Formal charges have now been filed against three former advisers of the Trump Campaign. Including exCampaign ChairmanPaul Manafort who is now under house arrest, after pleading not guilty to a 12 count indictment. Then rick gates, you see him there facing the same charges once served as the Deputy Campaign manager, also pleading not guilty. And were seeing the first signs of a case for possible collusion. Foreign policy adviser to the Trump Campaign, George Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty for lying to the fbi about his contact with russia. Court papers show that he acknowledged that a professor told him the russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton. Papadopoulos talked about trying to arrange a meeting between then candidate trump and russian president Vladimir Putin and he said several Trump Officials knew he was talking to the russians about helping that campaign at the time. So much scandal there in washington. And President Trump is reportedly fuming over these indictments. Sources say he woke up early and watched it all play out on the news. And on twitter he tried to turn it to Hillary Clinton and declare there is no collusion. And the white house is down playing the role of the president s former advisers. Heres abcs jonathan karl. Reporter the white house was blindsided by this news. Sources tell abc news the president had no advance notice from the special counsel. First reaction from the president himself with his tweet dismissing the indictment of the man who ran his campaign. Sorry, but this is years ago. Before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump Campaign. Why arent crooked hillary and the dems the focus . Also, there is no collusion. And, in fact, there is nothing about collusion or the campaign in the Manafort Indictment. What the president didnt know is there was another shoe to drop. Special counsel mueller later revealing his plea deal with George Papadopoulos, the campaign Foreign Policy adviser who in fact was take talking with russians about getting dirt on Hillary Clinton. Weve been saying from day one theres no evidence of trump russia collusion and nothing in the indictment today changes that at all. But George Papadopoulos agreement is about the campaign. It is specifically about the campaign. It has nothing to do with the activities of the campaign. It has to do with his failure to tell the truth. Reporter sanders said papadopoulos had an extremely limited role in the campaign. But again, there he is, three seats from donald trump. Look, this individual was the member of a volunteer Advisory Council that met one time over the course of a year. He was not paid by the campaign. Reporter its not the first time the white house has sought to downplay the role of someone on the campaign. This is what they said about Paul Manafort who spent five months on team trump, including three as Campaign Chairman. Obviously, theres this discussion of Paul Manafort who played a very limited role for a very limited amount of time. Jon, hold on. Can you stop interrupting other people . Jonathan, somebodys asking a question. Its not your press briefing. Reporter the white house downplayed muellers indictment, the president himself is making a case that the real subject of the russia investigation should be Hillary Clinton. The president tweeting sunday there is so much guilt by democrats, clinton, and now the facts are pouring out. Do something and what will the president do if mueller continues to focus on his associates and not clintons . Is he going to rule out once and for all firing Robert Mueller . The president said last week, i believe it was last week, and ive said several times before, theres no intention or plan to make any changes in regards to the special counsel. Reporter the White House Press secretary was also asked whether or not the president would consider issuing pardons for either Paul Manafort or rick gates. The answer was interesting. She said, quote, i think we should let the process play through before we start looking at those steps. In other words, the white house is not ruling out issuing pardons. Jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. Jonathan, thank you. And a hearing for manafort and gates is scheduled for thursday. Manafort posted a 10 million bond. For gates, its 5 million. Theyre now restricted to their homes and must check in with the marshals every day. Abc news chief news analyst dan abrams weighs in on the idea that the investigation will end soon. I dont think theres any way to look at that plea agreement with papadopoulos and conclude this is going to end anytime soon. The reason that they made that deal, when you read through the statement of facts and you read through the agreement, it is clear they cut that deal so they could investigate others, so this could be part of a broader investigation. And dan says with papadopoulos, Robert Mueller is going for the little fish first and may also be trying to put pressure on manafort and gates to get information on other key trump associates. The investigation is also affecting some democrats. Powerful washington lobbyist tony podesta is stepping down as head of his lobbying firm. He lobbied on behalf of his ukrainian clients. The firm has said it did not know it was working on behalf of a foreign government. Tonys brother, john podesta managed Hillary Clintons campaign. And clinton herself isnt commenting directly on the first indictments in the mueller probe. She was in the chicago area yesterday promoting her book. At one event, all she would say about the indictments was that the book contains a great chapter about russia but later she said President Trump is not looking out for u. S. National security and, quote, we know everything we need to know. Representatives on facebook will testify on capitol hill today about russianlinked content on its servers during last years election. A top facebook lawyer will tell senators a Russian Group posted more than 80,000 times during and after the election. The content may have reached up to 126 million people.
