Where were seeing the ridge of the fire as it moves closer to town. What have you been seeing here . I see like an erratic wind coming over the fire and been out for like an hour, two hours and its been changing. The winds been changing. A lot of smoke. Everybody has been smoked out. Were about three miles from that ridge line where the flames are burning. You live nearby. What is the feeling . Are you scary nervous at all . Little scary. We just had a fire a couple days ago and were all just waiting to see if we get evacuated and everything. Youre on an evacuation advisory advisory. Are you pakd up . On standby. Josh ill have you hold this map for me so i can explain what were talking about here. Go ahead and hold it. This is the entire incident and these maps as they come out are even a little bit outdated. Firefighters tell me that it is spread further into this region and they did lose one more structure today. Now, to give you a little more orientation we are over here on dam road, about three miles out is where this ridge line is. The houses along this area between lower lake and clear lake those places are on advisory and sheriff officials have been walking around, making sure that people know to be ready to go in case they need to. And the reason being that this fire has moved so, so quickly. Ill show you the dry graph. So firefighters have a test where they say its an ember test and they say its 100 the embers if it falls from the fire. You can see the ash coming down and a huge haze and landing a little bit. If there was an ember within that ash, it would surely ignite the ground. I want you to point you down the road and my photographer fillphil is moving with us. That is the direction of lower lake and its absolutely smoked out. It is a choking smoke within town. People are buying masks and it is very uncomfortable and, at this point however, the fire is not moving in that direction. We have had a little bit of a wind change. But, again as josh was saying it moves back and forth. So firefighters only have 5 containment, that containment is along this ridge line where they are between homes. And at this point, also, the other concern was highway 20 to the north. They say it has a way to goes before it gets that. But steep, rocky terrain which makes it very difficult to fight this fire. Again, those masks that i was talking about, people are buying these masks to make breather easier. Well monitor this cal fire and they are out here working hard and were really at the mercy of Mother Nature here in clear lake. This sounds like an anxious situation. Do you need that mask right now . Is the smell overcoming you to the point where it is much more comfortable if you had a mask on . Absolutely. You could probably tell im trying to catch my breath a little bit. It is kind of joking and hard to talk and the longer youre out in it, the more aggravating it is to your lungs. Why dont you get inside and at least get to a place where you feelilate a little bit safer and well follow the story as the afternoon continues. You can download our free abc news app to get the latest on the fire. Just enable push alerts for instant updates. The app is free to download for smartphones, tablets and the apple watch. At least one home has burned. Well this is being called the rocky fire and its just 5 contained. For the latest on the flames lets talk to cal fire Daniel Burlant joins us on the phone. What can you tell us about the latest on this fire as we take a look from live sky 7 hd with all the smoke coming off of it. This fire very affect this afternoon. It is currently moving in a southwest direction closer towards the communities of lower lake and even the east side of clear lake. This afternoon, we did work with the Sheriff Department as well as the Clear Lake Police department and issue an evacuation advisory for additional residents in the area. How many homes can you tell are in immediate jeopardy right now . Right now we estimate that there are approximately 500 homes that are threatened by this fire. This morning we did an evacuation, mandatory evacuation for several dozen additional homes in an area known as jerusalem valley. Thats kind of in the southeastern portion of the fire. Again, this fire has grown at such a rapid rate mainly due to the fact that conditions are so dry, even with a little bit cooler temperatures today were still seeing conditions allowing these fires to burn so actively. How bad is the wind situation right now . Well, the winds have shifted and we have predicted that. That is, its somewhat working in our favor. But, really, any wind on a wildfire is always going to continue to fan the fire. Wind is not as bad as it was several days ago. But, again, its those dry conditions that really are what allows this fire to grow at such an intense rate. Daniel just one thought here about all the firefighters on the lines because theres so many of these blazes that are burning throughout the state right now and it seems like were talking to you regularly here. Almost a regular on this newscast. But for all those who are on the ground, this has to be a level of exhaustion after, you know a couple of weeks now of daily blazes that theyre having to deal with. Yeah, we have over 8,000 firefighters right now on the front lines battling these fires. Now, normally in july we would have only been going for a couple of months into fire season. But this year fire season never really ended from 2014. Weve continued to see a significant increase in our fire activity. Unfortunately, as we move further into the summer and even into the fall months conditions will only get drier. The likelihood of fires igniting still remains very high and thats why its very important. Weve been so busy that we really stress to the public help us. We need your help and the number one thing the public can do right now. Preventing a fire is the key. Yeah, certainly. All right, well, daniel with cal fire, thank you so much for joining us and giving us the latest on the rocky fire. We will let you get back to work and we have just learned from the Governors Office he sent out a tweet declaring a state of emergency. The tweet says our courageous firefighters are on the front lines and well do everything we can to help them and then theres actually a link to a state emergency proclamation that actually frees up more National Guard troops and other support to help fight these fires and its just frightening to hear him say, you know, 2014 season really didnt end. Well, and weve got another couple months here before we can even think about perhaps an el nino winter and maybe getting some relief from all of this. But if you want to keep up to date on all these fires and there are a bunch of them that were tracking every day.
