Announcer live where you live, this is abc 7 news. Terror in new york. I see people running and screaming. A driver plows through packs of people. Hes in the bike lane. Now eight are dead. You could tell that theyre not here no more. The deadliest terror attack in new york since 9 11. We have been tested before. Tonight the city is standing strong. New yorkers do not give in. Good evening. Im dan ashley. And im dion lim. At least 11 more people were injured, and that includes suspect sayfullo saipov, who was shot by an officer. Abc News Reporter maggie ruehle is in new york with the latest. Reporter dan and dion, that truck traveled a full ten cities blocked barreling down the sidewalk until it finally came to a stop just a couple of blocks from us here. Now were seeing a Massive Police presence in downtown manhattan. New yorks halloween parade. Tens of thousands of people out in the streets defying an act of terror. We know that this action was intended to break our spirit. Reporter this man accused of turning a truck into a deadly weapon. Weve got multiple casualties. This is a mass casualty situation here. Reporter in the middle of a Sunny Afternoon the rental truck deliberately hitting pedestrians and bicyclists, plowing 3 4 of a mile toward ground zero. Only coming to a stop after hitting a school bus. The suspect then getting out of the vehicle. I saw a guy he had two guns on him and he was just running in the street. Reporter fake firearms, a paintball and a pellet gun. Witnesses say the suspect shouting allahu akbar. I start hearing ten gunshots, one after another, very fast. Zbla Uniformed Police officer assigned to the first precinct confronted the subject and shot him in the abdomen. Reporter the suspect was transported to a hospital along with many innocent victims. Some of them now lists in critical condition. Authorities say the suspect left behind a note saying he committed the act on beavenue of isis. In new york maggie ruehle, abc 7 news. Saipov has been arrested before. This mugshot was taken in missouri in 2016 after he failed to show up to court for an unpaid traffic citation. Tonight uber confirmed he did drive for that ridesharing service. He cleared a background check. Uber released a statement saying, we are horrified by this senseless act of violence. Our hearts are with the victims and their families. We have reached out to Law Enforcement to provide our full assistance. Now, the president sent out a series of tweets tonight. His latest says, i have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already extreme vetting program. Being politically correct is fine but not for this. San Francisco Police put out a statement saying theyre monitoring the incident in new york city and that there are no known threats to San Francisco at this time. It happened just after 8 00 at t sloat boulevard and 36th avenue. The driver remained on the scene. You can see the windshield is nearly caved in. Police say the victim is an adult male but they are not revealing much amore, citing th continuing investigation. In walnut creek tonight one person is confirmed dead in a grisly traffic accident. The chp says witnesses saw two cars traveling westbound on treat boulevard moving very fast. They collided and wound up against a tree. You can see this terrible wreckage. Two people were injured and taken to the hospital. All lanes on treat boulevard are closed between bancroft and cherry lane. Investigators are now sorting through what happened in a sunnyvale neighborhood. A Police Officer shot and killed a stabbing suspect near bayshore freeway and fair oaks avenue. A police dog was also killed. Abc 7 News Reporter Katie Marzullo is there right now and has this report. Katie . Reporter dion, investigators have cleared the scene. They were here for about nine hours. People who live here during that time couldnt even drive all the way into their parking garages and they certainly did not expect to come home to police tape. So thats this man just moved to encasa apartments a week ago. Now his view is a crime scene. Kind of pretty scary. I mean, i thought this apartment was pretty safe. The area is pretty good. Reporter at 1 00 in the afternoon the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety got a call that there had been a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found an injured woman. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. Inside one of the units police encountered the stabbing suspect. Police are still investigating exactly what happened. For now theyre only saying the suspect was armed with a knife and uncooperative. A solo officer fired his duty weapon at the suspect, striking the suspect, who was transported to the hospital. Later succumbing to his injuries. Reporter officers say before the shooting the suspect went after their dog. A police k9 was involved in an altercation with the suspect. The k9 was subsequently stabbed and injured. Reporter the German Shepherd was taken to a vet, but he died. Whats the point of stabbing the poor dog . The dog didnt do anything to him. So i was a little upset about the stabbing of the k9. Reporter police say the suspect was in his mid 20s. Theyre not saying what his relationship was to the woman who was stabbed. In sunnyvale, Katie Marzullo, abc 7 news. Seven people were arrested at cal state fullerton, where rightwing commentator milo yeenon los spoke tonight. Dozens of protesters got into scuffles with milos rightwing supporters. Police fired pepper spray at the crowd then formed a line to move them out. A driverless runaway dump truck hit 12 cars and injured two people while careening down a steep San Francisco street. Sky map 7 shows you the streets where it happened. The truck rumbled down difference dero and stopped when it hit a tree on valero street. Otherwise it might have been more damage. Pieces of smashed cars littered divisadero. Police say the driver was loading concrete on the truck but the vehicle couldnt handle the wait. Time is about to run out. Californias new gas tax is about to kick in. Abc 7 News Reporter Lisa Amin Gulezian explains where your money is going. Reporter at gas stations across the bay drivers are topping off. I might fill the rest of the tank. Reporter because come wednesday californias gas tax goes up. Youll pay an additional 12 cents per gallon. The increase approved by the state Legislature Last spring is expected to raise more than 5. 2 billion a year over the next decade. The money will be used to repair the states crumbling roads and bridges, improve mass transit, and expand bike lanes. Sp1 is like a booster shot to finally start fixing that mess that we call the daily commute throughout the bay area. Reporter Carl Guardino of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group also serves on the ninemember california transportation commission. Were going to have a permanent, steady source of funds for improvements that have been neglected for more than three decades. Reporter with the expected revenue from sb1, dozens of transportation projects are now being fasttracked statewide. In the south bay a nearly 69 million pavement preservation project will improve lanes on highway 87 from 85 to west julian street in san jose. Another 19 million will help repair highway 17 from Scotts Valley to the Santa Clara Valley line. I spend 2 1 2 hours a day on that road. At some point i would like it to be good. Supporters say theyre willing to pay a little extra as long as the work actually gets done. According to officers, the father of a firstgrade student punched someone in the face. That man then barricaded himself in a classroom and held a 70yearold teacher hostage. A s. W. A. T. Team was called. The campus evacuated. After six hours officers swarmed the school, set off flashbang grenades, and shot the man. The teacher was not hurt. Well, the north bay wildfires are now fully contained. Californias insurance commissioner says Property Damage losses from those fires have topped 3. 3 billion. And according to the press democrat that makes them the costliest wildfires not only in california but u. S. History. And the California Public Utilities Commission is revealing a report from pg e that said at least 17 electric Safety Incidents occurred the night the fire started. In that report obtained by the Bay Area News Group pg e blames downed trees and heavy winds for damaging power lines and other equipment. The company says the information in that report is preliminarily preliminary and there has been no determination on the cause of the fires. In the north bay tonight halloween was all about the treats. No tricks at all. Treats and enormous kindness too. The Biggest Party happened right here in old Courthouse Square tonight. Up to 1,000 families treated to a fun, free halloween event. Exactly what many folks needed. All right reporter bowling a strike felt great. There were lots of games and prizes for kids, who needed a Halloween Party now more than ever. We could play games and eat candy. It was a very scary ordeal. Reporter most every family has a scary story about the night fires forced them from their homes. This event called a heros halloween, a chance for hundreds of displaced families to have some fun. Let the kids kind of get out, not have to think about maybe what their home looks like or doesnt look like anymore. Steven lee lives in coffee park, devastated by fire. Its great because we have no place to go. You know, we would have to go and look around, find new places. And we can just come downtown. Its awesome. Happy halloween. Neighbor tina taika wanted to do something more than candy for displaced families. So she ordered a bounce house, lots of games, and put the word out on social media. This is what we wanted. We just wanted them to have fun and enjoy themselves and forget about whats been going on in our community. At the quf Russian Rivers owner, 50 other breweries have stepped up to create their own sonoma pride brews. Russian river has also raised 250,000 from a raffle that lets the winners cut in line to taste the iconic bear pliny the younger. There are plenty of ways you can help fire victims. On friday do expect a chance of some mixed precipitation in the afternoon. In the tahoe area. But by evening youre going to be seeing a mix of rain and snow. Saturday is definitely going to be a wintry mix. And sunday winterlike chill. 37 degrees in the afternoon. 30 in the morning. If youre heading up to the mountains, make sure you have your chains because you will need them. And be prepared for Winter Driving conditions. Heres a look at the winter storm wooch that is going up. Friday evening through sunday morning one to three feet expected for the highest elevations. Expect those travel delays and reduced visibility. Now, up to eight inches of snow is expected at the 6500foot level. Heres a look at the snowfall projection.
