Both of the nations largest teachers unions say they overwhelmingly reject the idea arming staff, saying what their students need are more books and counselors, not more guns. And whats so surprising about all of this. Were learning that deputy who did not go in the building was recently named School Resource officer of the year. His performance evaluations, he was recognized for his solid judgment. So, lets turn to abc news contributor, steve gomez. Steve, what was your reaction when you heard the sheriff say this officer waited outside as the shooting was happening . Caller my initial reaction was anger, disappointment. I was so discouraged to hear this. Its bad enough that we have heard all these other potential ways the crime could have been prevented and you have so many lives lost and injured. But, when i thought about this some more, i started to think about what that officer was going through. Hes an older officer because obviously, he was able to retire and he had been serving at the school for many, many years. So he had been somewhat out of battle, kind of like what i went through at lapd where its every day youre dealing with stress and the potential for a shooting and so on. He hadnt had that for years. You tend to start to wonder what was going on in his mind, knowing there was a shooting there. He froze, it sounds like. And you think what was going on in his head . As Law Enforcement officers, you go to the fight. Go to the fire. Thats what youre there for and you tend to wonder had he been out of that fight, that daily combatting violence and protecting lives . Let me ask you this because there are many teachers who go through active Shooter Drills or school that is go through active Shooter Drills. Do these resource officers go through this same thing . It would teach them not to freeze, i would think. Who knows. Caller yes, they do. I mean, they should because everybody should. If theyre go having to an active Shooter Drill or evacuation drill, everybody should be involved. Faculty, students, administrators and the resource officer whos probably most adept at security matters. That is something that they are going to have to look at to see what kind of training did that resource officer go through, especially when it came to active Shooter Training and what were the policies that he would have been following in a shooting situation. Nevertheless, whether he was waiting for back up or resources because he knew there was a shooting. We all know about active shooter situations at schools. He had to get in there and save lives. Thats what was important. Steve, we are talking about teachers being part of these drills. Theres also talk about Arming Teachers. Is there any kind of consensus among those in Law Enforcement on that issue . Caller in Law Enforcement, we tend to not want private citizens or the innocent civilians to be armed because the problem is, you can have what we call blue on blue shootings where you have a, you know, a teacher who has a gun and is taking action and Law Enforcement is coming in and that teachers not going to have a vest that says police or School Police or anything like that. So its going to be difficult to differentiate whos a suspect. So its not as easy as were going to allow them to carry guns if theyre qualified and trained and so on. Think about if you were a teacher and you were going to carry a gun, are you going keep it in your purse . Where are you going to have it. Its going to have to be on you at all times. This is something i was talking to my wife about, where would you put the gun . Because you have to have them on you at all times because gun possession is important for cops. Thats taught on a daily basis. Constantly concerned about someone trying to take their gun away from them. It isnt as simple as we are going give you the authority to carry a gun at school. And you never know when and where these things are going to happen and they play out so rapidly. In this case, seven minutes. A new 32count superseding indictment, adding new charges of tax evasion and bank fraud to the previous charge of Money Laundering brought last october. Accused of funneling 75 million into offshore accounts and hiding 30 million of it from the treasury department. Much of the money, allegedly coming from ukrainian politicians with ties to the kremlin. Prosecutors say manafort and gate laundered millions and failed to pay taxes in order to live lavish lives, including spending more than half a Million Dollars on clothing in Beverly Hills and they claim some of the fraud took place while they were on the campaign. And questions mount about whether gates will enter a plea deal and flip to cooperate with investigators. Until now those talks have been inconclusive.
