Federal prosecutors accuse disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein of witness tampering. Fallout over how his case was handled reaches the white house. It would be selfish for me to stay in this position. As presid his outgoing labor secretary. And courting history. Serena williams battles it out in the wimbledon championship. Its really not about 24, 23 or 25. The record shes going for, and the royal duo watching courtside. Hey. Good morning, everybody. Lets get straight to the major breaking news this morning. A massive and slowmoving storm hitting the gulf coast right now. Look at the satellite imagery. You can see the sheer size of this storm which has been named barry. The major concern here is flash flooding from the heavy rain and storm surge. Hurricane hunters flying into the storm. Amazing sight on camera. Take a look at the rainbow there, but dont be fooled. Barry poses a significant threat to the gulf coast. Already more than 50,000 customers without power. Thousands of people ordered to evacuate. There is a live look at whats happening right now in morgan city, louisiana which is in the path of the storm, and then of course, there were those perennial questions about whether the levees in new orleans will withstand another test. Rob is right there in new orleans kicking off our team coverage. Good morning to you, rob. Reporter good morning, eva. We are more confident this morning that these levees will not only hold, but are unlikely to be over top. The winds have switched just a little bit, and this river behind me because the winds have switched, wont get a whole lot higher. At least here in the city of new orleans, but the towns and parishes to our south, not so lucky. This morning, barry making landfall. Oh, dear. That dont look good. Reporter overnight, streets in grand isle, overtaking running rapids. Barry knocking out power for thousands on the island. The storm already packing winds over 60 miles per hour, violently swinging benches in the air. Shaking street signs, and battering traffic lights. Bottom line is stay off the street. Where are the police chief capturing the video of the main roadway. Five people were rescued from their car. In the air, air force Hurricane Hunters tracking the stto 10,00 exposed areas along the gulf told to leave. In new orleans, residents are told to shelter in place. Tourists out of town. Have you ever been through a hurricane . Yes. Two of them. Im from charleston. You dont have a feeling about sticking around for this one . No. When they say evacuate, you pretty much listen to that warning. So you get out. Reporter so are the Rolling Stones. The band postponing their show in new orleans until monday. And for the first time in history, all the citys floodgates are closed. I have never seen them close off the river like the barricades. Those floodgates. For the first time. Reporter heavy rain expected to fill low lying areas. Jefferson parish, the pumping capacity that can fill the superdome in 49 minutes. Were confident in the entire systems ability to withstand what Tropical Storm barry may bring us. Reporter but the mayor of morgan city telling abc news hes worried about barrys rainfall exceeding his citys pumping capacity. Thats what concerns us. Not the wind, not the storm surge, but we dont have the pumping capacity to handle 20 inches of rain if it comes at one time. Reporter boy, this storm is just crawling. The winds are picking up steadily, but rainfall has been pretty much nonexistent. We have had intermittent squalls. This is very much bottom heavy. That means the worst of the weather will come in after it makes landfall and after it gets abreast of any particular location. By about noontime, it will be around lafayette, the heart of akadian in a, and then around midnight tonight, through central louisiana, and alexandr alexandria, and northern louisiana during the day tomorrow and monday, through arkansas. With that path points to the east where most of the heavy rain will be too, and the winds and the surge. Hurricane warnings posted for the coastline. B baton rouge and new orleans, and that extends north of memphis, through mississippi and towards mobile, alabama and the Florida Panhandle getting hit already. Speaking of heavy rainfall, we expect 10 to 25 inches over the next couple of days. Tornadoes is an ongoing threat as this approaches. Eva . That whole region on alert. Rob, thank you. Abcs Zachary Kiesch is in morgan city, being called the storms bullseye. Zachary, what are the conditions there right now . Reporter eva, good morning to you. Were in morgan city, about 90 miles outside of new orleans where this thing could make landfall. We have been given these heavy gusts of wind. We have seen bands of rain. The power went out at the hotel this morning at about 3 30, but things arent all that bad right now. They are expected to deteriorate, however. This is the old downtown area. You can see some of these businesses have sandbags in front of them. Beyond the front wall, here is the river. You can see the basin is completely flooded, and the levels here are absolutely up. Its a combination of that, the rain were expecting and the surge that could cause real problems in this area. You have got to remember this is part of the country thats essentially an island. Its surrounded by bayous and rivers, and at some point, this water just wont have any place to go. Whit . Zachary kiesch for us in morgan city bracing for the storms impact. Thank you. Headquarters in washington is acting administrator pete gaynor. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Sometimes people can be lulled into a false sense of security when they hear Tropical Storm or category 1, but as our meteorologists have been pointing out, the wind threat is only part of this. This is a dangerous rain and flooding event. What are your biggest concerns as barry makes landfall . Yeah. I think you have it right, you know, dont worry about what category this is or whether its a Tropical Storm. Our main concern is that this is a rain event. 10 to 20 inches along the coast of louisiana. 25 inches in some locations. So flash flooding, and, you know, if you havent made preparations yet, its probably too late. Listen to your local officials. Stay off the road, stay inside and wait until you get the all clear. As our rob marciano mentioned, some of the worst rain will come behind the storm as well. T to mention this, ions spent totrenand reana. Th has been described as the first real test for that system since katrina. How confident are you that the levees will pass that test . Whit, were highly confident. The core of engineers is part of our team in the response coordination center. They have high confidence that the levees will perform as designed where they are monitored hour by hour to make sure we have no surprises. Pete, what kind of manpower and supplies do you have at the ready at the gulf coast, and how do you plan to deploy them . So we have our staff deployed throughout louisiana inside the louisiana mercy operations center. We have Mercy Communications prepositioned in the region. Were ready to go. We have plenty on hand and plenty in stock and warehouses shou we have been leaning forward to make sure were ready for anything that barry may bring. We know there are evacuations why the difference . Well, first of all, mercy management is locally executed, state managed and fairly supported. It starts at the local level. So please listen to your local mercy managers, your local Public Safety officials, and your local elected leaders. They know best. They made those decisions whether to evacuate or to shelter in place. Based on risk, and so listen to your local officials please. Pete gaynor, acting administrator for fema. Thank you so much for your time. We really appreciate it. Of course, were thinking about all those people in the storms path as barry makes landfall. Well have much more on barry in just a few minutes, including a at aotf. G e lst0 opn rouge. Killed in an attack in somalia. Abcs Stephanie Ramos has more from washington on this breaking story. Good morning to you, stephanie. Reporter eva, good morning. Officials say this happened in the somali city of kismayo. It started with a suicide car bombing at the entrance gate of a hotel, and then gunmen stormed the hotel. The attack lasted more than 14 hours, and ended when Somali Forces shot and killed all the attackers inside that hotel compound. In addition to the two americans killed, kenyans, tanzanians, a canadian and a brit also died. Al shabaab is claiming responsibility for the attack. Dan . Stephanie, thank you. Back here at home, what could be an Inflection Point in americas divisive fight over immigration, some communities bracing for i. C. E. Raids overnight. Protesters hitting the streets. Meanwhile, Vice President mike pence personally visiting a Migrant Detention Center along the border in the midst of an outcry over alleged inhumane conditions. Abcs david wright has more from the white house. David, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. Immigrant communities across the cotrarbrinfor ose ras. President trump said that they are likely to take place tomorrow and that they will be focused as much as possible on rounding up criminals, but at a moment when the immigration debate here in washington is fierce, this represents an escalation. [ chanting ] this weekend in cities across the country, protests against i. C. E. Raids. If theyre not doing any arm and theyre not doing anything in the streets, theyre not breaking any laws, why should they get deported . Especially if they have kids. Reporter i. C. E. Has set plans to target 2,000 migrants on a deportation list. They are told to shelter in place and try to evade authorities throughout the weekend. Vice president mike pence toured a Detention Center in texas praising the work of the Border Patrol. I must tell you that different from what we hear from many of the critics, i couldnt be more impressed with the compassionate work that our customs and Border Protection are doing here at this facility. Reporter reporters got a glimpse of the conditions there. The men lablankets to keep warm, all of them clearly eager to get out. We are not a terrorist. Reporter the Vice President also met with children at the Detention Center. Many of them lying on mats on the floor. The Vice President suggested that democratic members of congress have exaggerated the poor conditions that they witnessed at a different center. The time has come to stop the irresponsible rhetoric about the way that people are being cared for and treated, who are being detained in our facilities. Reporter but the democrats insist they saw what they saw, and documented what they could even after the Border Patrol seized the i pressed my hand to a plexiglas window. I met the gazes of several women on the other side. Their shoulders were slumped, their clothes filthy, their eyes vacant. Reporter congresswomen fought back tears during the testimony. Imagine traveling thousands of miles in grueling and dangerous conditions because you have no other option only to be separated from your family, from your children, thrown into overcrowded cages, denied a shower, toothbrush and yes, mr. Chairman, drink water out of a toilet. I believed them when they said they were sleeping on concrete floors for two months. I believe them. Reporter but acting i. C. E. Director took issue with that. This isnt just about enforcing law. This is about saving lives. Reporter that hearing comes as another House Committee released a new report on 2,000 children separated from their parents at the border, including at least 18 infants and toddlers. According to that report, 50 children were held for six months to a year, and 25 children were held for more than a year. This debate, dan, far from over. Absolutely. David, let me just follow up with a couple of questions here. What do we know about when and where these i. C. E. Raids will take place this weekend . And following up on that, what about these democrats coaching people on how to resist . Reporter according to the president , the raids will take place in about ten cities across the country. Were not sure exactly which ones and theyre likely to take place tomorrow. As for the democrats, they have been telling people that an i. C. E. Warrant is not the same as a search warrant, and theyre saying, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying that unless there is a judges signature on that warrant, people are not obliged to open the door, dan. David wright at the white hankouermu eva, over to you. Now to federal prosecutors fighting against billionaire Jeffrey Epstein being let out on bail. They claim the financier has been paying off potential witnesses. Reporter this morning, new developments in the case against disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Federal prosecutors claimed epstein paid individuals last year who might be witnesses against him at a future trial. After the publication of a newspaper story alleging he sexually abused underaged girls. Arguing against bail friday, he is accused of witness tampering saying he wired 350,000 to two potential witnesses. Prosecutors saying, this course of action and in particular, its timing suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence coconspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recent reemerging allegations. Abc news has also learned that dozens of new accusers have come forward with allegations in recent days. I was not a fan of Jeffrey Epstein, and you watched people yesterday say that i threw him out of a club. I didnt want anything to do with him. That was many, many years ago. Reporter the fallout from epsteins case reached the white house friday. Labor secretary Alexander Acosta resigning his cabinet position after acosta faced mounting pressure for his role in negotiating a controversial plea deal with epstein as u. S. Attorney in florida more than a decade ago. It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case thats 12 years old. Reporter President Trump accepting the resignation while praising acosta. This was him, not me because im with him. He was a hes a tremendous talent. Hes a hispanic man. He went to harvard, a great student. Now if convicted, epstein could face up to 45 years in prison. Extraordinary case. The fallout continues from that plea deal. Eva, thank you. Abcs Clayton Sandell is on the story from our l. A. Bureau. Clayton, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. This morning, the governor has declared this as a disaster area following those two brush fires. One fire starting thursday on land used to grow sugar cane, and forcing at least 2,000 people from their homes. One of those homeowners there is oprah winfrey. She tweeted she opened up a road on her property for evacuees and emergency workers to use. That fire is now about 70 contained, but has burnt around 10,000 acres. As firefighters got a handle on that fire on friday, another blaze broke out, this one near several big box stores. Officials say at least one fire may be a case of arson. Maui police saying theyre looking into a truck seen yesterday leaving the area of that second fire. Eva . All right. Thanks, clayton. Time now for weather. Lets go back to rob who is in new orleans where they are feeling barrys strength. Good morning to you, rob. Good morning again, eva. As we mentioned, most of the rainfall is to the south as this thing comes out. Well get it and get it for days. Here it is again on the satellite picture. A bottom heavy storm, and were getting the winds picking up here in nola as it makes its way on shore. The storms surge is still going to be significant. Obviously in the most lowlying areas at the mouth of the mississippi where storm surge warnings are 3 to 6 feet of water. Hopefully the levees down there will hold, but i think a lot of them will be over top, and evacuations are now in place. Many people have gotten their way out. Timing this system, you see it go on shore, and through lafayette, right around alexandria. Torrential rains then in new orleans, baton rouge, getting up to monroe as we go up through tomorrow morning. Look at this fire hose of moisture, pointing its way at the mouth of the mississippi, and pouring into Mississippi State as well, up through arkansas, memphis will be in this too. Bay ammingntlouisiana with torrential rain, high winds and dangerous storm surge. Up to 6 feet in some places, and major lifethreatening flash flooding is also expected along the coast. Were taking a live look there at new orleans right now. Abcs alex perez is there from baton rouge where they could see up to 2 feet of rain. Good morning to you, alex. Reporter good morning, eva. The torrential rains and floods of 2016 are still fresh on the minds of a lot of people here in baton rouge. I want you to take a look behind me here. You can see this tree. The wind is already picking up here. This is the mississippi river. A lot of people here have spent the week sandbagging, trying to do whatever they can to protect their homes. They are bracing as you said, for about 2 feet of rain, and the problem here is going to be the same problem across the state this weekend, that this storm is going to linger and like rivers. They are anxious. They remember their homes being destroyed. They are ready forarry to move er a right, f rlr isor american red cross. Thank you for joining us this morning. If you could start with kind of what you guys are doing now in advance of the storm. Well, one of the first things that were doing is really encouraging everyone to heed those evacuation warnings to make sure they have taken steps to prepare hopefully in the days before now, before the storm kind of makes landfall, to shelter in place if need be also. To have that three days food and water sort of thing. The red cross honestly today is ensuring the safety of our work force, making sure our volunteers that are here to help are as safe as possible. We have multiple Evacuation Centers open across the state. Those will become more. We will move people to, depending on the situation, ce t s term, full on shelters wn iteces aarent wh the need is, and where its safe to do so. With a storm like this, the big concern is this rain event, and that could happen days after the storm has moved through. How do you guys prepare for that differently . Well, its being ready, working with our partners to identify what the needs are, to identify, you know, where that flooding might occur and how we can position ourselves to have shelter locations, food, eventually relief items that we can distribute as close to those areas as they can, while still keeping the public, and our work force safe. Its working with those people, those emergency officials to make sure that were as wellpositioned as we possibly can be. All right. Jay bonafede with the red cross. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. Always worried ab. During katrina, every time you see a stormoving in at his n thhis e ming in. Iv alrdy lets get back to rob marciano who is in new orleans tracking barry, but also the national forecast, and whats happening in the weather department. Rob, good morning once again. Hi, whit. They are prepared. The red cross, national guard, this city, since katrina, what they have done in preparation and upgrades is really impressive. This river is the lifeline of this city, and its a doubleedged sword. Were confident this morning because the winds have switched a little bit, that the river will stay within the banks of the levee system, but as we mentioned earlier, downstream, and folks of the south are in it a bit worse. Where the storm is, the Southeast Quadrant of the storm, here it is on the satellite composite. We have heavy rain over toward biloxi, mobile, alabama. We have big waves rolling in through there, and once they get abreast of your location, thats where it will hit, as far as the heaviest rain and wind. Timing it out, lafayette getting up through it, and northern louisiana. Not really until sunday late, and into arkansas. Very slow mover, and thats why were so concerned about the rainfall issues with this, and why flash flood watches have been posted for so many states all the way up through memphis, tennessee. The entire state of mississippi, to the Florida Panhandle. We have the hurricane warnings up to 10 to 20 inches, 25 inches of rain in some pockets and could see 6 inches of rainfall in new orleans, and up towards memphis. What alex perez pointed out, so important to note, this part of the world is susceptible to flooding. Very flat, and you dont even need a named storm to get torrential and tropical downpours and potential good saturday morning. In todays weekend download, how healthy is that glass of fruit juice that you drink in the morning . Sugary drinks being linked to cancer is the focus of a new study, and joining us to talk about it is dr. Jen ashton. Dr. Ashton, thanks so much for joining us as always. Hi, whit. I want to ask you first. What are the Key Takeaways here from this new study . Let me tell you the headline first of all. It appeared in a reputable journal, the british medical journal. It looked at over 100,000 people, and followed them over five years, associated by survey, and found there was an 18 higher rate of overall cancer among people who drank any sugary beverage. Let me give you the story behind the headline. This is a perfect example of a study based on association, not cause and effect. The methodology here was based on participants surveys, so remembering what they drank, which has some issues in terms of its validity, and this finding, this association, is kind of like saying, well, if you are wearing a yellow shirt, you have an increased chance that you may be breathing. So you have to make this with not just a chunk of salt, but a chunk of sugar. Got it, but the big question people ask, does this mean we should ditch that morning glass of juice altogether . Absolutely not. Lets take this back to biochemistry. Our cells run on glucose. The issue as you probably know is that we as a society are getting too much added sugar, and that is contributing to weight gain and obesity which absolutely are linked to cancer, but if someones going to hand me a glass of fresh orange juice, im going to accept it. You just have to realize when you talk about these added sugars in a lot of sweet beverages, for the most part, we call them very caloriedense, nutrient poor, and thats not ideal. So that added sugar is the key there. The American Beverage Association says that its this is a quote here. Its important for people to know that all beverages either with sugar or without are safe to consume as part of a balanced diet. What are your thoughts on that assessment . So whit, you know that i have a degree if nutrition also, and i think balance is important. Everything in moderation is important, but the take home point for people, read those labels. The maximum amount of added sugar for teenagers and women is 25 grams a day. For men, its 36 grams a day. If you turn things around, you could get almost 20 grams in that greek yogurt youre having, and were getting way too much. So yes, in moderation, but yes we also need to watch the added sugar. Moderation. Dr. Ashton, always great to see you. Thanks so much for this important information. We appreciate it. Thanks.
