Meanwhile, helicopter crews working into the night, dropping fire retardant and water are trying desperately to get this under control. So the fire has destroyed major highways and the air quality has been declared in other areas. These are live pictures in the overnight hours. Really, they go for thousands and thousands and thousands of acres, beyond the camera view that youre seeing there. Now abcs marcus moore is right there on the ground on the fire lines. Reporter homes in flames. Thousands evacuated. Theyre attacking it the best they can. Thats all they can do because this wind is moving in every direction. This entire apartment complex is engulfed in flames as fire crews try to put water on it. But look over here, theres another large fire burning on the other side of this hill. Mandatory evacuation due to the fire. Reporter First Responders going door to door. Is anybody home . Reporter evacuating more than 27,000 residents. Many forced to drive out through an inferno. This is literally like 15 feet away from us right now. Reporter this group panicked as the flames started coming in. We need to get out of here as soon as possible. That fire is right there. Reporter the Vista Del Mar hospital destroyed. All patients and staff made it out in time. By daybreak, firefighters are able to make their aerial assault. The ferocious santa ana winds unrelenting. The wind is blowing the photographer right now, upwards of 70 Miles Per Hour. The flames turning entire neighborhoods into cinders. My house is gone and all the neighbors around me are all gone, as well, all of them. Reporter this home burning from the inside out. We met tracie bird as she watched her home burn to the ground. I cant describe what im thinking. My mind is not really connecting with it all yet. And yet, there it is. Reporter the thomas fire one of multiple blazes scorching the state. To the south, the creek fire on the Northern Edge of los angeles, forcing more evacuations. That fire also out of control. And in santa clarita, the rye fire jumping interstate 5, shutting down that major highway. The winds have picked up again here in ventura and the embers are skipping house to house and jumps over some and destroying others. The other problem, water pressure. Firefighters say they had to let some house the burn because they didnt have enough pressure in the hydrants, perhaps because of the power outages. Marcus moore, abc news, california. At least 150 structures have been destroyed by that wildfire in Ventura County. And that includes at least one large apartment complex and the psychiatric hospital. You saw it referred to there in marcus report. But officials expect the true number is much higher. Thousands of people have been forced from their homes, and theyre not worried about what they might find when they return. At one point, a wall of fire 30 foot high came at us and we had to turn and around. At some point, you cant see five foot in front of you because of the smoke. I happened to get up at 3 00 in the morning and go out to have a cup of coffee and smelled the smoke. It was less than an hour and the canyon was involved. These winds are insane. We went outside and there was gold all over the place. I just dont know where to go. I dont know where to take them. Theres more horses in trailers, so if anybody is out there who can bring a horse trailer out here and help because once we get them out of our place, it may still be going. We may have to move them from there, too. The neighbors shed caught on fire and exploded into a fireball and set the roof on fire and i took off down the street. How many more horses do you have left . Maybe 20 more. 20 more . 20 more. Weve just been watching the news all day, and when we saw our house on fire, we knew that the worst scenario had come true. I think were in shock. Thats how im taking it. But christmas will go on, just not here. Yeah, clearly tough on the people and tough on the animals, there, too. Check it out. One kabc reporter helped rescue a lost dog from the creek fire. That dog is on its way to a shelter. A lot of people in this area also have horses. There are many ranches there and stables. Two men believed to be linked to the plot are expected to appear in a london courtroom today on terrorism charges. Also today, President Trump is expected to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel, with upending decades of u. S. Policy and possibly jeopardizing midwest peace efforts. Fire on the east side and west side of highway 33. Were seeing a lot of fire Apparatus Team the activity in this area. We believe there are some homes in there. Were going to fade in to satellite again so you can see all those homes. The fire up on that steep hillside gives you an idea of how steep that terrain is that the fire is on. You can see all the fire here on the north side of the 101 and west side of 33. It is making its way to the forest, both to the north and to the west. Now there are hotspots all along the fire line, all the way back to highway 150. So there are hotspots all the way around. The bulk of the main fire, the head fire at the left flank, if you will, the south flank continuing to burn here on north of highway 101. What a fascinating look at where the fire is burning. And the update to j. T. s report there, that fire has now jumped the 101 freeway and has reached the pacific ocean. All the smoke from the fires is making the air quality in that area much more unhealthy. You can even see the smoke from space. Check out that image. And the l. A.
