New this morning we were dealing with this traffic issue, lanes are back hope on eastbound 80 in San Francisco heading to the bay bridge. This after a driver hit and killed a pedestrian unfortunately. Happened around 3 30 this morning on the freeway near Fourth Street. The pedestrian ended up on top of a gray porsche. The crash closed three lanes for about an hour. All lanes were back open, though, by 4 30 this morning. Its not clear how the pedestrian ended up on the freeway in the first place. 5 02. In today San Francisco tier are remembering one of their own. They lost a battalion chief last week after he had returned from a call. Amy hollyfield live at San Francisco fire station 4. Amy. Reporter good morning, reggie. The funeral starts at 10 00, the city has brought firefighters in from around the bay area to cover the city so local firefighters can trees and powe. No word on injuries or deaths so far. Hurricane maria is the strongest storm on record to make landfall in dominica. In anticipation of what the system could do in puerto rico its governor has already declared a state of emergency. Task force one in Southern California is now on stand by to head to that u. S. Territory. Lets go over to meteorologist mike nicco. I cant believe we are already tracking another storm of this magnitude. Yeah, its amazing, isnt it, that theres that much energy in the atmosphere to support storms. In fact, we have three of them out there right now. We will start with the northernmost and thats jose. If you are heading up to new england it will be a breezy day with dangerous rip currents all from the carolinas up to maine. Lee continues to be a nonplayer, still just a 30 mile per hour storm but look what maria did, back up to a category 5, 160 Miles Per Hour and slowly moving to the westnorthwest. The red is the fastest winds, the orange hurricane, the yellow thats going to be storm winds. Look at the red go right over the eastern third, if you will, of puerto rico. Major damage there tomorrow morning and then it does weaken and head towards the turks and caicos with at least 74 mile per hour winds. So it is going to weaken just a little bit from a category 5 to a category 4 to possibly a category 3 as it starts to kind of head to the east of the bahamas. If it keeps that trajectory the United States will be okay but we will still keep an eye on the carolinas. The city of gilroy getting involved in the fight over daca now. The city council has adopted a resolution in support of Daca Recipients and all immigrants. Katie marzullo has the story. You may say im a dreamer reporter a song and a prayer for lawmakers. The murder on valentines day 2013 gained international headlines, this new case against the blade runner will start at the beginning of next month on november 3rd. It just doesnt end. Van calls hit oaklands main library again, graffiti sprayed all over the library on saturday morning. Its not the first time the damage left behind was more severe than in most attacks. Donald smart, 49, is found lying in the street also suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Smart on his way to a job at a local diner, also dies at the scene. Also the counter commute eastbound 24 before you get into caldecott tunnel, a couple calls into chp about loose gravel on the roadway, im seeing a little yellow through that 13 interchange, maybe some folks slowing down to go over that, just use some caution in that area, too. Mike and other forecasters all across the country now say maria will likely hit puerto rico and the Virgin Islands and i want to show you this new video, i literally got it here within the last two minutes, this is video from the island of gaut lup, its from the airport there. Folks taking shelter right now, the eye of maria about 85 miles west of them. You can see how strong the winds are, how much rain is coming down. Here is another video from a little bit earlier, same island, that is just north of dominica which i mentioned earlier and dominica we are still waiting for better information from that area because the Prime Minister there said this morning that they are devastated. So we dont know as far as injuries and deaths. I will be watching for any update and i will let you know as soon as we get more details. Happening today firefighters from across the bay area will staff San Francisco fire stations and respond to emergencies while they are attending a funeral for a fallen firefighter. We now know who bart police are looking for in a bizarre robbery attempt involving a written threat. They released these photos of a woman accused of writing and pass ago note to a fellow passenger saying two guns were pointed at her. Julie dragland was riding while the required handed her in note on saturday afternoon. A woman on board the train gave her a note that read i have two guns pointed on you give me your stuff. So i started slumped over to the left and started shaking and people started to notice. The scene she caused near the civic center station scared the attempted robber. Police say she got off the street at powell street. Detectives are reviewing the stations Surveillance Video from more evidence. Im watching the roads as i do every morning and it is no surprise to anyone that congestion is a major issue in the bay area and now theres new numbers to back that up. Yeah, this probably wont come as a surprise to you but the bay area has reached another record high for congestion on the roads. In fact, its increased 80 since 2010, thats just seven years. This all comes from a new report, it comes from the ntc. The average driver spending an average of three and a half more minutes in traffic than they did last year. Metropolitan Transportation Commission revealed the top worst commutes. Number one the 280 interchange in San Francisco, number two is interstate 80 from hercules to San Francisco, thats the only one in the top ten con are jested in both the morning and afternoon commutes. Number three is where we are at on 101 from Mountain View to san jose. The good news with all this traffic you most likely have a job to go to. It is absolutely directly related to the economy and to the jobs housing imbalance that we have in the region that our two biggest job centers are San Francisco and silicon valley. The more express lanes are opening up in the bay area. Another one coming next month on 680 allowing solo drivers to pay a toll to get access to those carpool lanes. We will see if that helps in next years reporting. Reporting live in santa clara, matt keller. A lot of people reported feeling an earthquake last night in los angeles. A magnitude 3 of 6 hit just north of westward around 11 20. That earthquake became the top trend on tritt twitter in the u. S. More than 7,000 people said they felt it and when Kim Kardashian is tweeting about the earthquake, everyone is tweeting about it. Any earthquake is a good reminder to get repaired. On to developing news, Sonoma Police are searching for this bank robber, this happened around 10 00 at the here he appears to be wearing a black and gray wig. A witness says that they saw the man taking off some of his clothes while leaving the area, it is not clear how much money he got away with. A crash caused downed power lines and sparked a grass hire that sparked the chp to close highway 116. The fire started around 5 45 yesterday afternoon near petaluma. According to the press democrat a car crashed into a fence and a utility pole causing the downed power lines. The press democrat also reports the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui. Highway 116 still closed, thats because of a planned closure, it is expected to open at 6 00 this morning. No one was hurt here and that fire burned about five acres. Police arrested a suspect for running over two Police Officers with a car during an alleged shoplifting incident. He is identified as 57yearold terry gordon of oakland. Gordon was arrested for attempted murder and evading police. This happened sunday night in a safe way parking lot. An officer and his partner chased the suspect to his car, the suspect drove off with the officers hanging on. He hit that suv, so what it is is as soon as he hit that suv he backed up and thats when the officer fell behind the other officer, he must have hit him because he was complaining about his knees, he couldnt get up. That officer was treated and released. His partner remains in the hospital with broken bones. San Leandro Police say both officers expected to make a full recovery. Jackie spear is taking a bite out of the dog walking rules by hitting it in the pockets. She proposed an amendment prohibiting funding from being used to implement and enforce the rules. This has been a 14year tug of war, on one side dog enthusiasts who want less restrictions on the 80,000 acres of land. On the other side environmentalists who want to further protect wildlife. You can see maria right here, category 5, 160 mile per hour winds, see that Little Silver tail, thats where it started. It started several hundred miles south of irma and thats the path its taking right now, but look what happens over the next 24 to 48 hours, it heads right across the turks and caicos but thats where the paths start to deviate, where as irma went into the florida straits it looks like maria is going to head up more towards bermuda, possibly getting pushed into the carolinas as we head deeper into next week. And a much weaker storm hopefully by then also. Something we will keep an eye on for you absolutely. Mass transit will be dry all day and its going to be rather breezy if you are going to be on the bay, you might want to sit inside on the ferry, especially this afternoon. We wil talk about a chance of some light showers coming up in the accuweather sevenday forecast. Here is alexis. I want to take you back to some video from a really ugly crash last night on highway 17 in the los gatos area. This was on the northbound side of the freeway. One of those vehicles flipped over, you can see that red car is upside down. Two vehicles total were involved. We had a full closure of highway 17 for about an hour last night. That lasted from about 10 15 until 11 15 when they got one lane open. We had a really long ugly backup. At this point once we started the commute this morning we were fully back open so its not something you have to worry about for this mornings commute but obviously that was a major issue last night.
