For decades, Ouray has reveled in its self-proclaimed nickname as the “Switzerland of America.” The moniker famously etched on the oversized wooden sign at the Highway 550 lookout above town celebrates the jagged peaks encircling the Victorian-era village below. Six years ago, the city gave itself another lofty title: “The Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado.” The designation appearing on city letterhead touts Ouray as a four-season playground, where an abundance of recreational activities awaits right outside the front door.
