And were going to start, though, with those new accusations against matt lauer. Nbc fired the today show host after a woman came forward monday evening with allegations. Now more are telling their stories. Abcs linsey davis is here with new reporting. Good morning, linsey. Reporter good morning, robin. Some of the details that have emerged are simply too graphic for morning television. There are accusations of lewd texts and comments of lauer exposing himself and one woman alleges to the New York Times that a sexual encounter in his office culminated with her passing out, and lauer having his assistant take her to a nurse. Matt lauers fall from grace casting a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a bright night at nbcs famed Christmas Tree lighting. The former anchor scrubbed from the show. The atmosphere is electric. Reporter the star with a reported 25 million a year salary now fired. And, good morning, welcome to today on a friday morning. Im matt lauer. Reporter following the female staffers allegations of Sexual Misconduct during and after the 2014 olympics in sochi. Late wednesday, two more nbc employees came forward. One telling the New York Times lauer summoned her to his office in 2001 during a workday, locked the door and sexually assaulted her. The alleged victim says she didnt report it because she felt ashamed and didnt want to lose her job. She says that he then asked her to unbutton her blouse which she did. She says he then came around from his desk, pulled down her pants and had sex with her. She says she does bear some of the responsibility for what happened, but she felt like he he was kind of using his power over her. Reporter according to the New York Times after the Sexual Assault she passed out in lauers office. He then asked his assistant to bring her to the nurse. The new allegations come after another scathing expose wednesday. Variety details the claims of several current and former anonymous nbc staffers. One of whom told reporters lauer gave her a sex toy as a present, accompanied by a note detailing how he wanted to use it on her. Another says he exposed himself to her in his office and then reprimanded her when she didnt engage. Others said he had a button under his desk that would lock his door. Variety adding, several women complained to executives at the network about his behavior, which they say fell on deaf ears. Matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie. Good morning, everyone. You carried that network on your shoulders for a lot of years so doesnt it seem safe to assume that the people at fox news were given a piece of information or given some evidence that simply made it impossible for you to stay on at fox news . Reporter but this morning, other clips are resurfacing too like this sexually driven sketch. Ah. Oh. Drink it in, ladies. Again, matt. Really. Its the third time this week. Former cohost katie couric said this about lauer in a game show lightning round in 2012. What is matts most annoying habit . He pinches me on the [ bleep ] a lot. Wow. Tmz released this video wednesday, apparently showing lauer commenting on a coworkers appearance on set. Nice sweater. Keep bending over like that. Its a nice view. Reporter this morning the today show seeming to sever all ties with lauer. His photo already scrubbed from their social media accounts. Despite claims to the contrary nbc news released a statement saying, we can say unequivocally that prior to monday night current nbc news management was never made aware of any complaints about matt lauers conduct. George. Okay, linsey, thanks. We just got a statement from matt lauer. I want to read it to you right now. Just came in on the email. He says, there are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain i have caused others by words and actions. To the people i have hurt i am truly sorry. As i am writing this i realize the depth of the damage and disappointment i have left behind at home and at nbc. Some of what is being said is untrue or mischaracterized but there is enough truth in the stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. There is more after that, but thats the nub of the statement by matt lauer for now. We are joined by the reporters who broke the story for variety, new york bureau chief, ramen setoodeh and elizabeth wagmeister. Elizabeth also works for page six tv. Elizabeth, we heard matt lauer say some of the stories have been mischaracterized. You were working on this for weeks before nbc made their move. How many women did you talk to . What did they say . We spoke to three women and multiple sources. We did dozens of interviews. We investigated this for two months and we were told some very shocking and disturbing stories which are a stark contrast to the matt lauer that everybody has known for over 20 years. We were told that he gave a sex tape to one of his former employees along with a graphic note about what he wanted to do with it. We were told that he called a woman into his office and dropped his pants, exposed himself. And when she didnt want to do anything with him, he reprimanded her. These women were scared because matt lauer had so much power. Its what were hearing with all the stories. Unfair power dynamic. It appeared to be an open secret at nbc as well from your reporting. Ramen, i want to bring this to you because we see these from the brass, andy lack said first time in 20 years hes heard a complaint and doubled down overnight saying, unequivocally there were no complaints before monday night. Thats at odds with your reporting. It is at odds with our reporting. We had talked to dozens of former and current staffers who say that there was general knowledge within all ranks of nbc between staffers, high ranking executives, other anchors that were on air with matt knowing, detailing speaking about what matt was doing pursuing women. Is this semantics here that there were no formal complaints with the Hr Department . It seems like theyre referencing paperwork as opposed to actual knowledge and i think thats where the story is headed. The question of who knew what when and many of the sources we talked to find it very hard to believe that they can issue this blanket statement saying nobody knew. This appears to have been allowed to continue because of the enormous power matt yielded both on camera and behind the scenes. Absolutely. I mean matt lauer, he makes made 25 million per year. He was there for over 20 years. He was the face of the today show. They didnt want to let anything ruin that. And it appears that from you were reporting as well that he seemed to focus on people at work. Especially in recent years. This is an important aspect of the story. The harassment occurred in the office. It occurred in his office. It occurred while he was taking work trips. It occurred in hotel rooms. This was behavior that he didnt do on his own or away from nbc. This was done within the halls of the newsroom. We were told that, you know, matt, he was very paranoid about being caught. Hes a big star. So he knew that he could be caught by tabloid reporters. Thats why he kept it within his stable and also he knew he had power there. So he was pretty assured that these women would not complain about him because he was the big man there. Youve talked to dozens of people. Expect more to come forward. So far, eight women have come forward to say roy moore sexually assaulted or harassed them. When they were teenage girls and he was in his 30s. Moore denied those accusations but many of the supporters i spoke to last night said they do not believe those women. One of moores allies in church saying last night hell take roy moores 40 years of Public Service over those two weeks of accusations. Robin. One of those supporters, steve bannon, is returning to alabama next week. Reporter robin, this is a big deal down here in alabama. Steve bannon will return to campaign with roy moore next week. The videos and the group that tweeted them have been condemned as hateful and insightful to violence but the white house insists the president was simply raising the issue of National Security. The three videos the president retweeted were originally posted by a tiny antiislam ultra nationalist party called britain first. A group known for hate filled incitement. They purport to show muslims engaged in violent acts. The office of british Prime Minister teresa may condemned the president for his tweets saying britain first seeks to divide communities through their use of hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions. It is wrong for the president to have done this. The president responded to may last night saying, dont focus on me. Focus on the destructive radical islamic terrorism that is taking place within the united kingdom. We are doing just fine. Republicans are now scrambling to negotiate changes hoping to get enough votes to finally get this done. This is a delicate and messy process. Some lawmakers are even complaining they dont know what version theyre debating. The president says wealthier americans like him will be hurt under this bill. But according to analysts that is simply not true. Wealthy americans, those making more than 100,000 a year would likely see big tax cuts while most americans earning less than 75,000 a year are projected to pay more by 2027. Now republicans can only afford to lose two votes and by our last count, more than half a dozen have serious misgivings. The one thing they seem to agree on failure is simply not an option. The 24yearold suspect due in court today and abcs Victor Oquendo has new details about his past and what theyve discovered on his cell phone. Howl Howell Emanuel donaldson. Reporter Howell Donaldson was captured tuesday after his coworker at mcdonalds told police he asked her to hold a bag containing a gun. He said he owns the gun which was purchased less than one week before the first murder, but has not admitted to committing any of the shootings. The gun is what we needed. Reporter police say donaldsons gun was used in all four murders and they say data from his cell phone was matched to three of the crime scenes, and when they searched his car, they found clothes that matched the items the suspect was wearing in these surveillance videos. The motive is going to be possibly someplace in his computers, in his phone or on social media or with Friends Associates or coworkers. Reporter last january donaldson graduated from st. Johns university in new york where he played for the basketball team. His former teammates say he was competitive but not violent. Reporter her parents think she climbed out of her bedroom window in lake city, florida saturday night leaving behind her cell phone which they think she wiped clean. Weve known him for several years through the soccer and the school and everything. Reporter police say the teens bank card was last used on sunday when she withdrew 200 from an atm in st. I think that, you know, theyre not pros at this and theyre already making a ton of rookie errors. If you are really trying to hide, they are making a lot of mistakes in terms of what you do. So, i think my prediction would be they will find them within a week. But theres a question, right, as to shes 17. Hes 27. She left voluntarily and some people say, well, whats the possible crime here . You see that the authorities are being very careful not to say he is being charged with a crime. Why . They want him to turn himself in. They want him to come forward because as of right now, we dont know if there was a physical relationship between them. If there was, that would be a crime in the state of florida based on their age, age of consent in florida is 18. There are exceptions if youre under the age of 24, which hes not. Also remember as they go state to state, he may also be committing crimes in each of those states depending on what those state laws are, as well. As weve been alluding to and heard in the piece about moving north, families there. So how do police handle that knowing they have family in the area . Theyre doing their homework. Looking at everybody and their trusted circle of friends, im sure theyre all over those people and looking at them. You know, peripheral vision and whatnot. Probably countersurveilling doing a discreet locate on these families. Its not just them but that tight circle of friends they have. Theyre traveling and have to be communicating somehow. Somebody has a device and picking up the phone. She says she wiped her phone clean and left it at home. We all know that thats not you cant wipe your phone clean. You cant wipe it but there are ways historical stuff. What kind of calls and Text Messages done prior to taking off. Theyll need money. Theyre going to need assets, right . So theyll have to figure out either how people will help them which means you have more potential witnesses or theyll have to try and get money which will lead to more possible evidence to find them. So, remember, this just happened recently. Were not talking about a long time missing persons case here. Were talking about this weekend. And thats why im confident that theyre going to find them pretty quickly. If you wanted surveillance, a camera in a pawnshop. They need money. Apparently the 200 didnt get them too far. Even though you said the police say they are not charging him because they dont want to think he did anything wrong. He knows he did something wrong. Put aside strict legalities. The fact that hes the coach at the school poses all sorts of additional potential moral and legal problems for him and for the school, et cetera, so this isnt just a 27yearold with a 17yearold. Right. This is a teacher effectively, a coach with a student. And that fundamentally changes the type of relationship youre talking about. Absolutely. If some of the neighbors had their way they would be very happy if the Fairfield Police department could in some way stop this event from occurring. Candy cane lane in woodland hills, california has been on the map for years with the whole neighborhood decorating their homes. But this year some residents are fed up by littering and disrespectful behavior from those who come visit. A friend of mine had several things stolen from her yard. Reporter today google maps says its only open for four hours a day. But back in fairfield, connecticut, a neighborly solution. Police are helping manage traffic thank you for coming. The family says this is an example of neighbors working together to find common ground. Now, the neighbor who wrote that petition, she says she never asked for it to be shut down. But after almost nearly two decades, is there a chance it might be completely shut down . The family thinks they found a solution. Its being called the glitch that stole christmas. A computer error at American Airlines allowed too many my pilots to take off during the hold days. Now thousands of flights could be affected. Our Senior Transportation correspondent david kerley is at Reagan National airport with the story. Good morning, david. Reporter george, this just tells you how much we rely on computers these days. Up to 7 million passengers could have been affected by this computer glitch. Were talking about 15,000 flights according to the pilots union that were affected by this computer glitch. Now, heres what happened. Pilots have the opportunity to opt out of a flight on this computer system, but because of the glitch, they were able to get out of flights when they were needed, and thats a problem for American Airlines. They ended up with this shortage of pilots and now trying to figure out how they can get all these pilots back on the schedule for the last two weeks of december so that everybody can get home for the holidays. American has been scrambling for the past five days working to find pilots for all those flights that are scheduled and theyre making some progress, george. Filling the hole going to cost some money . Reporter its going to cost them a lot of money. They say they have some reserve pilots that will fill some of these flights. They wont tell us exactly how many flights. Its the union that says its 15,000 and theyre paying time and a half to get the pilots to take those scheduled flights to get them back in the cockpits. So bringing it home everybody who is flying, that should passengers do . Reporter so there is advice that we can give you. First of all lets say American Airlines is saying they dont think theyre going to have to cancel any flights. In a statement they say that they are working to make sure that everybody gets to where they want to go at the end of next month during the holidays, the last two weeks of december. The best advice, george, is probably wait a week, check to make sure your flight is still scheduled. American is telling us they dont expect to cancel any flights. Sounds like it could be okay. His longtime cohost Savannah Guthrie read his statement. It is a difficult morning here again because our top story is once again about our former colleague, matt lauer. And, in fact, we just moments ago received a statement from matt. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized. But there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people i cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and im committed to beginning that effort. It is now my fulltime job. Back now on gma and Sexual Misconduct scandals, as you know, rocking so many Different Industries and raising a lot of questions about how parents should talk to their children. And the most recent involving matt lauer and children are used to seeing morning tv hosts in their homes every morning and they can even feel like a part of the family and psychiatrist janet taylor is here to help us answer some of these questions so thank you, janet for joining us. You know, a lot of these people being accused are well known in the home and kids see them every morning and im sure children have questions. How should parents address them . You want to find out what they do know. You certainly dont want to lay too much on them. Keep it basic related to how hold they are but also tie it into other aspects, maybe harassment that theyve had if its bullying or even sexual questions that they have so that you can dont take keep it so far externally they cant relate to it. If you have a son or daughter, the conversation is different depending. Well, yes and no. I mean certainly we want to talk about the Emotional Health of our children because we know when they can identify their feelings theyre more apt to relate to the emotional feelings of other people, and we have to look at how we have this boys will be boys and boys dont cry, and really tune into our boys Emotional Health as well. What is your advice for teaching kids how to stand up for themselves if they are experiencing inappropriate behavior . We need to teach them that no means no and if they have something that happens to them and if its a question, a comment, a touch that makes them feel confused that makes them feel angry and shame they need to be able to talk to us about it. Which means as parents we need to listen and take action. I imagine it is age appropriate. You have to, of course, take into consideration, the age of your child. Certainly, but our kids are exposed to more and more at younger ages, and know our preteens and adolescents certainly have a lot more Sexual Harassment type of things that happen to them, so its real and just because theyre young doesnt mean that they cant be exposed to it as well. On the flip side of that, say, if your child, you find out your child is the harasser, how do you approach that . You have to stop that behavior immediately and help them understand how the other person feels, find out what theyre feeling and enforce consequences and teach them how to be empathetic which means they understand how other people feel. Bottom line this for us. If youre a parent and, you know, like, well, you cant pick up your phone, you cant turn on tv without seeing Something Like this. Well, as parents we need to take a breath because theres always something. But its about being mindful of what we expose our children to because most of what happens related to drama still happens in the home. Be mindful of that, but also help them be good and kind people and listen to them. Always keep the door of communication open. Yeah. Very important. That is very important and also we got to feed our own souls. I know you moved to florida not too long ago. Things are going well. Its well. I have gratitude every single day, i love my job, the people, the sunshine, but, you know, its still real life and so i mean just because you live somewhere youre not insulated from what happens so its about balance. Were tracking whats going on in the Southern Hemisphere as a preview as what will come here in the next couple of months and numbers out of australia as of midoctober are concerning. What theyre showing is about over 200,000 cases of flu, compare that to what they saw in 2009 when the h 59,000, this is concerning. And the current circulating strain which is in this years vaccine showing the vaccine only thought to be 10 effective. You hear that, it sounds bad. Better than zero percent. If you look at this map this is the current activity in the United States right now. Things are pretty quiet. Its early but we are seeing high flu activity in the south, louisiana and mississippi. You do tell us all to get the flu shot. Ive gotten mine this year but surprising to see only 10 effective. Its the worst vaccine we have and thats why theres so much interest and research and need to develop whats called a universal vaccine. Right now the flu vaccine takes a long time to develop. Its grown in chick egg, adaptations can occur in that process that make it not a great vaccine, but let me show you why theres so much interest in developing whats called a universal vaccine, and want to use the roses as an example. If i give you this bouquet you know theyre roses but there are different colors to the rose petals. You can think of those like the circulating strains but there are also leaves, stems, thorns. In the development of a universal vaccine, you would almost cut the color of the rose appella petals off. You still know that these are roses, you still have the stems, the leaves and the thorns and thats what a universal vaccine would ago like. Its actually a more general vaccine that you would only need once in your life. You still know those are roses. Were not there yet. What can you do . For right now, we have to be clear. Still get vaccinated. 10 efficacy is get better than 0 and people can get sick and die of the flu. You have to practice good hand hygiene. We hear that again and again. Wash your hands often. I didnt know anything. Ive never heard the name Tonya Harding before. I read the script and when i read the script i thought it was complete fiction and i thought it was i was like, wow, this is so creative coming up with this crazy, bizarre stuff and love the fake mockumentary style and then i found out it was all true and i was blown away and fascinated. Did you have the chance to meet her. I did. I met her right before we started shooting. And . It was great, yeah. I had done all my character prep beforehand and decided exactly how i was going to play the character and i kind of wanted to keep her and the character separate so i waited till the last minute to meet her. Thats interesting. Its not a facsimile. Because theres so much footage of her already like interviews when shes 15 to 44 when i play her from 15 to 44, i could and everything in between i could do all my research i could study her manner itches and accent and everything i did six months of studying her and then which met her i wanted to meet her as a person. Did she have any special requests or no, she was great about it. I mean we said to her this isnt a traditional biopic. Not traditional at all and its not a documentary, you know, its a feature film and we feed to have liberty on set to really run with these characters and let them do their own thing in that space and she was really understanding about it and really lovely. She asked me like how i was going with the skate training and was honestly more worried about me than i was about her. She was like do you need help . I can help train you if you want. Do you have your skates with you . How much did you train for it . I covered the story when working at espn and which was seeing the movie i was seeing tonya. How much [ applause ] thank you. It was all me. [ laughter ] it wasnt. We replicaed all her skate routines like to the move so hopefully people who do remember it will look at it on youtube and kind of see the comparison the triple axel. The triple axel. Even if i had 20 years to train, i was never going to be able to do a triple axel and in fact no one could. Not even our skate doubles. They couldnt even do a triple axel so we were like, well, surely no, ive never even attempted a triple axel and sold we had to cgi. Only six women in the world have done a triple axel since tonya did 25 years ago. The First American woman to do it in competition. Its amazing. You want to see some of the film . Lets see it. Oh, my god. I mean, it was totally the most awesomest thing. Leading up to it, youre like, i cant do it. I cant. I cant. Bam. I can. All those people who said i couldnt make it, well, [ muted ]. I did. I proved every one of them. [ applause ] so nailed the look. And i understand that you sort of got into the 90s of it all. I did. Everyone keeps asking did you take anything with you from set. I was like the scrunchies. Ing took so many scrunchies with me. I wear them all the time and started dressing very 90s as well. Rubbed off on you. And the skating, you touched on it. Much of it is you. You were a hockey player which i didnt know. Yeah, i mean that makes me sound like im really [ applause ] ice hockey. I played ice hockey when i first came to america because i always wanted to do it when i was a kid but there was no ice where i grew up. I come from the gold coast, very coastal town but, yeah, figure skating and ice hockey it turns out are very different feats. A toe pick on those skates which i found out very quickly and got no padding on so when you fell, when you fall its painful. Big rangers fan. Big rangers fan. [ applause ] go, rangers. Everybody is talking about me. It was a shock. It was a big surprise but i think there are much bigger surprises in the last jedi. The most important line he says this is not going to go the way you think. Oh, wow. When i read the script i was stunned. These films now are being made by people that were children when the first films came out. Theyre the generation that grew up and as fans and now are in charge of the franchise and its just wonderful to be associated with something that makes people so happy and is escapism. You know, people want to get away from we dont want real life. Its too harsh and thats what im in. Im in the escapism business. But youve been at this since 1977 so what made you come back for this new generation of flips . Well, it was kind of intimidating because we never expected that we thought if they do another trilogy it wouldnt involve any of our characters. It would be all new characters. So i thought, well, its all or nothing. Its got to be harrison and carrie and all of us. I said, well, harrison will never do it. Hes so accomplished and, you know, i thought for sure that he would say no. When i read in the paper he signed for Harrison Ford i said to my wife, well, ive been drafted. Me too. Theres no turning it down now. [ applause ] you mentioned Carrie Fisher. She makes her final appearance in this latest film. Oh, carrie. You all were friends for 40 years. Yeah. How would you describe your relationship with carrie . It was it was intense because we blew hot and cold. We hate to admit we were more like each other than we would have said ourselves, in fact, when we found out we were twins we both went, are you kidding me . Youre just doing this to top the i thought you guys were romantic. It really bothered me. What, theyre brother and sister. Imagine how i felt.
