At least six people on board worked for that skydiving company. They worked in this community. They lived in this community, and their loss has rocked this island. Overnight, the heart of a community shattered on oahus north shore after 11 people tdid in this plane crash. That fateful skydiving flight at sunset ending in a ball of flames just after takeoff. We see the plane do a turnaround from the mountains right there flying at a pretty low altitude. It starts to flip or reverse as it starts to kind of decline, decline, decline, and then it kind of skimmed off those trees and it smashed down to the floor onto right up against that fence. Good morning, tara. Reporter good morning, eva. Those candidates played nice with each other this weekend even as they tried to stand out from a crowd of more than 20. Instead, they saved their attacks for President Trump. Well make it to the mountain top reporter on the campaign trail, 2020 Democratic Candidates fired up after President Donald Trump delayed mass raids across the country set to take place this morning, all part of a plan to deport more than 2,000 undocumented immigrants in as many as ten cities. Everybody that came into the country illegally will be brought out of the country very legally. Reporter senator Bernie Sanders briefly praising the president for calling off the raids. Im glad that trump made this decision, but thats not good enough. What we need to do is move toward real immigration reform. Reporter meanwhile, mayor Pete Buttigieg back in South Carolina after pausing his campaign to address the Community Crisis in south bend. A Fatal Shooting of a black man by a white Police Officer. [ chanting ] protestors demanding answers. Did you ask me if black lives matter . We want to hear you say it of course black lives matter. Then fire your cops reporter buttigieg says hes not worried about the message it sends to black voters. Mayor pete. Hi. Are you worried about how the protests at home are playing in South Carolina, especially among africanamerican voters . Its not really something to think about in terms of politics. Its something we think about in terms of community. Im extremely concerned about the anguish that our community is feeling and well continue to work through it together, but i also think that we can take an extremely difficult moment and show the best of our community and how we respond to it. Reporter mayor pete is back off the campaign trail today. Hes heading home to south bend to hold a town hall with members of his own community as they deal with this crisis. Dan . And then another shooting overnight. A lot going on with mayor Pete Buttigieg. Tara, thank you very much. A lot to talk about here this morning so lets bring in our chief Foreign Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz whos in washington d. C. Where shell be hosting this week later this morning. Martha, good morning to you. I think the big news in the democratic race this week is likely to be the first televised debates which theyre going to hold over two nights because there are so many candidates. You know very well what a crowded debate stage is like. Back in 2016 you and abcs david muir moderated a large group of republicans including then candidate donald trump. For the democrats, when you have all these candidates up there, how can anybody stand out . Reporter well, i think the one thing they have to do is remember why they want to be president of the united states. Stick to their message. Stick to why they think theyre better than any other candidate and say that again and again. On the other hand, you dont want to get too married to your talking points. I remember marco rubio making talking points over and over again to the point Chris Christie interjected, and Chris Christie really ruled that debate because he pointed out that marco rubio was saying the same thing over and over again. So there are always these moments in debates. Theres always something, but i really do think you just, as a candidate, have to remember why youre there, why you want to be president , and youll stand out in that way. Its going to be tough. So lets loop back to iran, speaking of tough. President trump is simultaneously extending an olive branch. We saw him talking about making iran great again, while also announcing these new sanctions overnight, but iran has shown no appetite for talking. So where do we go from here . You know hes going to put on stronger sanctions. I think we dont know, dan, where it goes from here. This crisis is far from over. The immediate crisis was over. There was no military strike, but what if Something Else happens . And i know we say this again and again but the big danger is miscalculation, something goes wrong, somebody does take a rogue shot at something and then what does President Trump do . Does he once again say im not going to do a military strike . We lost a 130 million drone. The president clearly concerned about civilian casualties. This cyberattack, does that do it . This offensive cyberattack against iran that the president authorized . But i think at this point we just dont know whats going to happen. As you said, so much room for misral cuelati miscalculation, and the stakes are incredibly high. Martha, thank you very much. I want to remind everybody marthas got a big show this morning. Shes going to go oneonone with president ial candidate, senator cory booker from new jersey. Plus former joint chiefs of staff chairman admiral mike mullin discussing the escalating tensions between the u. S. And iran. Thats all coming up on this week later this morning right here on abc. Whit, over to you. Dan, thank you. A dramatic rescue in st. Louis as an officer saves a toddler from her burning home. Take a look. Hazelwood Police Officer rodriguez can be seen kicking in a basement window after he says he heard cries for help. Everything inside the house was destroyed. Time now for a check of the weather. Lets go back to rob in times square. Good morning to you, rob. Hi, good morning again, eva. I cant even imagine what the wallendas are going to feel like as they do the big stunt. Theyll talk more about that in a bit. First, a bit of a stunt yesterday. You saw the first full day of summer. We were getting puked on with heavy snow in breckenridge, colorado. This is what the snow state looked like earlier in steamboat springs. Theyre shut down for skiing but look at that. Over a foot of fresh powder yesterday. Im sure folks were loving that, cutting fresh turns. The cold core is still there. Winter weather advisories remain up for that area including the front rage and summit county, including breckenridge and aspen. Two to six inches of snow there or more in wyoming. Look at how the temperatures will swing from denver, mid to upper 50s, getting into the mid 80s by wednesday. Salt lake 70s, getting to 90 by tuesday. There you see the dramatic warmup. Kansas city will get up into the 90s well, tuesday and wednesday. High above the crossroads of the world 25 stories up, thats where theyre going to be walking. The brother sister act will cross paths later on tonight as millions watch here and around the world. Will these blue skies hold . Will the winds be calm . Well talk more about the forecast in the next halfhour. Rob, speaking of dan harris, id love to see you up there. Thats never going to happen. Yes, fear is a factor for me. You used a term before that i had never heard from a meteorologist. You talked about being snowed on in colorado as being puked on. Is that because you have a little baby around the house, youre puked on all the time . Yeah, exactly. At this point i think puking is a good thing, especially when it comes to snow. Not everybody feels that way. No. A little powder puke never hurt anybody. Thank you, robert. Appreciate it. Moving on, a major step towards recovery for former red sox star david ortiz. His team revealing ortiz has been moved out of intensive care at massachusetts general hospital. Doctors say he is in Good Condition after being shot in the back while in the dominican republic. Authorities now think the shooting was a case of mistaken identity. Its the oneyear anniversary of that rescue mission to save a Young Soccer Team from a cave in northern thailand. I cant believe its already been a year. I know. Incredible. Flew by. It did. What do you have going on this morning . Weve been talking a lot about the u. S. The ntsb looking into why a skydiving plane went down killing all 11 people on board, making it hawaiis deadliest crash since 1981. The faa revealing that the same plane almost crashed in 2016, experiencing serious damage. The question now, was that a factor in this crash . Meantime, loved ones are remembering the 11 victims killed when the plane came down just after takeoff. Thats a terrible story and a lot of questions this morning. Were going to start, however, this halfhour with some terrifying moments at a festival in missouri. Look at this, people scrambling when they see a hot air balloon heading straight at them. Abcs will reeve joins us with the story this morning. Will, good morning to you. Reporter dan, a nightmare scenario in a town on the banks of the Mississippi River celebrating its 200th year of existence. A hot air balloon out of control, heading right for spectators, near disaster, and it was all caught on camera. This is the heartstopping moment a hot air balloon with passengers aboard comes crashing down. And they were struck by what . They were struck by one of the balloons. Reporter it happened at the hannibal bicentennial celebration in missouri. Watch as the balloon loses control attempting to land. Its basket swept into the ground before barrelling through a crowd of spectators. Oh, my god reporter as the balloon gets closer, you can see one of the passengers trying to steer. Then suddenly it drops, hitting a tree, then the grass. It started dropping, like, really slow. It just scraped, hit a tree. Coming down, uhoh. Uhoh, and he went right into the crowd. Reporter witnesses reporting only minor injuries after the harrowing incident. It was pretty rough. They were trying to grab the baskets and the baskets were kind of falling onto the people. Trying to get it steady. It seemed pretty sloppy, yeah. Reporter this isnt the first close call for hot air balloons. Back in 2017, passengers aboard this balloon making a water landing in orange county, florida, and just last year the frightening moment this balloon collided with some power lines in howell, michigan. Whoa. The hannibal bicentennial released a statement about the incident saying in part the person flying the balloon was an experienced balloonist and that thankfully there were no injuries and the event continued. I like the stories with no injuries. Yes. Everyones okay. Good video. Move it along. Good to know. Thank you, sir. Will, thank you. We do want to turn now to the bizarre situation at the state house in oregon. I. A. , hiding out to protest a three days. Reporter this morning, all of oregons 11 republican state senators are missing in action, some leaving the state entirely to avoid troopers who have been ordered by the governor to get them back to the statehouse. If you dont thi if you dont think these boots are for walking, youre flat wrong, mr. President. And you send the state police to get me . Hell is coming to visit you personally. We have avoided being within the state boundaries where the governor can exercise at her prerogative the state troopers to call us back to the state capitol. Reporter the republican state senators oppose a Climate Change bill, but dont have enough votes to kill it. Instead, they are trying to run out the clock until the session ends one week from today. One speaking to abc news from a secret location. I am doing the work of my constituents by avoiding saddling all oregonians with this horrid piece of legislation. Reporter now with legislative work at a standstill, the Democratic Senate president making an emotional plea to end the stalemate. This is the saddest day of my legislative life. Im begging you to come back. Reporter the walkout over Climate Change putting more than 100 bills in jeopardy since no votes can be made. Oregons democratic governor create brown is furious. Senate republicans failed to of show up and failed to do their jobs. The senators face a fine of 500 for each day theyre missing. We should also point out democrats pulled a similar move back in 2001 staging a fiveday walkout over redistricting. That was when republicans had the majority. Now the reverse happening. Just another example of the partisan divide in this country, creating more gridlock even at the state level. Democracy at work. Unfortunately in this situation, yes. Sometimes the sausages get made in ugly fashion. Whit, thank you very much. Lets get it out to times square yet again and rob marciano who is we dont have any big weather in times square, but we do have a big live event this evening. Rob, whats going on . Corey scott, one of the prosecutions key witnesses, testifying, i saw gallagher stab him in the neck. Then telling the jury he, not gallagher, killed the prisoner by blocking his airway, saying it was an act of mercy to keep the teenager from later being tortured by iraqi forces. The navy saying the testimony has no impact on the trial, telling abc news the government will not be dropping premeditated murder charges against chief petty officer gallagher despite petty officer scotts testimony.
