Announcer live where you live, this is abc 7 news. Three fires raging in Southern California right now show no signs of slowing down. Theyve already destroyed homes and a psychiatric hospital. And tonight flames are burning dangerously close to more houses. Motorists and even Magic Mountain as well. Good evening. Im dan ashley. And im dion lim in for ama daetz. Tonight 27,000 people have been forced from their homes. Yeah. Gusts are pushing the three destructive fires into new areas across ventura and los angeles counties. So far theyve burned 66,000 acres combined, and the thomas fire is the largest one at 50,000 acres. Right now its at 0 containment. At least 150 structures have burned so far. That number only expected to rise. Abc News Reporter dania bacchus has more. Reporter firefighters will continue to work throughout the night as the fires here that have already left behind so much destruction dont show any sign of letting up. Fires are raging in california. The thomas fire in Ventura County northwest of los angeles expanding to over 70 square miles in a matter of hours. Theyre attacking it the best they can. Thats all they can do because this wind is moving in every direction. These fencedin horses rescued just in the knick of time. Its craziness. I just dont know where to go. I dont know where to take them, where its safe. Some homeowners lost everything. Its just devastating. This was going to be my dying in house. The only thing is the house died before i did. Reporter this 60unit apartment complex destroyed. The vista hospital razed to the ground, all patients and staff making it out in time. Dont know what theyre going to do without it because i know a lot of people who got help from this place. Reporter the thomas fire is just one of many infernos scorching Southern California. The creek fire at the Northern Edge of los angeles forcing more evacuations. I cannot emphasize the need to evacuate. If not for yourself but for the safety of our First Responders. Reporter and in Santa Clarita the rye fire jumping interstate 5, forcing it to shut down. Firefighters say they have not been able to examine the scope of the damage done here. They are calling this firefight an uphill battle because of the santa ana winds that are expected to last throughout the week. Danya bacchus, abc news, ventura, california. Just as we exterminationed here in the north bay wildfires, this is an all hands on deck situation. Firefighters from across the bay area have been called down to Southern California to help battle the massive winddriven fires. After the devastation in the north bay, of course, its a terrible kind of deja vu. Abc 7 News Reporter katie ma marzullo is in san jose. Certainly we have our work cut out for us. Reporter captain bill murphy of the Santa Clara CountyFire Department talked with us via facetime from the front lines of the thomas fire in Ventura County. It was only two months ago he was in a similar firefight in santa rosa. Probably the biggest difference would be that the temperatures not quite as high as it was in the north bay fires but the wind, the relative humidities are very similar to what happened in the north bay. Reporter those are two dangerous similarities. Basically critical for extreme fire behavior. Reporter Craig Clements teaches meteorology at San Jose State University and is the director of the schools Fire Weather Research lab. He said santa ana winds are normal in december but the lack of rain makes for a dangerous combination. When you have a very high wind and you have dry fuels, if you have an ignition and a fire starts the wind is going to be dominating that fire spread. Reporter firefighters from across the bay area including San Francisco have responded to the call for mutual aid. We had a warning the last few days. Were ready to go. Reporter the marin county Fire Department tweeted this picture of a huge plume of smoke near Magic Mountain. This could be a multiday event. So we should expect the worse. Reporter in san jose katie marzullo, abc 7 news. As Southern California faces heat and flames, those winds that katie just mentioned in her story may pose a challenge to firefighters. Heres meteorologist sandhya patel. Those winds in Southern California have eased up a bit. Still gusting in parts, but those santa ana winds will pick up again as we head toward the next couple of days, which is why red flag warnings rupp. For us here in the bay area the winds have dropped off. Thats allowing temperatures to drop. Its at freezing right now. 32 degrees in fairfield. As we take a look compared to 24 hours ago, down 21 degrees in fairfield. Down 10 degrees in san jose compared to 24 hours ago. So the Carquinez Strait in delta under a frost advisory as we head into tonight into early tomorrow morning. Widespread frost is protected. Protect your plants, pets, and pipes. And for the north bay valleys 1 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. We are looking at a freeze warning. 22 to 30 degrees. That means may kill vegetation. With temperatures plunging, many people in the north bay are getting ready to face the cold. Some, though, were caught off guard a bit. Reporter dan, right now in downtown san rafael its 43 degrees, but in other parts of marin and sonoma counties its 41 degrees at this hour. Very cold. Which means people should really be ready for this cold weather. To say its chilly tonight would be an understatement. The layers are on, the hot coffee is in hand, and people just seem to be moving faster to keep warm. Ruben de leon works as a parking val yi. He wasnt prepared for this cold night. Yeah. My hands are freezing and its really hard to give the money. Reporter at marin on ice in san rafael plans are already under way to keep the ice from cracking in the cold overnight. For the first time in five years the owner will actually raise the temperature of the ice chiller. If the ice gets too cold it turns brittle and it can tear itself apart. So we just want to make sure that the ice stays malleable so it doesnt break. My guess is it will be gone within a week. Theres been a run on insulation to keep pipes from bursting. It gets cold in the colder weather. Your pipes your plumbing is in danger. This is your best protection for it. Reporter a lot of restocking is happening here. When its cold, even the rodents want to come inside. Thats why rat traps are selling fast and so are plant protectors. Im watering my citrus and im fertilizing very lightly my citrus and im covering it. Because this seasons first frost could do some serious damage. In marin county Lisa Amin Gulezian, abc 7 news. The man acquitted of killing kate steinle now faces federal charges after a grand jury indicted him today. Jose Inez Garcia Zarate was found not guilty on murder and manslaughter charges last week. The new federal charges include being a felon in possession of a firearm and having a gun while being in the u. S. Illegally. Garcia zarate is an undocumented immigrant. Hes back in local Court Next Week for sentencing on a gun possession conviction in the steinle case. You are looking at what happens when a van rammed into a house in santa clara. The santa clara Fire Department also tweeted that no one was hurt in tonights crash. Thats very good news. It happened along andrea place near warburton avenue in santa clara. Abc 7 news was in San Francisco where an uprooted tree blocked part of davis street near broadway. A witness tells abc 7 the truck hit, it pulling it up from its roots. That tree has since been removed. The family of a toll collector killed on the job is inviting the public to her memorial service. Si si han died after a speeding box truck plowed into her toll booth at the bay bridge moments after she started her shift on saturday morning. Hans memorial is at 10 00 a. M. New at 11 00 tonight, student activists celebrated the resignation of a san jose state professor who was accused of sexually harassing his students. Abc 7 news was at san jose state when sash, or students against Sexual Harassment, hosted a victory party. The group had launched a petition drive against dr. Louis aptikar. Sash leaders plan to remain watchful. Because were not naive to think that thats the only professor on campus that is doing Sexual Harassment to students. The outrage againstantikar erupted after he was allowed to resume teaching psychology following a 2015 Sexual Harassment case. Silicon valley investor shervin pishavar has taken a leave of absence from his Venture Capital firm after reports of Sexual Harassment. A report says he groped an uber employee at a Company Party in 2014 and harassed other women. Hes taken leave from several Company Boards including virgin hyperloop, one which he cofounded. San francisco will soon become the first u. S. City to let the law of supply and demand determine how much change youll put in those parking meters. Major wildfires keep growing across Southern California. The biggest one, the thomas fire, jumped across u. S. Highway 101 in Ventura County this evening. So far its burned 85 square miles since breaking out yesterday. 150,000 people have evacuated from the paths of several fires all across Southern California. Back up here, oakland City Employees vow to be back on the picket line wednesday for day two of a strike over pay and labor practices. About 3,000 workers were off the job today. And tonight they picketed outside a fundraising event for oakland mayor libby schaaf. Abc 7 News ReporterCornell Barnard has the story. Hey hey, ho ho, libby schaaf has got to go. Reporter striking oakland city workers staged a picket line outside the law firm where mayor qulib schalibby schaaf waa fundraiser for her reelection campaign. Youre up there with your developer cronies taking money when we wanted to be bargaining with you today to prevent this strike. Dont cross our picket line reporter most of the fundraisers guests crossed the picket line to support mayor schaaf. I think the mayor is bargaining in good faith. Reporter about 3,000 oakland workers went on strike tuesday over pay and labor practices after bargaining talks for a new contract broke down. Earlier mayor schaaf called the strike unlawful. Both sides have agreed that we have not reached impasse. I really wish we were at the bargaining table today rather than dealing with the impacts of this strike. A strike which shut down most nonemergency City Services like rec centers and libraries. The union has been without a contract since june. While the city is offering a 4 wage increase this year, what happens after that is uncertain. The cost of living goes up. Were just asking for our fair share. We cannot spend money we dont have. Reporter the union says well be back on the picket line wednesday morning and they will stay there until the city returns to the bargaining table. In oakland, Cornell Barnard, abc 7 news. Tomorrow morning 29 in napa, 21 degrees in fairfield. Definitely cold enough that its going to be icy in spots on your lawns, obviously on some of the windshields. So do be prepared for some frost out there. 36 in antioch, 34 concord, down to 42 in san jose, 36 in oakland, 47 San Francisco. 30 degrees in santa rosa. Freezing cold in the morning. Were looking at widespread frost. Protect those plants, pets, and pipes, especially when were looking at those freezing conditions. I do want to turn your attention quickly to Southern California where the smoke from the devastating wildfires stretching for miles from Ventura County as youll notice on the satellite picture from this afternoon. Air quality is being impacted. Red flag warnings are up until friday night 8 00 p. M. Extreme fire danger will continue. Take a look at the wind gusts. At midnight youre looking at still some 34 to 36mileanhour wind gusts. Just south of ventura there. Thomas fire, rye fire, creek fire, those areas will be impacted by those strong winds. And that will obviously not be a good thing for the crews. It can spread those embers quickly. 7 00 a. M. Wednesday morning were still look at strong winds close to 50 miles an hour in many of those areas tomorrow night. So theyre not out of danger yet, unfortunately. Accuweather sevenday forecast, heres a look at what its going to be like tomorrow morning. Freezing cold. Low to mid 60s. Chilly in the morning with some frost. Temperatures thursday will come up into the mid to upper 60s and then minor changes as we see some high clouds and a slight dip in the numbers on friday, only to come back up again.
