no one had been by his cell for hours. He also wasnt supposed to be left alone and yet no cell mate was assigned. The convicted sex offender was arrested in july on sex trafficking charges for alleged crimes dating back more than a decade. While the criminal case against epstein is over, alleged coconspirators are still under scrutiny. They are, diane. Its a big day in the court behind you. Epstein the prosecutors are formally going to dismiss their case against epstein in the wake of his death, but mnot before w hear some of his accusers. Reporter it is. The judge in the case is allowing accusers to say their piece here today in court and while the criminal case against epstein will be over, the legal battle, cecilia, is not. Lori loughlin and her husband insisting they will face these charges together. Its a move that could limit their individual defense options. This morning Lori Loughlin and her husband heading to court presenting a united front. Anything to say . Reporter the two expected to appear before a judge this afternoon choosing to be represented by the same law firm. The court asking them to formally waive their right to separate counsel acknowledging any potential conflicts of interest before their trial starts so they cant claim they didnt get a fair trial at a later date. Loughlin and her husband, Fashion Designer Mossimo Giannulli each facing up to four decades behind bars if convicted of federal fraud and Money Laundering charges accused of paying half a Million Dollars in bribes and fees to get their two daughters into usc. He may have embellished, lied a bit on our application. Reporter a legal source close to the full house star telling People Magazine loughlin is panicking behind closed doors obsessing over every detail of the case. Shes not doing anything. Shes just reading the files again and again. This is a fulltime concern of hers. That source telling people, the 55yearold has been in constant communication with her legal team and is keeping track of the other defendants and their deals. She wants to knowho is getting what punishment and how their cases differ from hers. So far 23 of the defendants associated with the scandal have pleaded guilty. Including desperate housewives actress felicity huffman. She admitted to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. As part of her plea deal prosecutors are recommending four months behind bars. But loughlin and giannulli declining a deal maintaining they did nothing wrong. A source close to the family telling People Magazine, lori is ready for this to be over. They all are. At this point it would be better to spend a few months in jail because shes been spending the last several months in her own prison. Now, while loughlin and her husband will share some lawyers they will also each have additional separate lawyers on their individual teams. George . Eva, thanks very much. Lets bring in our senior Legal Correspondent sunny hostin for more on this right now. So talk about this united front strategy and the advantages and disadvantages. The only Real Advantage i think to having separate counsel if you want to cooperate with the government. If you want to take a plea deal if one is if one is going to testify against the other. You usually see that when you have married spouses with little children. One decides to take the fall because i need you to stay at home with the children. That really is theres no benefit to doing that here because these are college age kids. No one really needs to be at home with them. I dont think well see that here. This united front common defense is actually pretty smart because in front of a jury now you have not one but you have two people saying these are baseless allegations. Weidnt do it. For the jury to discount it they have to believe both people are lying. So thats pretty smart strategy. One of giannullis attorneys represented a witness against him. Another one of their firms worked for usc in the past. Does that matter at all . I dont think the fact that the firm represented usc in the past necessarily matters because that case is now closed. Normally that would be a conflict of interest. It does trouble me somewhat that one of the witnesses, potential witnesses against the husband, perhaps worked with this lawyer but they have an additional lawyer on their side that can then step in if that lawyer recuses himself. So they really have covered all of their bases here. Theyre paying a lot of money for a lot of different lawyers to sort of, you know, have this common defense strategy, this united front strategy, but they really have put up walls that will provide them the ability to do this. Theyre still taking a big risk going to trial. They are taking a big, big risk. I mean, if you look at some of the evidence here, they have emails. They have things that are on wiretap. They have other people that will testify against them. Theyre looking at 20 years in prison each. I think its going to be the only trial that we may see here. But, again, common defense, united front, they obviously care deeply about each other and its going to be a pretty good strategy. Okay, sunny hostin, thanks very much. Sure. Ortiz who this weekend shared his first photos since the attack says he hasnt spoken to Dominican Police since their initial interview at a hospital flo following his first of three surgeries. The fame of the world series champion and flashy lifestyle fueling salacious headlines in dominican tabloids suggesting the motive had to do with jealousy. Claims his spokesperson denies. His spokesman telling abc news, ortiz has no enemies in the country and is interested in finding out what really happened. The investigation into what happened taking twists and turns. 72 hours after ortiz was ambushed local authorities initially saying he was the target of a hit man. The reason unknown. Weeks later that framing changing with police saying he was the victim in a case of mistaken identity. His spokesman tells abc, ortiz had no basis for a long time to challenge their theory of mistaken identity. However, as new facts continue to come up, it lends some optimism there may be other conclusions drawn before its over about why david was shot. One couple sharing their story saying they turned to social media to connect with a birth mother only to have their hearts broken and dreams shattered. Its a story we first saw on bbc news and janai norman has the latest. Hi janai. Hi, george. Its hard to imagine the emotional toll this takes on a couple desperately wanting to have a baby and it happened to multiple couples, many with similar stories, describing a devastating back and forth before they realized it was all a fake. Social media is changing the landscape for adoption. Allowing birth mothers to connect with potential adopters. But for one family, the unthinkable became their reality. Samantha and David Stewart wanted nothing more than to have a family and after trying for years, the couple turned to adoption. We met with a director of our agency that we went through, she advised us to create online profiles we could use to put ourselves out there in hope that some birth mothers would come across our profiles. Reporter naomi palace broke the story for the bbc. Its increasingly common for people to adopt on social media and theres lots of benefits to it but i think its opening up passages for people to take advantage. Reporter so thats what the stewarts did. They set up an Instagram Account findingbabystewart and soon after a connection. We were ecstatic. I called my parents and told them, hey, youre going to be grandparents. Reporter but quickly their excitement faded when they realized their connection was too good to be true. I would receive nasty messages saying, this isnt going to work. Were going to find somebody else. Reporter after more and more didnt add up, it became clear that there was no baby and theyd been tricked. It was grieving a child that didnt exist. It was really hard. It was purely emotional manipulation, emotional neediness and just very hurtful behavior with no really clear purpose. Shes not asking for money. Shes not asking for anything material. Shes just doing this to be mean and flip your world upside down. Reporter for the stewarts there is hope. They were recently placed with a baby and are in the final stretches of finalizing their adoption. He is the best thing thats ever happened to us. Hes a little miracle baby. Were very lucky. A lot of peoples story doesnt end like this. Many families left grieving. But for the stewarts they say as soon as parker took his first breath, they were healed. And they say even though this type of deception is out there, they hope it does not deter other families. Awful story. So cruel but were so happy there seems like a happy ending almost there. If youre going to do stuff at home, dont get overwhelmed. Just its your home, your canvas, dont be afraid to make mistakes. Just do it. Keep it simple. Keep it simple. Question for the audience. Anybody here ever tried to redo their own light fixture . No . Yes, we have one yes over there. One yes over there. Walk us through this. This is potentially for a kitchen. Lighting can be expensive but these are connectors. You buy these super cheap, maybe 2 bucks probably. They connect together like this. Thats it. So you can connect them and it tells you youre doing the entire light fixture. Thats it. I thought you were just painting the bulbs or something. Are you kidding . No. This is jay pickens. We do it all the way. If you have a pendant light or Something Like this at home, i painted this one to make it gray to match but maybe you want to paint it a funky color. I dont know. Get funky. So you say this is potentially for a bedroom. We can make our own drawer knobs and drawer knobs can be so expensive. Yes. Not anymore. Were talking pennies on this. So you need some gloves. You might have to set the mic down. Okay. Oh. Oh, no. Im just so manly, i just ripped through these gloves. Okay, so check this out. Safety goggles. Safety first. This is pretty cool. A lot of people get afraid when youre dealing with some sort of plastic. This is really simple twopart plastic. You pour it together. Oh wait, i got to put on my little science on. All right. There you go. You pour one into the other and put it into this is an ice mold. So you can buyhis mold for like 3 or 4. Little owls. Owls because theyre really cute. Have fun, right . So we can go ahead and pour it together then youll pour it into this mold. Mix together. Where am i getting this . Its going to get hot and start to get solid pretty fast. Youre good. You can just mix it. Mix it around. I feel like im doing a science project. Oh, yeah, were making pour it right in. Pour it right in. Once you get it to the top you can stop. This sits for how long . About four and a half minutes. Wow. In about 4 minutes you pull it out and it looks like that. Amazing. Thats pretty cool. And you can add color . And add color. This is rub and buff which is super awesome. And might not want to touch it. I have gloves on. You can put this on and, you know, kind of make it look like metal. Weve got a final product down here. Oh, yeah. This one i love. This one is super chic and super easy. Right. What do you think . Yeah. [ applause ] this is potentially for a bathroom towel bar. Yeah. What do you think about this one . But if you dont have a tool i love my tools a lot. If you dont have it, a knife works. Cut a strip. Put it all together, hang it up . Thats it. Good to go. Of course, this wont be the color because i know you love your purple. Purple is my color. We have this floral that is going to be kind of the main focus color. Okay. For the wedding. Reporter and jess showed them their picture perfect ceremony backdrop. There is one incredibly special place by the ocean where there is like a beautiful altar. Once we dress it up with the perfect florals and all of her friends and family, its going to be one of the most special moments. It was a beautiful site. The ocean background and one thing im looking forward to is seeing my wife walk down the island in her beautiful dress. Bobby and her matron of honor head to the spa for prewedding pamper while alonzo gets ready with best man brian. After the finishing touches from jess it was time to say i do. I love them so much. The first one has to do with scheduling. Yes, of course, plan ahead because thats when you will find the best travel deals, the best resort deals and its a courteous thing to do for your guests because they will ultimately be taking time off work and you want them there. Maybe not all of them. Most of them. I asked you for a secret tip while we were watching the piece, whether Destination Weddings can be cheaper than a wedding if you have one at home. You say absolutely. Particularly when it comes to package deal. So package deals, all inclusive resorts that are very expensive like alcohol, wedding planning. I know for mine the alcohol was a huge expense which probably says a lot about my friends but my wedding, as well. Also the wedding planners, that all comes included in your package so you dont have to worry about drink for drink or any of those little details. Its actually way more affordable. And those all really add up. You have quick tips on decor from flowers to even photos. Right. Okay, so flowers, i worked with many brides. They want to import their favorite flower. You know what, there are so many beautiful tropical flowers. Its less expensive, and also they can withstand the climate. So when you bring in flowers, sometimes weve seen, yeah, bad things happen so just stick to the tropical ones. Those flowers are gorgeous there. They were. Really pretty. [ applause ] and for photos, photography is so expensive also. So photography can be really expensive. What i suggest is have a photographer do your ceremony and then for the reception you have these disposable cameras all over the place and you make your guests, well, you give them a job. They are the ones that are going to photograph everything and its actually kind of fun. You see all of these different perspectives. I love it. Putting you guys to work. These are some tips.
