Lets get more on the storms path and power from accuweathers justin povick. Whats latest . And were talking about devastation throughout the central bahamas. Northern cuban coast looking at severe impacts. Then it makes the bend off to the north. And were looking at landfall early sunday morning in the vicinity of miami. Thats the latest projected path. But were still concerned about the impacts further off to the north into northern florida and into the carolinas where were going to have gusty and in some cases damaging winds and dangerous flash flooding. Nick . Diane . And i know we were also watching the two other hurricanes forming in the atlantic, katia and jose. It sounds like jose is strengthening. Anything to worry about there so far . Yes, with jose we are concerned. Much smaller storm when you compare the two between irma and hoe say. He jose. But notice its proximity to the islands devastated not too long ago. A very, very sad situation potentially here, again, toward barbuda and anguilla. Thanks very much for that, justin. Now with concerns of the hurricane in miami, now they are worried about the winds. High rises were built according to strict codes, but the question is, can they stand up to irmas predicted winds . Abcs tom llamas went searching for answers. Reporter miamis glass towers and the cranes that build them causing concern. Hurricane irma could shatter it all. Those are big targets out there. Two days after andrew first hit florida, that was when we started seeing the extent of the devastation there. Lets take a look back at that coverage from the abc news vault. This is world news tonight with peter jennings. In florida, where the hurricane wreaked so much havoc monday morning, an Insurance Agent in miami said theres a pattern after disasters like this. First you only think of is survival, then comes the accept of loss and you later think about rebuilding. In southern florida most people are at the second stage, stunned by the loss. And there are a lot more people who lost their homes than everybody first believed. Heres abcs al dale. Reporter officials now estimate that there are at least 180,000 homeless in florida. Its important to remember and terrifying to think that andrew caused 25 billion worth of damage in florida alone and claimed 26 lives in the u. S. And additional people died as a result of the storm but sort of not directly because of it. I just want to look at the image again. We want to look at the size of irma in comparison to andrew. This means even those areas not directly in line with the eye of the storm will still experience extremely powerful winds. So for those of you thinking we can just ride this storm out, if you were in evacuation zone, please heed those orders. The way were seeing that cone, it is all of florida. All right. Were turning now to a parenting alert about a new device designed to make School Bathrooms safer for students. You cant put a camera or a guard inside a bathroom, but you can install a new device that claims to detect bullying and vaping without disrupting privacy. I checked it out. Pencils are sharp and the backpacks are packed. School is back in session. And while parents have been busy preparing, schools have been preparing as well. Were obviously looking to protect and be proactive about whats going on inside our schools. Reporter this will be the first school in the country to use a new antibullying device. We look for devices like this to put in areas where cameras are not allowed. Reporter its called fly sense, a small box. If noise levels spike in the bathroom because of a fight or the air changes because the student is vaping, the fly sense detects those changes. And it sends a text alert to school officials. In terms of technology, bathrooms are so private. What do you say to parents that might be concerned about having Something Like this in a bathroom where their child is going. In our device, theres no camera, no microphone, no phones, were not recording anything. Were looking at the environmental surroundings. So privacys kept to the utmost. Reporter nearly 30 of students in grades six through 12 have experienced bullying. And data from the cdc from 2016 show ecigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product by youth. So we put fly sense to the test. Take a look at what happens when we stage a fight in the boys bathroom. What youre seeing is sound and this is normally what you would see across, this means theres activity. Reporter the fly sense detects a change in the bathroom noise level and sends an alert to check it out. The same thing happens with the vaping demo. This is the area where were allowed. Reporter you now the second someones doing something wrong. Most definitely. Tough to get away with much in the school. They first installed them at this school, and they already are installing in another school as well. And theyre expecting to expand nationwide. As vaping laws get stricter. Demand is increasing. Any surveillance in the bathroom is odd. Well, so that was the big issue, you know, its very difficult to monitor the bathrooms, but thats also why its where a lot of mischief goes down. So in this case, theyre not recording any sound. Theres no cameras involved. Theyre just monitoring for changes in the environment. They feel like this is a good answer. Coming up, harvey and irma.
