The pilots union says about 15,000 American Airlines flights were scheduled without a captain, a copilot, or both. The airline says it expects to avoid canceling flights by paying time and a half and using reserve pilots. The pilots union filed a grievance saying the premium pay was not covered by its contract and the airline couldnt guarantee payment. Passengers are keeping an eye on whats happening. They can convict jose Ines Garcia Zarate of first or seconddegree murder or of Involuntary Manslaughter or they, of course, can find him not guilty. Zarate was set to be deported. He has a criminal record. But San Franciscos sanctuary city law protected him and allowed him to stay. A legal expert told us if hes found not guilty he will still have immigration issues. I would imagine that there is a federal hold on the defendant already so that if he is acquitted he will be taken into federal custody. Reporter kate steinle is the victim in this case. She was shot and killed while strolling with her father at pier 14 about two years ago here in San Francisco. Zarate says the gun he was carrying accidentally went off. New this morning san jose firefighters had to rescue a man trapped inside a car that rolled over on the side of northbound highway 101. Here is a look at the scene. You can see the car flipped over with its wheels in the air. The vehicle rolled down into a ditch near the tule road exit. It took firefighters nearly half an hour to get the man out of the car. He was put on a stretcher and take tone a nearby hospital. We dont know right now how hes doing. Its part of a proposed change to a San Francisco municipal Transportation Program that adjusts meter rates based on demand. Right now that demand system is being used on 7,000 meters. It could soon expand to every meter in the city. Most meters would top out at 8 an hour. But for special events the meters could go up as high as 18. Happening today one of the two men who escaped from a palo alto courthouse will be arraigned. Federal marshals tracked john bivins to a hotel on sunday. He had been on the run since november 6th. Bivins escaped police in stockton last week speeding past officers in a dead end street. They taught the second fugitive at a nearby walmart. He faces federal charges in addition to the Armed Robbery charge he was originally in jail for. 11 people will need to find another place to stay after fire raced through two Mission District buildings. The flames broke out at a home on shotwell just before 7 00 last night. The fire spread next door in no time. It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the flames under control and the cause is still under investigation.
