Good evening, it is now been six days since the north bay fire broke out and tonight, firefighters are hoping calm winds will help them gain the upper hand. The death toll rose to 40 and searchers fear are climbing as they are finding victims buried in the buildings. Santa rosas hospital is expected to reopen. Flames approaching the hospital forced it to evacuate early monday morning. A big concern through the Evening Centers around the nonefires that merged in to one. The fire is 15 contained. We have more on the fight tonight. Reporter yes, we are in the downtown plaza, its quiet behind me, everything is closed. The light that you are seeing is coming from our equipment this evening. Heres a look at one neighborhood near a winery. The oldest one. One of the oldest in sonoma. We found a deserted neighborhood with sprinklers going off on the top of a home. The homeowners appeared to have left, but left the sprinklers on. Their defense against the threat. Ad we found an active fire burn engi ing in a grassy field near a home that appeared to be evacuated. We noticed a large stucco home sitting on the hill and below the fire and emergency officials blocked off roads in the area. Cal fire officials are putting in extra hours to try to contain this fire. The lower half, just above sonoma, the wind was blowing and it came in to the north end of sonoma there and the guys were taking action on that. It was headed around the corner and blew out again on another spot. They are actively on it, and its still working its way down toward the city. So, they are attacking the fire from all angles. Sky 7 shows a tanker dropping fire retardant from kenwood. You can see its quiet here. A few minutes ago, i did see a couple of fire trucks leave. Not sure where they are headed and as for traffic. Most of the people around here have left to eEvacuation Centers. The that is the lawsuit estimatestimat that is the latest. Lets check in with the meteorologist who is monitoring the wind conditions in sonoma and the rest of the north bay. The winds have been 20 miles an hour but it has calmed down. We will show you where the active fires are. The winds generally light. One exception in the hills between the tubs and fire and sulfer fire. The winds are gusting to 15 mile answer hour. Last night, we showed you the perspective of a sheriffs deputy evacuating people in santa rosa as the tubs fire destroyed homes. Tonight, we get another look from a firefighter on the front lines. This is video posted by the berkley fire department. Late sunday night, they made up the hour north to help the neighbors in the north bay. After driving past a kmart. They made their way to a subdivision, where hundreds of homes had already burned to the ground. The stunning scene of destruction looked like a war zone. From a First Responders camera,s that one firefighter called it the line of sorrow and thats where they made their stand. By late morning. They had stopped the fire from spreading further down the street saving about 30 homes. Sadly, one home they could not save in the neighborhood belonged to a berkley firefighter. They were forced to leave in the middle of the night with the clothes on their backs. The funds have been approaching their goal. The struggle continues for families. We have more on the efforts. Thats why this volunteer is trying to get food boxes made for those not in shelters but that still need help. Like when they are waiting in long lines at the Assistance Center or while multiple families are displaced and living under one roof. Trying to feed everyone is really hard. What we are going to do tomorrow, we are going to open up a spot here where families can come and pick up food and produce bags and things like that to take home. And tomorrow, people can start picking up boxed meals over at francetti pizza, wood fire kitchen on dutton avenue, starting at noon. The Assistance Center opened up as a onestop shop for federal, state and local assistance to replace drivers licenses and getting housing. They help hadded 387 people today and will be open every day from 97 for the next two weeks and at one point the line stretched a block and a half and some say it was worth the wait. The people here are absolutely outstanding. They are helpful. Its amazing there and they walk you around and make sure you are set, make sure you have water and something to eat. They moved to escape new evacuation wagz notices and now she wants to hear one thing. That we are all going to get help. The nearly 200 acre burned forced mandatory eevacuations for the santa rosa area saturday morning. The winds came up and pushed the fire down the hill. Firefighters at first were scrambling to protect the homes of more than 3,000 evacuees but a heavy response is slowing the blaze and another ten minutes east, destruction from the enormous nuns fire. Firefighters believe that the nearby spot fire came from this direction. The only certainty for the First Responders the unpredictablity of the blazes. This from nasa earlier today, the satellite picture showing you the smoke from the north bay fires was getting pushed off shore thanks to gusty winds that were running 2030 mile answer ho miles an hour. Outside of the north bay today, you had some pretty blue skies out there. However, the air quality will be changing overnight tonight. Right now though, live look outside. You see good visibility but typically from the shot, we should be able to see su the. Ro tower about here blinking. We are seeing a bit of haze reenter the picture over san francisco. Right now the air quality is the poorest in the north bay where the firs are active outside of the thorth bnorth bay. The winds are turning calm and what it will do, it will prevent a lot of the smoke from moving off shore overnight tonight and much of that smoke will settle right back in to the bay area. So, tomorrow, that air quality will fluctuate to moderate and poor, in the north bay, it will be unhealthy. The trend over the coming days is for the air quality to increase to good, from inland east bay to the south bay. And moderate everywhere else and then we will track a chance on rain on thursday. Out there right now, 62 in san francisco, we are down to 48 in santa rosa, and 49 and 62 in antioch and 48 degrees. The winds are cooperating for firefighters on the front lines in the north bay. They are generally calm in the north bay right now and elsewhere, across the region, generally, about less than ten Miles Per Hour at the hour. Future tracker winds will show you the next 24 hours. Our heart goes out to the homeowners who lost their homes here. Tomorrow, a newly opened Evacuation Center in mill valley will be a full scale shelter with cots for over 400 people to sleep in. Red cross volunteers brought in tables, supplies and games for kids to make them feel more comfortable. Hot meals and medical attention are available. To good news about animals that were missing after the fire. This dog stayed behind as his fame ran to guard the goats on the property. His familys home burned to the ground but animals were safe. A selfless act on his part. I said, please take my family. I will be here, i will be all right. I was crying. My son, my mom. Everyone was crying. He tried hard to not show his fear. But the flames were close. I called my daughter, and i said, if i dont see you again, remember, i love you. That was it. Reporter his courage and selflessness did not go unnoticed. Esshe is saying, take my fam and go. Kudos to him, what a guy. I told him we were coming back and i dont think he believed us. Reporter the officer meant what he said, later that night, they found him and picked him up. I was like, nervous when he didnt come. But he came. When i saw him again, i was so happy. And saying thanks god for saving his life. I want to thank these two officers, because if it was not for them, i would not be alive right now. Reporter this family lives in a house on a ranch where he works and they lost everything. The held had kopter crew, also heroes that night. That night, they made 26 rescues in seven hours.
