Overnight firefighters relentlessly taking on these raging flames. When you see that, all that orange glow, thats scary. Reporter on a mission to maintain the progress theyve made battling the wildfires ravaging Southern California for days. This fire is dwarfing these firefighters. Look at that. Reporter that massive thomas fire growing to more than 140,000 acres destroying more than 400 homes and other buildings. Its just devastation for them. Reporter but Officials Say the powerful santa ana winds that have fueled the six fires burning this morning have calmed significantly for now giving firefighters a chance to gain some ground. A little bit of hope. You know, it was getting a little dire there for a little while. Reporter at that inferno in Ventura County some of the evacuation orders now lifted, and in los angeles county, most residents forced from their homes not allowed to return. But youre not out of the woods just yet. No, absolutely not. Reporter in San Diego County several people injured trying to escape from the fastmoving lilac fire. Among them, a couple burned trying to save their horses from this training center. At least 25 of the thoroughbreds there killed. Its a very sad day. Reporter that fire destroying more than 100 homes and other buildings. This morning it is 15 contained. Its all hands on deck, and everybody is doing what we can to get this thing done and buttoned up. That precipitation shield beginning to reach towards the north and east. It was a mild and quiet fall for most of the country. Well, all things have changed and this storm has been winding up for a couple of days hitting the south first with a vengeance. Overnight Winter Weather taking aim at the east coast from delaware to virginia, residents prepping for the first significant snowfall of the season. It is snowing like crazy here. Reporter treacherous conditions continue across the south. In san antonio, icy roadways causing this massive 20car pileup. Parts of texas blanketed with a half a foot of snow. Houston greeted with this unusual sight. Its been eight years since its seen snow. These palm trees in portland, texas, receiving a dusting. In north carolina, cars slipping and sliding. Some guy in a truck slid off the road and hit a car. Reporter this fedex truck losing control and toppling over after hitting some ice. Atlanta brought to a near standstill by a wintry mix and delta canceling nearly 1,300 flights in the last day with a line of planes needing deicing. Over 46,000 Power Outages reported in georgia. One man killed by a power line downed by ice and snow. Dangerous conditions also felt in northeast alabama with multiple accidents and closed roads. In parts of mississippi, the highest daily snowfall in 35 years. Nearly half a foot of snow there as the storm pushes east. Certainly some headaches and some startling images coming out of the gulf coast states. Unbelievable. And guess what, theres still some snow hanging around the peach state of georgia. Atlanta, white stuff right over the radar there, so this precipitation really still stretches along the entire east coast, obviously punching up the i95 corridor in through d. C. , philadelphia, starting to fill in here, new jersey, as well. New york, hartford, providence, boston, youll get it too as we go through time. Immediate coastline will see a mixture at times but generally speaking its cold enough to see some snow. Our computer models showing that we could see significant accumulations in some spots enough to warrant these Winter Weather advisories and winter storm warnings across the carolinas, virginia, the delmarva and then again right up through new england and lakeeffect snows will be cranking on the back side of this too. So, for the bulk of today well see some snow. Heavy at times right on through 7 00 tonight so if you have some travel to do along the northeast coastal corridor, youll have to deal with that and maybe push it off till tomorrow. 4 to 6 inches of snow in that pink area, so that is significant for sure. The first significant one of the season, and it makes it always dicey travel for sure. Tom, paula, back to you. Court documents filed friday by the prosecution give a preview of the mountain of evidence fbi agents seized after executing 15 search warrants in the case. More than 400,000 items in all including financial records and emails, plus dozens of laptops, phones and thumb drives. One of the president s closest aides, hope hicks, was questioned this week by the special counsels team. The New York Times reports the fbi tried to warn her that russian operatives were trying to contact her during the transition. Even taking the unusual step earlier this year of briefing her in the white house situation room. Theres no indication that hicks did anything wrong. Just last week, the president vowed he would not be coming to alabama to campaign for Senate Candidate roy moore, and he kept his word, but this event in the Florida Panhandle took place less than 15 miles from the alabama border and inside the mobile media market, tom and paula. He somehow has and denied those allegations. His numbers are good. He has that huge boost from the president , and the president is so beloved by republicans in alabama, that could be the turning point in this race, but as we heard stephanie report, doug jones is all over the state campaigning very hard, unlike moore who hasnt made a public appearance since tuesday but hes hoping for africanamerican voters to turn out so well see on tuesday. I dont think its in the bag for moore. Its going to be a very tight race. Well have to wait and see. I want to bring in abc news political commentator Cokie Roberts into the conversation joining us from south carolina. Cokie, good morning to you. And lets start right there with doug jones. Do you get the sense theres anything that he could do . Hes the democratic challenger, can do to beat roy moore in the special Election Senate race . It would be very, very tough. His hope is to really turn out, as tom was just saying, really turn out that africanamerican vote. Hes got africanamerican politicians like cory booker, the senator from new jersey down there campaigning with him and hope that white voters who are disgusted with roy moore stay home. That would be his best hope. And, you know, its very hard because theres no pattern of people voting democratic in alabama in recent years. The last exit poll we did there which was in 2012, only 16 , 16 percent of white women voted for barack obama. So its going to be a very tough one. And more than 40 of people in those polls said they were evangelicals, and thats moores base hes trying to turn out. Interesting. Cokie, if moore does win, President Trump could take a lot of credit for it but when republicans were fleeing, the president stood by moores side. If he makes it to the senate, isnt the president inviting further scrutiny when it comes to his history with women . Well, all of this situation around Sexual Harassment with it being so much in the news and now weve got three members of congress having resigned this week alone and who knows what is to come, the president is very much in the crosshairs, but he has ridden it out before and gotten elected and is likely to ride it out again unless something happens and, of course, things do keep happening. Longtime congressman trent franks has moved up the timing of his resignation, which is now effective immediately. Yeah, this after reports of a former aide saying he repeatedly asked her to carry his child. At one point allegedly offering her millions of dollars to be a surrogate. Abcs Gloria Riviera joins us now from washington with more. Reporter this morning an early resignation shaking up congress. Arizona congressman trent franks abruptly giving his notice one month sooner than expected. In a statement saying we came to the conclusion that the best thing for our family now would be for me to tender my previous resignation effective today december 8th, 2017. Franks originally stated his resignation would be effective january 2018 after receiving pressure from House Speaker paul ryan who urged him to quit after learning of credible claims of misconduct. The republican is accused of asking two members of his staff to bear his child. The Associated Press is reporting one woman claims franks offered her 5 million to act as a surrogate. Franks speaking out saying, i deeply regret that the topic of surrogacy was discussed in the office and that it caused distress. Known as a social conservative it is a test of our basic humanity and who we are as a human family. Reporter franks now the third member of congress to resign just this week over allegations of Sexual Misconduct or harassment. This really is a watershed moment for our country. Reporter franks has denied the allegations against him, reports are at least one woman, a former staffer, claims franks offered her a written contract for review with a payment included, and when she refused, she says she was sidelined at the office. Two protesters were killed at the gaza border on friday. Another two palestinians died in an israeli air strike in response to a rocket attack on an israeli town and this morning, israeli troops used teargas against protesters hurling stones at them in bethlehem. All of this following President Trump recognizing jerusalem as the capital of israel earlier this week. Back here in the u. S. Overnight 29 people were injured in San Francisco when the charter bus they were in overturned on highway 101 in the city. 25 of those passengers were taken to a local hospital with injuries ranging from broken bones to cuts and scrapes. Police are praising the bus driver for making sure that all of the passengers were accounted for before he left that vehicle. In Detroit Police are stepping up patrols after a series of shootings on two highways in that city. The authorities there say that three shootings on i94 and i96 early thursday may have been the work of the same gunman. One of the three drivers was shot and wounded in the leg seen on this video, security video, limping into a gas station for help. Police say there was no apparent relationship between the three victims and those shootings. And this morning the Washington Post reporting that six women have come forward with multiple accusations of Sexual Harassment against San Francisco based federal appeals judge alex kozinski. Kozinski who once served as the ninth Circuit Court chief judge is accused of showing two of the women pornography on a computer in his chambers and making inappropriate comments. In florida, miami police using a helicopter to hoist two men who were stuck in waist deep water for a week while hiking in the everglades. The men said that they survived by eating ramen noodles and beef jerky that they had on them and said they could also hear alligators bellowing from every direction. I didnt know alligators bellowed. Apparently they do. The men called 911 when they lost their map and realized they were in deep trouble and deep water. Reporter good morning, tom and paula. Brendan dassey won two Court Battles before this new ruling which could keep him in prison for the rest of his life. That federal Appeals Court finding he was not intimidated or coerced into confessing to rape and murder. This morning, the court ruling that could have led to freedom for Brendan Dassey. What could you hear . Screaming. Reporter one of the wisconsin men at the center of the popular Netflix Series making a murderer. I am innocent of the rape and murder of teresa halbach. Reporter instead a federal Appeals Court narrowly decided to uphold his conviction keeping him in prison. Dassey sentenced to life in 2007, found guilty of helping his uncle steven avery rape and kill photographer teresa hallbach. We know you were involved in this. Reporter the 2015 docuseries raising questions about the case. Last year a federal judge overturned dasseys conviction ruling that detectives coerced the 16yearold with learning disabilities into confessing. Be honest. You went inside, didnt you . Yeah. You went in the trailer . Uhhuh. Reporter friday judges in the seventh Circuit Court of appeals sharply divided voted 43 that the confession was not coerced. Judge alana diamondrovner disagreed calling the decision a profound miscarriage of justice. I was shocked by the ruling by the seventh Circuit Court of appeals. We all watched his confession on making a murderer. He seemed to be completely out of it and unaware of what was happening. Reporter dasseys attorneys are now planning to fight on to the Supreme Court saying in a statement, we intend to continue pursuing relief for brendan. The chances of this case being accepted by the Supreme Court are not that great. But thats his only option at this point. Reporter the chief judge for the seventh circuit also disagreed with the ruling calling the confession involuntary and highly unreliable.
