The free press in turkey on trial yet again. The staff of the countrys only newspaper critical to everyone critical to erdogan in court. It is good to have you with us. We begin tonight with the task of tallying the bill left by hurricane irma. The cuban government says at least 10 people were killed when the category 4 storm ripped across the coast. Many of the fatalities occurred in havana province. They blame accidents and failure to evacuate for the deaths. The storm battered the coast with waves, some 11 meters high. Irma then punched its way to the u. S. Mainland, making its way to florida not once but twice and now making its way to georgia. In florida, millions have been left without power while the storm triggered record flooding in the northeast of the state. It is not over yet. In the last few minutes, the state governor said that floods will be a threat this week. Rescuers are out looking for victims and seeing the extent of the damage. Reporter after the hurricane, the calm. Irma has obliterated parts of florida. Mobile homes, boats, and cars knocked about like toys. It was carried across highway 1. Reporter officials fear they may have a humanitarian crisis on their hands webbased one going door to door. Those who did evacuate now wait to see if they have a home to return to. We dont know what to expect. What we do, my wife and i, we get a storage unit, but our belongings in it, and secure a safe residence. Reporter irma may like work of construction cranes designed to sustained winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. Millions of homes and businesses are still without electricity. Officials say the damage will cost billions to repair. Streets in downtown miami were flooded with deep. This city is in recovery mode. The eye of the storm may have moved on from the heavily populated tampa area, but not before pulling water away from shore. Theyre worried storm surges could follow. President trump has promised to marshall the full resources of his government to help. Pres. Trump when americans are in need, americans pull together. We are one country. Reporter despite the dangerous conditions, one tv crew caught this group breaking into a store where they stole sports shoes and other merchandise. Irma is not yet done. Though only a Tropical Storm, it is expected to pound a number of neighboring states with heavy rain in the coming days. Brent im joined now by jack siler, the mayor of Fort Lauderdale in southern florida. Good evening to you. The hurricane hit Fort Lauderdale yesterday morning. I know youve had a chance to assess what happened. Talk to me about what you have found. Mayor seiler i did have the opportunity to go out probably 3, 4 times over the past 23 or so hours. I got out there this morning once the sun came up and we got a much better look at it. Most dire situations, the real emergencies. This morning, weve got a lot of trees down, power lines down, Traffic Signals and traffic signs down. A lot of sand on the worldfamous beach a lot your german listeners are probably familiar with the fact that we have one of the worlds greatest speeches, Fort Lauderdale beach, and i had tons of sand on it. The ocean pushed the sand off the beach, the wind pushed the sand off the beach. We ted cruz out there since 5 00 in the morning to try to reopen that beach. Brent what is the most acute problem for you . In miami, most of that city is still without power. Isnt that bad where you are . Mayor seiler not as bad but certainly bad. We were originally looking at about 60 , 70 of our city without power. Over the last 12 hou, we are down a little bit. Obviously, that is not acceptable to good living conditions. We are grateful that we didnt get the brunt of this storm. Our hearts go out to the communities who got hit much worse than us. The highways did a tremendous amount of damage to the trees. Some toppled into homes, some toppled into the street. Though we were fortunate in terms of structural damage from the wind, we will be cleaning up roads for the next 1224 hours just so people can get back to work, get back to normalcy. We did have a construction crane buckle in Fort Lauderdale. It was a large crane on Fort Lauderdale beach. Brent i have to admit, you caught me off guard there by saying that you are already putting sand out on the beach is to get the tourists back. If you are able to do that, to think about that this soon, it sounds like you were fairly well prepared for this storm. Is that an accurate assessment . Mayor seiler thats 100 accurate. A couple of things one, ive lived here all my life and been in Public Office 25 years, so this is not our first hurricane or our last. More importantly, city staff from top to bottom, everyone was so prepared, so ready. This storm, we had 3, 4, 5 days notice that we were going to get this big, bad storm. We were aware of its intensity. We spent a lot of time preparing for it. About 2500 employees did a remarkable job. Once we felt that we were ready for the storm, we started focusing on post storm recovery. We kicked into gear at 5 00 a. M. We had police and fire out the minute the winds got under 45 miles per hour. We felt wellprepared and we recognized that we have got to get things back to normal here. It may take some time but at the end of the day, we have such a worldclass destination for tourism, a worldclass marine industry with the Worlds Largest boat show coming up in an hour and a half. What about s of looting . We have had reports, especially in miami, how bad is that situation . Mayor seiler not as bad as the reports. But i will tell you, one of the reasons the reports are out there is that we were clear that we would not tolerate looting, that we would not tolerate people taking advantage of them. We have publicized all 19 arrests to send a message to the community. Yes, we have had some looters, we have had them in custody. Brent mayor jack seiler, mayor of Fort Lauderdale in southern florida with a relatively positive report. Now, to southeast asia. The u. N. s human rights chief has said what he called violence and injustice faced by rohingya ns in myanmar is a textbook example of ethnic cleansing. Around 300,000 have fled to bangladesh in the last month alone. Myanmars government has blamed rohingya from starting the violence. The government has refused to negotiate with those it calls terrorists. S more Rohingya Muslims crossed the border into bangladesh. They are fearing an ongoing military operation in myanmar. The foreign minister of bangladesh described it as genocide. Today, a u. N. Civil rights official also offered scathing words for the government. Because myanmar has refused access to human rights investigators, the situation cannot yet be fully assessed, but the situation remains, or seems, a textbook example of ethnic cleansing. Reporter scores of refugees have given accounts of rape and murder at the hands of the Burmese Security forces. This man says even small children were thrown into flames or slaughtered. Reporter searching for rohingya militants during an attack in august. Brent we want to bring in a Deputy Director at Human Rights Watch in new york. It is good to have you on the show. Your organization has gathered information on ethnic cleansing in myanmar. Tell us what you have found. Our researchers have been to the border at bangladesh and myanmar to hear accounts from refugees, and have been analyzing data that we can access the a satellites that are above myanmar. What we have been able to conclude is, just as that senior u. S. Official said, the situation bears all of the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing. We have seen mass displacement and, with the satellites, we have seen over 21 independent locations that have fires so big that they can be detected from space. And one of those locations, we were able to count how many buildings were burned, and it was 99 of what was there before. This is completely scorched earth and goes far behind anything the myanmar government might be doing to fight terror. Brent you have this evidence. You also offer the report that the u. N. General secretary has in patients with the Security Council. Why havent things been moving more quickly in trying t resolve what you say is ethnic cleansing . Akshaya you are right that things havent been moving fast enough. It is hard to know who is holding back the un Security Council. The one thing that seems to jump out to me is that other members are afraid of the chinese government, which sits as a permanent member and has a veto, that they dont want to put them in an uncomfortable situation. In a situation like this one, when you have a serious risk of mass atrocities that bears all of the hallmarks of a really disturbing campaign to push out one community, the Security Council cant just hold back or defer to the chinese because they dont want this discussed at the international level. Brent what about the reach of Aung San Suu Kyi invests . You have in this . You have a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in myanmar and there are critics who say she is maybe not doing enough for part of the problem. What about her role in the u. N. s lack of action . Akshaya one thing is that myanmar is on a path, a difficult path to a democratic transition. Some people held out hope for Aung San Suu Kyi to be able to bring them towards the path of a country where peoples rights are respected. Because so much hope was projected on her, it can be difficult to put everything under the microscope. The second part of the problem is that, by and large, the military there has the greatest responsibility for these crimes. They are the ones whose soldiers are, by all reports and accounts from the refugees, leading the vanguard for these attacks and atrocities. Some people say, well, it is just the military doing this and not Aung San Suu Kyi herself. My observation is that she does remain the de facto leader of the country and, to date, she has not spoken out. She has really done the opposite, helping to fan the flames with inflammatory propaganda, accusing the u. N. And human rights and aid workers of being part of the problem and perhaps even supporting the terrorists. Brent ok, Deputy Director at Human Rights Watch in new york, talking to us about the situation with the rohingya and myanmar. Thank you. We want to return to our top story. Insurers are counting the cost of Tropical Storm irma. Verma could cost irma could cost insurers 40 billion, an estimate by a german insurance company. The extreme weather could take a toll on profits and a sector struggling with thin margins and stiff competition as it is. The damage caused by irma, which has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, is not expected to be so extensive that insurance premiums surge. Googles 2 billion euro fine from the european union. They slapped google with the fine saying they were using their dominance as a search engine, giving advantage to their own search results. The u. N. The eu says they will stand by the fine. We asked our financial correspondent in frankfurt whether they you may consider a deal to avoid the affair dragging on. Reporter its just possible that there might be a deal in the end. The Eu Commissioner, who is responsible for antitrust action , said last week in an interview that google had submitted proposals to meet the eus demands. It has to be the eus demands. The Eu Commission would look at these proposals to see what they mean in effect when they are run in real life. Google is not really making it easier by filing this appeal. It serves to embitter the situation and probably will keep the eu from being very lenient in making a deal. The eu really doesnt have a reason to make a deal because, if it does, it may be seen as less stringent, less strict on those people abusing antitrust issues. It wants to serve the rights of the customers around the world, especially in the european union. It might set a that legal example. Difficult case. We will have to see how it plays out but i dont think it will be a deal in the end. Cristoph volkswagen is ramping up its emobility investment. They will spend money on electric cars in the coming years. On the eve of the International Auto show in frankfurt, the diesel cloud is looming over the industrys biggest trade fair. Some manufacturers are holding on to the technology, including volkswagen. It is the eve of the International Motor show, one of the biggest events. Vw is trying to polish its image. It is being forced to upgrade the software in over 21,000 of its cayenne suvs. Despite previous speculation, that is not stopping it from putting diesels into the new generations of the cayenne as their ceo told dw business on monday. Brent a live tv appearance by the chancellor tonight. Angela merkel faced up to voters on Live National television this evening. 150 people from all walks of society were given a chance to ask questions. Things ranged from merkels controversial refugee policy, environmental issues, economic hardship, and gay marriage. Marital is looking for a merkel is looking for a fourth term in office and she currently has a Comfortable Lead in the opinion polls. It will be interesting to compare what we saw tonight with the tb debate we saw about a week ago. Melinda, you were watching this performance and i have to say, i was watching come into i was watching too, and the chancellor seemed more at ease. Melinda the idea was to show the chancellor addressing the concerns of everyday citizens, not least because this has been one of the big issues not only here in germany but behind the trend toward populism in general, the sense that politicians arent paying attention to what people really think. She was at great pains here to really go to the people and, in fact, i think she very successfully did so in most of these cases. She was empathetic by her standards. She isnt somebody whoever shows a great deal of emotion, but we certainly saw her, for example, relating to a young woman with down syndrome glastonbury moving question about why the chancellors down syndrome who asked a very moving question about why the chancellors party was in favor of lateterm abortions. She showed that she is absolutely in command of her material. She knows the details and, when she doesnt know them, she promises the questioner that she will get back to them with full facts when she has them. Brent one of the questions was about turkey and she was asked about growing tensions with turkey and germany. Translator we have changed our stance on turkey. At october, in the european council, we will discuss suspending eu succession talks for turkey or canceling them for good. That has brought some pretty Harsh Criticism from germanys Turkish Community but it is important to take a harsh stance and show we have a different view. Brent she has been criticized. At the tv debate two weeks ago, she was criticized for being too easy, too weak, too soft on turkey. Cristoph 14 melinda what she did here on turkey is what she did again and again. You saw her there throwing a little red meat to the real conservatives in her party. At the same time, he said very clearly that there are many people in turkey who did not vote for mr. Erdogan. We cannot turn our backs on them. In other words, again and again, she strives for that balance, nuanced position. She is the opposite of a populist chancellor and i think she did a very good job here of trying to essentially negotiate between a rock and a hard place both on turkey ahead of the question of integration of immigration. She was pushed on that as well. She was pushed on questions of racism, pensions for the elderly. On all of those, she basically tried to lay out the facts, layout or position, but expressed sympathy with concerns. Brent thank you very much. The editors and the reporters at turkeys only remaining newspaper critical of president eric on our back on trial. Journalists at the newspaper being tried on terror charges. They say the charges are absurd and they accuse president erdogan as infringing on press freedom. Flex a clear demand, a clear demand, they want justice. The trial venue is next door to the maximumsecurity silivri prison where they are being held on taking part in subversive activities. The papers editors have reacted angrily. Translator it is really freedom of thought and expression that are on trial. Reporter 17 members of the staff are at stake. A government prosecutors accuse them of supporting last years failed coup and various terrorist organizations. I have pleaded not guilty. The trial has been criticized by the international community. Reporters without borders called the charges absurd. The situation is worse and worse. Erdogan succeeded to suppress the free press in this country. Only a fuel remaining free media. We have to defend them. Reporter supporters are doing what they can. Each person faces up to 43 years in prison. Brent and, ill be back at e top of e hour witmore world news.
