Thousands of students will be heading back to school this morning after the devastating north bay fires. More than a dozen schools are reopening. Many students and staff, of course, personally affected by the fires. Abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield live at piner high school. Reporter hi, good morning. 80 students here lost their homes, and so did four staff members. This is one of 13 schools in santa rosa that will be reopening today. A good sign that the city is getting back on its feet. Here is a look, also, at the rebuilding process going on across the city at a Community Meeting last night. Residents are wondering what happens next. They were told that the army corps of engineers will start removing fire debris from about 5,000 properties. So its in charge of that and it says during that process it will monitor the air quality 24 7 during this cleanup. Well be monitoring at schools as well as on the site to ensure those contaminants not being spread. Reporter but first the epa will go to work, start removing Hazardous Waste from the coffey park neighborhood that will start today. We turn to breaking news in san jose, a fire burning a popular fast food restaurant. Abc 7 News Reporter matt keller just arrived. Matt, what can you tell us . Reporter good morning, natasha and reggie. Were on croply avenue at north capital avenue. This is a kfc that went up in flames this morning. It happened at about 4 30, and firefighters called out two alarms. So a lot of firefighters here on the scene. You have two ladder trucks up in the air. But no water coming from them. Theyre all fighting this from the ground. Theyre fighting it from outside of this building. You can see that a lot of smoke is still coming up. They knocked down the flames. But now theyre trying to get make sure they get the flames that are burning inside the building and up in the roof area here at this kfc. They blocked off croply avenue in both directions off north capital avenue. Were near 680, a mile and a half away from the great mall here in san jose. Theyll be out here for a while as they work on the fire. Firefighters bringing down one of the ladder trucks so it appears theyre not going to be fighting this from the sky but will be working from the ground with those chainsaws and digging into that roof and into the attic here and trying to get these flames out as this fire broke out in the middle of the night here in san jose. Firefighters are inside working on getting the fire out in the ceiling and attic space. Check out the video from earlier this morning. Big flames on cropley avenue here in san jose. Firefighters were putting water on it and getting chainsaws into the building trying to make sure they got all the wood down that they could to get the fire out from within the building. I talked with the captain here of the Fire Department and he told me that this is unusual because it started in the dining area of the restaurant not the kitchen area. So he told me they would have to investigate and try to figure out how this was started. He says it is a possibility that there could be some electrical causes but also the possibility causes but also the possibility this could be arson as well. The flames were not able to spread to others so they were able to knock it down before it was able to spread. And they will be out here for a long time. Cropley avenue is blocked off right now so you will have to find another way around. Matt, thank you. Four people in custody after Police Say One of them impersonated a police officer. They used something that sounded like a police siren. Now the man said someone got out of the car and put a hood on. Thats when the man drove off and called police. The suspect car was later stopped for an unrelated traffic violation. The driver was arrested for impersonating a police officer. Another man was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. New this morning, the president going after San Francisco Billionaire Tom Steyer on twitter known for being a huge fundraiser and activist for the Democratic Party and has been spending millions of dollars running ads calling for the president s impeachment. The president tweeted a short time ago saying, quote, unhinged tom steyer who has been fighting me and my make America Great agenda from beginning, never wins elections. Steyer was the founder of one California Bank and i want to show you this. A tweet was sent out a short time ago. Ive been checking tom steyers account. No response yet this morning. The santa cruz Sheriffs Department will release information about a possible arrest in the bear fire. The sentinel reports the Sheriffs Office is preparing to arrest the person believed to have started it. Cal fire says First Responders immediately knew it was suspicious. The agency announced the bear fire is fully contained and burned under 400 acres near the town of boulder creek. The fires burning in napa and sonoma. The latest report has the nuns fire at 94 contained. The atlas fire 98 contained. The tubbs fire which burned at santa rosa, 95 contained. In Southern California crews are battling a 350acre wildfire. Take a look at the flames there. The l. A. Times reporting an 18yearold motorcyclist crashed into a tree and that is what sparked the fire yesterday afternoon in the Cleveland National forest. This is northeast of san diego. The motorcyclist had only minor injuries. There are a handful of homes now evacuated. All the fires happening in napa and all around, theres so much going on. How fast that went through. Were not being dumb. We dont want to be over panicked at the same time. Right now the fire is only 15 contained. Testimony is set to resume on monday in the trial after man charged with the murder of kate steinle. The federal park ranger whose stolen gun killed her woychowski said he felt it was safe to leave it in his suv. Defense attorneys claim the gun went off accidentally after suspect Jose Ines Garcia zarate found it wrapped in cloth. Prosecutors say Garcia Zarate fired the weapon on purpose. This morning a father is in jail facing several charges after his 8yearold son brought a loaded gun to school. San ramone Police Arrested Anthony Odonnell at his home. An 8yearold brought the gun to twin creeks elementary in his backpack and showed it to a friend. That classmate told a parent. The parent told police. Neighbors are understandably very surprised. The boys friends are i dont think ill play with him. Im not sure why they did that. I think its a bad thing because they could have hurt somebody. The father of five is charged with child endanger many and allowing a firearm to be accessible to a child. Bail is set at 140,000. B. A. R. T. Says its time to play hardball with fare evaders. Last night the board of directors voted to start a proof of payment system. That means riders will be required to show tickets to fare inspectors or police. Its an attempt to cut into the estimated 25 million the agency says it loses every year to people cheating the system. Free on just one day. 5 37 now and happening today the Golden Gate Bridge District Board is set to vote on reconstruction of the 11 million sausalito ferry terminal. A committee voted yesterday to approve construction. A full board will discuss today. As the plan stands now reconstruction would include a rail along the gangway passengers walk to board and widened to 12 feet, more than twice its current width. Tomorrow morning cal train is slated to bring down two more piers. No cars will be allowed on the bay bridge for about 30 minutes during the blasting people which is expected to start around 9 30 in the morning. On ashby avenue on thursday of last week, the man drove a mercedes sedan with paper plates from a dealership. Police tell us it all started when the victim was riding in another car and yelled at the suspect about his erratic driving. Two women and their two dogs were rescued this week after being lost at sea for more than five months. Jennifer appel and tasha fuiava were overjoyed to see uss ashland on wednesday. The women had set sail from honolulu in the spring bound for tahiti but their engine broke. They used their marine radio to call for help every day but no ships were close to them. A taiwanese fishing boat heard their distress call southeast of japan. Over the last five months the women survived three massive storms and two shark attacks. Both of them we actually thought it was lights out, and they were horrific. The women had water purifiers on their boat and a whole years worth of food, so they you cant fault them, they were prepared. I dont fault them at all. I think theyre incredible. I dont know if i would have made it to be honest. What about woodstock . My dog would have made it. I wouldnt have. A ski resort in the high sierra is set to open this morning. It does seem weird but mst rose will open a beginner run. Its been so warm here that did not fall naturally from the sky. Theyre hoping they will open other slopes with real snow eventually. It will be open from 8 00 to 9 00 today and tomorrow. It looks like weather could be in the forecast that would help them open additional slopes. Maybe a foot at least. Maybe more depending on the level. A look at the weekend forecast for next week. The whole weather pattern changes. We get temperatures back to average, even cooler than average. Friday morning we start off with drizzle and light rain and then it picks up during the evening and overnight hours becoming moderate to possibly heavy at times.
