The winner of the 147th Kentucky Derby is Medina Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert. It's the seventh Derby win for Baffert, a new record. It's also the fourth win for jockey John Velazquez.Medina Spirit came out of the No. 8 post with 12-1 odds, the sixth-best. Mandaloun came in second, and Hot Rod Charlie in third. The morning-line favorite, Essential Quality, came in fourth.Medina Spirit never gave ground despite competitors' attempts, including a late surge from Essential Quality entering the stretch to create a four-wide sprint.In the $3 million race, Medina Spirit paid $26.20 to win, $12 to place and $7.60 to showThe horse won or placed in four straight Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races. He's owned by Zedan Racing Stables.Baffert says the horse was bought for just $1,000. For reference, many horses of his talent are sold in the $35,000 range.
