At what point does it cross the line and just becomes dirty gossip . Theres a simple litmus test. Is what youre about to say or share or listen to, is it harmful to somebody else . Is it destructive in character . Is it something you would never ever say directly to the person youre taking about . And i would even go so far as to say is it something that you would potentially deny if ever asked if you said it or participated in it . If it fits any of those thing, its probably not healthy gossip. Its not the good kind of chitter chatter at the water cooler. My mom always said, if you cant say it to their face, dont say it behind their back. A good golden rule. What do you do when someone starts gossiping to you about someone else . It can be uncomfortable. Theres a few options. The first is, call them on it. Right . So its very clearly. Really . Clearly saying, thats harmful gossip. I dont want a part of it. It takes a big level of comfort. Not everybody is comfortable policing other people. I dont know that i would be comfortable with that. There are other options if that is too harsh. Step away from the situation. Dont give an audience to somebody who is gossiping. By listening, youre an active participant. Step away from that conversation. The other is to turn a negative into a positive. And this is where you can really take control. Somebody says to you, oh, my gosh. You know, jane is such a suckup to the boss. That theyre having an affair. Youre like, yikes. Right. And so to that, you say, i actually really like jane. I respect her work. I like that. That totally takes the high road when somebodys gone low. Thats perfect. How do you handle, if the gossip you hear is about you . When you know people are talking about you behind your back. We have all been there. What do you do . First, if its untrue, petty, laughable, something you can dismiss, dont add fuel the fire. Just let it go. Let it die down. It will disappear. People will realize theyre not getting a rise out of you. Its going to go away. Thats hard to do, too. Its very hard to do. Especially when its about you and you do take it so personally. If it is true, theres a couple of different tactics. One of them is address it directly. So, you know, i know that i was caught on an informational interview with the competition. Now everybody is saying, you know what . Shes not happy here. I bet shes going to leave. I need to nip the gossip. I might say to somebody, you know what . Theres a lot of gossip about my employment. I want you to know im really committed to this position. And if and when that changes, youre going to be the first to know. And so simply by addressing it and nipping it, youre not lying. Youre nipping it. It has a chance to die down. The other option is, if its something being said about you thats true but its just too personal and difficult for you to talk about it. Maybe a situation where im going through a divorce. Someone has discovered that. Everybody is gossiping about that divorce. Maybe i enlist the help of a trusted and respected colleague to do the nipping for me, where people can say, you know what she knows everyone is talking about her. She is going through this painful divorce. Lets not make a painful process more distracting with all of this gossip. Shes our colleague. She deserves our respect of her privacy. Lets give to it her.
