Bryce williams on the air. He died this afternoon after shooting himself. Lets begin team coverage. Reporter it was supposed to be a light morning assignment. Alison parker in front of the camera, photo journalist adam ward behind it when a gunman opened fire. 24yearold parker and 27yearold ward were killed as colleagues and viewers watched on tv. People behind us in the news room crying. Reporter Vicki Gardner seriously injured. Police zeroed in on Vester Flanagan aka Bryce Williams. Flanagan later died at the hospital from a selfinflicted gun shot wound. Flanagan called abc news and sent a letter explaining the Charleston Church shooting was his tipping point. Our investigators have a copy of it and its use in the course of this investigation will be continuing. Reporter parkers boyfriend, a wbdj anchor tweeted we were very much in love. We just moved in together. I am numb. Today her colleagues were going to celebrate a new job before the two moved away to start a new life together. The third victim a local chamber of commerce official is expected to survive. In the manifesto flanagan expressed admiration for Virginia Tech shooter describing himself as a human powder keg. Vester flanagan was voted homecoming prince his junior year. He was such a happy, positive person. Im devastated. I mean, i grew up with him. Im a little bit older than he was but he was a kid. We would barbecue together. He was in my backyard. Flanagan went on to sf state and graduated with a Radio Television degree in 1995. While he was at state he interned at kpix and was a production assistant. Flanagan moved out of california bouncing from job to job. This is an excerpt from his resume. He moved back to the bay area and worked at pg e from 2001 to 2002 and then in communications at a small firm in sacramento. His last listed job was as a multimedia journalist at wdbj. The nasdaq jumped 191 points and the s p finished up 72 points. A woman and her two dogs are safe after being rescued from a cliff overnight. They spent more than six hours trapped there after falling. A man with them also fell but he made it to the beach below and called for help. Aggressive behavior by the two pit bulls prevented fire crews from reaching them. The woman was pulled to safety about 6 45 this morning. Animal control officers reached the dogs around the same time. One of them appeared to be injured. A Police Investigator says the bullet that killed kate steinle ricochetted after first hitting the pier walk way. Thats on the second day of preliminary hearing for her accused killer. Vic lee is live at the hall of justice with the latest on the story. Reporter there has been a lot of speculation about that, the fact that the gun Francisco Lopez sanchez is accused of firing was actually pointed not at kate steinle but at the ground. That leaves one to believe he was not aiming at the woman. Thats a point the prosecution and the defense seem to agree on is the charge is still murder but not necessarily premeditated. Today police criminalest displayed the gun that was used in the shooting, a. 40 caliber pistol similar to this one. It had been recovered by divers off the bay. Smith said one round had been fired from the seven cartridge magazine clip and that the gun was still functioning normally. Under cross examination public defender repeatedly asked smith if it was possible the gun could accidently discharge without sanchez pulling the trigger. The criminalest said no matter how the trigger was pulled that is the only way the gun could have been fired. The prosecution determined he was at pier 14 when kate steinle was shot to death. Cell phone images show a man who appeared to be sanchez sitting on the bench and then walking off after the shooting. One of the tourists identified sanchez after he was arrested that evening. An investigator also testified sanchez had confessed during his interrogation, the same thing he told abc 7 news during a jailhouse interview that weekend. A Police Inspector testified that the bullet struck the pier walk way first some 15 feet way and ricochetted striking steinle in the back. Gonzalez sir mised that the gun was pointed at the ground when it was fired. Now to sky 7 hd showing the dead whale that turned up underneath a dock this morning. As you can imagine it is leaving behind a strong smell this afternoon. The question remains how will it be removed. Abc 7 News Reporter Wayne Freedman is live in almeida. Have they figured out the answer to that yet . Reporter they dont have an answer how to get the whale out of here. They dont know what kind of whale it is. Look over here. This is the carcass way at the other end of the pier is the head of the whale. They cant tell the species until they see the head. How big is the whale . Thats the head. That is the tail. It was 6 00 a. M. When employees at Mariner Square and other companies saw the whale the first time. It has grown larger and more aromatic in the hot sun. The head is wedged in the pilings. The tail passes beneath the dock. It appears to be locked in fairly tight as we have gone from high tide to low tide. Around mid afternoon researchers came in from the Marine Mammal center and took a look and blood samples and tissue samples. The people who run the yacht business say they called the coast guard, asked about removing the carcass. Here is christina wright. Who knows how long it will be here. Our concern is that we dont want it to become a navigational hazard. That is our main concern. Reporter the Mammal Center tells us the noaa is involved and aware of this as is the coast guard. Saddler flew back from france. The Sacramento State student spoke briefly thanking everyone for their support. He says it is good to be home. This is my home. I am glad to be back here to see everybody. Kind of overwhelming. The mayor gave him a special Sacramento Kings jersey with his name on it. When the other heroes return home the city is planning a parade in their honor. Ten years ago this week new orleans was forever changed when Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 1,500 people. A decade later students are still spending time and energy rebuilding that city as part of a volunteer program. Abc 7 News Reporter Lyanne Melendez is in the news room with their story. Ten years ago after katrina thousands of volunteers poured in but only a few have continued to help rebuild that city and uc berkeley is one of the universities that has stayed. More than 600 calstudents have gone through the program. When the country saw the plea for help following Hurricane Katrina uc berkeley was one of the first universities to respond. Jeffrey mitchell spent his summer there in 2006. There were houses in the middle of the road, cars on top of houses, houses on top of cars. We were on our hands and knees. Reporter all part of the magnolia project, one of Many Public Service programs. Among the hardest areas hit by katrina was the lower ninth ward, an under served community in new orleans. Mitchell says volunteering there helped him understand the economic disparity that still exist. Such as the French Quarter which was rebuilt almost immediately and then you look at the ninth ward and it looks like katrina hit yesterday. Reporter rosa says after katrina many residents vowed to change their past. Calstudents have been there to support them. Really just empowering voices, how to support people and having their voice heard. Reporter these are all lessons not necessarily taught in the classroom. Ilana banks is now an activist in the community she lives in teaching neighbors what to do in the event of a disaster like an earthquake. Police say the shooter Vester Flanagan was a former colleague of the two victims. Flanagan had been a reporter known professionally as Bryce Williams. Officials say he shot himself. The virginia news station wdbj identified the victims as 24yearold reporter Alison Parker and 27yearold photographer adam ward. Wdbj tweeted the photo and said we love you alison and adam. An anchor was dating Alison Parker and says we were very much in love. I am numb. Flanagan, the alleged shooter, was from oakland and grew up in the bay area. Laura anthony spoke with one of flanagans High School Friends who remembers him as a quote great guy with no signs he was troubled or angry. Laura will have much more on this part of the story coming up at 5 00. A man who hired and fired Vester Flanagan admits he had issues with him but says the shooting has left him stunned. It was shock. The hair on the back of my neck went up. Issues with him and his personality that kind of spiralled down and that is why we had to get rid of had im. News director now works in san diego. 15 years ago he hired flanagan as a reporter and anchor in tallahassee, florida. He was fired after a few years because of, quote, odd behavior. In response to the shooting the white house today renewed a call for stricter gun control laws. A judge sentenced james holmes to life in prison without the possibility of parole for shooting deaths of 12 people. The judge sentenced homes to 3,200 additional years attempted murder. The sentence comes two weeks after the jury split on whether homs should have the death penalty. Super bowl 50 will be in just six months. Reporter the police chief says the predicted el nino winter and the super bowl are reasons for the homeless like this to get off the street. The mayor says the city has a plan but critics say its unrealistic. This is what San Francisco mayor ed lee doesnt want visitors to the super bowl to see, Homeless People camped out in front of the Ferry Building and anywhere near the fan village. Its expected to cover Market Street from beal opening the week before the big game. I want people not to be on the streets whether it is super bowl, whether its not super bowl time. Reporter with a Million People expected to party there will be a focused effort to get the homeless off the streets leading up to the super bowl. Making sure that the areas that we promised people that come into are safe and clean and making sure that everybody has an alternative. He also wants to place the homeless into 500 units of housing currently being renovated but there are people like this man who do not want to be subjected to the rules. Tell me how many i can have. Instead of clearing people off the streets when the super bowl comes i would like to see a commitment that folks basic needs are met that we recommit the housing and we have treatment available. Today bay area students got a special escort to school. Some were a little embarrassed by dad but School Administrators say it is good for the students. Reporter walking into middle school on the first day is already loaded with emotion. Having dear old dad walk you in can just add to an already self conscious morning. A little bit embarrassing. They said they should walk me in. Here we are. Reporter the dads were encouraged to be here today. The Hayward Unified School district invited them to take their kids to school as part of a National Program called million father march. They did research and showed if a father is more involved in a childs educational life the child does better academically. Reporter the program was just the push some dads needed. My wife came back from registration and showed me the forms and said they were kind of doing this. This is kind of new for me this year. I am kind of enjoying it. It is pretty nice cht. Reporter the program has motivated some dads to take their support beyond the first day. One of the schools they created a program called dads of great students. That Group Meets Every Month and they do things around the school. They help out. So these are the things we want to come out of the program. Reporter even though students may have said they didnt need their fathers today dads knew deep down they made a difference. It is a little embarrassing. I can get over it. A stunning crime, a man who grew up in the bay area shoots two former tv colleagues during a live broadcast and posted his own video of the killing on social media before taking his own life. Police say todays shooting is the work of a disgruntled employee. Vester flanagan went by Bryce Williams on the air. Police say he shot and killed Alison Parker a morning News Reporter and adam ward a photographer at wdbj in virginia. Flanagan ranted on twitter. This is video of him reporting early in his career. A news director who hired him years before and later fired him for performance issues has this to say. It is the only time i will tell you it was recommended i have a Police Escort outside a building. He was actually escorted by the Roanoke Police out of the building because he was not going to leave willingly or under his own free will. Flanagan was raised here in the bay area.
