Happy weekend. Lets get right to our top story. President trump touching down in south korea just a short while ago after having extended an apparently impromptu highstakes twitter invitation to the leader of north korea. Trump inviting kim jongun to come meet him later today for a handshake at the dmz, the border between north and south korea. The question, though, will kim show up and if not, is it a major diplomatic snuff . Overnight the president left japan where he was attending the g20 summit. He had a crucial meeting with the leader of china as the two countries teeter on the edge of a trade war. He also commented on the democratic president ial debates. Abcs chief White House Correspondent jon karl starts us off from japan. Reporter good morning, eva. After his meetings with a series of World Leaders at the g20 in japan, the president held a remarkable press conference here that lasted for well over an hour. Questions on a wide range of topics including his potential meeting with kim jongun. President trump seems to think kim jongun just might accept u kim, and well find out. Reporter the president had extended the invitation on twitter just hours earlier. It might happen tomorrow, i mean to be honest. We wont call it a summit. Well call it a handshake. Reporter and if it doesnt happen . Will it be a bad design if he doesnt show up . Of course, i thought of that. If he doesnt, everybody will say, he was stood up by chairman kim. No, i understood that. Its very hard to he follows my twitter. Reporter he does . And its very hard yeah, i goes so because we got a call very quickly. Reporter the president said he would even be willing to make the symbolic gesture of stepping onto north korean soil. Something no other u. S. President has ever done. Sure, i would. Id feel very comfortable doing reporter ohihighstas meeting with the president of trksonnu we a great meeting ae will be continuing to negotiate and i promised that for at least the time being were not going to be lifting tariffs on china. We wont be adding an additional, you know, tremendous amount of we have i guess 350 billion left which could be taxed or could be tariffed, and were not doing that. Reporter a chinese reporter asked if he thinks china is a strategic partner, a competitor or an enemy. I think were going to be strategic partners. I think we can help each other. I think in the end we can if the right deal is structured, we can be great for each other. If china would open up, youre opening up a tremendous, you know, the largest market in the world, and right now china is not open to the United States, but were open to china. Hesithworld, t prident was eping an eye on im between joe biden and Kamala Harris. I did. Reporter on the issue of federal busing. Well, first of all, before i get into that, i thought that she was given too much credit. He didnt do well certainly and maybe the facts werent necessarily on his side. I think she was given too much credit for what she did. Reporter if the president has a meeting with kim jongun in the demilitarized zone, it would likely be a very short one. He suggested a handshake, but he also made it clear he is open to a third full summit with kim. Whit. All right. Well see if that happens. Jon karl reporting from japan, thank you. Meantime, here at home biden was doing damage control defending his civil rights record as some of the other democratic president ial candidates were back on the campaign trail just hours after battling it out on the debate stage. Abcs rachel scott is in chicago where biden spoke yesterday. Rachel, good morning to you. Reporter whit, good morning. Joe biden seems ready for a doover. He said 30 to 60 seconds on that debate stage just simply wasnt enough time for him to explain his decades long record on civil rights. The question now, will black voters cut him any slack . Joe biden unapologetic and on the defensive. I never, never, never, ever opposed voluntary busing, and as a program that senator harris participated in, and it made a difference in her life. Reporter the former vp on stage at Jesse JacksonsRainbow Push Coalition attempted to limit the bruising from this debate blow. There was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day, and that little girl was me. Reporter senator Kamala Harris got personal and criticized biden for once opposing mandatory busing of students to desegregate public schools. Biden fresh off the debate stage explained his record to a largely africanamerican crowd in chicago. Ive always been in favor of using federal authorities to overcome state initiated segregation. Reporter and as for his debate performance, i asked biden walking here with jackson. Vice president , how would you rate your performance last night . Ill let other people rate me. Reporter some black voters were disappointed. He looked quite frail. His answers were quite defensive. Reporter others conflicted but not ready to give up on him just yet. We need a man to beat donald trump, and if we beat joe biden up it leaves your mind open to think about somebody else. Reporter senator Elizabeth Warren also touched down in chicago hoping its her message that breaks through. Are you ready for some big change . Are you ready for some big structural change . Mo fieldakingothers in the an extra day ioi . Es standing together at the homestead migrant detention facility sending a unified message to the Trump Administration. When the Trump Administration overlooks the fact that what is happening with the detention of these children, the circumstances by which they arrived is a human rights abuse being committed by the United States government. And rachel scott is now back with us from chicago. Rachel, during that debate, senator harris raised her hand in support of abolishing private Health Insurance in favor of a government plan, but shes now clarifying that position and, rachel, shes had to do this before, right . Reporter exactly, whit. Senator harris said she misunderstood that question but its not the first time that she has sent mixed signals on the issue. Now she says she supports medicare for all with private insurance providing supplemental coverage. Whit. Rachel scott in chicago, thanks so much. Dan, over to you. A moment that could haunt her going forward. A lot to talk about here this morning, so lets bring in our ringer, abc news chief political analyst matthew dowd who joins us from texas. Matthew, good morning, sir. Lets start with joe biden playing cleanup after the debate. Do you think hes put this whole busing story behind him or does he still have work to do here . You know, dan, we talked about last saturday, i dont think its the specific story thats the problem and he hasnt fully cleaned it up yet because he doesnt have a good explanation of it. Its the fact is joe biden trapped in another time and doesnt fit the 21st Century Democratic Party and the candidate tass are going to take on donald trump seems to be somebody who wants to harken back to the 1950s, do the democrats want to nominate a candidate who seems to harken back to the 1970s and 1980s. Is a candidate that wants to go back to the 80s the candidate to beat that wants to go back to the 50s and thats joe bidens biggest vulnerability. Does he fit the 21st century democrats a lot of people have been picking up on the fact he repeatedly during the course of the debate the other night said, my time is up and people are saying his critics are, in fact saying his time is up. Lets loop back to President Trump. We got that report from jon karl at the top of the show who is on the ground in japan. Trump is now on the ground in south korea. He extended that twitter invite to kim jongun to come meet him at the dmz today. Do you view that invite as savvy or risky . Its a bit of social media dating, it feels like to me. I dont know if its either savvy or risky. I mean, i think donald trump is untraditional in almost everything hes done. Its an interesting way to sort of engage with a leader that we view as an adversary in this who seems to be building Missile Systems in this, so i think its donald trump as weve seen him. I dont think it changes peoples perception of donald trump. Its just a what it would be normally would be a bizarre way to engage a foreign leader but were very used to the nontraditional donald trump over the last 2 1 2 years. Well see how it goes today and well talk about it either way tomorrow morning. Matthew dowd, thanks for your analysis on a saturday morning. Really appreciate it. Whit, over to you. Dan, thanks. Turning to a border wall roadblock for the Trump Administration, a federal judge barred the plan to siphon 2. 5 billion in military funds to build segments of a wall along the u. S. mexico border. The judge in california ruled in favor of two lawsuits contending the Money Transfer was unlawful and the wall would pose environmental threats. The president plans to appeal that decision. Theyre citing two sources familiar with the investigation. Now, its unclear, though, if this is an expansion of the ongoing doj criminal investigation into boeings design of the 737 max after two deadly crashes or a separate move. Boeing has said the charleston plant did have some issues early on but that they have been fixed. The company has been asked for comments about this new Seattle Times report, and boeing says they do not comment on legal matters. Today lots to love about summer, obviously. But it does bring out the creepy crawlies. I recently spoke with our chief Health Correspondent dr. Jen ashton about how to beat the bugs. Lets start with the prototypical summer annoyance, mosquitoes. Mosquitoes, everyone gets affected by this. This is considered actually to be the most dangerous animal in the world. We have to remember that in other parts of the world malaria, zika, literally mosquitoes can carry infections that can be deadly. Not so much of an issue here, thank goodness, but they can be problematic. A lot of people get a big histamine reaction, a lot of swelling and itching obviously after a mosquito bite so basics there. Just apply ice, wash the area, put some benadryl gel and antihistamine gel on it if its really getting swollen. And dont pick or scratch it. Thats when you can increase the risk of getting whats called a super infection. Lets talk about bees. What do you do about bee stings . So the first thing is, remove the stinger, and you have to do that properly or you can actually spread some of that venom and toxin so just with your fingernail or gauze, then wash the area with soap and water. And make sure you keep it clean. Ice is going to be key. If someone is having any swelling around their mouth or difficulty breathing, obviously there is a concern for an anaphylactic or severe allergic reaction. Then you want to get them to the emergency room. And get the epipen out. Then there are ticks, which are also very dangerous. And you know what, dan, tickborne illness presents a major Health Illness in this country. The good news is most who are bitten by a tick do not get sick. You want to think of two things. Number one, what, if any, symptoms youre having. Usually were talking about a rash although not everyone who gets bitten by a tick will get a rash. Fever, chills, body aches or pains and then where in the country youre located because, again, that will help people determine what type of infection youre looking for. Why didnt you bring visual aids . Why dont we have ticks or mosquitoes . You do bring up a good point. A lot of people will remove a tick, put it in a bag. That can be helpful not to test that tick for disease but to show it to someone to help you figure out whether you need to be worried. Ill bring my next one to work. Thank you, jen. Appreciate it.
