And now more help is on the way in the form of rain as the seasons first storm arrives in the bay area. Good evening. Im kristen sze in for ama da z daetz. And im dan ashley. Showers are moving into the bay area. A live look at the bay bridge here. By this time tomorrow night, this view should be a soggy one. Lets get the latest on the timing of it from abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. Dan and kristen, this storm is sorely needed for the firefighters. Lets take a look at live doppler 7. You will notice this is a cold storm that will be coming out of the gulf of alaska. I do want to show you theres a large plume of moisture that is aimed directly at the Pacific Northwest where theyre getting some good rainfall. As we take a look at the rainfall amounts up to the north, over an inch. We will get our share with this level one storm. Its a light storm on our storm impact scale, arrives tomorrow afternoon, evening. Light to moderate rain. Higher humidity. Right now on the fire lines, winds are light to calm. At the bear fire and also in the north bay where all those fires have been burning, the winds are also light there. This storm will not only give those firefighters a helping hand but also will help to douse some of those flames. Sandhya, thanks very much. Developing news. Hundreds of people are out of their homes tonight because of the bear fire. Its burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains near boulder creek, and its just 15 contained. Katie marzullo is live in the the Evacuation Center in los gatos with the latest. Katie . Reporter dan, the fire has burned 300 acres and there have been some setbacks in the fire fight. An arrest, a drone incident, and another firefighter was hurt. This is just one example of what firefighters are dealing with on their second day in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A burning tree ten feet around and 200 feet high. It had to be cut down. Hot spots linger throughout the burn area. Some homes are untouched by fire. Others are leveled. This crew is from oregon, and this is not the first fire theyve battled in california this week. Once we got on the road from oregon, we were to go to anaheim. Then they shipped us down to san diego. Reporter he said another 50 engines from oregon were sent to the fires in the north bay. Ive been in the fire service for 25 years, and its really the first time that weve sent this many resources this far down south. Reporter there are nearly 900 firefighters battling the bear fire on the ground and from above, but the aircraft had to be temporarily grounded tuesday because of a drone. If we cant use those tools, it really slows down progress and puts lives at jeopardy. Reporter seven firefighters have been hurt. The most recent, an inmate firefighter taken from the scene by ambulance. Another problem, looting. Santa cruz cant sheriffs deputies arrested marlin coy. Hes suspected of burglarize ago i house in the evacuation area. Denise is one of the hundreds of people who had to leave their home. Thats when it hit me. I just started crying and it was like, wow, wow. This is a trip because now we could lose everything. Reporter she just moved to the mountains two weeks ago. Her house is still standing. In los gatos, katie marzullo,ance 7 news. Ten days after they began, thousands more evacuees were allowed to return home today. Progress is being made to fully contain the fires. In sonoma county, the nuns fire is 80 contained. The tubbs fire is 91 contained. And the atlas fire in napa county is 84 contained. Reporter kristen, homeowners are trying to put all this behind them by focusing on whats ahead. Thats getting things in order to rebuild as fast as they can. Everything related to her recovery is neatly organized and color coded. Like thousands of other people, sylvia lost her coffey park home in the fire. She lived on hennessy place and is determined to live there again as soon as possible. Im a single mom. So i have a son that i need to make sure that he knows that were going to be okay. Reporter in santa rosa alone, the fire destroyed more than 2,800 structures. City leaders say they plan to cut the red tape not only to help people rebuild but to create more units in what was already a tight market. How do they walk into our Planning Department and get a permit that day to go rebuild the current footprint of their home to help them get it up as quickly as possible. I want our permitting department to be that fast. Reporter governor jerry brown is also trying to speed things along. Today he issued an executive order suspending planning and zoning requirements as well as state fees for manufactured homes to mobile home parks, sylvia thinks 2 will take a year or two for her house to be completed. I got to look at the bright side. I lost everything. Its time for me to start over, and i want to rebuild. I wouldnt want to be anywhere else but sonoma county. Meanwhile, some residents of the yountville Veterans Home returned home today more than a week after they were evacuated. 133 people were taken by ambulance, bus, and car last tuesday night. The residents have spent the past week at other facilities in northern california. Officials say the fire danger has eased, and the main reason residents were evacuated was the intense smoke. Sonoma State University resumed classes today with a thank you ceremony honoring First Responders to the north bay fires. Students and faculty unfurled a thank you banner with hundreds of messages of gratitude left by the sonoma state community. The colleges very own president lost her santa rosa home in the fires, escaping with her husband barefoot. The fires may not have shown regard for anyone, but our Community Shows its regard for everyone. Reporter the campus had been shut down for ten days ever since the wildfires erupted. And in parts of napa, scorched by fire, evacuations have been lifted and residents are seeing their homes for the first time in ten days. Abc7 news anchor dion lim is in wine country live tonight with the story. Reporter dan, at about 2 00 this afternoon, drivers started coming to this gas station where im standing, filling up their tanks for the very first time in anticipation of seeing their homes for the First Time Since the evacuation order. I can tell you those we talked with say theyre not only grateful that their homes are standing, but also unsure about what the future holds. The devastation just coming down the hill for the first time from the house was just terrible. Reporter thats the sentiment shared by so many in napa tonight. The ones returning to their homes for the very First Time Since a mandatory evacuation nine days ago. We just got back here. We finally got our gas on. Reporter for carter nielson, being home is bittersweet. Relief his home is still standing. We got very lucky and kept our house. The fire is so close. Reporter but a painful reminder of the flames. We got some pictures of it at its at the top of the hill, by 10 30, its almost to the bottom and getting here real fast. Reporter as residents started heading home, the work continues for the countless volunteers with the napa valley barbecue foundation. So far theyve served 31,000 meals to anyone who needed one. We set out to, you know, nationally feed about 400 to 800 people, and, you know, its shocking. Reporter tonight its apparent. For every meal served, every return home, there is so much work left to be done. But there is a sense of community in napa that keeps everyone forging ahead. The officer was on bike patrol when an suv hit him on turk near van ness avenue just before 12 30 this afternoon. The suspect was arrested after a threehour manhunt at ellis and leaven worth street. The car was found abandoned near buena vista park. The officer was rushed to zuckerberg San Francisco general. He was patrolling the tenderloin when he was run down. Everyone is obviously taking it hard. I just spoke with some of the officers from the affected station, and everyone right now is having a tough time with this. So i ask the public to keep the officer in their prayers. The suspects name has not been released, but this is video of him being arrested. He was being investigated for a firearms violation. A uc Berkeley Student says she was sexually assaulted in a dorm room. Uc police say it happened in the unit one residence hall. The 18yearold says she met her attacker at a Fraternity Party and was assaulted around 2 00 a. M. Sunday morning. Police say they currently have no description of the suspect. Now to the disputed phone call by President Trump to a grieving military widow. Just what he said depends on whom you ask. Heres abc7 news senior White House Correspondent cecilia vega. Four bear cubs are in quarantine tonight after testing positive for a rare virus that is believed to have killed two other cubs at lake tahoe. The bears are being looked after at lake tahoe wildlife care. Its been working with state wildlife officials and uc davis since the first cub died in august. A second cub died three weeks later. Tests confirmed the bears had a rare virus sometimes found in dogs. Lets talk about the weather. We know the rain is coming. Already tonight i had a little wind chill wiper action.
