Neighbors told abc 7 news they first heard a loud boom and then ran out to see this. A home at 14th and peralta completely engulfed in flames. It went boom and you saw Police Officers running from the house. Reporter the back portion erupted just as two sheriffs deputies and a locksmith were serving an eviction notice on the man who lived there. Making zee to the lock. An explosion in the home that sent both deputies to the hospital with minor injuries. Thats when i heard the second boom. Reporter janet lives in the upstairs unit. Two of her sons also live in the first part of the triplex and operate a music studio there. I headed through the living room and told my son we have to get out of here. And that was right after the second boom. Reporter once the flames died down, they found a badly burned body just inside the doorway. We believe even more so that it was a natural gas incident. The question is whether it was disconnected to commit suicide or disconnected or left on and ignited knowing the deputies were there. What is the latest situation there . Obviously this would be awful if those two fires merge. Its important to note the rocky fire is pretty much contained. 88 containment. Most of the fire activity were seeing is within that perimeter. Its not like these are going to become one giant fire. However the jerusalem fire is growing at the same rapid rate that we saw the rocky fire burn the first couple of days. This fire has become very active and continuing to burn. Daniel, exactly how far is the jerusalem fire from the rocky fire. The jerusalem fire has burned right up to the perimeter of where the rocky fire had earlier burned and earlier contained. This fire has been pushing toward the east. Instead of going to the north, weve seen a lot of the activity east of this fire as well as now were starting to see some of it into the northeast part of this fire as well. So its really burning around where the rocky fire had burned. As the southwest winds have come up and are pushing this fire toward the east, its move away from those homes being evacuated. It moves closer to just open wild land ready to burn. You talk about the conditions. Obviously we always hope overnight you can get a better handle on it. That wasnt the case. How challenging was it considering that . Even overnight wee saw fire activity throughout the latest of the evening into the early morning. We saw cooler temperatures, higher humidity. Fire activity really did lay down. Its not about extreme hot temperatures. Its not about strong gusty winds. Its about the dry conditions. There are gusty winds but its dry vegetation thats fueling this fire as it did with the rocky fire. How many homes are threatened and is this the same terrain and area as we saw with the rocky fire where its difficult to get to and makes the challenge that much greater. There are about 50 homes threatened by this fire. Its move away from those homes. However, those residents remain evacuated. This is burning in similar terrain. Its rocky, steep and very dry. Access to some of those areas can be very difficult to take hours to get equipment back into the area. Thats where the air resources have been critical to drop retardant, slowing down this fire.
