One of the most important events in lgbtq history has taken place right outside twin peaks tavern, but none of those events were more important than what the bar owners did nearly 50 years ago with its large windows. Take a look. A lot of people that came in here were taking a risk, but yet it was time to stop hiding. Before this bar opened all of the gay bars in alleys or the here, we dont mind being e seen. Yes. This is my favorite bar ever. Im a regular here and i love it. Coming out of the closet to the Gay Community was something that individuals would do, but it was the first time that the bar itself was out, which meant that the people that went to the bar was also outing themselves because anybody could walk by, look through the windows and see who was in there. It really was a pioneering move of the two women, Peggy Forster and mary ellen cunha, who opened the bar in 1972, to take the paint off the windows, to expose the customers inside and so the customers can see outside. At that point it was a really big deal. It was the first time we know of that a gay bar purposely opened their windows to be seen, and at a time when just being known to be gay meant you could lose your job. It was a risk for the bar itself, so they had a notouch policy and kept everyone on their better behaviors. There are other bars in the neighborhood that cruising was more prevalent, whereas here it was a social place. Just people were more behaved, more community oriented. The bar hasnt changed that much. We are like at the epi the Gay Community. A lot has happened out here right out through the windows. In 1989 when i started working here at the twin peaks, the aids crisis was in full swing. Sadly, every bartender that i worked with passed away from aids. People would come here for information to share. Also, a lot of Memorial Services were held here. When they approved gay marriage, then everybody would gather in the castro area. There was literally dancing in the streets. Its definitely a window of the world. We identify as a gay bar, but as time has gone on and we have evolved into an everybody is welcome bar. It is the very first bar that i actually stumbled into that the bartender remembered my name. The sense of community here is contagious. For many of us, this is really our living room. I dont entertain people at home. I come here to miends. Tile. E oeo flroo come and see the bar and to be in the bar and be a part of history still in the making. A documentary called through the windows tells the story of twin peaks tavern. It will premiere at frameline 43, San Francisco international lgbtq Film Festival monday at 1 30 at the castro theater. First weekend of summer and, boy, does it look like it here from this vantage point, right . Were looking at the low cloud deck, but upper elevations we have an offshore wind. So were watching a lot of things from the high fire danger to rising temperatures, but at the coast it will be cool, it will be comfortable. As we look at our highlights for the next several days we are looking at pretty big changes. In the mountains, temperatures going from the low 70s today to upper 70s tomorrow. South lake tahoe, we were down to freezing earlier and we are looking at numbers back home to be comfortable because the fog, well, it is not really going to go away. In fact, it is going to stay with us for the next several days. It is just going to burn back throughout the morning hours. It will erode, that marine layer compresses, and as it does we will be looking at temperatures coming up just a little bit along the coastline. So as we look at another picture here of walnut creek, yes, it looks warm out there, isnt it . Temperatures in the 60s, so already looking at the warmup happening in our east bay valleys.
