Elissa, the memorial venue couldnt contain all those who came out in honor of ed lee. Reporter thats right, people are starting to file out. There was a huge turnout for the celebration of light. Earlier the line wrapped around the block. The event was full and even those overflow rooms at the San FranciscoPublic Library were at capacity. Longtime friends, other politicians and family members all gathered here at city hall today to say goodbye. Ed lee was a real person. He was a person that communicated integrity, a love of life. In china, San Franciscos First Chinese american mayor, he was like a superstar, an icon. But to everyone we met and everywhere we went, mayor lee was like beyonce with the mustache. Ed lee had the qualities of a person whom if you did an interview of all of the ones i just spoke about, he would be the only one would be rated appropriately by the headhunters as to who ought to be mayor. All the rest of us would be considered okay. I think if there is any legacy, ed, its a reminder that life is short and our wisdom is way too limited to win fleeting victories at other peoples expense. Eds life was about triumphing together. He knew that a measure of his successor any public figures success, was not the honors received, but the difference that he made in the lives of regular people in our community. Nothing was too small or too big for him. From stuffing envelopes to speaking on stage, my dad was happy to do it all. Often until late hours in the night. Just think of this. Head of the human rights commission, purchaser of the city, head of the department of public works, chief administrative officer, and mayor of the city and county of San Francisco. Yes, ed lee was an outstanding man. Reporter this is the program that was handed out to people who attended the celebration of life today. A lot of people are still gathered in front of city hall. People filing out and a lot of mourners have left flowers. They cover the steps of city hall. We could see a couple protesters out here tonight. They were blaming mayor lee for thousands of evictions. And you can also see that there is still a huge turnout, even the people who werent able to get in tonight, of course, went into the overflow rooms in the library. We found numerous dignitaries at the celebration of ed lees life. Former San Francisco giants slugger barry bonds was among those in attendance. Numerous mayors from other cities were also there. Former oakland mayor jean kwan recalled her work with ed leon Affordable Housing long before he became San Franciscos mayor. Ed was very humble and very kind. People sometimes didnt think he did enough. I know as a mayor how hard it is to build consensus, and sometimes he would grumpible, people think he didnt understand Affordable Housing. When we were activists, we probably invented Affordable Housing. Long live the humanity and basic kind of love San Francisco is supposed to have. Long live the sanctuary city and all the stuff he stood for. I know its not that popular because of that. Im home grown San Francisco, and those values are critical to keep the city going. And here you see the late mayors family among the first to arrive at city hall this afternoon. Even as people filed in, flowers were still being left on the steps of city hall as a tribute. Heres a quick look at mayor ed lees political background and accomplishments. In 2005 he was appointed city administrator of San Francisco. Five years later the board of supervisors selected him to replace Gavin Newsome after he was elected lieutenant governor. Despite saying he had no intentions of running for mayor, he ran and won in 2011. In the 2015 election, lee faced no substantial challenger and was reelected with 56 of the vote. The office of the mayor website says 140,000 jobs were added during his tenure, and claims mayor lee has added more homes to the Housing Market than any other mayor in San Francisco history. Officer is upped arrest for repeatedly firing his gun inside one of San Franciscos most exclusive hotels. And for a time he refused to surrender. We are told that off Duty Police Officer now undergoing a mental evaluation at a hospital here in San Francisco. His identity not being released tonight, but we are told he is a veteran of the Richmond Police department. The bizarre gunfire incident left many guests here at the Four Seasons Hotel rattled. Many asking why it happened. Its not anything that youre expecting to happen at the four seasons. Reporter guests at the Four Seasons Hotel are shocked about reports of gunfire from inside the hotel. About 5 00 a. M. Sunday. The witness who stated there was a male located in the building who was shooting a gun. Reporter police said the suspect is an offduty Richmond Police officer. Police sources tell abc7 news the officer fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor which was under construction and with few places for off sericer take cover, it took 90 minutes to convince him to surrender which happened at 6 30 p. M. He surrendered peacefully. He is currently in our custody and we have no reports of any injuries. Reporter police recovered a hand gun belonging to the offduty cop. The four seasons general manager confirms to abc7 news the man was a guest at the hotel. Other hotel guests were questioned by police. Detectives said, well, theyre asking people questions. What did they ask . If we heard gunshots. Reporter some guests asking why they never received orders to shelter in place. Im a very loyal four seasons guest and im surprised they didnt notify us about Something Like that. Reporter the man was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. We have placed him on administrative leave and conducting an investigation on the incident. Reporter a motive for the gunfire is still unknown. In San Francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. Police in san bruno are investigating a fatal hit and run accident. Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian down on sky line boulevard just after 7 00 this morning. They found a person like on the side of the roadway between College Drive and sharp park road. That pedestrian who was determined to have been hit by a car was pronounced dead at the scene. An identity has not been released. To developing news now on the thomas fire raging in Southern California, an Evacuation Order for parts of Ventura County was lifted today, but the fire continues to grow in Santa Barbara county. The thomas fire has now expanded to more than 420 square miles with 40 containment. This fire started nearly two weeks ago. Flames have destroyed 1020 homes. Cal fire says critical fire, high winds and low humidity continue to feed the flames. Crews tell abc news they are in the stretch of fight against the flames. Eye firefighter who died battling the fire was laid to rest today. An autopsy found 32yearold cory iverson died from burns and smoke inhalation.
