Hurricane irma has weakened slightly with its maximum winds now at 160 Miles Per Hour. But it is still a dangerous category five storm. And right now its heading between cuba and the bahamas. Consulate general in curacao says it believes about 6,000 americans are stranded on st. Martin. They are getting more frantic as hurricane jose is threatening a second blow to tourist destinations. Morphing into a monster with a rare combination of conditions, moist air over deep, warm water with temperatures over a degree above average feed the storm. Theres also a lack of upperlevel winds that would choke the storm. It has avoided large land masses that would break apart the hurricane. It is like going over a giant all you can eat buffet for a hurricane right now. Reporter the eye 30 miles wide with it 600 miles across. With the inner core equivalent to an ef3 tornado. The recordbreaking stretch of 185 mileperhour sustained winds for over 36 hours. Hurricane irma continues to churn to the u. S. As a remarkably strong hurricane and florida is preparing for the worst. Most of the coastal communities especially here in the southern part of the state under mandatory Evacuation Orders. We expect a storm surge of 7 to 10 feet. That would certainly bring the water up and over my head. The fluctuation of track has everyone on edge and most people are prepared. Irma has the potential to catastrophically devastate the state. And five join as one to support the victims of harvey. The five living former president s are appealing to americans to support the victims of that devastating hurricane. A powerful earthquake has hit Mexicos Pacific coast as authorities evaluate a tsunami threat. The magnitude 8. 1 quake was felt 600 miles away in mexico city. Several aftershocks have also followed. Theres a massive relief effort under way in several caribbean countries, and preparations in florida right now, with Hurricane Irma showing few signs of slowing down. The storm is 500 miles from miami and moving straight toward the city. Maximum winds have diminished slightly, but irma is still a very dangerous, category five storm. Roads and highways out of florida are clogged. More than a Million People have been ordered to evacuate south florida. And those who didnt drive out are looking for flights out. Airlines are looking to fly in bigger jets to evacuate people. Seats are still very hard to find. U. S. Officials believe Many Americans are stranded on st. Martin. The state departments trying to figure out how to get them off the island as soon as possible. Irma is now making its way past the bahamas and James Longman is there. Reporter preparations for irma are well under way hire. Airports have started to cancel flights, which means people who want to get off this island, time is running out for them. Across the caribbean, at least ten people have been killed and thousands left homeless. Devastation in st. Martin, the u. S. Virgin islands and barbuda where 95 of homes have been destroyed. The storm is moving across turks and caicos and is expected in the bahamas shortly after that. Its 600 miles wide. It may cause ocean surges of 20 feet. But there are big crowds and lots of frustration at airports and time is running out for the evacuation plan. The latest is the projection still taking this into south florida like you said, a very powerful, large hurricane, much larger than what we saw with andrew. Winds still 160 Miles Per Hour. And were talking about devastation throughout the central bahamas. Northern cuban coast looking at severe impacts. Then it makes the bend off to the north. And were looking at landfall early sunday morning in the vicinity of miami. Thats the latest projected path. But were still concerned about the impacts further off to the north into northern florida and into the carolinas where were going to have gusty and in some cases damaging winds and dangerous flash flooding. Nick . Diane . And i know we were also watching the two other hurricanes forming in the atlantic, katia and jose. It sounds like jose is strengthening. Anything to worry about there so far . Yes, with jose we are concerned. Much smaller storm when you compare the two between irma and hoe say. He jose. But notice its proximity to the islands devastated not too long ago. Friday night into saturday, saturday night into sunday for that potential of Hurricane Force winds. Worstcase scenario, over 100mileperhour winds. This would cause additional devastating impacts. A very, very sad situation potentially here, again, toward barbuda and anguilla. Thanks very much for that, justin. Now with concerns of the hurricane in miami, now they are worried about the winds. High rises were built according to strict codes, but the question is, can they stand up to irmas predicted winds . Abcs tom llamas went searching for answers. Reporter miamis glass towers and the cranes that build them causing concern. Hurricane irma could shatter it all. Those are big targets out there. Again, were going to lose buildings that are going to have to be repaired, but i dont think buildings are going to completely collapse. Reporter 25 cranes are being secured. And those who live near them told to evacuate. Developers and builders abc news spoke with told us buildings in downtown miami will hold up but highrises could sway some up to 12 inches. I do expect to feel some here. We did feel it during matthew, and it was basically a Tropical Storm. Reporter being in a high rise, youre less likely to get hit by debris. But the wind up here is much more powerful. Hurricane researchers tell us that high up a category four hurricane with wind the at 140 Miles Per Hour would be 250 miles up high. This south beach resident will ride out the storm in his condo. My plan is it gets too crazy to go to the elevator shaft of the building which is like a fortress. Reporter other miami residents are like up for supplies. In some stores, even water is getting tough to find. And as people prepare for Hurricane Irma, there are reports of price gouging throughout the state of florida. And a teenager surfing off the coast of barbados was killed as Hurricane Irma tore through the caribbean. The friend of the 16yearold says the boy was a pro surfer who died in a freak accident when a certain type of wave dumped itself directly on top of him and sucked him under. This is pam and ramon, they were strangers until he gave her the generator he just bought. Brecky had spent days searching for a generator to take care of her sick father. She broke into tears when it santiago bought what turned out to be the last one in the store. He gave it to her without even knowing why she needed it. Its okay. Brecky says her father is on oxygen and she has another ill relative to care for. And the Stores Manager says he doesnt know if hell get another shipment of generators before irma arrives. Northbound highways are jammed and gas shortages are reported as far north as jacksonville and forget about amtrak. Its canceled trains. Hurricane andrew destroyed more than 25,000 homes. But we want to look at this graphic. Thats hurricane andrew in comparison to irma now. You can see andrew was only about half the size of what irma is right now. And thats especially alarming if you remember the level of devastation from hurricane andrew. Again, that picture is just incredible. Two days after andrew first hit florida, that was when we started seeing the extent of the devastation there. Lets take a look back at that coverage from the abc news vault. This is world news tonight with peter jennings. In florida, where the hurricane wreaked so much havoc monday morning, an Insurance Agent in miami said theres a pattern after disasters like this. First you only think of is survival, then comes the accept of loss and you later think about rebuilding. In southern florida most people are at the second stage, stunned by the loss. And there are a lot more people who lost their homes than everybody first believed. Heres abcs al dale. Reporter officials now estimate that there are at least 180,000 homeless in florida. Thats the size of dayton, ohio and glendale, california. I lost everything i own except a few trinkets. Fema is warning that between hurricaney harve and irma, the Emergency Response fund is almost completely depleted. Fema is burning through about 200 million a day. Thats an average of 8 million an hour. Now the house has approved nearly 8 billion toward Harvey Disaster relief, which fema says isnt nearly enough to cover those costs. They were worried the roof was going to come off the home they were in. When the storm was over, they went outside to survey the damage. They described utter destruction, but alex slipped and fell, hitting her head, she was in and out of consciousness, but they couldnt get to a hospital on the island. They were forced to call the coast guard and wait for the following morning for rescue. We lent them our phones to call family. We accompanied them to the hospital. While we were there, the backup generator actually failed. So the Power Outages, a huge problem here. Nick and diane. Linzie, thank you very much. The latest track shows it taking a direct hit on miami. Many residents are under Evacuation Orders. Many are driving, and that means traffic on highs into georgia was three teams the usual volume.
