The installation starts at 7 00 this morning. There then will be a commemoration ceremony with elected officials and the San Francisco lesbian and gay freedom band at 10 30. It is the 27th annual dike march starting at delores park. It seeks to bring lgbtq people together to celebrate unity and raise consciousness about the community. The rally starts at 11 00 and march at 5 00. Organizers expect tens of thousands of people to take part in the festivities. The pride celebrations kicked off last night with the 15th annual trans march. Thousands of people took to the streets of San Francisco from delores park to market street. The is ath annual trans march kicked off with rainbow flags and outfits worn by more than 6,000 people, adorning our city from delores mark to market street. It means i get to come together with my community and see the people that support our community. Reporter jenny has been a transgender woman for three years. For her it was a dream come true. I came out a few years ago after having a neardeath experience. Reporter in the crowd, different faces and stories. I have a family thats not as supportive, so to know that people are out there who want to love you at a familiar level is really nice to know. Reporter for andrew martinez, marching meant freedom after fleeing mexico in fear for her life. It is more dangerous over there, more danger because theres not much human rights as we have here. Reporter alice clark and her church gave out hugs and told many they were loved. People that come for a hug say thank you, thank you so much, and the hugs go on for a while. I think they really are more nourishing that way. Reporter at hamburger marys drag queens reminded the crowd that pride for them is everyday. This is our life. In the south bay a fouralarm fire devoured a condominium complex under construction in santa clara, sending workers running for their lives. Abc 7 News Reporter amanda del castillo has the details. Reporter just a few hundred feet away from massive flames and heavy, dark smoke, witness video captures the intensity behind fridays fouralarm fire. I will say it is not taking a minute to spread the fire very quick. Reporter boses bus niece took a hit, his windows cracked across the street from the construction site. Plastic parts on one car parked nearby appeared melted and more. What would have been a mix of 58 affordable and marketrate condos, consumed by fire damage. One worker at the site was injured in their escape. Others recalled what happened moments before running for their lives. I thought somebody had a torch or Something Real close to me because it felt like a lot of heat. I got scared and i looked up and there was a fire in the corner of the building. Flames produced such intense heat surrounding structures started to smoke. Ten homes were temporarily evacuated. Some residents even grabbed garden hoses to keep the fire at a distance. Others did what they could to alert neighbors. This location, it is squeezed in here pretty tight and theres a lot of Residential Property here with older residents. They were knocking on doors, getting people out. Reporter three dozen firefighters were on hand. Atf investigators also responded. The fire was contained around 2 00 p. M. , though crews stayed on scene to monitor hot spots. The heat was unbelievable, and then it just took off into the sky and obviously developed into this unfortunate occurrence. Reporter at one point a person of interest was detained by Santa Clara Police for questioning, but we learned that person has since been released. Now, Santa Clara Police tell me that until santa clara fire says it is a safe scene, no investigators have been able to access the site. So well have to wait for that. Reporter telling his story, Andy Damian Corea took us back to his native mexico where being different in a small town was terrifying. They tarpted, you know, attacking, saying things in spanish about my sexual orientation. Reporter even his parents were not accepting of the life he wanted to have. Mom, dad, im gay. My mama started crying. Reporter he says his father wanted to change him, physically abusing him. A few times, but i forgive him. His b in his early 20s. He received a scholarship to study Hotel Management in washington, d. C. Just seeing people happy and coming here and seeing different kind of gays, all color, all flavors. Reporter and he knew he could never return to his town in mexico. His friends reassured him. No, absolutely not, you should not come here. There is no future for us. Reporter after moving to San Francisco, he applied for asylum. He told an Immigration Court about an affair he had with someone high in the ranks of the Mexican Police who hid his sexual orientation. Obviously he didnt want to say he was gay. He has kids. Hes gonna kill me. Reporter when the immigration judge welcomed him to america he knew he had won his case. He has never been back. His mother still calls him to ask if he is dating. Girls. His father has accepted andys life as a gay man. Reporter but you are studying journalism now. Right. I tried to change my career. Has been in hospitality for, like, 14 years, and it is never too late, right . Reporter i asked one last question. What pride now meant to him. Pride means be happy and just keep in mind that 50 years ago people fought very hard for where i am right now. So i have to embrace that, my freedom, so i am able to be just free and happy. The photographs are raw and passionate and for a time they were actually kept from public view. Abc 7 news anchor dan ashley has the details. Reporter the photographs being exhibited in San Franciscos Museo Italo Americano are known as neorealist, but some are so real they had to be hidden from the public as fascism swept through italy in the 1930s. Photographs of impoverished children were replaced by images of the dictator mussolini greeting mothers with healthy newborns. It was ironic that the dictator was using photography as a means of propaganda. At the same time he wasnt realizing that the photographs were actually documenting, you know, the real life. Reporter bianca is the curator of the new image in italy. It is a breathtaking sweep as fascism gives way to postwar devastation and the struggle to rebuild a modern italy. I can only imagine how hard and rough it was at that time, but youre right. The photographer at the same time captured the strength and the resilience of these workers.
