They have information, i think id take it. That comment could change the calculation for democrats on impeachment and pressure Speaker Pelosi to act. Well take all that straight to Chris Christie and announcer from abc news, its this week. Here now, chief White House Correspondent jonathan karl. Good morning. Happy fathers day and welcome to this week. Only a small portion of georges extensive interview with the president has aired so far and those excerpts are reverberating throughout washington. In just a moment, youll see new scenes from our allaccess abc news exclusive. George asked the president questions that Robert Mueller never had a chance to ask him. But first, to underscore the significance of what we have already heard from the president , he did not see a problem accepting help from a foreign country, an adversary, even, to win a second term. And if he received that kind of offer, he may or may not tell the fbi about it. That comment surprised some of the president s closest allies. But it was also classic donald trump, bluntly saying exactly what was on his mind without regard for the political repercussions. Prominent republicans have stepped forward to disagree with the president on this. And Senate Democrats tried to pass a bill that would make it a crime to fail to report interference in an election. The president has since sought to clarify his comments. He called into fox and friends saying he would review the material from a foreign entity and report it if it was, quote, something bad. Then this weekend, he tweeted that he enjoyed his interview with george. And, quote, i think i will do many more Network Interviews sending the message he is not worried about the backlash. Also this morning, another big abc news exclusive. We will be joined live by progressive fire brand alexandria ocasiocortez. Shes part of the growing chorus in the house calling for an impeachment inquiry. She may also be the soughtafter endorsement in the democratic president ial primary. But now, more from georges interview with the president. Reporter over two days, President Trump and i covered a lot of ground. Look whos in the back of the car. Him, right here. Reporter starting in iowa on tuesday, where we rode together in his brandnew armored limo, the beast. This some piece of machinery. This is amazing, actually. Reporter the conversation turned tense when the president raised the Mueller Report himself. Whats your pitch to the swing voter on the fence . Safety, security, great economy. I think ive done more than any other firstterm president ever. I have a phony witchhunt. Which is just a phony pile of stuff. Mueller comes out, theres no collusion and no obstruction. They keep going with it. You know what, people are angry about it. I dont think thats what he found. We dont have time for that. Thats what he found. Excuse me, he found no collusion and he didnt find anything having to do with obstruction. They made a ruling based on his findings. They didnt examine collusion. Are you trying to say now there was collusion . He said no collusion. He said he didnt look at collusion. The report said, no collusion. Did you read the report . Yes, i did. You should read it, too. Reporter back at the white house on wednesday, we were invited to the oval office where the president returned to the Mueller Report unprompted. This time, responding to a question about polling of 2020 that he doesnt like. Why does it bother you so much . Because its untrue. I like the truth. You know, im a very honest guy. If i thought they were correct, i wouldnt be complaining at all, i understand that. Its like the witchhunt that goes on. No collusion with russia. There was no collusion. And what bothers me as you know, thats not what Robert Mueller found. No collusion. Reporter in fact, the report cites 126 contacts between the Trump Campaign and russia. But insufficient evidence to charge a criminal conspiracy. Grg wt is the truth. All i want is fairness. But you say that, for example, youre pursuing a trump tower in moscow during the campaign and denying any relationship with russia. George, let me tell you, i didnt even do a deal in moscow. Excuse me, excuse me. You were pursue being. But you say that, for example, youre pursuing a trump tower in moscow during the campaign and denying any relationship with russia. George, let me tell you, i didnt even do a deal in moscow. Excuse me, excuse me. Pursuing, what is pursuing . You know i dont think they had a site. It was a concept of a deal. More of a concept than anything else. It was a concept of a deal someplace in russia, probably moscow. Didnt voters have the right to know that. I wouldnt mind telling them. Theres nothing wrong. I didnt consider that pursuing a deal when you dont even have a site. Reporter then, that stunning admission about the prospect of accepting help from a foreign power in 2020. This campaign un . Thk you can listen. Theres nothing wrong with listening. If somebody called from a country, norway, we have information on your opponent. Oh. I think id want to hear that. You want that kind of interference in our elections . Its not an interference. They have information. I think id take it. Id go to the fbi if there was something wrong. When someone comes up with opporesearch, lets call the fbi. The fbi doesnt have enough agents to take care of it. But you talk honestly to congressmen they all do it. Its called opporesearch. Reporter later that day, i asked him about muellers findings on obstruction of justice. In a statement signed by more than 1,000 former prosecutors who believe trump was spared from indictment only because of a Justice Department opinion because a sitting president cant face criminal charges. The attorney general said you didnt commit obstruction of justice. Robert mueller said he could not exonerate you and he laid out all that evidence. More than 1,000 former prosecutors hey, george, look, i know more about prosecutors than youll ever know. Theyre politicians. I could get 5,000 that would also say that theres nothing. I saw the names and these are many of them are trump haters. Many of them. Many republicans i can give you thousands. We could get you thousands of prosecutors. Ive been treated so unfairly because i never did anything. There was no crime. One of those prosecutors Kamala Harris shes running for president. Shes doing horribly. Shes way down in the polls. Pocahontas is really cleaning her clock. I heard she made that statement. Who wouldnt . Probably if i were running in her position, id make the same statement. Reporter i asked about possible obstruction of justice. You ask your counsel don mcgahn said, mueller has to go. You call him twice, mueller has to go, call me when its done. The story on that very simply, number one, i was never going to fire mueller. I never suggested firing mueller. Thats not what he says. I dont care when he says. It doesnt matter. That was to show everyone what a good counsel he was. Now, he may have gotten it confused with the fact that i have always said, i said to you and anybody who would listen, Robert Mueller was conflicted. But why would don lie under oath because he wanted to make himself look like a good lawyer or or he believed it because i would constantly tell anyone who would listen, including you and the media, Robert Mueller was conflicted. Robert mueller has to go . I never said that. Look, article 2, id be allowed to fire Robert Mueller assuming i did all of the things that i want to fire him. Number one, i didnt. He wasnt fired. Okay, number one, very importantly. More importantly, article 2 allows me to do whatever i want. Article 2 would have allowed me to fire him. It sounds like i wasnt going to fire him. You know why, because i watched Richard Nixon go around firing everybody and that didnt work out too well. Very simply article 2 would allow me to do it. Reporter article 2 outlines the powers of the presidency. The president s defenders says he cant commit obstruction of justice while exercising those powers. You talk about article 2. Your position is that you can hire or fire anybody. Stop or start any investigation thats the position of some of the most talented lawyers. You have to have a position like that because youre a president. But without even bringing up article 2 which absolutely gives you every right so a president cant obstruct justice . A president can run the country. And thats what happened, george. I run the country. Reporter when the president does it its not illegal . A president under article 2, its very strong, read it. Reporter the president never sat for an interview under oath with the special counsels team. Instead, he answered written questions about contacts with russia. But he refused to take any questions about obstruction of justice. But if you answered these questions to me now, why not answer them to Robert Mueller under oath . Because they were looking to get us for lies, for slight misstatements, i looked at what happened to people and it was very unfair. Very, very unfair. Very unfair. So im listening to you, youre not worried about being prosecuted once you leave office. I did nothing wrong. There was no collusion. You dont even hear russia mentioned anymore. Russias not mentioned. Now its all about obstruction of what . They built up a phony crime. They hired a man that hated trump. He hired 18 people that were democrats that hated trump. Some of them contributed to clintons campaign. A couple of them worked for clinton. I mean, what kind of a rigged deal is this . On top of that, after two years, and after being the most transparent in history, i gave them 1. 5 million pages of documents, right, i gave them 400, 500 witnesses, i let don mcgahn testify. He was the white house counsel. I let him testify. You didnt answer questions on obstruction. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I did answer questions in writing. Not on obstruction. I dont know. I answered a lot of questions. They gave me questions, i answered them in writing. Not on obstruction. Okay, george, youre being a little wise guy. Okay, which is typical for you. Just so you understand, very simple its very simple. There was no crime. There was no collusion. Now theres no collusion. It was a setup. In my opinion, and i think its going to come out, i hope its going to come out were going to find out very soon. I really believe its going to come out. When you look at strzok the fbi is the greatest, but the top people were absolutely lowlifes. When you look at strzok and page, theyre talking about an insurance policy just in case she loses that was talk about george, i went through the insurance policy. I understand that. But if they were determined to prevent you from becoming president , why wouldnt they leak it beforehand . You know, youd have to ask them. They tried. They tried. Had that gone out before the election i dont think i could i dont think i would have had enough time to defend myself. You clearly believe there was a group of people working against you. Do you think president obama was behind it . I would say that he must have known about it because it went very high up in the chain. Youre going to find that out. Im not going make that statement quite yet. But id say that president obama had to know about it. Reporter of course, our conversation took place against the backdrop of growing calls among democrats for impeachment. Youre not worried about what happens in congress . Look, the republicans in the senate, every single one of them that i see, knows that this is a witchhunt. They get it 100 . Thats what matters. The democrats are going to do it only because they think it helps them. I think it hurts them in the election. Never a time in our country where someone was so mistreated as i have been and this should never ever be allowed to happen to another president again. A Previous Administration used the intelligence data, and intelligence agencies to spy on my campaign. You believe that president obama spied on you . I dont know. Were going to find out. Well, theres a lot to discuss in that interview and the powerhouse roundtable has been here with me and is ready to go over it all. And later, my exclusive interview with congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez. Her first sunday show interview since taking office. And a reminder, tune in for georges full exclusive interview on the abc news primetime special tonight at 8 00 p. M. Eastern. We will be right back. Be right back. If a Foreign Agent approached me with anything including but not limited to dirt on my opponent id call the fbi. That would be simply unthinkable for a candidate for president to accept that involvement, to encourage it. Participate in it in any shape or form. It would strike at the very heart of our democracy. Senate republicans there clearing rattled by the president s comments. Lets get reaction from our powerhouse roundtable. Former new jersey governor and abc news contributor Chris Christie. Democratic strategist Stefanie Brown james. And rick kline and julie pace, Washington Bureau chief for the associated press. So, governor christie, why is the president saying this . Well, i think its because its what hes really think. One thing about donald trump most of the time when hes emotional like he was in that interview, you can see a number of times he was emotional, hes saying what he really thinks. He does think people take that dirt from foreign governments all the time. Put it in context they dont. I understand that. Let me explain that to you, jon. This guy has never been involved in politics before. Hes been involved in business where a lot of things that happen in business that might be acceptable when youre a public official taking an oath of office thats not acceptable. Thats not to explain away his statement. Its to help people out there understand why would he. Let us be clear, you cant take that information from a foreign en sa, u know, i would callew the f if i thought that there was something bad in there. Lets play that. We see that. He called into fox and friends. This is what he said. Of course, you have to look at it, because if you dont look at it if youre not going to know if its bad. Because if you dont know its bad of course you give it to the attorney general or someone like that. So, stefanie, does this change the calculus on impeachment . Listen, donald trump is exactly the gift that the democrats need. They only need him to keep talking. Hes the evidence that they need to show why he needs to be out of office. I mean, this is a man who, i believe you, he legitimately thinks people are out to get him. Now if he continues to talk hes not wrong about that. But for reasons that hes just oblivious to all of the mistakes that hes made, what democrats need to do is, focus on, yes, we do want to get out information. This is a moment for democrats to continue to make sure theyre pressing forward with their agenda. Because this is going to be a rollout of information. This is why stefanies one of the smartest democrats. You asked her about impeachment and she didnt answer it. If they do it, its the gift that donald trump will win him the election. I dont think thats true. I dont think thats true. Why arent you doing it . If you believe he committed crimes, why arent you doing it . I think theyre going to move forward in some kind of way. With impeachment . I wouldnt be surprised if the democrats rolled that way. I would not. There we go. But what im saying is, though, i truly believe theyre focused on theyre talking about their agenda. I think thats where the American People really are. They want to know what the government is doing for me. The impeachment process isnt going to get us to the place with donald trump out of office. And talking donald trump nonstop which he doesnt mind. Rick, youve been talking to democrats. And i think its key were focused on the momentum for house members coming out in favor of impeachment. Nancy pelosi isnt. Shes looking at different numbers entirely. I talked to a House Democrat whos close to pelosi yesterday, look, 65 or so for impeachment. Probably another 100 who would vote for an inquiry if it came to the floor. But there are about 50 hard nos. They dont have 118 votes. Unless that changes, youre talking about people like abigail and alyssa, if they start to turn, yes. But it wont be words by the president. If he were to defy a court order, something that took to another level. Fight congressional subpoenas . It goes beyond that. They bring that to court. I dont think pelosi is going to move on this. With a majority of the president ial candidates and majority of the democrats on the Judiciary Committee being in favor of inquiry and nancy pelosi has not moved an inch. Those lawmakers put democrats over the edge to put them in the majority. Theyre really split. Theyre are red blue districts. Pelosi will be watching those lawmakers if their politics back home show that impeachment is now a viable option thats the signal shell be looking for. Were seeing nothing of the sort from those lawmakers. Let me clarify what youre talking about. There are 50 hardnos, if it came to a vote it would not pass. I could see 50 democrats showing pelosi im a hard no. If it came down to a vote, vote no . One thing to tell the speaker not to go forward and its another thing to step forward and those things are connected. She has more pressure on her now, even some members on her Leadership Team are moving in that direction. She knows how to count heads. And look, its not like she wants to advertise the fact they dont have 218. You can imagine President Trump using that vote, or even reporting on that vote as a badge of honor. But shes protecting her own members and looking out for what they view as the right political and policy move. Jon, places like new jersey, where a number of republican seats got flipped. Someone like mike scherff or andy kim, if they said that they were for impeachment, they would be out in 2020. In fact, if it came to a vote members like that would vote no. Because theyre preserving their seat rather than worrying about the other issues. No doubt. At the end of the day, democrats need to make sure theyre staying focused on the election. Nothing is going to move forward in the senate about impeachment. The only thing thats going to get donald trump out of office is the elections. For them to focus on what are we doing to make sure that our agenda is getting out to the American Public, to talk very clearly about the fact that we passed a lot of legislative priorities we had, thats the only thing thats going to get donald trump out of office. Thats the crux of argument for nancy pelosi. If your goal is to have trump not serve a second term, you have to focus on beating him at the ballot box. The senate is in republican hands. Theres no way he would be out of office on impeachment. That so far is being a pretty compelling argument to a majority of her caucus. Take that as a vindication. Get impeached and then he got exonerated in the senate. Trump looks at the politics from the clinton era, the second term. He left office more popular after that. He was able to rally his base because of the opposition. Llck with all of you. Up next, though, shes the youngest woman ever elected to congress. Its about investigating, its about litigating, its about getting the truth to hold everyone accountable. And no one is above the law. Congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez of new york is here. Congresswoman, welcome to this week. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. Whats your sense, you watched that whole interview uluspeachmt . Es this changelc elnk every day tt passes the preure to impeach grows. And i think its justifiable. I think the evidence continues to come in and i believe that with the president now saying that he is willing to break the law to win reelection, that that goes that transcends partisanship. It transcends party lines. This is now about the rule of law in the United States of america. Theres a new poll out this morning that shows Significant Growth in democratic support for impeachment and the survey was done before georges interview. Pelosi, though, Speaker Pelosi has really held her line on this. How is that flying with progressives . Well, you know, i think for me this question should not be about polls, it should not be about elections. I think that that impeachment is incredibly serious. This is about the presence of evidence that president may have committed a crime. In this case, more than one. I believe that our decision on impeachment should be based in our Constitutional Responsibilities and duties. That being said, with the increase in polls i think the American People are now recognizing in a much broader scale the depth and the severity of the misconduct coming out of the white house and a demand to protect our institutions and protect the rule of law in the United States and at least opening an inquiry into possible misconduct. So how real is that progressive frustration that Speaker Pelosi has said at least so far and shes holding a line that shes not ready to do that . I think its quite real. I believe there is a very real desire to make sure that we are that we are holding this president to account. What have you told her about this . I think we come together as a caucus and we have these conversations and those as the speaker likes to say there are family conversations, the ones held in confidence, but i do believe that that this is truly again, i have said it publicly, privately, when we subpoenaed the attorney general and secretary ross this week on the census, this is about the rule of law and we have to make sure that we are holding this president account, holding all of government to account. You have 41 freshman democrats that are in seats that were held by republicans, and from everything i have seen, virtually all of them these are your majority makers, all of them oppose moving forward with impeachment. I would disagree with that assessment. I think that some of these dynamics are changing. I would very much not say all of them are opposed to impeachment. I think many of them are extraordinarily concerned about the misconduct coming out. It really you have to look at the process. There is opening an impeachment inquiry and then the Impeachment Vote itself. I think theres a growing sentiment, even among many of these frontrunners, swing district democrats that think we should at least open a inquiry. Look into the abundance of evidence. Ten counts of obstruction of justice, four with rocksolid evidence. We need to at least open an inquiry to see what is going on. Isnt there a ri, i take your point about not wanting to do this for politics, but politics are very real here. Even if you open an inquiry, theres a vote, the president is impeached, obviously he still would have to be convicted in the senate with a supermajority. Thats not going to happen. So dont you risk handing him a political victory here . There are a couple scenarios here. One, theres always the possibility that you open an impeachment inquiry and it does not result in a referral. We open the inquiry wouldnt that be a victory for trump, too . I think that this is about us doing our jobs. And if were talking about whats going to be a victory for trump and whats not going to be a victory for trump, then were politicizing and tainting this process which again should be removed from politics. That being said, Lindsey Graham himself set a very low bar for impeachment in 1998 in the late 90s with the impeachment of bill clinton. That impeachment didnt result in a vote by the senate. I think for us what we need to realize, are we doing our job as a member of the house . And the senate has their entire responsibility. Mitch mcconnell has over a hundred bills. He hasnt brought Election Security to his feet. And lets not forget, hes involved in this mess, too, his wife, transportation secretary elaine chao, just was revealed by the New York Times for having a whole web of potential conflicts of interest. As it relates to bringing projects to kentucky as well. Theres a whole separate set of issues in the senate. What about this question of prosecuting donald trump after he leaves office . Which youre now hearing from more democrats including Kamala Harris. Well, again, thats out of our thats completely out of our scope of responsibilities. I nor any other elected official has control over potential prosecution after the president leaves office. Inappropriate to be calling for it . Like a democrat variation of lock her up. Right, i wouldnt equate it to that extent but i dont think that that is i just dont see the relevancy in calling for prosecution after he leaves office. We have the ability to actually to actually kind of play out our responsibilities now. We have power now. And to bump it to when we dont have power doesnt make a whole lot of sense in speaking about it. Lets turn to the 2020 campaign. Are you going to endorse . Not now. Its possible that ill endorse later on perhaps, you know i dont see myself endorsing any time soon. We havent even had our first debates yet. Im very interested in seeing how things play out. Bernie sanders just released his new york endorsements. Did he ask for your endorsement . He hasnt. Were focused on coled on capping Interest Rates on credit cards at 15 . Were focused on working together in our capacities as a as coworkers. Me in the house and him in the senate. He hasnt asked for my endorsement. Would he have an edge . You volunteered for his campaign. He supported your campaign i think what we really need right now is a president ial candidate thats going to fight for the wellbeing of workingclass americans and all americans. And i think that he does that excellently. I think his policies does that excellently. I believe senator warrens policy does that excellently. I think thats really what we need to be looking for in terms of the agenda. When we talk about the agenda for me, the agenda means the right to health care, it means 15 minimum wage pegged to inflation and making sure we can make College Accessible to all people. It means having a Foreign Policy that is focused on peacebuilding and stability. And that is what im looking for, really, in a candidate for the United States. S, do you believe that the democrats will lose to donald trump if they dont nominate somebody whos in your mind a true progressive . Along the lines you just described. Well, i think that we have a very real risk of losing the presidency to donald trump if we dont have a president ial candidate thats fighting for true transformational change in lives of working people in the United States. If we elect a president on halfmeasures that the American People dont quite understand the agenda, a president that says were fighting for higher wages but we dont want a 15 minimum wage. Fighting for education but we dont make colleges tuitionfree. Fighting for womens rights. Et cetera. We dont want to go all the way with that. We have a real risk. I heard you say recently there are too many candidates. 23. I think you called for eliminations. Who should step out of the race . I think well see. I think democratic voters will see very soon in about a week, two weeks, our first democratic debates. I think well see 20 of them. Right. I do think that the field is too large. I do believe that having a competitive primary is healthy and good. We have so many senate seats to take and the fact that were not discussing that more, even we dont win the president or the senate, we wont be able to get an agenda passed. So joe biden appears to be the frontrunner in virtually all the polls, do you think he has sufficiently answered the accusations from women who accused him of inappropriate touching . In short, does he get it . I think thats something that he has to kind of show the electorate. I think that, you know, i think thats an issue where theres a struggle to be completely honest. I dont think he has i wouldnt say that it is an incredibly severe like, i dont think voters think that hes necessarily guilty of Sexual Misconduct or anything like that. But i do think that there may be some discomfort, especially seeing some clips this week and, you know the week before, telling a 13yearold, telling her brothers to watch out for her. I think there are some things with female voters its not quite locked down and i think that theres some ways to go. But this is also a cultural evolution i think that were having as a country. So i dont think its necessarily about being punitive in these ways. But i do think like in all issues and all demographics its not about right and wrong sometimes. Its about feeling whether or not someone gets it. I dont think hes necessarily convinced all women. But i also dont think that he is, you know, people tend to interpret these situations as completely one way or another. Is he a bad person . Is he a good person . I dont think its about that. Do you think democrats in hindsight made a mistake by giving bill clinton a pass over his treatment of women . Probably. I think again, i dont think that this is as partisan i wouldnt look at this through a partisan lens. I think this is part of an evolution were having in this country. We still have a pay gap which is persistent by inequality in parental leaves. Inequalities in the fact that women dont get guaranteed paid leave. I have three staffers that are having children in the first three months in the First Six Months of my term. I see how these inequalities pay out. Thats why i give all new fathers guaranteed threemonth paid leave. Those inequalities are very real. I think when it comes to president clinton, i think its not just democrats i think that we have historically, from anita hill to the present day, i think that women have historically bared a lot of adversity in the workplace. Now, biden has said he has the most progressive record of any of the candidates. I know you dont agree with that. Could you see yourself supporting joe biden . If he wins the nomination, its absolutely important that we defeat donald trump. Will progressives rally around joe biden . When it comes to who we select as a president ial candidate we have to really factor in the enthusiasm of voters. I think that was an issue that we had in 2016. I think it wasnt necessarily that trump inspired a wave of enthusiastic voters. Its that people felt worse about both candidates in 2016 than they have in a very long time. And so i think that we need to pick a candidate thats going to be exciting to vote for, that all people women, people of all genders, races, income levels, geographies feel excited and good about voting for. I think thats what we should be looking for. Do you think biden has sufficiently answered the question about the Hyde Amendment . He had supported it year after year. Now hes against it. Does that close the case . Im encouraged by the fact that hes now against the Hyde Amendment. I think that its very base level where all candidates need to be. Im excited to be introducing an repeal to the Hyde Amendment for incarcerated women. It should be guaranteed as it is with all women in the United States. So, i think it really depends thats really what the Hyde Amendment is about. The Hyde Amendment isnt about abortion per se. The Hyde Amendment is truly about equality of health care and Health Care Access for lowincome women and women of color and women who are caught in our mass incarceration system. The Hyde Amendment is about income inequality and health care. I think we need to repeal it. I think that having that a strong record, i think all of this is stuff for voters to decide. But i think that we really this is not in the niche topic of womens issues. This is an american issue. Were talking about 50 , 51 of the American Public being impacted by the realities of the Hyde Amendment. Unfortunately, were almost out of time. First, you have suggested that an Economic System that has billionaires is immoral. So, let me just ask you, if you had a true Progressive Program put in place, would jeff bezos still be a billionaire five, ten years from now . Well, i think for me, i spend less time think about thinking jeff bezos and more time thinking about Amazon Warehouse workers. Whether hes a billionaire or not is less of my concern than if your average amazon worker is making a living wage, if they have guaranteed health care and if they can send their kids to college tuitionfree. If thats the case, if hes a billionaire, thats one thing. If him being a billionaire is predicated on paying people starvation wages and stripping them of their ability to Access Health care, and his workers take food stamps so im paying for him to be a billionaire do you think thats why hes a billionaire because they pay starvation wages . I think thats part of the equation when you have a large workforce. And you also participate, you know, in taking billions of dollars of government subsidies. I think that could be part of it. But if hes willing to give up all of his government subsidies, willing to charge fair taxes, if were willing to pay people a living wage, guarantee Everyone Health care, and he is still a billionaire, thats a fight we can have another day. I know youre working with ted cruz. That surprised a lot of people. Our teams are in communication. We havent met in person yet. We have an ongoing working relationship. Im extraordinarily excited in seeing what we can accomplish. Extraordinarily excited about working with ted cruz. Never thought i would say that. Smaller portion sizes, clear calorie labels and reminders to think balance. Because we know mom wants whats best. More beverage choices, smaller portions, less sugar. Balanceus. Org back now with more roundtable. Back now with more roundtable. So, first, governor christie, your reaction to aoc. What do you make well, listen, you know, i think she doesnt know how to do math. Thats for certain. In terms of the calculus on impeachment . No, talking at the end regarding billionaires. She wants everybody to have all of these things. She herself have been so off on math on what these things cost to tax those things. I mean, the fact of the matter is, she is someone whos having a great experience at the moment. And it happens a lot in american politics. Its pretty extraordinary to see a freshman come on the way shes come on. Yeah, absolutely. Part of her popularity shes able to really talk about issues that Everyday Americans face. Health care, education, equal pay. So, you know, shes having a moment for sure. But shes also talking about very real issues that a lot of democrats care about. But no realism attached to it. Not completely. She wants tuitionfree college. She wants 15 minimum wage for everyone. Health care for everybody. These are all things that cost trillions of dollars and shes not once expressed a mathematically feasible way to pay for them. Now, thats okay when youre campaigning for something. But now you have the office and you have an responsibility to do it. If youre going to have her on a show like this, she should be asked about how it works and she wasnt asked that this morning, jon, and as long as shes not asked those questions, well continue to have her moment. At some point you have to govern. Shes not governing. Well, shes a freshman member who is very influential where the caucus is going. Thats why we were talking to her. Yes. Shes somebody the 2020 candidates are lining up trying to get her endorsement. Yes, because shes speaking for democrats and people who actually feel very left out of the process all across the country. She has a voice that represents a lot of people. I think its important to have her on a platform like this, even though shes a freshman member. But shes misleading. Those people who feel left out, stefanie, shes misleading them because shes telling them you can have tuitionfree college. You have medicare for all. Which is, by the way, the platform of many of the democrats none have said how theyre going to pay for it. Elizabeth warren has a wealth tax. Lets get on to the bigger field here, we have the debate stage has been set. Rick, lets take a look. We have the graphic showing two nights of debates. Ten on the stage each time. Night one looks a little bit like, i dont know, rick, how do you describe it . People are saying it looks like jv, but thats a big night for elizabeth warren. I look at senator warren. The way it was split up, the luck of the draw. Shes up there, beto orourke and cory booker, two nice guys, they dont really attack. Its a prime opportunity for her to shine in the ideas primary. Out there dominating the discussion in that space. Its a big moment for her coming up. To know shell take the lead off. That second night is so backloaded. More than 60 of the primary electorate represented with the top four candidates. Do we have the second night graphic . On the second night, you have Bernie Sanders, joe biden, Kamala Harris and mayor pete. Youre going to really see the debate within the Democratic Party play out on that second night. Where youre going to have joe biden representing the more moderate wing of this party. What some people would call the more realistic wing to governor christies point. Youre going to see Bernie Sanders really leading the way for liberals, for biggovernment democrats right now. I do think, to ricks point, theres an opportunity for senator warren on that first night but also a risk. Shell have that stage somewhat to herself in terms of a real platform to sell her ideas. Shes going to hit that stage as a candidate whos really on the rise. The risk for her, in that second debate, where you just got biden and harris, mayor pete on stage, does warren look like shes out of the mix . Her campaign would argue what shes doing on the ground is much more important than what she does on the debate stage. Heres the interesting thing about that, you know, there are two ways people got to the debate stage, one of them is how many unique donors the candidates have at this moment. Bernie sanders currently has more unique donors than almost the entire first five folks who are polling in the race. So he has a significant groundswell of dollars. You know, money can get you volunteers. Your ground game is really important. I think its going to be really important to see how the grassroots structure how they respond to these debates. Right now, hes winning in the money race. And having been through this, and having been at the main debate i think eight times and at the junior debate once, what the junior debate does for you potentially is, and what could do for warren is, shes got to dominate that thing. The expectation i remember going in there being more nervous for that debate than the main stage debate, when youre standing between Rick Santorum and mike huckabee, you better do well. How many people were in that debate . It wasnt ten. No, i think there were eight in the junior debate and ten in the upper debate. When we got done with that debate, though, our poll numbers went up significantly. We were in the next debate easily. And we were higher than we were before. Theres a real opportunity for warren but there will be a pressure, too, because the expectation will be, and well build this up in the media, that shes going to dominate the first night and if she doesnt dominate the first night its a problem for her. If she does, shes the upside. And then shes the target now of booker and beto to contrast themselves with her as well. Theyre going to figure out neither one of them seem like theyre ready to take a fight i think booker will have a much more different voice. I think hell be aggressively friendly. A question for a lot of these candidates in this debate, what is your strategy . Do you draw a direct contrast . For some of these candidates theyre really still in introductory phases. Theyre unknown to a lot of the public. To have a breakout moment, go head to head with another candidate. Or do a little bit more bio and more explanation of their policy. Its early in is race. But you know, its two months earlier than four years ago. One more thing, jon, with booker, this is going to be the biggest moment for him of the first four, five months. Cory will have to decide, is hes going to be charming or go on the attack . My guess, hell be charming. Thank you all for joining us. Thank you for sharing part of your sunday with us.
