Heartstopping action. We were glued to our tvs in the news room. One of our abc 7 crews caught this, a man moving around, maybe dancing on top of his pickup truck with a crowbar on hand and it got our attention and the attention of chp, who had followed him for about 45 minutes as he waved around this crowbar like he was a drum major with a baton. This mornings pursuit began in berkeley. Abc7 news was there as a man pulled his truck over to the median of interstate 80, stood on top of it and waved a crowbar wildly as the morning commute moved past him. Then this turns into a chase. This abc 7 south beach camera captures the man driving into San Francisco on the bay bridge. From there, sky7 follows the chase onto southbound 101. He eventually made his way across the san mateo bridge. He auto voided traffic. Traffic seemed to avoid him. Look at that. The driver keeping both hands off the wheel. A firm grip, though, still on that crowbar. At one point, he hit at least 80 Miles Per Hour as clocked by sky7s sky map technology. Then much slower when he got off the highway into hayward. Reporter chp officers cleared the scene about a half hour ago. Theres glass and debris in the intersection behind me where this came to an end. Ill show you sky7 footage that captures the end of this chase that ended with a pit move. West whitten avenue and almadore street. Its around the Alameda County buildings. You can see the truck spins out of control after colliding with chp. Then officers converge. Since the pursuit went into several chp jurisdictions around the bay area, you can see a lot of officers. They pulled the man out of his truck without incident. While he was cuffed on the sidewalk, our photographer asked the man what he had to say for himself. You put a lot of people in harms way. What do you have to say about that . Its never good to elude atthy point or failure to yield for anything. Youre putting the motoring public in danger. Reporter as you can see from the video, the man appears to be intoxicat intoxicated. Chp confirms thats their initial impression as well. Of course, they have investigating that. Chp drove the truck out of the intersection. Officers say it is registered to the driver, the man they arrested. Officers confirm the man had an implement in the vehicle with him. Theres a lot of relief here he has been released from the hospital. The chief says it is just chilling for him when he finds out one of his officers has been hurt. Heres a look at the two people that officers have arrested. First, 18yearold juan vargas of patterson. Jennifer of santinella. Lfriend, they were at a sideshow early sunday morning. We have video of the sideshow, including the instant the officer was hit by the car. He was standing on the side, trying to break up the sideshow when it happened. Police found the abandoned vehicle that hit the officer and say the couple later called it in to report it stolen. Thats when police figured out who they were, they believe they did it and arrested the pair. They have filed several charges against the couple. The police chief explaining this morning. The leading charge is attempted murder because of the seriousness of how this played or the. The underlying charges, obviously, if you the use your car in a crime and then you abandon it and then try to reported it stolen later, were familiar with that tactic. Doesnt usually work. A man is in the hospital after Antioch Police say he was assaulteded with a deadly weapon. Investigators have not said how the man was assaulted but they confirm it was not a shooting. The 34yearold victim from pittsburg was taken to the hospital where hes now in stable condition. No word on any suspects. Developing news out of redwood city. The chp is investigating a deadly crash that involved at least four vehicles on highway 101 near whipple avenue. It happened just before 2 00 this morning on the northbound side of the highway. Officers say a motorcyclist died at the scene. Hes described as a hayward resident in his late 30s. Investigators are looking into who was at fault.
